What a discovery the Redbarn Retreat is! Located in the tiny countryside village of Fulwell, just off the road between Buckingham and Brackley, it is the perfect hideaway. It’s a place of relaxation, tranquility and pure indulgence! Owner, Lisa Lawes, first set up the barn back in 2014. Her passion for health and wellbeing inspired her to create a sanctuary for people to escape and relax with a wide range of treatments that can be suited to everyone. Now with five different treatment rooms, their beauty therapists perform treatments with pure, safe and beneficial products that are vegan approved. Their treatment range includes; Indian head massage, manicures, Bio Lift Facials, IPL hair removal, pregnancy treatments and much more! I was very fortunate and got to try out a few of the wonderful treatments available at Redbarn Retreat, one of which being the Lava Shell Massage!
Lava Shell Massage
Lava Shell Massage is a type of heat treatment that uses warm Tiger-striped clam shells as a massage tool. The heat is produced by inserting a ‘lava gel sachet’ and ‘activator liquid’ into the shell. For me, as a new mum with a bad back, this massage was a dream. The heat from the Lava Shells relaxes and smooth’s away knots. The shells also give off calcium ions which, when heated, transfers to your skin during the massage. Calcium can help to firm and regenerate the skin – bonus! I was also lucky enough to have one of Red Barn’s delicious facials, which left my skin feeling silky smooth, and a 30-minute natural health assessment with Jo. So not only do Redbarn Retreat offer your usual beauty treatments, they also offer so much more. Lisa is really focused on natural health, wellbeing and mindfulness too. The Redbarn Retreat really does have it all. Why not go and see for yourself?

Today, Not Tomorrow.... Today I want to introduce you to New Year Resolution’s illegitimate cousin, the ‘September Sudden-Rush’. We’re all familiar with the trend of getting fit in line with New Year Resolutions. But there is a second peak influx of interest in my industry and we’re about to head into the thick of it. The kids have gone back to school, your day-to-day schedule is starting to re-align and settle down. At which point you’re noticing you’ve put on the “Summer 7” after enjoying the season of beer, BBQ and ice cream. No big deal, “I’ll get back on it” you say. Which is great, but here lies the booby trap. It’s not your fault, it’s ours, as in, the fitness and weight loss industry. You see, we know from a psychological perspective that you’re not looking at this kickstart as a longterm thing. Like you might do at New Year. People are soon going to be mentioning work Christmas parties around the office (if they’re not already), and the annual gatherings of more distant family and in-law’s is fast approaching. Which leaves you susceptible to jumping at more over-zealous programs and potions than usual. I don’t want to point fingers at any approach in particular, what I would suggest instead is to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Are you desperate to achieve “X” before Christmas? Or is it more a case of wanting to make
a long-term improvement in your health, fitness and physique for good? What needs to happen is a general bucking of the trend of being on and off the wagon in large bursts of each. Instead by being conistent year round, 2 weeks away in August, and the winter festive period don’t impact things as much as they usually would. As people, we’re great at justifying our reasons not to do something. The author Steven Pressfield in his book The War of Art calls this process “The Resistance”, he says “We don’t tell ourselves, ‘I’m never going to write my symphony.’ Instead we say, ‘ I’m going to write my symphony; I’m just going to start tomorrow.’” Does this sound familiar to how so many of us approach training and nutrition? If you’re interested in making a real shift in your training and nutrition, you’d love our 14-Day Trial. You can experience our full service in all it’s glory, for a fraction of the price. Not only that, but we’re giving away one full trial during October/November. Enquire today, not tomorrow… All the best, Rich. info@intent2improve.com www.intent2improve.com

