Behold your name Africa rises Learn our stories, travel far. We give you vision and wisdom. Heart to persevere when nobody listens. Patience to hear and persevere. Faith when you think all is Iost. Ayan de first’s drumbeat vibrated around the village, down the river through the towns, overseas, declaring: “Be assured, fearless, resourceful, inwardly confident.” Africa rises Restful, inventive, spirited, exuberant, strong. 10 Things I love about Africa By Dionne Grant
D
J ABRANTEE (right) never misses an opportunity to promote his Ghanaian roots. Whether he’s doing that via his popular Afrobeats show on London-based radio station Capital XTRA or at his annual Independence Day celebration, he’s proud of where he comes from. Here, he lists some of his favourite things. IT FEELS LIKE HOME: It’s one of the places on earth that feels like home. It may not be easy to live in Africa, but Africa is one of the richest continents in the world. It’s rich in tradition, natural resources, agriculture, heritage, culture and values. THE PEOPLE: I love the people. I believe we are the most friendly, down to earth and respectful people on earth. The respect is part of our traditional and religious values which is to simply love everyone and respect our elders which is demonstrated in how we greet, talk and address anyone older than us. THE WEATHER: I love the warm temperatures and weather in Africa especially during the summer season. Bright weather always does something positive for the mind and soul. It is said that sunny climate equates to a sunny disposition so the weather !"#$%&#'!(%)*##+#,-'."/ THE FOOD: I love the richness +'$#0#+1-.2"#-3#1+2!-."#432!5+'# cuisine, which vary in how it is 6+$%7#432!5+'#3--$#!"#&#))!'89#(+"(*# and very spicy. THE MUSIC: The music is fun, vibrant and very sweet. Irrespective of the different languages spoken in some of the songs, the beats are infectious and transcends many cultures and disciplines.

Africa Rises Paintings to remember from Tonderai Murzah
A
FRICA RISES is a specially commissioned painting by artist Tonderai Murzah to mark the publication of this supplement. Take a close look at this picture. It contains symbols of African heritage – the mask, cowrie shells (once a form of currency) and textiles. Although Tonderai, who runs his own company called Tonderai Arts, studied graphic design at college, he wanted to make a living painting images inspired by his African British heritage. A chance meeting with a fellow artist working at a south-east London art gallery led to an exhibition in 2010, followed by the launch of a card range called Gèlè seasons featuring the famed headwraps in 2011. Self-taught, his work has been featured by the national mental health charity Time to Change, and the BBC. He also runs art workshops for young people. Tonderai, whose name means ‘to remember’ in Shona, says: “I didn’t really see myself in art and !"#$%&&'"(%)*$+"*,-)./"*,%*"#$0$1*$+"*,$" whole of me from Africa to Britain. I knew about the Queen, The Tate, the British Museum but nothing in-depth about African art or artists back then.” As well as marking the publication of this supplement, the Africa Rises paintings are also aimed at celebrating independence in six African countries including Nigeria, Zambia and Lesotho. The artist says: “After learning more about our history before slavery and colonialism, the desire to express our beauty and deep culture has been a driving force. I want to remind everyone where we have come from and the things we have given to the world.” Look out for more from this talented artist including the launch of a new series of cards.

FOOD OFFERINGS Zoe Adjonyoh is the owner of Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen, a pop-up restaraunt that is putting Ghanaian food on the UK and German map. Where does your interest in Ghanaian food stem from? My father is from Accra. I learnt to cook and know Ghanaian ingredients growing up through the strange and wonderful ingredients he would bring home. Since that introduction, Ghanaian food has been a means through which I can connect with that side of my heritage and culture taking me back to Ghana to collect new recipes and meet family I had not had the opportunity to form relationships with growing up in London Why take Ghanaian food to Berlin? To share it! I spent a summer living in Berlin. An opportunity presented itself to do a supper club at a friend’s apartment after meeting and telling people what I did back in London. A guest at
Is the ‘world’ ready for African food? Absolutely. Food culture has exploded so much in this country and across Europe. There’s an appetite for new world cuisine that’s clearly visible in the breadth and variety of high-standard international street food. The continent of Africa has not been fully represented or explored in this way before. Africa is rising in every way imaginable: economics, fashion, music and food. They are all components of a continent ready to share its rich culture. I believe there’s an African food revolution coming very soon! What are your most popular dishes? Hands down, the classics - red red (bean stew), kelewele (plantain), jollof (rice), Nkatenkwan (groundnut stew).
SPICE RULES
For 25 years, Papa Joseph Gomez was the personal head chef for the Zambian President Sir Dawda Jawara. With such pedigree, it is not surprising his sons, Farra and Lawrence, a chef at The Ivy, have established a food business. Papa Spice produces a range of gourmet sauces and herb mixes intended to add cordon bleu oomph to Afro-Brit™ food. They launched in April 2013 at the Natural and Organic Food Show receiving runner up for Best New Natural Food Product. They are BBC Good Food Show Champions London. Catch Papa Spice at their pop up shop in Hoxton, London from October 6 to 12.

