Editor’s Note

Welcome to the October and November issue of Community Contact magazine! I can’t believe it is time to dust off our coats and get ready for the autumn and winter months ahead! 2020 is certainly flying by, and to be honest, I think most of us are quite glad about that! Archie has now started school and settling in well.

It seems like yesterday I was

from Place Eight Wellness.

announcing his arrival in the October / November 2016 magazine! So far he is really enjoying it and counting the sleeps at the weekend until he can go back again – lets hope it stays that way!

If you have any virtual events that you would like to list free in Community Contact – simply email me laura@communitycontact.co.uk

In this issue we have a brand new food blogger joining our magazine! Her name is Katie Edwards, also known as Kates Food Adventures on Instagram and Facebook. She really is the girl about town and knows the food scene in our lovely market towns and beyond! We also have our regular recipes from Tina at the Twyford Pantry, gardening tips from our gardening blogger Jessica and how to ‘beat the bloat’ with our wellness blogger, Louise Lambert Day

We will be launching some exciting things over on Instagram and Facebook so make sure you like or follow us for the most up to date information from us and our local area. We wish you all the best for the autumn months and don’t forget to put your clocks back on 25th October!

In our history, humans have always held fascination with crystals and gemstones. Colour and form hold a massive intrigue and for ancient civilisations only the most vibrant of rocks for example Turquoise (blue/green in colour) would be considered a precious gift from the gods. The Native American Indians believed Turquoise was a gift from the sky and the rains to the earth and is a symbol of bountiful harvest, fertility, luck, and still to this day the Indigenous people of the Americas hold Turquoise in high regard that it is the most dominant feature in their jewellery and ceremonial adornment. Crystals and stones are held in high regard because of the energy they emit. Everything around us is energy, we know today that everything is in constant vibration. Everything made from the earth has energy and we are all vibrating at different frequencies. Ever noticed how happy you feel

when you are laughing with a group of friends that is because the vibes are high and transferable, you literally connect to others energy! They are formed by the earth through the alchemy of transformation and metamorphosis. The combination of extreme heat & pressure can change and create a crystal or rock depending on the mineral deposits around. When you wear a crystal, you are connecting to its energy and unique frequency. I wear different crystals daily depending on what energy I am wanting to channel. This includes things like clarity and encouragement or if I need aid in a situation. There is a different crystal to help amplify and support that energy needed.

I personally wear and adorn myself with crystals because I think the ‘skin on skin’ connection is powerful, and the crystals energy can be called upon when needed. Wearing crystals are like having friends with you all the time. Love your stones and look after them. Marisela is a yoga teacher hosting classes, workshops and retreats. Marisela also is a jewellery maker and energy tool crafter. You can find more information about Yoga and crystal jewellery & healing tools at www.adornbym.com follow Marisela on insta: ADORN.BY.M

Connecting with crystals will raise your natural vibrations. Think of them as tools to help enhance, teach, support and guide you through life’s eb & flows.

Thrive Chiropractic & Health Clinic, Buckingham Chiropractic ~ Sports Massage ~ Podiatry

Thrive is a family owned and run clinic located just minutes from the town centre at the Bourton Business Centre with the charming countryside surroundings of the Manor Farm and Larder CafĂŠ. The owners and Buckingham residents, Garry and Stephanie Doig, opened the clinic in February 2019 and started practicing from the Bourton Mill Health & Leisure Club. After a successful first year they moved into their dream location at the Bourton Business Centre in March 2020. After completely renovating the new premises the clinic now has 5 treatment rooms, a reception and waiting area as well as ample free and convenient parking with some stunning views over the Manor farm. Thrive clinic is currently expanding and now has male and female chiropractors, a sports massage and rehabilitation specialist, a podiatrist/chiropodist and also aims to add more skilled professionals to the team offering a wider range of healthcare services. The clinic

provides natural healthcare solutions to the Buckingham community and surrounding areas including Milton Keynes and Bicester.

Garry and Stephanie Doig.

A word from the owners: “Thrive clinic is dedicated to delivering safe and effective health care to the highest standard. You are never too young or too old to benefit from Chiropractic care. This year we have expanded the Pumpkin Patch significantly and have planted approximately 40,000 seeds in a wide range of different varieties, including huge white Polar Bears, tiny munchkins, traditional orange Jack O’lanterns, warty skinned gourds and weird/wonderful squashes to name a few.

