Restaurant Review - Prego, Buckingham Prego is an independent Italian Restaurant and Wine Bar located on the high street in Buckingham. Prego is owned and operated by Chris Fox who brought the restaurant in April 2014 having been part of the management team since the restaurant opened in 2003. Chris has a dedicated team who provide excellent, freshly prepared food and exceptional service. The restaurant is in a traditional and quirky building which stands it apart from the many chain restaurants in the area. There is even a sunny courtyard garden which is a real sun trap in the summer; bringing a slice of Italy to Buckingham! Why not make the most of the summer sun with a cocktail in the courtyard or enjoy a lunch al fresco? Prego prides itself on its freshly prepared food and excellent service. The food is locally sourced where possible as Prego believes in small businesses supporting other small businesses in the local area. Extra to the exciting and varied menu there are specials available throughout the week. If you are looking for a venue for a celebration, meeting or family get together then Prego has a private dining room with its own bar and the team are happy to create bespoke packages to suit any occasion. The room accommodates between 12 and 26 people and has been used for meetings, christening parties, engagement celebrations, business dinners and family parties.

Visit www.pregorestaurants.com where you can view the menus and book a table or please call the restaurant on 01280 821205. To advertise call 07769 676573 or visit www.communitycontact.co.uk

Our Wedding Diary So how is only four months (four months!) until we get married!? We are finally getting round to the fun stuff! I mean it’s all supposed to be fun right?! To be honest it is hard to find the time to actually enjoy all the planning! As a bride to be I have realised you can get very carried away and every tiny detail starts to add up dramatically! I mean who would have thought that a wedding band would be double the price than a normal band that you would hire for the pub or a regular party!? However, we want our day to be just how we want it - and for us live music is a must. All of the bridesmaids have tried on their dresses and can you believe it, they are all happy with them! (well that is what they have told me anyway!). Our save the dates have all gone out all over the world – and guess what, my 86 year old Aunt Susan from Canada is making a special trip to England for our wedding! I am truly touched and honored and can’t wait for my mum to have all of her sisters at our wedding.

This month we will be getting all of our invitations out to all of our lovely

14

guests – designed by my very talented husband to be! Neil has been to try on his suit at Suitors in Buckingham, and next up we need to choose our wedding rings, find our flower girl’s their dresses and also help our mums get their outfits!

In July we have our Hen and Stag parties! How exciting! I can’t actually believe it is our turn! Being 30 I have been to many hen parties and for mine I will be going down to beautiful Devon with my favourite girls, to stay in a really cute country cottage called the Cider Press. A lot of it is a surprise as I have no idea what we will be doing whilst we are there, and I just want to say a BIG thank you to Sarah Kay and Stephanie Partridge who are organising the hen party for me (I have been told you guys are doing an outstanding job at organising it!). Neil will be going on his stag weekend with 20 of his favourite mates to endure a boys weekend of drinking, horse racing and partying! His Best Man Leo is doing an outstanding job, so a BIG thank you from me for making Neil feel special on his weekend of (well I don’t know what!) Just make sure you bring him home in one piece! So until the next time! Laura x

JUNE - JULY 2015

Looking after your pet during the warmer months When it’s hot outside, us humans make sure we’re cool, hydrated and protected against the rays of the sun, and it’s important to think about the same things when looking after a pet. Hotter months can be uncomfortable and dangerous for animals, so there are a few ways to make sure that your beloved pet is its usual happy self in hot weather. Hydration Make sure your pet has a continuous water supply that’s kept in the shade and refreshed multiple times a day. Good grooming Grooming your pet is important for their health and comfort, and making sure they’re well groomed during the summer will help them regulate their temperature. Speak to a groomer or vet to find out what‘s best for your pet. Pack the sun cream If your pet is light-skinned or doesn’t have much or any fur, make sure they’re protected from the sun with animal-friendly sun protection - your vet may recommend a suitable product. Pay particular attention to vulnerable areas such as their ears and nose. Get the hose out If your pet isn’t averse to a bit of water, they might enjoy being cooled down with a hose or sprinkler.