THE BROTHERS ON GAMBIAN FOOD
“The secret of Gambian food is in the seasoning. Cooks tend to use lots of lemons, scotch bonnet peppers and onions”, says Lawrence. “Benachin, meaning one pot in Wollof, a language spoken in Gambia and Senegal, is commonly referred to as Jollof rice and is widely used in most African countries. It originates from Gambia and Senegal,” says Farra.

Heritage in the Cherish collection
frican fashion is in vogue, thanks in part to African Fashion weeks across the globe, social media, the musicals Feast and Fela! and a desire by young British Africans to embrace their heritage. It is a trend that has led to visibility in high street stores and stylish boutiques. Nat Disu reports. Kosibah Creative Director Yemi Osunkoya launched the Cherish collection of gowns to acclaim in London and New York in 2013. Crafted from Aso Oke, a traditional hand crafted fabric from Nigeria used for weddings and special occasions, the !"#$%&'()*+,-.'#/*,'0121%')$.'3"4)2',-).5/-+-%'64"('72"4)jini, are an elegant blend of Africa meeting the West. Some of the designs are 1940s inspired glamour, some have elements of Victoriana, modernized, of course. Another designer, Clariscia Gill has introduced the Gelina collection, which incorporates the art of wrapping based on the Gèlè concept. The Gelina blouse, based on the traditional blouse and skirt launched at the Gèlè Tea event last year in London achieved global popularity. African governments warned to be ‘vigilant’ over progress on prosperity By Natricia Duncan
A
FRICAN LEADERS have been warned “to remain vigilant” after an annual chart assessing governance on the continent revealed a decline in rule of law and economic opportunity. The Mo Ibrahim Foundation, which compiles the index, measures categories including overall government performance, safety and rule of law, participation and human rights, sustainable economic opportunities and human development in African countries. Most Africans think they are business minded! I think this is an important distinction, ‘what you think you become!’ This does not mean that your business skills will be great or not so great; it means you aspire to greatness – which is an import element of success. Nothing has been given to Africans, a lot has been taken from Africa. Africans have learnt to create something from nothing. Often the only way out is to create it yourself. The African culture respects the entrepreneurial spirit and even encourages it.

Preparing for success…
IrokoTV
Start with the end in mind and have a big scary adventure or dream. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the steps in place. In fact, if you know all the steps to achieve your dream then your dream is not big enough. You don’t know how success will feel so focus on the journey and the challenges that you will have to overcome. Focus on what you can control, the future is yet to be lived.
How can you fail in business?
Fear of failure stops you from stretching your boundaries. Failure is the beginning of the lesson; the lesson is the opportunity to move forward, the opportunity is the beginning of your next success. I tell entrepreneurs that in business you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable and part of this is being willing to fail.

10 WAYS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF ADOPTION 1. Send a text to people you think could adopt or pass the message on that children need families. 2. Make it a topic of conversation. Drop some names of people who were adopted. The late Nelson Mandela is a starting point.
10. Read In Search of Belonging: D+E#+1(/"%#"9#!*,%4*,1/,55F#?&".(+&# people by Perlita Harris, published by BAAF.
3. Read actress Victoria Rowell’s memoir The Women Who Raised Me (Amistad, 2008) 4. Tweet.
