Our Wedding Diary So here I am, now Mrs Laura Massey! I can’t believe this is the last wedding blog! So our beautiful wedding was everything we dreamed of… and more! It was simply stunning and we enjoyed every second!
the aisle, but as soon as I saw Mr Massey I suddenly realised there was no need to be nervous any more. The service was beautiful and was taken by Rev David Hiscox who always makes us feel at ease.
In the morning Neil surprised me by giving one of my bridesmaids his laptop – on it there was a beautiful pre-wedding video! It was a made up of 17 minutes of different clips from all of my fabulous friends far and wide, including Kyle in Mexico! Yes – I cried!
After the service, our guests headed over to the marquee whilst Neil and I went off for our photos. If you know of any one getting married in the not to distant future, I can’t recommend our photographer and friend, Gemma Lovett-Hume enough. Not only does she take the most exquisite photographs, but along with her talented husband David, they make you feel totally relaxed and most of the time you didn’t even notice they were there at all!
A lovely gentleman, Alan Shaw from Twyford, kindly drove Mum and I to the church in a beautiful vintage car, whilst the bridesmaids followed in our cute vintage camper van (called Flossy). I was SO nervous before we walked down
14
After our photos we headed to our beautiful marquee on the cricket ground where all of our beloved friends and family were waiting for us! We were greeted with Champagne and before we knew it we were going in to be seated for our wedding breakfast! The marquee was decorated just how we had envisioned it! It was just perfect! Everything from the flowers (thank you Jessica Rose! What an absolutely stunning job you

did), the pudding table, the cake (thank you Sue), the table plan, the sloe gin (thank you Foxdenton!) was just right! Although we couldn’t have done it without a selection of close friends who really helped make our day as perfect as it was… Especially; Duncan Massey, Kenny Massey, Tina Shortland, Lee Hodges, Dawn Massey, Tom Cook, Jane Melville, Alice Hunter, Sarah Kay, Stephanie Partridge, Lewis Partridge, Paul Butterwith, Kevin Wall, Sarah Wall, Matt Butler, Owain Walters and anyone else I am afraid I may have missed of this list!
groom and best man speeches and in particular well done to my Mum who gave a speech that I was truly proud of.
Thank you so much for your help the day before, on the day and the day after!
We were then whisked off to cut the cake and then onto the dance floor for our first dance to ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran. The evening reception was such great fun, being joined by more of our friends and dancing the night away to the superb live band, The HighWires and our friend Kev Wall on the decks. It truly was the best day of our lives and one we certainly will never forget. Ever!
Now for the food! The food was absolutely stunning, and can you believe that these two ladies do not do this professionally!? Thank you Loo Blackburn and Sharon for your help. You gave us the best food and it was exactly what we loved! You were superstars throughout the wedding planning and on the day and I hope I can return the favour sometime! After the food we had the speeches, which were all very entertaining and emotional. Well done to Neil and Leo who gave amazing

Ingredients 75 grams best-quality unsalted butter 50 grams soft light brown sugar 50 grams caster sugar 50 grams golden syrup 125 ml double cream 1 teaspoon fleur de sel salt
Salted caramel sauce can be rustled up in a matter of moments but making caramel requires patience, dexterity and a sugar-thermometer.
Mary Berry’s Christmas Chutney
Method Melt butter, sugars and syrup and butter in a small heavy based pan and let simmer for 3 minutes, swirling every now and again. Add cream and half a teaspoon of fleur de sel salt (not table salt!) and swirl again, give a stir with a wooden spoon and taste – go cautiously so that you don’t burn your tongue – to see if you want more salt before letting it cook for another minute on the stove, then pour into your jars.

The Twyford Pantry It’s coming up to that special time of year and WOW hasn’t it come round fast!! I’m sure some of you are well under way with your Christmas preparations and some are beginning to stress about the whole thing!
I’ve focussed on the food itself this time so the usual Culinary Capers and Tips from the Jar will be back next time.
Let’s relax and remember, for those of us that celebrate it, as long as you have some food on the table and the people around you, that you want to be with you should have everything you need. Do what you can, with the time and money you’ve got, and take the pressure off yourself – have one target – make Christmas stress free…
There is only one tip at this time of year – Prepare Ahead!!!
Roast Fillet of pork with Cranberry and Madeira Gravy
Ingredients 2 pork fillets of equal length, each about 450g (1 lb) in weight, trimmed of all fat 10–12 long streaky bacon rashers salt and freshly ground black pepper For the Stuffing 1 tablespoon sunflower oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 225g (8 oz) chestnut mushrooms, chopped 40g (11⁄2 oz) Parmesan, freshly grated 25g (1 oz) fresh white breadcrumbs 3-4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves 1 egg yolk For the Cranberry and Madeira Gravy 25g butter 100g chestnut mushrooms, sliced 300ml cranberry juice 75ml Madeira 1 rounded tablespoon plain flour 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar Method First make the stuffing. Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the onion and fry for a few minutes over a low heat until tender. Add

