WHO WE ARE

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer (LGBTQ+) Alliance Fund connects donors with projects that benefit the LGBTQ+ community in Southern Arizona through annual competitive grant rounds.

The LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund was created in 1999 by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona with support from the National Lesbian and Gay Community Funding Partnership. The Fund addresses the chronic underfunding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender programs through philanthropy and endowment building.

TO DATE, THE ALLIANCE FUND HAS AWARDED 219 GRANTS TO 75 ORGANIZATIONS, TOTALING $1,131,957.

Dear Loyal Supporter,

Happy Pride Month! The LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund is thrilled to provide a mid-year update about the incredible work of our 2022-2024 grantees.

At a time when LGBTQ+ Americans are facing a variety of barriers that significantly impact their quality of life and well-being, we are here to help. That’s why we’re staying focused on funding critical queer programs that address health care access, mentorship, housing attainment and affordability, youth and elder support, employment, legal protections, and so much more.

Thanks to your generous support, the 2022-2024 Alliance Fund grant cycle is midway.

Here are some of the major wins we want you to know about:

• We’ve awarded our largest grant round since 1999: $103,500 has been distributed to 12 local grantees. The average grant is now $8,625.

• We’re also transitioning to multi-year funding. This means our grantees can now count on two years of funding, for a combined total of $207,000 in ‘22 and ’23!

• Our endowment is growing. Our total endowed funds are closer than ever to reaching $1 million in assets.

As a result of the historic progress being made at the Alliance Fund, we are ready to dream big with you in our next chapter of growth and transformation.

FLORENCE IMMIGRANT & REFUGEE PROJECT

The Alliance Fund grant is supporting detained LGBTQ+ migrants and asylum seekers who want greater opportunity in the United States. Our clients are usually impoverished and do not have access to very much money. Unfortunately, there are a lot of financial costs involved in the immigration process. These costs include application and filing fees, transportation costs, expert witness testimonies, medical or mental health evaluations, bond fees, and various other costs. We feel that the combination of the training sessions and covering client costs will help our staff to provide the best quality resources and services for our LGBTQ+ clients.”

On Thursday, October 21, 2022, the Alliance Fund hosted its annual Queer for GOOD! Celebration at the Historic Hotel Congress in downtown Tucson. The free celebration was attended by more than 400 supporters and raised $90,000—the highest amount raised in one night in the Fund’s 23-year history. In addition to introducing our 20222024 grantees, the celebration featured Pima County Board of Supervisors Chair

HONORING DOUG NOFSINGER, 1942–2023

The Alliance Fund mourns the passing— and celebrates the life—of our Emeritus Board Member and former Board Chair, Doug Noffsinger. Doug was an honored audiologist, staunch advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, avid bird watcher, and world traveler. He passed away in March 2023.

Born in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado, Doug graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1964 and obtained his PhD in audiology from Northwestern University in 1968. In 1980, Doug, and his longtime partner, Roger Funk, moved to Los Angeles at the invitation of the Veterans Administration hospital in West LA. Doug became Chief of the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service of the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System and Associate Professor in Residence, Department of Head & Neck Surgery, UCLA School of Medicine.

In 2004, Doug retired and he and Roger moved to Tucson, where Doug was an advocate for gay rights and loyal supporter of the Alliance Fund. Doug dreamed big for our grantees, and was one of three major donors to support the hiring of a paid staff position to elevate the Alliance Fund’s impact in Southern Arizona.

2022 DOUG NOFFSINGER ALLY AWARD JENNY CARRILLO

The Alliance Fund Advisory Board proudly selected Jenny Carrillo of Alexander | Carrillo Consulting as the recipient of our 2022 Doug Noffsinger Ally Award. The award uplifts individuals who have a solid track record supporting our LGBTQ+ loved ones in Southern Arizona. Jenny, a prolific fundraising and non-profit consultant, was chosen in honor of her long-standing allyship and critical role in helping the Alliance Fund grow as the region’s premier LGBTQ+ philanthropic organization. “Jenny’s invaluable guidance has helped to transform the Alliance Fund and we are forever grateful for unwavering allyship,” said Emeritus Board Member Cynthia Garcia. The award was presented to Jenny at the Fund’s 2022 Queer for GOOD Celebration at Hotel Congress.

PLANNING AHEAD: THE ALLIANCE FUND ENDOWMENT

UPDATE FROM ANNE DOUGHERTY, DEVELOPMENT CHAIR

An endowment is a permanent fund that generates income to support the organization’s programs and operations over time. By growing an endowment, a nonprofit can create a reliable source of funding that is not dependent on the ups and downs of annual fundraising efforts.

Since 2021, the LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund has seen significant growth in our total endowed funds. In fact, we’ve nearly tripled our assets in the last two years—and now, our endowment is closer than ever to surpassing $1 million.
