BEAUTIFUL BATH Neil and I recently visited the beautiful city of Bath. I can’t believe I have never been here! In fact, Bath is a city so beautiful and special that it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site!
History Bath was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of it’s famed classical Georgian architectural designs such as the Royal Crescent, The Circus and Pulteney Bridge and also for the wellpreserved historical sites dating from the era of Roman Britain such as the Roman Baths and temple complex. The presence of hot springs and the famous, golden limestone of the area made it popular to the Romans who built the original town, called ‘Aquae Sullis’, which flourished for 400 years. In the eighteenth century the same reasons brought Georgian society to Bath and during this period it was redeveloped with the stunning architecture we love today and almost the entire town centre is a coherent and attractive map of honey-coloured limestone terraces.

Must See’s Roman Baths Bath was founded upon natural hot springs with the steaming water playing a key role throughout its history. Lying in the heart of the city the Roman Baths were constructed around 70 AD as a grand bathing and socialising complex. It is now one of the best preserved Roman remains in the world.
The Romans built a temple high over the courtyard in honour of the goddess Sulis Minerva. Brave visitors can stand before the fearsome Gorgon’s head carved into the pediment, with an animation to show

a reconstructed version of how it would have appeared in Roman times. You can also meet Roman costumed characters and listen to their ancient stories from 10am – 5pm every day.
Vecchio in Florence, is one of the world’s most beautiful bridges. Like the Ponte Vecchio it is one of a handful of historic bridges in the world with shops built into it.
Bath Abbey Looming above the city centre, Bath’s huge abbey church was built between 1499 and 1616, making it the last great medieval church raised in England. Its most striking feature is the west facade, where angels climb up and down stone ladders, commemorating a dream of the founder, Bishop Oliver King. Unfortunately there’s no way out of the 212 steps to the top, but the views worth the slog. If you’re feeling really romantic, you can also book a private tour for two.
Places to eat
The Royal Crescent The Royal Crescent, one of Bath’s most iconic landmarks, was built between 1767 and 1775 and designed by John Wood the Younger. This impressive landmark forms a sweeping crescent of 30 Grade I Listed terrace houses, and is without doubt one of the greatest examples of Georgian architecture anywhere in the UK. Today, it is home to the five-star luxury hotel The Royal Crescent, a museum of Georgian life at No. 1, plus private housing.
Visit their site: www.thebeaufortbath.com you won’t be disappointed!
Pump Rooms The Pump Rooms Restaurant in Bath is one of the city’s most elegant places to enjoy stylish, modern-British cuisine. It is open daily for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. We enjoyed the most delicious PerrierJouët Champagne afternoon tea here for just £38. Afternoon tea is served from 2.30pm. www.romanbaths.co.uk/pumproom-restaurant The Beaufort The Beaufort is a delicious eatery found out on London Road in the heart of Larkhall. They sell delicious food that will suit everyone’s tastes and décor is absolutely gorgeous! I had a home-made chicken Kiev which I can’t recommend highly enough and Neil shared Cote de Boeuf, which isn’t actually on the menu but we pre-ordered a few days in advance.