Stay shady If your animal is out in the sunshine, make sure there’s an easily accessible shady area for them to seek shelter under when the heat gets too much. Alternatively, keep them indoors in a well-ventilated, cool room. Limit exercise Take care when exercising your pet on warmer days. Adjust the frequency and duration of exercise with the temperature, and limit activity to the early morning or evening when the temperature’s cooler. Some canines are more prone to heatstroke than others - for example older dogs, larger dogs and long-haired ones. If you think your dog may be suffering heatstroke, make sure they’re in the shade and have access to water, then immediately ring a vet. Read more about travelling with pets in our guide. The Royal Society for the Protection of Animals (RSPCA) advises owners to look out for a number of symptoms: Heavy panting Profuse salivation Rapid pulse Very red gums/tongue Lethargy Lack of co-ordination Reluctance/inability to rise after collapsing Vomiting Diarrhoea Loss of consciousness

St Agnes

Cornwalls Hidden Gem

If you ever visit Cornwall, St Agnes is definitely worth a visit. You can find St Agnes on the north cost of Cornwall carved into a niche in the cliffs between St Ives and Newquay. As well as a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a World Heritage Site, St Agnes has a thriving and creative local community with a number of independent shops, stunning beaches, bars, pubs and restaurants. St Agnes has an extremely rich mining history, which has helped shape the beautiful landscape over the years. This is still evident today in the iconic mine ruins and harbour where ore was shipped and coal received. It’s therefore no surprise that the legendary Winston Graham based his original Poldark novels on areas in and around St Agnes. Most of his writing was written while the author lived in Perranporth. He had moved to Perranporth at the age of 17, just a few miles from St Agnes. In fact, part of the current 2015 BBC’s remake of Poldark was actually filmed on St Agnes Head. Another pastime linked heavily with the village is surfing. The area is generally regarded as one for the more experienced surfers, although there are some excellent surf schools in the area if you fancy taking to a board for the first time. The main beach at Trevaunance Cove is lifeguarded during the holiday season and St Agnes is also a base for the environmental pressure group, Surfers Against Sewage.

By Si Craze, St Agnes Throughout the year there are numerous events for visitors to enjoy. The community of St Agnes rarely need an excuse to party and annual events include the Victorian Fayre, Giant Bolster Festival, Bodysurfing Championships, Beach Dog Racing and Lifeboat Day to name a few. The epic carnival in August turns the village into one gigantic party with street parties and dancing into the night. The legendary Giant Bolster, the foolish giant outwitted by the fair maiden Saint Agnes, also makes an appearance, leading the procession across the Beacon and into the village.

Places to visit or things to do while in St Agnes include: Wheal Coates and St Agnes Head - An iconic mine shaft on the north coast that extends all the way down to the sea and enjoys spectacular views down the coast towards St Ives and beyond. While here, it’s worth walking the coastal path to the great little cove at Chapel Porth. Be sure to sample the café’s legendary ‘hedgehog’ ice creams, a concoction

In addition there’s the St Agnes Hotel in the heart of the village which is a great community pub with a beer garden and is popular with locals and visitors alike. Finally, The Railway Inn and Peterville Inn are two other great pubs with beer gardens and live music serving great ales.

As you can see, St Agnes has plenty to offer but also provides a perfect base to explore other parts of Cornwall being just 20 mins from St Ives and the city of Truro. Just one thing though. If you do visit, please keep it a secret. We don’t want everyone knowing about this hidden gem!

Green Beans and Radishes (serves 6) • 500g fine green beans, trimmed • 1 banana shallot, finely diced • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil • juice ½ lemon • 250g pack radishes, thinly sliced

• 1.2kg sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into biggish chunks • 1 tbsp olive oil For the dressing • 2 shallots (or half a small red onion), finely chopped • 4 spring onions, finely sliced • small bunch of chives, snipped into quarters or use mini ones • 5 tbsp sherry vinegar • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tbsp honey

Boil a large pan of water. Tip in the beans and cook for 4-5 mins until just tender. Meanwhile, mix the shallot, mustard, oil and lemon juice with a little salt and pepper. Drain the beans well, then toss with the radishes and dressing. Serve warm.