IN YOUR GARDEN
Topical advice from Buckingham Garden Centre’s, Chris Day
As the shadows extend and the days shorten and become cooler, there’s plenty to plan for across the whole garden, from planting glorious bulbs for spring colour to establishing new plants for all year-round interest.
C
OLOURFUL PROSPECTS Sow Sweet Peas in a cold frame or an unheated greenhouse to overwinter so allowing planting outdoors in March or April to produce early blooms. For colourful displays indoors during Christmas and the New Year plant containers with prepared Hyacinth bulbs early in the month, and towards the middle of October plant Narcissus. Plant up winter hanging baskets and containers using Myosotis (Forget-me-nots), Pansy, Polyanthus, Primrose, Viola (pictured with ‘Miracle’ Cyclamen, Heuchera, Ornamental Kale and Cabbage with Ivy), dwarf Wallflowers and spring flowering bulbs. Pot Chrysanthemums should be kept moist and remember to deadhead regularly as this will keep the flowers coming. Remove Cyclamen leaves that are yellowing along with faded flowers by carefully pulling them from the corm. However, to prevent leaves from turning yellow keep in a cool, light place. Plants that flower over winter must continue to be watered, but remember to cut down on the watering for other subjects.
L
AWNS In milder areas final sowings of grass seed can be made early in October, provided soil and weather conditions are suitable. There are plenty of grass mix options – do ask for advice if you are unsure which seed mixture is best for your situation. Apply an autumn fertiliser to established lawns. If moss is a problem, choose a combined fertiliser and mosskiller when feeding the lawn. Again, if weeds are a problem in an established lawn opt for a combined weed, feed and mosskiller such as Evergreen Complete 4-in-1. Growth is now slowing down and the final mowing should be made shortly. If the weather continues mild you can offset this by simply raising the mower blades. Remove any leaves that have fallen onto the lawn and add them (in small quantities only) to the compost heap. If you have lots of trees and leaves it might be worth composting the leaves separately in order to produce your own leafmould, which makes an excellent soil conditioner for the garden.
L
IFT AND PROTECT If at all possible any tender perennials, such as Fuchsias, which are in containers should be moved into a frostfree greenhouse or shed for the winter. Also at this time, similar types of plants such as Dahlias (pictured), Cannas and Pelargonium that have been grown in borders should be very carefully lifted, potted up using a gritty potting compost and placed where they will be protected from the cold. Remember to trim back any leggy or tall top growth that may have been left as this will reduce any potential die back problems through the winter.

OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2017
G
ROW YOUR OWN Plant Garlic bulbs using a suitable variety such as ‘Elephant’, ‘French Cristo’, ‘French Germidour’ and ‘French Thermidrome’ as well as Onion varieties ‘Electric’, ‘Radar’ and ‘Red Winter’ which can be planted during October and November. Towards the end of October, in sheltered areas make sowings of Broad Beans such as the very hardy ‘Aquadulce Claudia’. If you are planning to grow the often recommended ‘The Sutton’, a particularly short growing variety, this benefits from the protection of cloches. Lift and store root crops such as Carrots, Beetroot and Potatoes. Cut down Asparagus foliage once it has turned yellow to near ground level i.e. the stumps should be 3-5cm (1-2inches) above the surface. Crowns of Globe Artichoke should be protected from frost by wrapping straw around the base of the plants. For an early variety of Mange Tout Pea, the variety ‘Oregon Sugar Pod’ can be sown under cloches now. For a continuous supply of lettuce crops during winter plant varieties such as ‘Winter Gem’, for growing in pots or cropping bags and then grow on in a frost-free greenhouse. Protect outside crops with Enviromesh, which is very popular with vegetable enthusiasts as this acts as a barrier to garden pests as well as providing some useful frost protection. Potted up herbs such as Parsley, Sage, Mint and Thyme should be brought indoors for the winter to extend cropping. Overcrowded clumps of Chives will benefit from being lifted and divided. As this is such a useful herb for garnishes and flavouring all year round why not grow small clumps in pots on the kitchen window sill?
F
RUIT PICKINGS October is usually a great month for preparing the ground for planting soft fruit. Select a well-drained, sunny position that is not prone to late frosts. Dig over the area incorporating well-rotted farm-yard manure or garden compost removing all perennial weed roots. Erect support structures - poles, posts and wires - for cane fruits such as Raspberries, Blackberries, and hybrids such as Loganberry, Boysenberry, and Tayberry. New stocks of bare root Raspberry canes will be arriving in October from our Scottish grower, so plan now for the varieties you wish to establish for next season. Make sure all the stems for next summer’s crop are securely tied in (pictured). Ripe apples should be picked and, depending on the variety, either be eaten or stored in a cool, dry place until ready. Grease bands and barrier glue can be wrapped around or applied to fruit trees at about 45cm (18in) above soil level to help protect them from various winter moths. It is important to stop these wingless females from climbing the tree and laying their eggs.

