AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2019

WELCOME Well the sun has certainly got his hat on and has been out to play! 5 GREAT BEACHES TO VISIT THIS SUMMER WATERGATE BAY, NEWQUAY CORNWALL Two miles of golden sand backed by cliffs and caves, where the Atlantic swells produce reliable surf and peregrine falcons, gulls and fulmars wheel overhead. Spot strawberry anemones and crabs among the rock pools, walk along the clifftop, or book a surfing or traction kiting lesson with the excellent Extreme Academy on the beach.

PERRAN SANDS, PERRANPORTH CORNWALL Perranporth is one of Cornwall’s best known and most popular beaches. Boasting an enormous expanse of golden sand, great surf and all the offerings you would expect from a seaside resort - including a pub literally on the beach - the Watering Hole. The beach backs right onto the village and there is a large car park about as close to the sand as you can get. This makes it pretty convenient for just parking up the car and spilling out onto the beach which is one of many reasons for Perranporth’s popularity.

PORTHCURNO, NEAR LAND’S END CORNWALL Set beneath the clifftop Minack Theatre, this is arguably the county’s most beautiful bay: a funnel of sand caught between lichen-encrusted granite cliffs. Easily accessible, it has fine white sand and is

popular with families. It’s best at low tide when you can walk to other beaches in the bay (one of which is nudist) and sit on sandbars beneath the ancient cliff fort of Treryn Dinas, surrounded by Grecianblue water.

BLACKPOOL SANDS DEVON Three miles south-west of Dartmouth is this sheltered and peaceful crescent of fine shingle, backed by wooded hills. It’s popular with families, and a great spot for swimming as its turquoise waters are clean and usually calm. You can hire kayaks and paddle boards.

SWANAGE BEACH DORSET The clean, white sands combined with sheltered, clear waters of the bay make Swanage beach an ideal destination for a bucket and spade excursion. The bay is flanked by magnificent chalk headlands on either side, and views out over the Isle of Wight make Swanage a good place for soaking up the sun’s rays whilst admiring the views. The gently sloping beach has a clearly marked designated swimming area. Although there are no lifeguards, beach wardens patrol in summer. The calm, clear waters make the bay popular with swimmers, windsurfers and scuba divers. There are some interesting wrecks out at sea for experienced scuba divers to explore.

IN YOUR GARDEN Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day

If there is one gardening quote that sums up this wonderful time of the year it has to be this one; ‘We might think we are nurturing our garden, but of course it’s our garden that is nurturing us.’ (Jenny Uglow). All our hard work comes to fruition and we delight in the colour and spectacle it gives us. Enjoy it now! PLANTERS AND BASKETS will be in their prime

is perfect for the job and you’ll have flowers for weeks to come. Now is the perfect opportunity to autumn-sow hardy annuals such as Cornflowers, Poppies and Love-in-aMist (pictured) for a bumper display early next summer. Incorporate organic matter such as wellrotted manure or compost to break up the soil and improve drainage. Re-use the compost from your annual container displays as a soil improver, or to mulch around your perennial plants, trees and shrubs. However, do check to see that there are no vine weevil grubs, small white chubby grubs with brown heads present in the compost as you don’t want to be moving these around the rest of your garden!

The Twyford Pantry August and September normally bring us the best of Summer but take us into Autumn which always makes the real Summer feel so short! Festivals

September. We’ll be doing our bit, which is a start at least - banning the sale of bottled water (bring your own to fill up on site), rewarding reuse

come and go and we eat Al Fresco more and take food and drink out with us more increasing the need for food wrappings, take away packaging and extra food storage. We’re aware, more now than ever, about waste, pollution and the effects plastic and single use items have on our planet.

of plastic glasses from the bar to keep volumes down and The Twyford Pantry Stand will be using as little packaging as possible for its yummy food – any used will be recyclable. See more details of the event on posters and in the magazine. I have included a couple of recipes I’m thinking of serving there plus…seeing as August 2nd is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day (of all things!) a recipe to make your own easy delicious treat.

