Pesky Parasite Advice from Windmill Vets
Summer is here! Crack open those BBQs and get the summer tunes playing, as we enjoy more time outside and in our gardens. There is so much to see and do outside in our local area, with beautiful places like Evenley Wood Gardens, Stowe and Waddesdon Manor all on our doorsteps. In this issue we have some great editorial articles with advice on ecofriendly living, fun fitness events in June and July, pesky parasite advice from Windmill vets and a really important article, Lucys Mission to Michigan. This is about a beautiful little girl Lucy Wright, who is fighting to beat high risk Neuroblastoma – an aggressive childhood cancer. Lucy has been accepted for treatment in Michigan, when her UK treatment has finished and she is in remission, but needs help raising £120,000. Take a look at the article and fundraising events that are planned and please try and support at least one of them. it really will make a huge difference. We also have our usual Twyford Pantry and Buckingham Garden Centre items and exciting competitions where you could WIN a family of four ticket to watch the newly promoted MK Dons, WIN a signed book and the chance to WIN £25 worth of gardening vouchers!
follow us
The winners of the £25 Buckingham Garden Centre vouchers are Nicolle Gibson and Donna Webb. And last but not least, Samantha Severn is the winner of our signed book competition, donated by Coles Books

Flaming June, with the pure colour and splendour of roses, lilies and hydrangeas, beckons to bring the garden into glorious colour. Elsewhere, productivity and successional sowings are now reaping their cropping rewards for the whole family to enjoy.
Stir-fry lovers will be pleased to know that now is the ideal time to sow oriental leaves such as Pak Choi, Chinese cabbage and Komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach) as their genetic make-up means they very

All climbing plants including Clematis, Honeysuckle and Trachelospermum (pictured) will benefit from some additional fertiliser to help encourage and extend flowering, especially if the weather is dry. Do make sure you water all climbing plants, especially anything newly established this season. If you have topiary trained trees including Box, Yew and other conifers, do ensure the plants are kept adequately moist and fed. TOP TIPS FOR COOKING THE PERFECT STEAK
3. Oil the steak not the pan - use high burning oil like Vegetable, Sunflower or Groundnut instead of olive oil - you want a high burning point 4. Season with salt up to 2 hours before – this will NOT draw out moisture but will allow steak to absorb the salt and even the seasoning – season with pepper just before cooking 5. Get pan/BBQ REALLY hot (be careful as fat will spit) 6. Cook steak for total time advised but cook each side in 1 minute intervals to even out cooking, keep

BROCCOLI AND BACON SALAD SERVES 6
finely grate in the garlic. Add all the other dressing ingredients, season with sea salt and black pepper, and whisk. Halve, deseed and finely slice the tomatoes and chop the chives, reserving the flowers. Add to your broccoli and bacon bits. Dress it all really well, and check the seasoning. If needed, add a splash more vinegar. If you’ve got any chive flowers, sprinkle those over the top and serve as soon as possible. Source: Jamie Oliver’s ‘Jamie’s America’ cookbook
Ingredients 2 large heads of broccoli 6 rashers of dry-cured smoked streaky bacon finely sliced olive oil 3 firm red tomatoes ½ a bunch of fresh chives (15g with flowers if you can get them) Dressing ½ a clove of garlic 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar Method... Remove the broccoli florets from the stem and cut into very small florets. Discard the thick dry base of the stalk and cut the rest in half lengthways and finely slice. Blanch your broccoli florets and sliced stalks really quickly in boiling salted water for 60 seconds, just long enough to soften the broccoli but still leave it with a bit of a bite. Drain in a colander and spread it around a clean tea towel to steam dry (this is important because it will help the dressing cling to the broccoli). Once completely dry, transfer to a serving dish. Fry the bacon on a medium heat with a small splash of olive oil until crisp and golden, then spoon most of the bacon bits over your broccoli. Any leftover fat in the pan can be used in your salad dressing. Pour it into a mixing bowl, then peel and

Remove from the freezer and use two forks to crush the ice into a slush. Divide the mixture between four large tumblers, then pour ¼ of the elderflower over each. Garnish with raspberries and serve immediately with straws. Sip and enjoy! Source: www.goodhousekeeping.com

PESKY PARASITE ADVICE FROM WINDMILL VETS FLEAS
WORMS
Prevention is much, much easier than cure where fleas are concerned. The flea you see is truly the tip of the iceberg (you should see what’s lurking in your house in the form of eggs, larvae and pupae!)
Hopefully your puppy will have received at least one worming treatment from the breeder and it should continue to be treated monthly until at least two years of age in respect of providing lung worm cover. Thereafter, for the health of the dog and members of the family, your dog should receive routine worming treatments; the frequency of which will depend on his or her lifestyle, whether it scavenges, and if you have young children in the family etc.
Our recommendation is to treat pets regularly with a suitable and effective veterinary product. Our qualified staff will be able to advise you. TICKS Never pull off a tick; you may leave its head under the skin, which could cause an infection. Kill it quickly, preferably by direct application of a suitable veterinary product or cotton wool soaked with same. It will wither and drop off after a couple of days, or very gently tease it out with a tick remover. Contact the practice for further advice.