The Patch MK was created in 2019 and was inspired by us always being on the hunt for activities to enjoy as a family. Our aim is to create a unique experience which will be enjoyed by all ages and create memories and traditions which last a life time. We loved welcoming everyone to the Pumpkin Patch and following on from this decided to host a summer event in 2020 and so the Sunflower event was formed. After the Coronavirus Pandemic started in March we wanted to provide family’s, friends and individuals with a safe outdoor environment to enjoy. We worked hard with the relevant organisations to ensure we were able to meet the necessary requirements to obtain the Visit England ‘We’re Good to Go’ official mark alongside restricting our visitor numbers and carefully monitoring these throughout the event. The Sunflower Patch was made up of Sunflowers, Wildflowers, a Sweetcorn Maize and a Wheat field. We built a viewing platform to enable visitors to get their photos above the sunflowers and cut paths through the sunflowers, sweetcorn and wheat so people were able to walk amongst them and enjoy the beautiful sounds, smells and insects which the flowers and foliage play home to.

Our pumpkins are planted at the patch towards the end of May and grow over the summer months to develop into the beautiful pumpkins we have available in October. The Pumpkins will be cut free from the vine in advance of us opening so they are easy for our visitors to pick and we will have wheelbarrows available for visitors to use when choosing their pumpkins. We have some exciting creations up our sleeve for the Pumpkin Patch alongside our Barrel train and our straw bale creations! Please keep an eye out on Instagram and Facebook for further updates on these! Last year we raised £1055.11 in donations at the Pumpkin Patch for Milton Keynes Neonatal ward and we were delighted to be able to donate some of our sunflowers to the incredible staff at MK hospital following on from the Sunflower Patch this summer. We plan to open the Pumpkin Patch the weekend of the 10th/11th October and will be open on selected dates until and including the 31st October. Further details and how to secure an entry slot will be released on social media soon. Best wishes Rosalyn, Joe, Bruce and Tilly

Joe is a 4th generation farmer who’s family have always farmed in and around Milton Keynes and as farmers we understand the importance of working in harmony with the countryside and have on a separate area of the farm planted over 40 acres of wild flowers to aid the pollinators. We have also planted other areas around the farm to provide a source of food for wild birds over the autumn and winter months.

Are you being a misery guts? with Louise Lambert-Day - Place Eight Wellness

For many, the last few months has been tough, on not only our physical health, but also our mental wellbeing. The disconnection from loved ones and work colleagues, too much time inside - often on our own, as well as anxiety about what’s happening around us has done nothing for our ability to cope with life or to keep anxiety or depression from rising. The truth is there’s a fair amount of advice about how to manage our anxieties through exercise, mindfulness and getting enough sleep but far less on how to feed ourselves for a healthy mind. The fact is that how we nourish our bodies, as well as the health of our digestive system generally, can have a huge impact on our mental wellness; our ability to cope with problems, our memory and concentration and how we function on many levels. Have you ever felt butterflies in your stomach, or not been able to get off the loo from nerves? We now know that our brain and our gut talk to each other and are intimately connected. A troubled brain can send signals to the gut but equally, a troubled intestine sends signals to the brain. Stress therefore can affect the health of our gut and importantly the health of our gut can affect our mental health. Neurons are cells found in our brain and central

22

nervous system and tell our body how to behave. There are about 100 billion neurons in the brain, but our gut also contains about 500 million neurons, connected to our brain through nerves in our nervous system. Our gut and brain are connected through chemicals called neurotransmitters which are produced in the brain and control feelings and emotions. For example, the neurotransmitter Serotonin contributes to feelings of happiness and also helps to control our body clock. Many of these neurotransmitters are also produced by gut cells as well as the trillions of microbes living there. In fact, a huge amount of Serotonin is produced in the gut. Gut microbes also produce GABA; a neurotransmitter which helps to control fear and anxiety. In recent years, such organisms in the gut have been implicated in in a range of conditions that affect mood, especially anxiety and depression. The good news is that bacteria don’t just make you feel low; the right ones can also improve your mood. Poor diet, illness, long term antibiotics, medications and stress can all affect the balance of microbes in our gut. If we want to pay as much attention to our mental health as we do our physical health then we need to take care of our

gut and this means replacing any ‘missing’ good bacteria and eating a whole, unprocessed diet, limiting the use of antibiotics wherever possible and managing stress.

TOP CALMING FOODS Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (antiinflammatory) - salmon and other oily fish, avocado, chi and flax seed, walnuts. Magnesium rich foods (regulate the body’s stressresponse system and encourage relaxation) - pumpkin and squash seeds, nuts (especially almonds), legumes, avocado, dark chocolate. Fermented foods (probiotics) - natural yoghurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir. Vitamin C and antioxidant rich foods oranges, lemons, berries such as blueberries and strawberries, broccoli, peppers, spinach, cauliflower.