IN YOUR GARDEN Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
There’s never a dull moment in the garden that’s for sure! However, it’s time to relax a little and appreciate the garden in all its glory, but if you think we’ll have a minute’s rest, think again folks! POTS Continue to water and feed summer containers and hanging baskets regularly to help maintain steady growth and encourage further flowers. Switching feeds is a good idea too. High nitrogen fertilisers such as Miracle-Gro can be alternated with high potassium feeds such as Vitax Q4 Premium Flower & Fruit Fertiliser or any of the specific Tomato fertilisers on the shelf. By doing this you will help to encourage a further flurry of leafy growth which in turn will mean more stems and shoots to carry additional blooms later in the summer. Remember plants are just like us, a change in food doesn’t do any harm and it can be beneficial in the long term! LAWNS Care of the lawn in June and July very much depends on the state of the weather. If it has been hot and dry, there won’t be much new growth, so set the mower blades high and leave the clippings to act as a mulch to preserve what little moisture there is. If the weather has been wet and growth generally lush, lower the blades and collect the clippings. Be on the lookout for weeds, especially in damp weather and remove them as soon as you can identify them. There is still time to apply a selective lawn weedkiller such as Weedol Lawn Weedkiller to eradicate difficult to control weeds such as Dandelion, Plantain and Self-heal. MUST-DO’S Stake any tall or top-heavy Dahlias (pictured) and Lilies to protect them from the wind and rain. Even without winds, the weight of the flowers can easily snap the stems. There is still time to prune your Wisteria by cutting all the whippy sideshoots back to five leaves from the main stem. Now is a good time to spray ground elder (and other perennial weeds) with a glyphosate-based weedkiller as the plant has lots of leaf surface area with which to absorb it. HERBS Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves you can harvest before the frost. If you have the likes of Sage, Lemon Verbena, Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender then now is the time to take semi-ripe cuttings. ROSES Prune your climbing and rambling roses as soon as they have finished flowering, but if they are repeat-flowering roses they produce a much better show through their second flush if they are pruned back a little, cutting back the stems that carried the first flush of flowers. Do make sure all pruned roses are given a generous granular feed such as Toprose or Vitax Q4. Apply this as soon as the plants are pruned and you should find strong replacement growth quickly develops and after a few weeks a further flush of flower buds will be formed. CLEAR algae, blanket weeds and debris from garden ponds, and keep the water level topped up - a spray attachment on the hose will aerate the water, and help the fish. Any pumps on water features should be left on during sultry nights as oxygen levels are lower in such conditions. Remove promptly any dead foliage and blooms from Water Lilies and other aquatic plants. Cover ponds with safety grills in gardens where young children play. These have the additional advantage of preventing leaves falling into the pond.

JUNE - JULY 2016 FLOWERS Keep cutting sweet peas to fill your house with scent and to keep the flowers coming on the plants. Remember they will benefit from a general plant feed applied along the row or at the base of the wigwam every 7-10 days. Sow biennials such as Sweet William, Bellis Daisy, Wallflower and Honesty (Lunaria annua, pictured). These can be sown directly into the soil in shallow drills 15-30cm (6-12inches) apart – they should be deep enough to allow the seeds to be covered with soil to about twice their size. Thin out once the seedlings are showing their true leaves. You can move these plants into their flowering positions around the garden from September onwards. PICK vegetables when young on a regular basis to maintain continuity, quality and a full flavour and continue earthing-up main crop Potatoes (pictured). On ground released from earlier crops sow a succession of quick maturing salad items, such as Radish, Lettuce, Beetroot, Carrots and Spring Onions. Sow later in July - Cabbage, Swede, Turnips, Peas etc. to overwinter until next spring. Keep checking and removing side shoots from cordon Tomatoes. Watch out for the leaves of Garlic, Onions and Maincrop Potatoes turning yellow – this means they are ready to harvest! Pinch out the tips of your Runner Beans once they reach the top of their support. This will encourage more side shoots and flowers to grow lower down on the plant enabling easier picking. Net your soft fruit to keep the birds off. Tidy up your strawberry plants and remove any straw surrounding them. This will help prevent pests and diseases building up. As soon as your summer raspberry canes have fruited prune these back. Remember the new developing green canes should be left and then tied in to a support for fruiting next year. BUGWATCH Watch out for emerging Red Lily Beetle (pictured), Viburnum Beetle and the metallic Rosemary Beetle which can also be present on Lavender. Pick them off by hand or spray in the evening with any of the following options - * Bayer Provado Ultimate Bug Killer (Thiacloprid), Bug Clear Ultra (Acetamiprid)*, Bayer Sprayday Greenfly Killer*, Bayer Provado Ultimate Fruit & Vegetable Bug Killer (Deltamethrin)* or Westland Resolva Bug Killer (Lambda Cyhalothrin)*. Organic gardeners can use natural Pyrethrum/Pyrethrins such as Py Spray Garden Insect Killer*, Bug Clear Gun for Fruit & Veg* or Growing Success Shrub and Flower Bug Killer*. These products should control newly hatched larvae but are likely to be less successful against adult beetles. Remember plants in flower should not be sprayed to avoid harming bees and other pollinating insects. *Do read the instructions on all insecticides carefully before use.