the chopped mushrooms to the onion, and cook over a high heat to remove any liquid from the mushrooms. When the pan is completely dry, take off the heat and add all the remaining stuffing ingredients, seasoning with salt and pepper. Set aside to cool. Split the pork fillets lengthways halfway through (but not entirely in half), open out and cover with cling film. Using a rolling pin, beat out to flat (great de-stresser!). Stretch the bacon rashers with the back of a knife, and arrange overlapping on a chopping board. Put one of the fillets on to the bacon, season with black pepper and spread with the stuffing. Cover with the other fillet, beaten side facing down. Roll up tightly, folding each piece of bacon over the roll. To make the gravy, melt the butter in a saucepan, add the sliced mushrooms, and cook for a few minutes. Gradually pour in the cranberry juice. In a small bowl blend the Madeira with the flour until smooth, then add to the sauce. Bring to the boil, stirring continuously then add the balsamic vinegar. Season with salt and pepper. Cool completely (if making ahead) or roast and serve as below. To cook and serve: Preheat the oven to 220oC/Fan 200oC/Gas 7 and put pork into a roasting tin with the bacon join underneath. Bake in the preheated oven for about an hour until the bacon is crisp and the pork is cooked. Allow the pork to rest for a minimum of 10 minutes. Add the

to cool slightly, then transfer it to a blender and purée until smooth. Cool completely (if making ahead). To prepare and serve: Reheat soup, pour into bowls and top with the crispy croutons. You can add couple of crispy fried sage leaves as well but this is optional. Source: From Delia’s ‘Happy Christmas’
Easy-Peasy Mince Pie Ice-Cream Ingredients 400g vac-packed cooked and peeled whole chestnuts 1 ½ stick of celery, trimmed and chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1 medium carrot, peeled and chopped 1 litre vegetable stock salt and freshly milled black pepper For the croutons: 2 rashers bacon, very finely chopped 1 tbs chopped sage leaves 110g stale white bread, cut into small cubes 2 tbs olive oil
Ingredients Tub of good quality vanilla or Cornish Icecream Box of ready-made shortcrust mince pies (cheaper the better!) – you can use your own if you want to.
Method To make the soup, you simply place all the soup ingredients in a large saucepan, season lightly with salt and pepper, bring up to simmering point, then put a lid on and simmer very gently for 25 minutes. While that’s happening, you can prepare the croutons. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and cook the bacon gently for 5 minutes, then turn the heat up to its highest setting, add the cubes of bread, together with the sage, and toss them around (keeping them constantly on the move) until they, and the
Method Allow ice-cream to soften if it is very hard. Smash up the mince pies (whilst eating one yourself with a sherry of course!). Allow one mince pie per ladle size scoop of icecream. Tip ice-cream into large bowl and mix in the mince pies until evenly spread – do this quickly so ice-cream doesn’t melt too much. Put ice-cream back into the tub (you may have more now so either eat it or put into another container). Seal and put back into the freezer until ready to serve – easy!