Wholegrains (contain B vitamins which are essential for calming the nervous system) - oats, rice, quinoa. Peppermint tea, chamomile green teas – relaxing and full of antioxidants Dark chocolate – boosts the release of dopamine in the brain Tryptophan rich foods (converted to 5-HTP in the brain which is then converted to serotonin, a relaxing neurotransmitter) – turkey, eggs, bananas, chicken.

Hi, i’m Jess

AUTUMN IN THE GARDEN WITH JESS TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING It’s the start of the end in October. There is a different feel in the air and I absolutely love it, the colours in the garden change and the light also has a wonderful warmth to it… when it’s not raining and howling a gale but I love the start of Autumn so I’m going to romanticise it and picture it the way I’d like it to be. I like to think of this time of year as putting the garden to bed but actually there is so much to be done to prepare for next year. A great job to do now is to sow sweet peas ready to plant out next April. They will need to be sown in deep seed trays and potted onto grown good strong plants. Keep them in the greenhouse or on a windowsill, it’s going to get too cold for them outside but getting a head start now, will mean you will have those gorgeous scented blooms much sooner next year. I’m already looking forward to them.

TRY TO EXTEND DAHLIA SEASON Keep on dead heading these beautiful blooms right up until the first frosts, when their foliage will blacken and you’ll have to say goodbye for another year. But enjoy them right until the end. I

28

I have always loved being outside and noticing the wildlife that plants and flowers bring into our gardens. As a youth I was much happier surrounded by my pets and plants than anything else, this has never changed. Now at the age of 40 I think I’m where I’m meant to be; surrounded once again by plants and pets. For the last 12 years I have been a florist, I have owned my own shop, been studio based and freelanced for some amazing florists having the opportunity to work at amazing venues all over the country. During the last 5 years I have had the space to grow my own flowers, often adding the perfect bloom into my floral displays. Right now a new chapter is opening up and there is much more flower growing in my future. These articles will be my thoughts and observations of the garden as it grows and changes.

weather watch and when I know it is going to turn, I cut them all into vases and enjoy them inside for the last precious days.

NEW VENTURE This picture may look like a simple field of grain but to me it pictures my future. This field has, by now, been harvested, ploughed and planted with shrubs and flowers and will be my new cutting garden.

‘Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the onlyway to do great work is to love what you do’ - Steve Jobs

I will be embarking on a new business venture growing cut flowers. I’ve been moving in this direction very slowly for years now but 2020 has given me time to push forward and take the plunge. I will add pictures of my progress into future articles and keep you up to date on my successes and failures.

IN THE GARDEN NOW Plant out spring bulbs but not tulips. I’ve always been told to plant tulip bulbs after the first frost and I’m sticking to that rule. Dry seed pods. Being a florist, I use all the seed pods and dried flowers for arrangements throughout Autumn and Winter. I’ve already cut back and dried my Alliums, Poppies and Scabious and I have trays of lovely sunflower heads too, some for decoration and some for the seeds.

Get ahead with your veg. You can sow garlic and broad beans this month too for eating next year. I’m always jealous of all the allotments at this time of year and with I’d paid more attention to growing my vegetables. I see large leeks and sprouts coming into their own, potatoes and parsnips still being dug and apples and raspberries being picked and eaten. Every Autumn I promise myself that next year I’ll grow to eat and every spring I have sown too many flowers and my beds are full. One day I’ll get the balance right.

LOCAL FOOD HEROES Hi! My name is Kate and I’m the new food columnist for Community Contact Magazine. I’m here to talk to you about all things food in Buckingham and the surrounding areas. You can also follow me on Instagram and Facebook at @katesfoodadventures for more foodie updates.