Courgette, Feta and Mint Salad (serves 4)

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Toss the sweet potato chunks with the olive oil and some seasoning, and spread on a baking parchment-lined baking sheet. Roast for 30 - 35 mins until tender and golden. Cool at room temperature.

• 2 courgettes • 100g bag rocket leaves • 200g pack feta cheese (or vegetarian alternative), crumbled • bunch mint, leaves picked

When just about cool whisk together all the dressing ingredients with a little more seasoning and gently toss through the potato chunks – use your hands to avoid breaking them up.

Peel the courgettes into long ribbons with a potato peeler. Arrange with the rocket on a large platter. Scatter over the feta and mint leaves, and drizzle on your favourite dressing.

Return the griddle pan to a high heat, add the marinated chicken and sear all over for 8 to 10 minutes, turning regularly. Transfer to a roasting tray, then pop in the hot oven for 45 minutes, or until cooked through. Meanwhile, cut the sweet potatoes into rough 2cm wedges. Spread the wedges out onto two large baking trays, then place in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until tender and crisp. To make the jalapeño salsa, drain and add the jalapeños to a food processor with a splash of the pickling juice. Tear in the coriander (stalks and all) and add a splash of extra virgin olive oil. IN YOUR GARDEN

Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day

As spring swiftly moves into summer, there are plenty of tasks to be done to get the best from your plot – whatever its size!

Stake tall or floppy plants. You buy special support systems from Garden Centres or simply use short bamboo canes and raffia to hold stems in place. Collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for irrigation. Keep the hoe moving through the borders to help control weeds. Remember the adage - one year’s seeds is seven years’ weeds. Catching weeds

before they have a chance to flower and set seed is essential. You can always spot treat the likes of Dandelions and Hairy Bittercress with Roundup Weedkiller Gel. Application couldn’t be easier; simply touch the weed and the gel adheres to the leaf so is perfect to use on weeds in flower beds, vegetable plots and other awkward places.

Plant out summer

seasonal plants aka bedding plants by the middle of June latest – all fear of late frosts should have now passed. Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside – a slightly sheltered location is usually the best option for baskets. Preventatively spray all roses with Roseclear Ultra to help discourage Blackspot, Mildew and

Check that there are no nesting birds before clipping hedges. Newly planted hedges need to be watered regularly to keep them growing well. Second and third year hedges would benefit from a feed to

34

Aphids from spoiling your display this year. Once the early flowering shrubs (such as Forsythia, Kerria, Philadelphus, Ribes and Weigela) have finished flowering then is the time to trim these back to help maintain a good shape as well as encourage better flowering next year. It would be beneficial to feed around the base of these plants to help the process.

help stimulate some new growth and to promote more structure. Apply Vitax Q4 (non-organic) or Blood, Fish & Bone fertiliser if you garden organically. A good handful along each 1m (3ft) run will be sufficient.

Remember to regularly mow lawns

to keep them in shape - removing ‘little and often’ is the key to a good quality sward. Continue cutting lawn edges with a half-moon edging iron to ensure they are neat. Ensure new lawns (either from turf or seed) do not dry out during hot weather, as turves will shrink and fail to knit together causing cracks and gaps

Apple (and sometimes

Pear) trees are likely to drop large numbers of excess fruit around now. This is known as the ‘June Drop’, and is nature’s way of thinning out the crop. Inspect fruit bushes and trees for pests and diseases, and treat as necessary. As new canes of Raspberries and Blackberries appear tie to support wires,

to appear. If persistent broad-leaved weeds, such as Dandelion, Plantain, Common Mouse-Ear and White Clover are still proving a nuisance then control them with an application of Verdone Extra. This highly effective lawn herbicide can be applied from April to September. Do follow the instructions carefully on the packaging for best results.

but remember to keep them away from last year’s growth as this will flower and fruit this summer. It is a good idea to drape netting over soft fruit bushes such as currants, as well as Strawberries which are either growing in rows or containers, to prevent birds, especially cheeky Blackbirds, from stripping unprotected plants of their fruit.