Microblade those brows It doesn’t matter if you like them arched and feathered or straight and bold, eyebrows are arguably the most important facial feature. If you’re not satisfied with the ones you have, there are so many ways to update them, including brow gel, pencils, and even tattooing. But now there’s a very natural option that delivers semi-permanent results. Ladies, we’d like to introduce you to microblading. Unlike the sometimes Sharpie-esque effects of permanent makeup, microblading is more of an embroidery of individual strokes that look just like real hairs. Kate at Tweak Beauty explains that Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in over plucked brows. The Buckingham based eyebrow stylist also revealed that those who just want to add slight definition to their brows are also excellent candidates. If you’re still not sure how the technique differs from tattooing, Kate explains that during the microblading process she uses a special microblading pen to draw on individual strokes one by one. It’s an extremely meticulous process that takes around two hours to complete. The needle used in manual microblading is 3 times thinner than that used with a tattoo machine, which allows her to create very thin, crisp hair strokes that do not blur after healing. Microblading is extremely low maintenance. After healing, you can rub them and enjoy swimming. No special care is required, except for a brief touch-up once a year. The smudge-proof solution will cost you £250 at Tweak Beauty in Buckingham but having perfect, makeup free brows all year round makes it well worth it. For more information contact Kate at Tweak Beauty on 07921 504 296.

The Twyford Pantry Well it looks like summer might not far on the horizon with the odd glimpses of sun here and there. There’s nothing more to lift the spirits than seeing lambs in the fields, children playing in the sun and enjoying sitting outside eating and drinking soaking up the better weather. Since the last edition I have enjoyed celebrating not only my birthday but my parents 70ths so it’s been quite an indulgent few months! Alas the diet never starts but at least summer brings healthier recipes to choose from. The setback might be that I excitedly picked up my birthday present yesterday – a Kenwood KMix stand mixer (long time out of stock now that the BBCs GBBO has ditched Kitchen Aid in favour of Kenwood) so it would be rude not to put it to the test,
plus a good excuse to use up the fabulous eggs our lovely neighbours leave on our doorstep from time to time. Anyway, on with the recipes, nice easy ones this month to give you more time out in the garden – I hope you like them and remember if you have any suggestions yourself or have feedback for more ideas then contact me at twyfordpantry@communitycontact.com Happy cooking and bring on the sun! Love Tina x

Tips From The Jar
To ripen hard avocados wrap them tightly in foil and put in a preheated oven at 200c for 10 mins Separate eggs using your hand, yes it may be messy holding the yolk and letting the white trickle through your fingers but you get far less white left with the yolk Need a wire for cutting soft cheese/slicing a cake horizontally etc – use unscented dental
floss instead

Get more juice from your citrus fruits by rolling them firmly in their skins before juicing In a hurry? Chill a glass of wine with couple of frozen grapes instead of ice-cubes so it doesn’t water it down and you have a fruity treat for afterwards!