IN YOUR GARDEN
Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
As autumn slips into a potentially winter wonderland, there are plenty of tasks to be done to get the best from your garden – whatever its size! Check that light levels are sufficient for houseplants. They will need light to thrive during the winter, and can easily be forgotten in a back or spare room that receives little natural light, or with the curtains left drawn. They are best moved to a sunny windowsill until March next year. If your Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) failed to set flower buds, it may be that the temperature is too high (above 18°C/65°F), or that the plant is receiving light from an artificial light source after dark. Try moving the cactus into cooler conditions or away from night lighting.
Shrubs normally pruned hard in the spring - such as Buddleja davidii (pictured), Cornus alba and Lavatera - can be cut back by half now, to prevent wind rock and neaten their appearance. Protect newly planted trees, hedges and shrubs from wind and cold. A temporary netting windbreak is helpful where there is no natural shelter. Straw, bracken, or something similar can be used to pack around deciduous plants and protect them from frost.
Plant Tulip bulbs by the end of November. Some Tulips persist year to year whereas some perform less well and are treated as bedding, and are replaced every year. Following on from planting your Tulips, other winter bedding plants such as Wallflowers, Forget-MeNots, Bellis, Primula, Viola and Winter Pansies can be planted to provide maxim colour next spring. When doing this plant them into well-prepared ground, or pots containing a suitable multi-purpose compost. Clean and sharpen secateurs ready for pruning deciduous trees and shrubs over the winter. Special ceramic tools are available to allow awkwardly shaped and angled blades to be sharpened with ease. Spare springs and replacement blades can also be purchased for more expensive models such as Felco. Be aware that decking and stone slabs can become slippery in wet weather, with slimy algal growth exacerbating the situation. Chicken wire stapled onto the decking, temporary mats, and regular cleaning with Patio Magic, available in the Shop, can all help to reduce the risk of slippage.
34

Start feeding your fish with Nishikoi Wheatgerm (350g, £8.99) once the cold weather arrives. You can still divide hardy waterlilies and pond plants and cut back overgrown marginal plants, if required. Rake out fallen leaves or shake off those that have gathered on protective netting. Give winter protection to waterside favourite Gunnera by cutting off old leaves and placing them over the crown of the plants. Place Christmas trees away from fireplaces, radiators, heat vents and anything else that could dry the needles. Keep your Christmas tree well watered from the time it is brought home until it is discarded. Always opt for a Christmas tree stand (pictured) which has a good capacity water reservoir built into its design - it will save you time topping it up throughout the festive season. Quick fixes Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed - to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting, before you do make sure there is no hedgehogs hidden away. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees by using grease bands around the trunks. Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging. Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubble wrap works well. Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem. Seasonal colour Helleborus niger (Christmas rose) blooms can look unsightly when splashed with muddy raindrops. Putting a bark chip mulch around them will reduce this splashing effect, and cloches can always be used where practical. Pot up Hippeastrum (Amaryllis) in early November, and bring them back into active growth with regular watering. They should give you beautiful flowers for the New Year. Feed the birds To create a bird heaven, provide as many different sorts of plants and cover as you can, such as densely covered flower beds, a compost heap, lawn, hedge, pond or thick shrubs. Each bird species has different needs, so to attract the widest range it is necessary to put out different foods, for example assorted seeds, fat balls, mealworms, nuts etc.

Eat Smart This Christmas
Christmas can be a wonderful time of year. It captures the imaginations of children & families. There are family celebrations, parties, fun & festive music to think about. However, it can also be extremely stressful for us. The shops are packed with shoppers, finances can be strained and we also put immense pressure on ourselves to host the ‘perfect’ Christmas. Lets be honest, thinking about our weight can be challenging at this time of year. I’m sure you have your Christmas parties you are already thinking about and lets not even talk about those food adverts (you know the ones I mean).
out for you. Do something that you want to do instead of thinking about others all the time. 5) Think about those calories. Christmas doesn’t seem to be about Christmas day anymore, we seem to spread it out over a longer period of time. I was chatting to a friend who said Christmas starts in her family the day the children break up from school until the day they go back. That can be nearly 2 weeks of overeating. So lets do the maths.
I also notice that the cold weather plays such a huge part in our motivation. It’s not uncommon for us to want something ‘hearty’ when it’s cold and wet outside. Did you know that the average person consumes 3500 calories on Christmas day alone?! Scary thought. That’s the equivalent of 1lb in weight. Far above the recommended 2,000 for women and 3,000 for men. So I have created my own Christmas Guide SOS (Stop overeating seasonally). 1) Don’t do the Christmas food shop when you are feeling hungry. You are more likely to impulse buy. 2) Don’t start your Christmas food shopping too early either. It’s easy just to reach for that Christmas cupboard and start snacking. 3) It’s not too late to make changes ready for the new year. A lot of us think ‘well it’s XX days until Christmas. Diet starts in January’ – This is irrational thinking and come January, you’ll find that you will have more weight to lose & you’ll be under more pressure to lose that weight. 4)Look after yourself. As I said earlier, Christmas can be very stressful. Remember to take time
Tins of chocolates look delicious but each chocolate contains about 45 calories & 2.2g of fat. So if you have 10 of them a day for 2 weeks that’s 6,300 calories (just under 2lbs of weight gain in just the miniature chocolates alone). Our Christmas dinner can contain over 1000 calories (and that’s with us being conservative with our portion sizes and not including the desserts, alcohol, snacks and mince pies). Now I don’t want to be the Scrooge of the weight loss world (especially as I am having family over to celebrate on Christmas day) so I hope you have a fantastic December, stay happy & healthy. However, if come January, you would like to lose weight & follow a meal replacement plan to help you. Then come and join us at the SML Diet. We will have a fantastic weight loss challenge starting with amazing prizes. We offer free weigh-ins for our slimmers so you can pop into our offices for a chat, cuppa tea and get weighed by one of our team members.