Hellebores can

develop hellebore leaf spot on old leaves. Use Bayer Garden Systhane Fungus Fighter or Fungus Clear. Inspect Lilies for the Scarlet Lily Beetle (pictured) whose larvae can strip plants in days. Continue to protect Lilies, Delphiniums, Hostas and other susceptible plants from Slugs and Snails. Regularly inspect plants, and also the structures

of the greenhouse and conservatory, for glasshouse Red Spider Mite, Whitefly, Thrips and other pests. Careful attention to the undersides of the leaves and to each plant in turn, can spot early infestations that would otherwise be missed. Control with approved insecticides and biological controls, and hang yellow sticky traps to help monitor numbers of flying pests.

Healthy BBQ Thinking BBQ season is upon us (if we can

just get rid of this rain) and a lot of us will be proudly dusting off our bbq’s and putting our cooking skills to the test in front of friends and family. However, wait a minute! What do you do if you are on a diet?! Never fear, depending on the type of diet you are following you can still enjoy your BBQ and watch your weight. Low carb diets – These have been around for years. The idea behind the low carb diets is to make sure your carbohydrate intake doesn’t go above 80g per day. So ideally, slimmers will be eating meat, fish, leafy green vegetables, eggs etc. Low carb diets work extremely well as your body converts your fat stores into energy by going into ketosis. Many a celeb endorse diets such as these because you can lose weight quite quickly and providing you follow diets like this properly, they are very safe. Calorie controlled diets – The science behind these diets is simple really. In order to lose 1lb, we need to use 3500 calories more than our bodies need for nutritional purposes. So lets say you want to lose 7lbs, then you simply need to use 24,500 calories. That’s a scary figure isn’t it? well no not really. You can make simple changes to your diet and before you know it, you are using calories and shedding those unwanted lbs. Of course there’s so many diets

38

available to us slimmers however, we will concentrate on these 2 diets for our BBQ special. Fitting your low carb diet in with your BBQ is so simple. Just stay away from those pesky potato salads, breads, pastas and certain glazes and sauces and you’ll be great as a lot of slimmers on low carb diets usually turn to meats anyway. So if you fancy a burger then go for it. You can even have a slice of cheese on top but just stay away from that bun. However, slimmers need to realise that everything is ok in moderation. There’s been a bit of controversy with certain diets when it comes to the amount of meat some slimmers were consuming. Eating too much meat can obviously cause indigestion, constipation, heartburn and can also raise our cholesterol levels. If you are a slimmer who prefers to simply count your calories. Then you aren’t limited by the foods you can consume. However, you would need to be aware of portion sizes and calories contained within foods. For example. Did you know a simple BBQ can add up to about 3000 calories? Shocking really isn’t it? A lot of us feel compelled by the ‘must put and eat everything on our plate syndrome’ when it comes to bbq’s and buffets and those unwanted calories easily add up. Lets look at some facts A simple beef burger (no bun, sauce or cheese) 304 calories! Chicken drumstick 305 calories

Please mention Community Contact when responding to adverts

JUNE - JULY 2015

Pasta salad – an average of 278 calories (depending on portion size) Pork sausage 151 calories Chicken skewer 143 calories Potato salad 67 calories And of course no BBQ would be complete without something to wash it down with. So if you fancy that can of beer you can easily add 220 calories on top of that. Your refreshing glass of Pimms can add 180 calories. A glass of coke can add 105 calories and your Rose about 90 calories. So this summer, enjoy your BBQ but watch those hidden calories and beware of your eat everything on your plate syndrome. at home….

