How The Black Farmer b Ionie Benjamin
S
ummer is here as is the season for barbecues when families, friends and acquaintances gather in their back garden to feast on all manner of grilled food. It is also a time when more and more people are conscious about what they eat. One man you can rely on to deliver on quality and wholesome ingredients is Willfred Emmanuel-Jones. He owns a farm in rural Devon and has been supplying the food chain with his popular Black Farmer brand of gluten-free sausages and meat balls, also free-range and organic chickens since 2005. The Black Farmer brand is the second largest premium sausage brand in the UK, with sales in excess of £11m on sausages and £15m on other products per annum. Thanks to people power, today all the main supermarkets stock his products. Emmanuel-Jones explains: “When I bought the farm I saw there was a massive gap between urban and rural Britain. My business was built on people trying the product, then visiting the website and emailing their supermarket asking them to stock my sausages. That’s how I got listings. I created an army of customer advocates. People were outraged that this poor black guy wasn’t given a chance. There is a natu-

ral sense of fairness that people have and if they can support you, they go out of their way to do so.” The fact that the beef and pork which The farmer produces are organic and gluten-free makes all the difference. “Before launching my own brand I thought the quality of sausages was pretty poor”, he said. “Traditionally, they used to take the nasty end of the pig, mix in some bread crumbs (as fillers), encase the mixture in skin, all of which was cheaper, so that is what they would sell as sausages. You could easily tell how bad they were as they were also filled with a lot of water and would start splitting when you fried them. All it needed was someone to come along with something different,” he added.
“Sausages have become a commodity but its consumption is in decline because of quality issues and health issues,” he said. “But the super premium ones, which are my sausages, are on the increase. The ingredients what sets my sausages apart is the 90 percent meat and the fact that they are also gluten-free and they don’t have any of the fillers. Equally importantly they are RSPCA approved.” Other food ranges manufactured by the farm include bacon, burgers, plus pork and beef balls, chicken, eggs and cheese. As this is the time of year for barbecues inevitably, sausages, chicken and burgers will be in demand. The farm is also an award-winning business, so with an annual turnover in excess of £15m, what is key toThe Black Farmer’s success? “I knew I could offer something so much better,” he said. “I also wanted a gluten-free product that could be eaten by the mainstream population, as this was the start

of the gluten-free revolution. I wanted something that had a really big standout. “The key aspect of my business model is that I decided I
The Black Farmer, is synonymous with quality and easily recognised nationwide. The chickens on the farm are reared free-range, they are corn fed and the rearing of livestock are RSPCA approved. He employs a team of specialists to handle the manufacturing process. “The work is contracted to big companies and they make the various food
products on my behalf and distribute them to all the big supermarkets such as Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons,” he said. The farm produces 20 tons of pork sausages every week. A well-earned title then as it is a the that The Black Farmer brand is the second largest premium sausage brand in the UK. The ten years he spent producing a food and wine programme for BBC TV and fifteen years running his own advertising agency has culminated in Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones success story.

Bone China with a Jamaican twist
J
enny Mein, a former international magazine food editor in London, was inspired by memories of the flowering plants and fruits of her childhood’s beautiful family garden on an old sugar estate in Jamaica. This inspired her to design a range of bone china tableware and giftware using her hand paintings of the fruit of the Ackee tree which grew in everyone’s back garden and is the national fruit of Jamaica. She launched her first collection, “Jamaican Ackee” in 1998 and was greatly encouraged by the marvellous response which led her to set up her company, Jen-
ny Mein Designs and a website. The china collection includes coffee mugs, salad plates, fruit bowl, candy dishes, pill boxes and more. She honed her botanical painting skills by attending courses at The Hobbyceram International School of Decorative Arts founded in Milan, Italy, which specialises in botanical painting on porcelain. Jenny Mein Designs are carefully produced to capture the essence and beauty of Caribbean gardens with their abundance of fruit trees and flowering plants. The china is produced exclusively under patent and manufactured using traditional methods at Stoke-on-Trent, England.
