GREAT EXPECTATIONS AFRICA READY TO BE THE PERFECT HOSTS By Rodney Hinds HE STUNNING rise of African football reaches a peak on Friday, June 11. It is the day that South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena leads his team out against Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg. While the match will have the world's attention the significance is in the fact that an

African nation is hosting the greatest football show on earth for the very first time. There have been cynics and doubters ever since South Africa landed the big prize. But despite that and the constant reference to the African nation's backdrop of violence that sits uncomfortably with some, the show will go on. African footballers have grown in importance as each year has gone. Their growing status is now underpinned by the fact that Africa now hosts arguably the greatest sporting occasion on the planet. I have no doubt that it will be a spectacle both on and off the field. The vuvuzela, the plastic trumpet native to South Africa, is set to take centre stage - and make a lot of noise! When the first match kicks

off the politicians and doom merchants will hopefully be silenced and it is over to the players. It would help if the hosts enjoy an extended run. Their opening group should hold no fears. Mokoena, who endured agony and ecstasy at club side Portsmouth, has enough quality in his team to overcome the Mexicans, Uruguayans and ageing French in the first round. Nigeria will look to get three points on the board as quickly as possible, despite their opener being a match up against Lionel Messi's Argentina. If the Nigerians, who have had a woeful World Cup buildup, can overcome Argentina first up they could build confidence and momentum. Ghana did look to have a good case of being the best

African bet. However, the loss of talisman Michael Essien to injury will cost them. Unknown Serbia, hardworking Australia and experienced Germany stand in their way. They will now need the likes of captain Stephen Appiah and

group favourites, Netherlands. If the Ivory Coast can get their act together early they have the talent to leave an indelible mark on the tournament. As ever there will be a weight of expectancy on cap-

‘Football fever takes over for the next month’’ Champions League winner Sulley Muntari to be at their best. But they are in with a shout of reaching the round of the last 16, which could mean a possible clash with England. Cameroon will doubtless rely on the goals and savvy of Samuel Eto'o in Group E. But over the years the Africans have gone backwards so a major effort will be required to get to the second phase with

tain and goal poacher Didier Drogba. But other experienced players such as Chelsea team mate Saloman Kalou, Seville's Didier Zokora and the Toure brothers will need to be firing if they are to escape Group G which also contains Portugal and Brazil, both of whom have the ability to get to the business end of the World Cup. Sadly, Algeria will have their work cut out to get any Group

C points on the board. Brazil and Spain will start as favourites come June 11 and for obvious reasons. Brazil are pass masters, with five World Cup wins under their belt, while Spain have at last got the monkey off their back by being crowned European champions in 2008. They both have great players with big match experience and that will be key in order to reach the final on July 11. And of course there's England, one of my tips to lift the coveted prize even if it's just to rid ourselves of the black and white images of the 1966 triumph! Make no mistake Wayne Rooney will be pivotal. If he can find something like his Manchester United form and get support, yes, England can do it. Other key players will be captain Rio Ferdinand and wouldn't it be great if a black captain lifted the prize for England in the Motherland? The stylish contrtibution of Ledley King, in defence or midfield, will be important as will the contributions of Frank Lampard and the much maligned Ashley Cole who during the tournament will become the most capped black player for England. Where England fall down, for me, is in goal and should Rooney blow a gasket or succumb to injury. Get ready to sweat as football fever takes over for the next month. It will be dramatic, exciting and no doubt a memorable penalty shoot out or two will be thrown in along the way. While I have a hankering for England we would discount Brazil and Argentina at our peril.

ICONIC PLAYER: Lucas Radebe The current SA side could do with the likes of Radebe, a calm influence on and off the field. Known as ‘The Chief’, Radebe earned 70 international caps between 1992 -2003. The centre-half's career took off after he joined high-flying Leeds United in 1994. He was vital to the west Yorkshire during their glory days under manager David O’Leary.

Pienaar has the ability to ensure that the h o s t s really enjoy their own World Cup party. The gifted Everton player has quick feet and an even quicker brain. If he is on song he is likely to create a hatful of chances for the Bafana Bafana forwards.

Verdict:

NICKNAME: Bafana Bafana Population: 49,320,000 Capital: Pretoria

STAR PLAYER: Steven Pienaar

The tournament can only benefit if the hosts can get to the business end of the month long event. They should be able to negotiate the opening phase but then could possibly face Argentina in the second round. They will need all of their support if they come up against Lionel Messi & Co. Definitely in with a chance of reaching the round of the last sixteen.

STAR PLAYER: Idriss Carlos Kameni

A 42-year-old Milla scored against Russia in the 1994 World Cup to become the tournament’s oldest goalscorer as well as oldest player. Remembered for celebrating his goals by dancing next to the corner flag, the striker was pivotal to a Cameroon side that reached the quarter-finals of Italia '90.