I thought I would use my first article as a chance to reflect on lockdown and the local food heroes who helped to make it a tad more bearable (hopefully by the time this gets published we haven’t been plunged back into a full blown lockdown!). First up is Binn Smokehouse. At the beginning of lockdown, when we were all basically house-bound and preparing home cooked food three meals a day (plus weaning a 6 month old over in our house), being able to get some delicious restaurant quality food, safely delivered to your door was such a welcome treat. The guys and girls over a Binn definitely supplied this, and it was great to see local people step up and offer their time as delivery drivers to help them to provide this new service to the community. Another takeaway hero in those early dark days was Direct Pizza Company. Not only did they continue to deliver their great quality pizzas to our door 7 days a

the phones and get supplies out to as many people as possible. Finally, I would like to mention Sophie Lewis who runs Pure Patisserie. Having recently started her own company providing delicious desserts to local restaurants and bespoke celebration cakes, Sophie was initially worried for the future of her business. However she managed to pivot beautifully and has been busier then ever during lockdown, supplying the local area with loaded brownies, cream teas and dessert boxes delivered to their door or popped in the post (who wouldn’t want a slab of brownie arriving through their letterbox?!) The Twyford Pantry Is it me or has Autumn arrived rather quickly? One minute we are turning our gardens into make-do holiday destinations, and the next, the leaves are falling, and we are putting on socks and grabbing a cardigan! Despite the

Honey Fermented Carrot Jam Makes 200g You will need a 200g sterilised airtight jar

occasional storms, we cannot say we haven’t been blessed with pockets of a wonderful summer and well timed it was, everything seems more manageable in better weather somehow. And boy have we had some bumper homegrown crops to enjoy too! I never knew courgette plants could generate so much!! Hope you have enjoyed the fruits of your labour – there seems to have been plenty to share around, I know in Twyford there has been a lot of sharing and doorstep offerings, don’t you just love village life! If you find yourself with a few too many carrots, I saw a fantastic recipe in this month’s Country Living Magazine for Honey Fermented Carrot Jam which has a number of uses and I can’t wait to try it. I also have an easy recipe for Pumpkin Gnocchi with Sage Butter Sauce which sounds delicious. TIP! make sure you

Ingredients 75g carrots coarsely grated 1 tsp raisins

use a pumpkin that is not oversized and mass

1 tsp freshly grated ginger

produced for carving or you’ll miss out on the

¼ tsp ground mixed spice

flavour! Lastly online we have Churros with Chocolate Sauce which can be a sociable sharing pudding or an occasional treat.

2 cardamom pods, seeds removed and ground Grated orange zest, 1 tbsp fresh squeezed orange juice 75g runny honey

Whatever you rustle up in the kitchen, I hope you enjoy the creating as much as the eating! Savour the comfort foods now it’s getting colder…and before we know it we’ll be thinking about Christmas planning but enough of that for now! Stay safe as always, Love Tina xx

46

Method Mix grated carrot, raisins, ginger, ground spice and cardamom in a bowl. Add orange zest to you tasting (add a bit and try, then add more as preferred). Pack the mix into the jar. Pour the honey over the mix into the jar so it covers everything and fills the jar, stir carefully

to mix then add remaining honey but do leave a gap at the top to keep some air in the jar for the fermenting process. Cover the jar but do not seal the lid at this stage. Stand on a plate at room temperature for a week, it will bubble over slightly. Wipe down the jar, (sorry it may be bit messy!) then seal with airtight lid and store in fridge up to 6 weeks keeping contents submerged in honey. Use on toast, to top a carrot cake, to pimp up a salad or anything else you think might work! source: Country Living Magazine - Oct 2020

Pumpkin Gnocchi with Sage Butter Sauce

Ingredients - for the gnocchi 1 medium-large baking potato – baked, cooled, skinned and grated 200g pumpkin puree 1 egg 250g plain flour 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons butter

Ingredients - for sage butter sauce 2 tablespoons butter a few sage leaves and a smashed clove of garlic 1 tablespoon flour 1 tablespoon double cream 1/2 cup starchy water from boiling the gnocchi

Method Mix grated potato with pumpkin puree. Now the messy bit! Pile flour onto clean surface and put the potato/pumpkin mix in the middle. Make a well, lightly beat the egg with a little salt and pour into the well. Using your hands, mix all ingredients into a dough. Don’t overmix. When it starts to come together, form the dough into a mostly-smooth, rounded little loaf. Cut off slices of the mound and roll each one into a long rope. Cut the rope into bite sized pieces. Place the gnocchi pieces on a plate (make sure they’ve got a little flour coating so they don’t stick). Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Add the gnocchi, carefully, one at a time, to the water. You may need to work in batches. When the gnocchi rise to the top of the pot of boiling water, immediately remove them with a slotted spoon. Set aside. Melt your butter in a large frying pan and fry the gnocchi gently until lightly browned – do not stir or they will break. Remove from pan and make the sauce. Butter Sauce: In the same pan, add butter, sage leaves, and garlic clove. Let the garlic and sage cook for a few minutes over low heat until sage is slightly crispy then remove from heat. Take out sage and garlic, make sure butter is fully melted then add the flour and whisk. Add in the cream and whisk. Add the starchy water slowly, whisking to make a sauce that is as thick/thin as you want. Gently stir the gnocchi into the sauce and serve topped with the sage leaves and Parmesan. Enjoy! source: pinchofyum.com

