FEBRUARY - MARCH 2017
World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. This is the 20th year there’s been a World Book Day, and on 2nd March 2017 children of all ages will come together to appreciate reading. Very loudly and very happily. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. That’s why we will be sending schools (including those nurseries and secondary schools that have specially registered to participate), packs of Book Tokens and age-ranged World Book Day Resource Packs (age-ranged into Nursery/Pre-School, Primary and Secondary) full of ideas and activities, display material and more information about how to get involved in World Book Day. What happens? Thanks to the generosity of National Book Tokens Ltd, publishers and booksellers, we can send millions of book vouchers to children and young people (some 15 million, in fact: that’s one for nearly every child aged under eighteen in the country). Then… They can take their voucher to a local bookseller and can use it to pick one of TEN (exclusive, new and completely free) books. Or, if they’d rather, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing over £2.99 at a participating bookshop or book club (terms and conditions apply). How can you get involved? Look out for the new downloadable resource packs coming soon and please visit our Resources section which is full of exciting and fun resources based on favourite books, brands, characters and authors. It’s all about getting kids closer to the books and authors they already love, and letting them discover more books and authors they’ll love every bit as much in the future.

Venice Travel Review Venice is a city unlike any other. No matter how often you’ve seen it in photos and films, the real thing is more dreamlike than you could imagine. With canals where streets should be, water shimmers everywhere. It is special to us because it is where Neil popped the question and asked me to be his wife in 2014 down a small alley way on a jetty on the Grand Canal! The fabulous palaces and churches reflect centuries of history in what was a wealthy trading center between Europe and the Orient. Getting lost in the narrow alleyways is a quintessential part of exploring Venice, but at some point you’ll almost surely end up in Piazza San Marco, where tourists and locals congregate for a coffee or an aperitif. Although there are days when tourists outnumber locals by two to one, Venice never loses its capacity to enchant. Summer brings some of the most daunting crowds, but there’s a reason why they come: the sheer loveliness of an exquisite city that seems miraculously built on water. It’s important to remember that, even at peak visitor times, you are never more than a bridge and an alley away from a more secluded city, full of secret campi (squares), handsome Gothic palazzi and

lively neighbourhood wine bars. In any season, Venice’s churches and museums offer antique glories aplenty, but there is also a vibrant contemporary art scene, even away from the Art Biennale. When to Go Venice is a unique, magical place 365 days a year. But much of the time you’ll be sharing that magic with thousands of other visitors. Numbers peak in summer, despite the heat, humidity and swarms of mosquitoes. Spring and autumn are much more pleasant months where the rooms are cheap and the city is reclaimed by Venetians.
An exception is Carnevale, in the two weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday (Feb/ Mar), which brings in hordes of revellers and sends accommodation prices through the roof. Other regular annual events include the June-November Art Biennale (odd years) and Architecture Biennale