COACH: Paul Le Guen

Arguably the best black goalkeeper in the world, Kameni has been the Indomitable Lions’ firstchoice shot-stopper since he was a teenager. Now a seasoned La Liga veteran for Espanyol, the 26year-old will literally have his hands full trying to prevent goals leaking through Cameroon's fragile defence. He is big and brave and if he is on song he could help his country to the second round at least. His experience will be crucial.

Verdict: Cameroon struggled in qualifying until the arrival of former Rangers manager Paul Le Guen. Escaping from Group E is not impossible, but it will not be easy. Expect Holland to comfortably top Group E - should they play to their potential - with Denmark and Cameroon battling for second place. Beyond that a second round elimination looks likely for a team that have an over reliance on Eto’o’s goals and experience.

His goals helped Nigeria to win the African Cup of Nations for a second time in 1994. He scored a remarkable 90 goals for Vitoria Setubal of Portugal in 108 games! African Footballer of the Year three years on the spin from 1991, Pele graced the Italian, German and French leagues scoring a hatful of goals in each. He scored scored 33 goals in 67 appearances for Ghana. The term legend is often used in football; Abedi is certainly worthy of the word.

Population: 18,412,247 Capital: Accra

I've got a funny feeling we may be talking more about the goalkeeper than anything else especially as he is set to hang up his gloves at the end of the tournament! But because no one wants to hear about the goalie (sad but true) the one to watch is most likely to be Kwadwo Asamoah. After his first full season in Serie A, following many sensational performances for Udinese, he has been linked with Juventus and his valuation has been set at 30 million euros by Udinese.

Verdict: Ghana have a good team but I fear defending maybe where they let themselves down. The loss of key man Michael Essien is massive. Concentration is one of the biggest assets a team can have come World Cup time, you can lose the game in a moment. Looking at their defenders, I'm not filled with the greatest hope that they can keep the more organized teams at bay.

ENGLAND

STAR PLAYER: Wayne Rooney Rooney has the touch and awareness to change a game with a moment of brilliance. Comfortable as both marksman and provider, the 24-year-old has blossomed into the complete front man. England's aspirations weigh heavily on his shoulders and Capello must hope Rooney can complete his first fullyfit major tournament. But injury blighted the end of his 2009-10 campaign and all of England hope that he has fully recovered.

Verdict: Doubts remain about England's ability to string together victories over the bigger nations, but if they win Group C they are likely to avoid the big boys until the semi-finals. Progress to the last four is by no means a given but it is a serious aim for Capello's men.

England's only World Cup-winning captain earned 108 caps and lead England to 1966 glory at only 24. The West Ham centre-back cemented his reputation as an adroit reader of the game when he cleanly dispossessed the galloping Jairzinho when England met Brazil at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

The Motherland welcomes Lineker & Co. By Karyn Bascombe OUTH AFRICA is ready for the influx of the world's media and last month BBC Sport announced its squad who will provide extensive coverage of the 2010 World Cup across TV, radio and online. The Lipstick Opinion on Sport took up the invite to the BBC's unveiling of their squad members at the White City studios in west London. The line-up is lead by Mr Match of the Day, presenter and former England captain Gary Lineker, who like a fine

Lineker had this to say on England manager Fabio Capello. “Fabio Cappello has made a positive impact both on and off the pitch in terms of discipline within the squad.” Also likely to make an impact on the players is South Africa's altitude. “For English players this is a real issue, if you're from South America and some of the other continents you'll be used to playing in such a high temperature but if we can at least play a proper high tempo game it will give us some sort

Co-commentator Mark Bright will be part of the dream team that gives us news and reports from around South Africa, supplying a real taste of the rich history and culture of the nation. The BBC aims to capture the impact of the tournament on the people of South Africa. We can expect in-depth coverage at the highest level

ICONIC PLAYER & RECORD GOALS: Pele The dream will become reality when his nation take to the South African pitch in their first game against South Korea. Arguably the greatest player of all time, Pele - 77 goals for his country -will be beaming with pride at the sight of the Motherland playing host to the greatest football tournament on the planet.

STAR PLAYER: Elano NICKNAME: A S e le ç ã o ,

Population: 185 million Capital city: Brasília

This question isn't usually as tough where Brazil are concerned, the star is usually obvious, not so this year. I feel after a subdued season Kaka will struggle to illuminate proceedings. Elano however, (remember him?) will be the guy to watch. He's found his confidence again out in Turkey and has always had the mark of quality.

Verdict: Can anyone remember a World Cup where Brazil couldn't win it? Blessed with supreme talent and confidence this year’s tournament will be no different. They don't start as favourites but semi-finals is a must. If they make it to that point, it's theirs for the taking. The lack of an in-form star may just galvanise their collective efforts.

The Chelsea striker was again prolific for the Blues this season as they crusied to a historic Double. The big man will be looking to continue his club form for his country this summer. Able to create something out of nothing, his presence is a nuisance for defenders. He has 42 goals for the Elephants.

Verdict: Having once again been drawn in the 'Group of Death' Ivory Coast will have gained heart from their last World Cup campaign in 2006.
