DECEMBER - JANUARY 2018
148TH WINSLOW CHRISTMAS PRIMESTOCK SHOW The invited Auctioneers for the day come down all the way from Newark to officiate proceedings and they have been good supporters of the show since returning to Winslow three years ago.
For the fourth year running the Winslow Christmas Primestock Show is returning to The Market Square Winslow and this will all take place on Monday, 4th December 2017. There is only one other show of this kind which is held in the centre of town and that is Uppingham, in Leicestershire and it was this show that gave the organisers of the Winslow Show the incentive and hope that arrangements could be made to make it happen in Winslow!. When Winslow Cattle Market closed, the Annual Christmas Prime Stock show was held in the nearby Foscote and run by Thame Farmers Market. But when Foscote ceased trading regularly the Winslow Show organisers felt strongly that it should remain in Bucks and if at all possible in Winslow and it was then that permission was sought and licenses obtained to bring the cattle and sheep to The Market Square in Winslow. Local farmers bring their prime stock of cattle and sheep for firstly competing in various classes to see what animals are the best in show and then selling them, by auction, for hopefully a good price. The Market Square closes at 2 pm on Sunday 3rd December to allow organisers time to set up the show site and animals start to arrive from 7am on Monday 4th December. Judging of the animals starts at 10.30 a.m. with the auction at 12 midday.
Winslow shop keepers and traders all welcome the extra visitors to Winslow on show day and although busy and lots going on, disruption to traffic is kept to a minimum with parking for livestock vehicles being arranged outside town. On the evening of show, the Winslow Christmas Primestock show dinner is held at The Bell in Winslow, where all prize winners are awarded with their trophies and a charity raffle and auction is arranged. To allow a successful show to be organised local sponsors are sought to support the show to fund prize money and costs of putting on the show but as well as being an annual event where farmers show and sell their prime stock, the organisers are keen to support worthwhile charities and over recent years, through raffles and auctions held, have supported The Thames Valley Air Ambulance, Medical Detection Dogs, Motor Neurone Society , Cancer Care & Haematology Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, R.A.B.I. and Farming Community Network (FCN) The chosen charities for this years show are The Thames Valley Air Ambulance and R.A.B.I. Also during the morning of the show R.A.B.I. (Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution) will be selling Christmas Cards to raise funds for their cause and donated mulled wine and mince pies will be distributed around the Market Square and all donations from this will go to Winslow & Villages First Responders. Why not put this date in your diary and come along to Winslow Market Square. If you would like more information then please contact Show Secretary: Pauline Claridge - 01296 730235 or 07948 155065

4 Steps to Fitness Results In my last column I spoke about how important it is to get started towards your goals as soon as possible, rather than continuously put it off for a better day.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
With Christmas just around the corner and a New Year beckoning, there’s still plenty to be getting on with both outdoors in the borders and in the vegetable plot as well in the warmth of the indoors. TIDY ROUTINE Pruning and renovation of many deciduous trees, shrubs and hedges can be carried out from now throughout the dormant season. The great advantage of doing it at this time of the year is it’s easier to see what you are doing when the branches have no leaves. Good suitable examples are: Fagus (Beech), Corylus (Hazel) and Roses (pictured). Exceptions are evergreens and tender plants (always best left until the spring), and Prunus species (including ornamental and fruiting cherries, plums, gages and almonds) as these are vulnerable to silver leaf disease when pruned in autumn or winter. CHRISTMAS WOULDN’T BE CHRISTMAS WITHOUT A RED POINSETTIA It is essential you position the plant in good light away from direct sunlight and draughts. Avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C). Overwatering too, quickly damages the plant. When the surface of the compost begins to dry out, water thoroughly. Place the pot on a tray containing pebbles, as a humid atmosphere will prolong the bract life. The process to encourage new bracts can be complicated so ask in the Plant Info Office if you need the details. However, successfully rebracting a plant is something you should have a go at and if you do succeed you can say you’ve cracked it!
A BEAUTIFUL RED POINSETTIA AVAILABLE FROM BUCKINGHAM GARDEN CENTRE
INDOOR ACTIVITIES Indoor bulbs which have been forced for Christmas can be left outside in a sheltered spot in the garden to finish dying down once they have finished flowering. Support bulb flower spikes with short split canes if necessary. Pot up Hippeastrum (amaryllis) bulbs, and bring them into active growth with regular watering and feeding. They should give you beautiful flowers for the late winter/early spring. Place hyacinths in a cool, bright place in the home. If it’s too warm, the leaves will elongate and the flowers will fade quickly. Cyclamen persicum appreciates a cool room with good light. If leaves on cyclamen start to turn yellow, this may be a sign of overwatering. Always water from below (into the saucer), and allow the plant to drink for up to half an hour before pouring away the excess water left in the saucer - wetting the leaves can easily result in fungal infections and rotting off.