ACHIEVE YOUR HAPPY WEIGHT Ok. So sometimes we prod and poke our tummies whilst staring in the mirror and sometimes we suck those tummies in or stretch them out (Don’t worry we’ve all done this).
This has a knock on effect. Clothes start to feel just that little bit tighter, slimmers start to panic and wonder if they can do this? The diet didn’t work maybe?
It’s so easy to criticise ourselves and notice every What then happens is this. The slimmer in their blemish or dimple. However, have you ever noticed panic starts to lose confidence in themselves. They how amazing your body actually is? are upset at not being able to maintain that lower weight that they start to doubt themselves. Ok so not everyone is blessed with the ‘Angelina Jolie’ effect (or whoever it is you think is pretty BUT The self doubt cycle can turn into horrible cycle we are blessed with our ability to do something to of feeling miserable, eating to combat that feeling make ourselves happy. and you guessed it… weight gain. Today I’m looking at our happy weight. We all have a weight in our mind that we want to aspire to. For some people it may be 9 stone others it may be 12. However, it’s hard to know what exactly our happy weight is. For example I recently worked with a slimmer. When she started with me she was nearly 20 stone. She said to me ‘I just want to get to 15 stone’ well let me tell you this. 15 Stone came and went and before she knew it, she was in the 12’s Sometimes when we are losing weight, we get into a flow. We just want to continue losing and why not. You have your mojo and are doing your thing. However, I have seen slimmers really struggle to get low on their scales (not so low that it’s an unhealthy weight) but low for them. It works for them but what can happen is when they stop trying to loose weight, they start to put on a few lbs. It starts with 1-3lbs and the slimmer ignores it. Then it creeps up to 7lbs gain the slimmer starts to panic. Before they know it, nearly 1 stone has gone on.
38
BLEAUGH! Now I can say your BMI should be this… However, the truth is, our bodies have a happy weight. A weight in which it can comfortably manage and maintain. A weight in which you feel comfortable in your clothes but not so you have to eat dust for the rest of your life in order to maintain that low un-sustainable weight. Your happy weight may not necessarily be the lowest weight that you could possibly go but a weight in which you can achieve a happy, healthy balance. Finca El Monte The Home of Handcrafted Colour
Our mission is to bring colour into the lives of everyone who shops with us! Finca El Monte, comes from the “original finca which is located in the mountains of Andalucia and is a working olive & almond farm. The business was based around the farm to provide the opportunity for more people to see and buy the colourful ceramics, made by the artisans in the nearby villages. Additional lines have been added and more will be coming soon, however, we always adhere to the same founding principles of cheerful colour and more importantly to support local communities and, in some small way, to help improve the livelihoods of the artisans, particularly in
40
rural areas and developing countries. All this can be found on our website or in our shop in Buckingham. Simple ethically sourced and handcrafted items are not only so much lovelier to look at than their mass produced rivals, they are also better for everyone involved in the design and creation of each piece. Keeping artisans in work in their local communities and continuing an age old craft well into the future. web. www.fincaelmonte.com tel. 01280 308014 facebook. www.facebook.com/fincaelmonte email. contact@fincaelmonte.com

Everyone Brave Is Forgiven by Chris Cleave Hardback 1st Edition Format: Hardback ISBN: 9781473618695 Price: £16.99 Available from Cole’s Books, Bicester When war is declared, Mary North leaves finishing school unfinished, goes straight to the War Office, and signs up. Tom Shaw decides to give it a miss - until his flatmate Alistair unexpectedly enlists, and the conflict can no longer be avoided. Young, bright and brave, Mary is certain she’d be a marvelous spy. When she is - bewilderingly - made a teacher, she instead finds herself defying prejudice to protect the children her country would rather forget. Tom, meanwhile, finds that he will do anything for Mary. And when Mary and Alistair meet, it is love, as well as war, that will test them in ways they could not have imagined, entangling three lives in violence and passion, friendship and deception, inexorably shaping their hopes and dreams. In a powerful combination of both humour and heartbreak, this dazzling novel weaves little-known history, and a perfect love story, through the vast sweep of the Second World War - daring us to understand that, against the great theatre of world events, it is the intimate losses, the small battles, the daily human triumphs, that change us most. Biographical Notes: Chris Cleave’s debut novel INCENDIARY was a prize-winner and international bestseller and his second novel, THE OTHER HAND has found phenomenal success both in the UK and abroad, hitting number one on the New York Times bestseller list. He is married with three children, and lives in Surrey.