(even years), the Film Festival (10 days end of August to early September) and local festivities like the Festa del Redentore on the third weekend in July, when the city and lagoon are lit up by fireworks.
Top Reasons to Go Landmarks - The Rialto bridge and Palazzo Ducale are simply unforgettable. Festivals - Carnevale and the Biennale are celebrations of art, film, music, and dance. ART Titian, Tintoretto, and Tiepolo, as well as contemporary artists, are represented. Seafood - Fish so fresh many restaurants boast they don’t even own a refrigerator. Churches - The Basilica di San Marco and Santa Maria della Salute are two of many. Shopping - Spectacular masks, candycolored glass, paper goods, lace, and linens. Know before you go Currency: euro. Most cashpoint machines work with international cards, via the Cirrus circuit. International dialing codes: dial 00 39 041 xxx for Venice numbers from abroad, 041 xxx from inside Italy. Dial 00 to get an international line, followed by the country code.
Emergency services: 112 (Carabinieri); 113 (State Police) British Embassy in Rome: (00 39 06 4220 0001; ukinitaly.fco.gov.uk). There is no longer a British consulate in Venice. The Milan consulate (via San Paolo 7) is open 9am-12.30pm, 2-4pm Mon-Fri, or call during office hours on 00 39 02 723 001. Visitor passes Entrance to the city-owned museums around St Mark’s square (Museo Correr, Doge’s Palace, Archaeological museum, Marciana library) is via the I Musei di Piazza San Marco multi-ticket which costs €18 (over 65s, students aged 15-25, children 6-14, €11; children 5 and under, free; families of two adults and at least one child aged 6-18 pay €11 each). You can extend this to all city-owned museums with the Museum Pass (€24; over 65s, students aged 15-25, children 6-14, €18; under 5s, free). Musei di Piazza San Marco ticket validity is three months, Museum Pass six months. Both these options are purchasable at the sights themselves or online through visitmuve.it. Tipping Italians tip very little; 5% is ample, and it’s often enough just to round the bill up to the nearest 5 or 10 euros. If the bill says ‘servizio incluso’, there’s no need to tip at all.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
The changes in seasons are always memorable – for example when the first snowdrops appear and buds begin to show signs of swelling. The garden is beginning to stir and I’m sure many of our fingers are beginning to itch with anticipation!
F
ORCE rhubarb plants by covering the crown with a bucket or maybe an ornate forcing pot. This will produce tender pink stems ready for eating in about eight week’s time. Divide and lift old clumps. Elsewhere on the veggie plot, pre-warm the soil by covering with landscape fabric, sheets of black plastic or maybe some carpet underlay you may have lying around, especially if you like to follow the advice from BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time’s Bob Flowerdew! Get this in position several weeks before sowing. Single stretches of soil can be warmed by setting up a polythene tunnel cloche and later the cloche can be used to protect crops when flowering (Strawberries) or by changing the cover to netting it will help to keep the Cabbage White Butterfly caterpillar at bay too! Take time to check through any vegetables and fruit that were stored in the autumn, such as Carrots, Onions, Shallots, Swedes, Turnips, Potatoes and Apples, because they can easily become infested with pests or become rotten or harbour mould that can spread to the rest of the stored crop. You can also make a start on some early sowings of Peas, Broad Beans, Lettuce and other salad crops under cloches or from March directly in the vegetable garden. There’s still time to get bare root Strawberries planted, either in rows in well prepared soil, or alternatively you can grow them in large pots filled with a gritty 50:50 mix of John Innes No3 Compost and a Multi-purpose Compost. It is crucial with strawberries to get the planting depth correct (see photo guide), otherwise plants may fail to establish properly.
R
E-VAMP and energise your containers with some early spring bulb colour with the likes of Winter Aconite (pictured), early Narcissus ‘Tête-à-Tête’ (in 6-packs, £4.99), Snowdrops (including Elwesii, ‘Flore Pleno’ and Nivalis) and Tulip ‘Red Riding Hood’ amongst others. We’ll have small 9cm pots (£1.99 each or 3 for £5.00) as well as larger 1-litre pots (£3.99 each / 3 for £10.00) available from mid-January onwards. You can easily add further seasonal colour with the likes of winter hardy Pansies and Violas together with Primulas, all in a wide range of varieties and colours.

CREEN out unwanted eyesores and buildings with an ornamental tree or two. Good screening trees which help provide a privacy barrier include Betulas (Birches, pictured), Malus (Crab apples), Sorbus aucuparia (Mountain Ash), and Holm Oak to name just a few. It’s always a good idea to have a chat with the neighbours before planting any tall growing trees or a new hedge line so its amicable from the beginning. Remember to position the trees at least 1m (3ft) away from fence and boundary lines. You will need to improve the soil well when digging out the planting hole and remember before replacing the soil you have removed improve it with some well-rotted manure, garden compost or Tree, Shrub & Rose Planting Compost adding a handful of Bonemeal in as well. The tree roots can also be treated with some friendly-fungi RootGrow just prior to planting to give your tree the best possible start. Any plant growing relatively close to a fence potentially will be in a rain shadow, so do mulch around the base of such plants with a generous mulch of compost or composted bark to help retain moisture around the plant’s roots. Do keep the plants regularly watered in the spring and summer – about two gallons of water twice a week per plant is usually sufficient to keep it happy.
M
UST-DO’S Despite the low temperatures and short daylight hours, there are some useful tasks that can be done. If the weather is mild, you can still plant roses and bare rooted hedging (pictured red stemmed Dogwoods), shrubs, soft fruit bushes and fruit trees. If you have planted any trees or shrubs during the winter months, check that they haven’t been lifted by frost. Regularly check any bulbs or corms that have been stored away for winter and make sure that they are not going rotten or showing signs of mould. Cut off any damaged tubers from dahlias. Ensure they have sufficient protection by recovering them with dry compost or straw.
N
O sooner we are thinking of what seeds to sow then the timely arrival of summer flowering bulbs make their appearance at the Garden Centre. It’s a good idea to start planning your pots and beds and where possible, secure stock before many of the good reliable varieties sell out. This especially applies to Lilies (pictured), Dahlias, Tuberous Begonias and the more choice bulbs such as, Criniums, Eucomis, Nerines and Zantedeschia.

TART chitting your first early potatoes by placing them in a
cool, bright but frost-free place. But just a minute, what does ‘chitting’ mean? Chitting is basically another word for sprouting. What you do when you chit your seed potatoes is basically speeding up the developing process of the potato, by exposing it to light and, more importantly, a bit of warmth. This will cause the eyes of the seed potato to start sprouting. The sprouts should be small, knobbly, and green/purple in colour. If you end up with long, white coloured sprouts, it means there’s not enough light, or you’re sprouting potatoes sold for consumption. So, why do we chit potatoes? The reason for chitting potatoes is that you start the growing process off before planting your seed potatoes, so once you do plant them out in the soil, you’ve given them a head start. In an ideal world, this also means that you will get an earlier harvest and a slightly better crop as well. To find out more about growing potatoes in containers or in the ground please come along to our Potato Weekend over the 4th & 5th February, 10am-4pm each day. Our Special Weekend is in two halves - Saturday 4th February is our celebration of the Potato with our annual Potato Day headed up by Thompson & Morgan’s top vegetable expert, Colin Randel. We’ll also be welcoming local members of the National Vegetable Society, so again there will be plenty of top growing advice on hand too. On Sunday, it’s Apple Grafting with The Mid Shires Orchard Group and their apple experts as well as top fruit expert Fritz De Zutter. The event runs from 10am-4pm over both days. We have a comprehensive range of First, Second Earlies and Main crop varieties, some pre-packed but mostly loose so you can choose exactly how few or many you want of each variety. To find out more, check our listing on our website. www.buckingham-nurseries.co.uk