Be Prepared This Winter Take a look at our easy steps to ensure both you and your car are prepared for the winter conditions: • • • • • • • •
Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection. Battery – the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure. Fuel – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay. Lights – check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs. Tyres – should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight. Windscreen – reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades. Screen wash – use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (WD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As well as the things you should be carrying on every journey regardless of the weather, you should make up a winter emergency kit to keep in the boot – hopefully you won’t need it but you will be very glad it’s there if you do.
Winter Emergency Kit Blanket, rug or sleeping bag Shovel Bits of carpet or thick cardboard to place under driven wheels to help regain traction on ice or snow Salt, sand or cat litter – to help clear snow and ice Reflective jacket(s) Ice scraper and de-icer
58
Torch and batteries Tow rope Snow chains (if you live in a remote or rural area) Battery jump leads Bottled water Snacks – chocolate or cereal bars Extra screen wash

How to make a Christmas door swag by Jessica Rose Decorating our front doors is a great way to welcome guests at Christmas time. I love welcoming my friends and family with something I have created myself. Whether you prefer a wreath or swag or something sparkly, why not try to create something yourself this year. Make it reflect your style, neat and natural or wild and colourful. I’ll leave that bit up to you. Here is my little guide:
What you will need to make your Christmas door swag Secateurs Wire cutters/old scissors Thick stub wires (available from your local florist) Ball of string Big bunch of foliage. Blue spruce, holly and ivy are traditional but why not try to raid the hedgerows for any evergreen you can find. Laurel, eucalyptus, dried sedum and hydrangea, rosehips. Anything wild and wonderful. Decorations of your choice. Dried fruits, pinecones, baubles, sparky twigs or even fresh roses. Long piece of thick ribbon
Foliage
Start with a big piece of foliage in the centre. Lay your next stem to the left hand side with the stem over and the third piece on the right with the stem under. Repeat this with all of your foliage. One stem under and the next over with your foliage pieces getting smaller each time. It won’t be neat, as you add foliage you can place them where they need to go for your design.
1
Hold foliage in place Once you have used your foliage and created the shape and size you require, tie your bunch securely with string. Bind it tightly to avoid pieces falling out when hung up.
2
Decoration
3
60
Take the pieces of stub wire and wire up your decorations. Wrap it around cones or through pieces of dried fruits or through baubles loops. There is no right or wrong way to do this. As long as you leave one long end and the other end is securely attached to the decoration.
Please mention Community Contact when responding to adverts
DECEMBER 2015 - JANUARY 2016 With your swag in front of you, feed the long wire up through your tie point. Place as many decorations as you like and as they are on wire you can fiddle with them to get correct positioning. Tie once more with wire or string to make sure all wires are secure.
Ribbon
4
Cut all long stems and wire to create a neat end. Tie your ribbon into a long loop and then wrap the ends around the stems and tie a lovely big bow.
Hang
Hang you door swag on your front door for all to see and enjoy.
5
If you are feeling more adventurous and fancy making a door wreath please contact me. I sell a kit with everything you need and instructions too. Alternatively I can make you one! Good luck and have fun. Happy Christmas! Love, Jessica Rose

“Buckingham Ford have a reputation for being the best in the area, with good cause. Servicing is always simple to arrange and the vehicle is collected from your home and delivered as soon as ready fully valeted with all documentation to hand and completed. A great garage to deal with and a good advertisement for Ford UK. I would not deal with anyone else.”