New Brands at Beautifully Different! Well it’s been a whole year since we opened our second store in the pretty market town of Brackley, and what a year it’s been! Our trademark style of easy wear clothing and accessories has gone down a storm, and we have gorgeous new Autumn/Winter colours and textures in store now. We love hearing what our customers would like to see in our stores, and because of that we are very excited to announce the arrival of some fabulous new brands this season to perfectly complement our trademark easywear style! Here are just a few of the stars in the new lineup: First up is the Danish label Fransa, feminine, sized clothing, stylish and affordable. Next is the chic Dutch label Yest, we’ll be stocking their fabulously comfortable shapewear jeans as well as some key Autumn pieces. Then we have the famous Robell trousers from Germany, once you find your style in this brand, you’ll be wanting them in every colour! We’ve been a Robell stockist for a while now, so we know many of you will be pleased to hear we now stock some styles in a short length, made exclusively for the UK! For your feet, we have the amazingly comfortable, wildly practical (but utterly gorgeous) UK based Butterfly Twists, these stylish ballerina pumps are sturdy enough for daily wear, but also foldable so you can pop them in your bag when you need to take off those heels! Coupled with a range of ankle and full length boots from another British British Brand, Brakeburn, we pretty much have you covered from head to toe here at Beautifully Different. We are famous for our rather fabulous customer service, and our experienced team are happy to advise you on colour and style. We all have one or two nifty tricks up our sleeve to help you look your best whatever your shape or size, whether it’s our gorgeous clothing or our stunning accessories. We have new stock in every week, so why not pop in and see us. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook.com/beautifullydifferent, Twitter @bdiffwinslow or Instagram beautifullydifferentboutique, for details of our latest events, competitions and promotions, and we look forward to seeing you in the shops soon! Love Kim, Liz and the Team x

Kevin
BY ROB BIDDULPH Format: Hardback 1st Edition ISBN: 9780008207410 Price: £12.99 Hand Signed by Rob Biddulph Available from Cole’s Books, Bicester
The glorious new picture book from the bestselling, award-winning author of Blown Away and GRRRRR!, all about one boy, one Kevin, and one very special friendship… Uh-oh Sid Gibbons is in trouble again! Time to think fast. When Sid makes yet another mess, and his mum is at the end of her patience, Sid does what every quick-thinking kid would do he blames it on his big, furry, vanillaand-pink friend Kevin! And while it seemed like a good idea at the time, Sid gets an unexpected surprise when he finds out that Kevin and his world might not be so imaginary after all and while his friend might be make-believe, his feelings are very real. A beautifully illustrated rhyming tale of friendship, kindness and stepping up, from a rare picture book talent. The perfect story for any child, from age three and up.

Silence your inner critic
I know the feeling – that chocolate bar is calling you from the cupboard, those crisps just accidentally fell into your mouth somehow. Before you know it, those good intentions are out the window and running down the street but don’t worry you really aren’t alone. A recent study has shown that 98% of us has had a lapse when on a diet and out of that percentage, 4 out of 5 of those then beat themselves up because of it. Now. Some of us need a good old talking to, internal wake up call to really get ourselves going again BUT by being critical towards yourself, you could be setting yourself up for a fall. We all have an inner critic (you know that voice that we always seem to notice when it’s telling us what we did wrong or what we don’t like about ourselves) And silencing that inner critic can take time and be hard work. If you learn to silence that inner critic, you can start to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start again for a more successful weight loss adventure! Here’s how… • Mistakes happen – I can guarantee you that no-one is perfect ( not even these super ‘eat clean’ stars you see in magazines or on tv). We are all human and sometimes we need to remember that. • Today is a fresh start – If you went off plan yesterday, draw a line under it. You can’t change what has happened BUT you can change how you feel about it. Use it as a guideline for your future weight loss.
62
• Look for motivation – Motivation can come in many forms. From that dress you want to get into, to an event that’s coming up. Pop that dress somewhere prominent where you’ll be reminded about it, write yourself notes and pop them in the cupboards and fridge to spur yourself on • It’s only temporary – When we are on a diet, we suddenly remind ourselves of the foods we are dismissing and seem to want them even more! Remember that this weight loss period won’t last forever and it’s that instant gratification that food gave us that got us here in the first place. • 3 questions. If you’re struggling and thinking about lapsing, ask yourself the following: WHY? - Why do I want this food? HOW? How will I feel after I eat it? WHAT? What can I have that will support my weight loss instead? • Support – I always know when people are struggling with their weight loss as instead of reaching out, they go quiet and withdraw from all support. That behaviour usually ends up with them falling completely off the wagon until they’re ready again. Instead of repeating that same old cycle, why not reach out instead. Ask for help, there’s some amazing weight loss forums out there (including our supportive facebook group). Don’t be afraid to say ‘hey I’m struggling here’. No doubt there’ll be someone else in the same position as you and you never know when you may make a great diet buddy. Contact Us - 01280 816933 wecare@thesmldiet.co.uk | www.thesmldiet.com