DECEMBER - JANUARY 2018 OUTDOOR PLANTS Taller growing bush roses can be pruned down by about half which will prevent the wind from causing them to become loose through swaying and in turn damaging the roots. The branches of standard roses should also be shortened. Our new range of root-wrapped rose bushes can be planted from this month onwards as well as bare-rooted hedging roses such as Rosa rugosa, Rosa ‘Roseraie de L’Hay’ (pictured) and ‘Hansa’. There are plenty of interesting seasonal plants around including berried beauties such as Hollies (Ilex) and Pyracantha. Good evergreens, for example Camellias, Hellebores (including the Christmas Rose) and versatile Hedera (Ivy), are perfect to make useful displays as well as lovely gift ideas too! THINGS TO PLAN FOR Clean pots and greenhouses ready for spring. Use a product such as Agralan Citrox, to reduce bacterial and fungal spores without causing toxicity to plants. Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already. Disperse worm casts in lawns by swishing with a long cane over the turf. Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out. Discard any showing signs of deterioration. Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season – make a note of the crops you want to grow for the kitchen and consider the positioning of the crops you intend to plant through crop rotation. Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds. Make a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect against peach leaf curl. GRAFT AND GROW DAY - SATURDAY 24th FEBRUARY 2018 Our apple scion wood exchange, grafting demonstrations and vegetable growing day will feature members of The Mid Shire Orchard Group offering an opportunity to swap scion (apple varieties) from wide and far and get them grafted (for a small charge), plus expert vegetable growing advice from members of the local National Vegetable Society. The Twyford Pantry Its finally here… the season to be jolly, where our houses are full of things ready for Christmas, secret hiding places and we start (if you haven’t already!) stocking up on lovely yummy things for the Christmas period. It’s also as I’m sure some of you are aware by now, the season for me to become Mrs Leo Hodges!! Yes, on 15th December our day will finally have arrived and we can’t wait.
blind tasting (Neil & Laura included) and out of 5 – Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Aldi – the winner by far was Aldi Gluhwein so the choice was made! For your recipes this issue, I have sourced them from my favourite pre-festive treat – The Christmas Good Food Magazine – nice and easy and adaptable for any time, not just Christmas.
Have a fantastic holiday season One of our important preparations, aside everyone, indulge, enjoy your kitchens from the usual, was to decide on which and see you in the New Year! mulled wine to serve to keep our guests warm! We had a few friends round for a Love Tina x

DECEMBER - JANUARY 2018 32 rashers smoked streaky bacon least 15 mins before carving into thick slices. Any 1.6kg boneless, skinless turkey breasts (1 large or leftovers are delicious cold. Save the juices from 2 small) the tin to make gravy. 1 tbsp sunflower oil 6 pieces cooking chorizo Double Chocolate and Orange 1 tbsp maple syrup Biscotti (makes 8-10) Method... Squeeze the sausages/sausagemeat into a bowl, add the garlic, parsley and egg, and mix thoroughly, best with your hands. Lay a large sheet of baking parchment on your work surface. Use the bacon to make a large rectangular lattice, weaving the rashers in and out of each other. Place a piece of baking parchment on top, then use a rolling pin to roll over the bacon and seal the rashers together. Cup open the turkey breasts like a book, cover with cling film and use a meat mallet or rolling pin to gently bash it out into a rectangle that fits inside the bacon, with a 2.5cm border of bacon on each side. To build the bombe, peel the top layer of parchment off the bacon, leaving it lying on the bottom sheet. Arrange the turkey, skinned-side down, on the bacon, pat the sausage mixture on top. Trim the rounded ends off the chorizo and line them, ends touching, along the middle of the sausage meat mixture. Use the edge of the baking parchment to lift and roll the bacon and turkey into a tight log. Tie the bombe at intervals with string to keep it together, then wrap well in cling film and put in the fridge. Can be prepared, up to this point, and chilled two days ahead. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Remove cling film, brush the bombe with a little oil, put it seamside down on a baking sheet, and roast for 30 mins until the bacon has crisped up, reduce oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 6. Brush with the maple syrup and roast for another 45 mins. Leave to rest for at

FOOLS AND MORTALS BY BERNARD CORNWELL Format: Hardback 1st Edition ISBN: 9780007504114 Price: £20.00 Hand Signed by Bernard Cornwell to the Title Page Available from Cole’s Books, Bicester A dramatic new departure for international bestselling author Bernard Cornwell, FOOLS AND MORTALS takes us into the heart of the Elizabethan era, long one of his favourite periods of British history. Fools and Mortals follows the young Richard Shakespeare, an actor struggling to make his way in a company dominated by his estranged older brother, William. As the growth of theatre blooms, their rivalry and that of the playhouses, playwrights and actors vying for acclaim and glory propels a high-stakes story of conflict and betrayal. Showcasing his renowned storyteller’s skill, Bernard Cornwell has created an Elizabethan world incredibly rich in its portrayal: you walk the London streets, stand in the palaces and are on stage in the playhouses, as he weaves a remarkable story in which performances, rivalries and ambition combine to form a tangled web of intrigue. About the Author: Born in Essex in 1944 Bernard Cornwell was adopted at the age of six weeks by two members of a strict fundamentalist sect called the Peculiar People. He grew up in a household that forbade alcohol, cigarettes, dances, television, conventional medicine and toy guns. Not surprisingly, he developed a fascination for military adventure. As a teenager he devoured CS Forester’s Hornblower novels and tried to enlist three times. Poor eyesight put paid to his dream, instead he went to university to read theology. On graduating, he became a teacher, then joined BBC’s Nationwide, working his way up the ladder to become head of current affairs at BBC Northern Ireland, then editor of Thames News. In 1979, his life changed when he fell in love with an American. Judy couldn’t live here, so I gave up my job and moved to the US. I couldn’t get a green card, and for 18 months the only thing I could do was write novels. The result was his first book about 19th century hero, Richard Sharpe, Sharpe’s Eagle. Today he has 20 Sharpe adventures behind him, plus a series about the American Civil War, the Starbuck novels; an enormously successful trilogy about King Arthur, The Warlord Chronicles; the Hundred Years War set Grail Quest series; and his current series about King Alfred.