No. 1 Well Street, Buckingham, MK18 1EW Tel: 01280 821452 Email: hello@athomebucks.co.uk at home…. Buckingham was opened in April 2009 by sisters Sarah and Jenny. It hadn’t been a long planned dream, it was quite by chance. One day as they were walking in Well Street they saw a notice in a shop window ‘For Rent’. They met the Landlord and had a look around. They decided to open a shop selling things they loved and after calling on family and friends to help fit out the shop they opened their doors four months later selling a range of gifts, textiles, ceramics and jewellery downstairs and a Dress Agency upstairs. In September 2011 they moved to their current location at No.1 Well Street where they now have a good local following and

are also known further afield having won Best Gift Shop in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire 2014 and just come runner up in Best Interiors Store in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire 2015 (Muddy Stilettos Awards). They sell a wide range of accessories to help make your house a home and if you’re looking for a treat for yourself the Hultquist Jewellery and Neom range of Candles and Bath & Body products are very popular. Take a look at their website www. athomebucks.co.uk but not everything is included there so it’s well worth a visit to soak up the atmosphere and be inspired!

A remarkable suite of medieval meadows – untouched by modern farming and full of wildlife. Meadow Farm is a relic of ancient ridge and furrow farming techniques, abundant in the wild flowers we once took for granted. Situated within the Upper River Ray Living Landscape, Meadow Farm is a 28-hectare site by the River Ray on the Oxon-Bucks border, surrounded by wide blackthorn hedges and home to whitethroats and yellowhammers. A substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has allowed us to start an exciting 3-year conservation and community engagement project.

INTERESTING Hand Signed Edition By Steve Davis Title: Steve Davis, Interesting Author: Steve Davis Format: Hardback ISBN: 9780091958640 Price: £20 Available from Cole’s Books, Bicester Steve Davis was just a rookie from Plumstead, south London, learning how to play from an old book his snooker-obsessed father had given him, when an encounter with Barry Hearn changed his life forever. With his backing, Steve began touring the country in a clapped-out car as an amateur. Challenging established professionals and winning titles, supported by his loyal following the Romford Roar, it wasn’t long before he progressed to the world’s stage. By the eighties, Steve had helped transform a previously shady sport into a national obsession. He and a cast of legends such as Ray Reardon, Dennis Taylor and Alex Higgins, with other young guns like Jimmy White, were doing silent battle in front of huge audiences. Tens of millions of viewers would witness the nail-biting conclusions of his world championship finals; this was snooker’s golden era. Steve Davis has won more professional titles in the sport than any other player, including a huge total of 28 ranking events and 53 non-ranking. He was the No.1 player in the eighties, and his most significant wins include six world championships and three Masters. In 1988, Steve was made an MBE and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and in 2001 he was awarded an OBE. He also picked up his ironic nickname ‘Interesting’ and a puppet from the satirical series Spitting Image. Remaining a household name, he has appeared on a number of popular British TV shows, including I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2013. Interesting lays it all bare: what it was like to win in those pressure-cooker situations; how to cope at the top, when everyone wants you to lose; and how you deal with the moment when a man comes along who is finally better than you.

The Mini Convertible

“Because it’s great to drive and very desirable, the MINI Convertible offers a near perfect way to enjoy the sun.” For drivers who put the emphasis on style and fun over practicality and ultimate comfort, the MINI Convertible is an excellent choice. It doesn’t offer the same amount of space as bigger rivals like the VW Golf Convertible and Audi A3 Convertible, or the quirky roof of the Fiat 500C, but it blends MINI’s desirability with an excellent range of engines, plus handling that’s almost as sharp as the hatchback’s. Now, you can even buy it with a diesel engine for lower running costs. The appeal of the MINI is pretty universal and the key to its success has been maintaining certain key traits across the whole range. The MINI Convertible carries over the key characteristics that make the hatchback so satisfying to own – it’s distinctive and good to look at, plus it’s great fun to drive, while adding the extra enjoyment of open-top, wind-in-your-hair motoring. Full review can be found on www.carbuyer.co.uk

A brief overview...

+ Pros

MPG, running costs & CO2 Remarkably economical, with prepaid servicing softening the initial high price

- Cons

Engines, drive & performance Great handling and strong performance make the MINI fun to drive Interior & comfort The wind makes its presence felt with the roof both up and down Practicality & boot space Tiny boot and impractical rear seats do the MINI Convertible no favours Reliability & safety Owners aren’t very happy, but BMW quality means it should be reliable