Why do puppies chew? - Advice from the Blue Cross All puppies enjoy and need to chew. This is partly to relieve some of the discomfort they experience during teething (between three and seven months of age) and also to help facilitate the removal of the puppy teeth and the eruption of the adult set. Puppies also have a huge desire to explore their environment and as they don’t have hands, picking things up and chewing is one of the ways they like to find out about the world in which they live in! To help satisfy your puppy’s desire to chew and explore, it’s important to provide a variety of different items: Chews Unlike toys, chews are designed for nibbling and gnawing and are essential if you want your puppy to chew acceptable items instead of your furniture! Examples of chews include dental sticks, pressed hide and rawhide twists. Kongs Most dog toys aren’t designed for hard chewing and some will be easily damaged if you allow your puppy to chew on them for too long. An excellent choice for this purpose is a chew toy such as a Kong (available from pet shops). This is a firm rubber toy, hollow on the inside and which can withstand lots of chewing. If you stuff biscuits inside the Kong or smear some cheese spread inside, your puppy will work to get the food out, and will nibble, lick and chew on the toy for some time. Kongs are also good at stimulating play and chase behaviour, since they bounce unpredictably in different directions when thrown.
Activity balls These are hollow dimpled balls, the size of a small football, with two holes. If you place small pieces of dry food inside (such as a portion of your puppy’s daily food ration), your puppy has to roll the ball around to get the food to drop out of the holes. This keeps them occupied for quite some time. How long will I need to provide chews for my puppy? Once a young dog reaches adolescence (between seven and 12 months), they often have an uncontrollable desire to chew even more than they did when they were a puppy. This could be because it’s the time that the adult teeth settle into the jawbone which could be uncomfortable for some dogs. Young dogs are also easily bored at this time, so it’s important that you meet their needs by providing the right amount of exercise and mental stimulation. Although the desire to chew will lessen gradually as your dog gets older it’s important to remember that most dogs need to chew throughout their lives - for pleasure, to exercise the jaw and to keep teeth clean. Chewing is also a calming activity and most dogs seem to find it immensely satisfying, so it’s important that you provide appropriate items to fulfill this need. I’d like to introduce the concept of Mindful Eating to you…. Mindful eating is a fantastic way of learning to re-balance your body and mind, take control of your eating habits. Learning to slow down and concentrate on eating. Over time, mindful eating can help you lose weight, reduce binge eating and help you feel mentally positive. All that is required of you is your full attention when you choose to eat any food. What is required: • Eat slowly – take your time. Taste your food • No distractions – turn off your tv, put down your phone. Eat at a table if you have one. Don’t let anything distract you from your meal. • Use your senses – they say we taste with our eyes. Notice your food. How it looks. How it smells. Savour every mouthful. • Learn about your hungers – Physical & psychological. Learn to notice actual hunger and your triggers for eating. • Choose food that contributes to good nutrition for your mind, body and soul. • Notice the food choices you make How you feel about these choices and how your body feels after eating these foods. • Learn to eat without emotions – guilt, anxiety, sadness. • Appreciation of the here and now when it comes to eating. Appreciate the food that’s set in front of you. Appreciate where it comes from and the cost of it. Appreciate what this food will do for you and your body.
When you choose to eat mindfully, you are choosing to take control and appreciate your body. Taking control by taking the time to eat mindfully will allow a sense of logic. Your mind will start to learn that you can be satisfied by food – not the feelings of guilt or shame. You can learn to enjoy your food and as such learn to slow down in general. Our society has become one of 24/7. We can get orders delivered to us same day and as such we are living in a society where demands put immense pressure on us. As such, we rarely give ourselves ‘US TIME’. Eating has become something we do whilst doing something else. It’s a mindless act often done with little time and thought. It takes our brain up to 20 minutes to register that we are full. This means that if you are a fast eater, you will already have sunk too much food into your body without that ‘fullness signal’ being switched on. Allowing yourself to eat mindfully, will slow you down. It will allow you to draw attention to your hunger/fullness switch and you can make informed choices about food and nutrition. Given time, mindful eating can help reduce your body weight. You are less likely to eat emotionally, you will have an increase of energy due to the positive mindful choices and as such you will feel better & treat your body with respect.