This is the best season to do something to make a difference – use a re-useable water bottle, swap plastic wrapping for reusable wraps (I, like other friends I know, are using beeswax wraps which are great) and save containers that can store food rather than recycle them. Twyford is holding its own festival again this year after a 3 year gap – Twyfest Rock @ Rec on Saturday 14th

GORGEOUS CLOTHES FOR EVERY OCCASION Here at Beautifully Different we have gorgeous clothing for every occasion and every kind of weather. We’re always looking out for the best styles for comfort and fit, with the emphasis on style. The one thing our customers told us they were always searching for are trousers that fit. How long have you spent wrestling in changing rooms, having waistbands that dig in, uncomfortable zips and ill-fitting shapes? We’ve been stocking Robell trousers for a couple of years now and the feedback from our customers is amazing! They make Europe’s best-selling trousers for women, with several different fits and lengths, not to mention over 40 colourways, so you are bound to find the perfect pair.

They have just the right amount of stretch to be super comfy and the fabric is colourfast at 30 degrees. Machine washable and light, they are perfect for travelling and their crease resistant fabric means you arrive looking as fabulous as you did when you set off! The very flattering 7/8 length is the most popular, it’s ankle grazing hemline working beautifully with flats and so elegant with heels. This length will work throughout the spring/summer season and even take you through to autumn with boots. Each season sees a new release of limited edition styles and colours, so there’s always something new to try. Our team are always on hand to offer advice and help you find the style to suit you and we will happily order a particular size or style for you if we can.

THE PORPOISE

BY MARK HADDON

Format: Hardback Edition ISBN: 9781784742829 Price: £18.99 Hand Signed by Mark Haddon to the Title Page Available from Cole’s Books - www.coles-books.co.uk

A newborn baby is the sole survivor of a terrifying plane crash. She is raised in wealthy isolation by an overprotective father. She knows nothing of the rumours about a beautiful young woman, hidden from the world. When a suitor visits, he understands far more than he should. Forced to run for his life, he escapes aboard The Porpoise, an assassin on his tail… So begins a wild adventure of a novel, damp with salt spray, blood and tears. A novel that leaps from the modern era to ancient times; a novel that soars, and sails, and burns long and bright; a novel that almost drowns in grief yet swims ashore. Pirates rampage, a princess wins a wrestler’s hand, and ghost women with lampreys’ teeth drag a man to hell – and in which the members of a shattered family, adrift in a violent world, journey towards a place called home.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mark Haddon is a writer and artist. His bestselling novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime, was published simultaneously by Jonathan Cape and David Fickling in 2003. It won seventeen literary prizes, including the Whitbread Award. In 2012, a stage adaptation by Simon Stephens was produced by the National Theatre and went on to win 7 Olivier Awards in 2013 and the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play. In 2005 his poetry collection, The Talking Horse and the Sad Girl and the Village Under the Sea, was published by Picador, and his play, Polar Bears, was produced by the Donmar Warehouse in 2010. His most recent novel, The Red House, was published by Jonathan Cape in 2012. The Pier Falls, a collection of short stories, was also published by Cape in 2016. To commemorate the centenary of the Hogarth Press he wrote and illustrated a short story that appeared alongside Virginia Woolf’s first story for the press in Two Stories (Hogarth, 2017).

IDENTIFYING AND PREVENTING HEATSTROKE IN DOGS Dogs can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes. Unlike humans, dogs can’t sweat through their

HOW TO KEEP A DOG COOL AND PREVENT HEATSTROKE

skin and so they rely on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose to regulate their body temperature and keep cool. Imagine wearing a thick winter coat on a hot summer’s day and you’ll understand why dogs succumb to heatstroke so easily.

• Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times, ideally a large bowl filled to the brim. Carry water and a bowl with you on walks. • On hot days, walk your dog during the cooler parts of the day, in the early morning and late evening • Watch your pet for signs of over-heating, including heavy panting and loss of energy. If you recognise these signs when on a walk, stop, find a shady spot and give your dog water. • Never leave your dog (or any pet) alone in a car, even with the windows open • Make cooling tasty treats by making ice cubes with your dog’s favourite food inside or stuff a Kong and pop it in the freezer • Be particularly careful with short nosed dogs such as bull breeds, boxers, pugs, older dogs, and those that are overweight. These dogs can get heatstroke simply by running around.

SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE IN DOGS INCLUDE COLLAPSE, EXCESSIVE PANTING, AND DRIBBLING. If you suspect your pet is suffering from the condition, move them to a cool place, preferably with a draught, wet their coat with cool - not freezing - water, and contact your vet immediately. Once a dog shows signs of heatstroke the damage is often already done, which is why it’s so important to prevent it.