Hey Hi Hello Five decades of Pop Culture from Britains first Female DJ

by Annie Nightingale Format: Hardback Edition Price: £20.00 Hand Signed by Annie Nightingale to a Title Page Available from Cole’s Books - coles-books.co.uk

Hey Hi Hello is a greeting we have all become familiar with, as Annie Nightingale cues up another show on Radio One. Always in tune with the nation’s taste, yet effortlessly one step ahead for more than five decades, in this book Annie digs deep into her crate of memories, experiences and encounters to deliver an account of a life lived on the frontiers of pop cultural innovation. As a dj and broadcaster on radio, tv and the live music scene, Annie has been an invigorating and necessarily disruptive force, working within the establishment but never playing by the rules. She walked in the door at Radio One as a rebel, its first female broadcaster, in 1970. Fifty years later she became the station’s first CBE in the New Year’s Honours List; still a vital force in British music, a dj and tastemaker who commands the respect of artists, listeners and peers across the world. Hey Hi Hello tells the story of those early, intimidating days at Radio One, the Ground Zero moment of punk and the epiphanies that arrived in the late 80s with the arrival of acid house and the Second Summer of Love. It includes faithfully reproduced and never before seen encounters with Bob Marley, Marc Bolan, The Beatles and

52

bang-up-to-date interviews with Little Simz and Billie Eilish. Funny, warm and candid to a fault, Annie Nightingale’s memoir is driven by the righteous energy of discovery and passion for music. It is a portrait of an artist without whom the past fifty years of British culture would have looked very different indeed. About the Author: Annie Nightingale CBE is Britain’s first female DJ, and longest serving broadcaster on BBC Radio 1. She celebrated her 50th anniversary in 2020. Her radio shows are listed among 50 cultural highlights by the Observer critics’ panel, March 2020. A presenter, documentarian and journalist, she was the sole anchor of BBC’s music TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test and associated TV programmes for 11 years during 1970s and 80s. Her previous published memoirs are Chase The Fade (1982) and Wicked Speed (2000). As well as touring the world as a live DJ, she has also released music compilation collections, including Annie On One (Heavenly) and Masterpiece (Ministry Of Sound). Annie was born in South West London and lives in West London.

Would you like to make a difference? At Home Instead Senior Care we have a wonderful group of CARE Givers and this is the story of one of them, Melanie. We are always looking for brilliant people to join us so if Melanie’s account strikes a chord with you and you are considering part-time work, please get in touch for a chat.

Melanie’s Story “I was fast approaching 50 and my daughter was going to be heading off to university with my son following a year later. Having been virtually a stay at home mum, ‘chief cook & bottle washer’, I recognised life was about to change. I didn’t want a job that meant a 9-5 Monday to Friday commitment with little flexibility and that is when I read about ‘Home Instead’. Many prospective employees have a misconstrued idea of what we actually do and wrongly assume that it is a case of clearing up wee, poo etc. In reality it’s a far cry from that and I believe there are many women in the 50+ age group that have the natural skills and time on their hands to help make a difference. And making a difference is what it is all about. The reassuring thing about working for Home Instead is having the backing of the office staff and the access to training. I love my job and see the benefits of clients accepting help sooner rather than later. It can make life considerably easier and safer because they no longer attempt to do the things that could lead to falls, or experience

anxiety and depression about not being able to accomplish easy day to day living. Some days my work can be as simple as opening difficult food packages, cooking a meal, taking the washing out of the machine, changing the bed, wrapping up a parcel, prompting medication and best of all having a chat. As one housebound client commented “you bring the outside world in” and I can assure you it brightens their day. For an older person, accepting help can be so difficult. But they soon realise that we are not there to take over but simply to help become an extension of them, doing the things they find difficult. My clients and I work together and grow together. I might not always get things right but as we get to know each other I discover their likes and dislikes. I think it would be advantageous for any elderly person to consider help for just an hour a week initially. They can make a list of all the things they struggled with throughout the week and then as their Carer we work together to resolve the problem. That’s what we do to ensure clients stay in their own HOME INSTEAD of having to give up their independence. As I say to them “Look at all the things you’ve done for others in your life. Isn’t it about time you spoilt yourself”.
