Community Foundation for Southern Arizona Report to the Community Fiscal Year 2021
Together, we are building an equitable and vibrant community for all. Many of us will remember 2021, year two of the COVID-19 pandemic and the reckoning for racial justice following the murder of George Floyd, as a time marked by both continued struggle and renewal. As reflected in this annual report, our Southern Arizona community has pulled together to invest in resilience. Through the creation of new partnerships, continued COVID-19 relief funding, and the remarkable generosity of our donors, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona has been at the forefront of opportunities to build nonprofit resilience in our region. The needs of our communities carry on, and the challenges of this pandemic affect lives daily. In fiscal year 2021, CFSA continued to support the vulnerable individuals and families most affected by the pandemic and the nonprofits who serve them by providing grants in collaboration with CFSA’s funding partners and donors. As of December 2021, CFSA’s COVID-19 relief funding to Southern Arizona nonprofits exceeded $3.8 million, with 93% of grantee organizations serving marginalized populations. CFSA also stepped up our long-standing commitment to increasing the capacity of Southern Arizona’s nonprofit community through new partnerships and expanded programming. CFSA’s Catchafire program, which pairs nonprofits with volunteers with expertise, grew from 100 nonprofits to over 300 nonprofits. Several new partnerships were established, including a collaboration with The University of Arizona’s Eller College to offer nonprofit professionals free, high-quality training that culminated in a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Management. CFSA is proud to serve as a connector, convener, resource, and investor, now and forever, in the resilience of our community.

Our Initiatives The African American Legacy Fund (AALF) works to address the educational and economic disparities faced by African Americans who call Southern Arizona home. Established in 2013, AALF supports innovative educational programs for African American youth in the community. AALF is led by an advisory board whose members are committed to impacting our community, raising funds each year to grant to nonprofit organizations and building an endowment fund to ensure philanthropic dollars are available in perpetuity.
Catchafire is an online, volunteer-matching platform that
matches nonprofits with professional, virtual volunteers to help complete the projects critical for a nonprofit organization’s success. Since adding Catchafire to its programming in 2019, CFSA has helped 348 nonprofit organizations in Southern Arizona save over $4.7 million through 23,942 volunteer hours. The Center for Healthy Nonprofits strengthens the Southern Arizona nonprofit community by offering free and low-cost support for nonprofit professionals and volunteers. Nonprofit organizations are critical partners in CFSA’s efforts to create an equitable and vibrant community for all. Beyond grantmaking, the Foundation is committed to increasing the availability of organizational development resources for local nonprofits. Work in the nonprofit sector presents unique challenges, often stemming from too few resources. The Center works to fill that resource gap and maximize the impact of every nonprofit. The Community Foundation Campus opened in January 2019 as a shared space for community advancement. The Campus was designed to strengthen Southern Arizona’s nonprofit community by cultivating an environment that promotes networking, partnerships, and shared learning. The Campus spans more than 24,000 square feet across three buildings with a central courtyard. It offers open and enclosed offices for lease to nonprofits, nonprofit suites, shared amenities, numerous meeting and event spaces, and a drop-in coworking space.
Our Services The CORE Grants Program was introduced in April 2017 to increase the availability of general operating support for high-impact nonprofits in Southern Arizona. CORE grants are rooted in mutual trust with the philosophy that organizations understand their unique needs and can demonstrate and achieve impact. In 2019, CFSA launched the CORE Collaborator Program to offer donors and funding partners the opportunity to hear firsthand from nonprofit staff about the critical needs in the community and meet other donors who share their commitment and passion. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Queer (LGBTQ+) Alliance Fund seeks to foster charitable giving
in support of innovative programs and initiatives that benefit the LGBTQ+ community in Southern Arizona. Created in 1999 in partnership with the National Lesbian and Gay Community Funding Partnership, the Alliance Fund connects donors with projects that benefit the LGBTQ+ community through annual competitive grant rounds and endowment building.
Making Action Possible (MAP) Dashboard was created
to measurably improve Southern Arizona through datadriven, collective civic action and education. MAP fills a gap by providing a common collection of information to evaluate our community and collaborate to address our shared issues. MAP is the product of a partnership between the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, the Pima Association of Governments, the Southern Arizona Leadership Council, Sun Corridor, Inc., and the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management.
Pima Alliance for Animal Welfare (PAAW), an initiative
of CFSA, works to ensure that all Pima County companion animals have a loving home and humane care. Established in 2012, the group currently has three focus areas: building up and spreading the word about resources for people and their pets, a marketing campaign to adopt locally, and a program to help housebound seniors and disabled individuals get what they need for their pets.
Individuals and Families: The Community Foundation
for Southern Arizona (CFSA) staff members provide personalized service to individuals and families to help them identify and actualize their philanthropic goals. We learn about their interests and recommend a combination of giving vehicles to best achieve those goals. Some giving vehicles are designed to support a specific charity over several years or support a particular community cause of the donor’s choosing. Others allow the individual or family to receive an immediate tax deduction with the continuing ability to recommend grants to various charities year after year. There are also ways to partner with CFSA to build our investment in the community. Understanding that the needs of a community change over time, many donors support our community’s endowment fund, providing a path for CFSA to address Southern Arizona’s most pressing needs, now and into the future.
Southern Arizona Nonprofit Organizations: In
addition to the financial support provided to Southern Arizona nonprofits through donor advised grants and competitive grantmaking, CFSA also supports local nonprofits with capacity-building and technical assistance through its Center for Healthy Nonprofits. The Center’s training programs include a variety of workshops, roundtables, and seminars featuring both “hot topics” and essential nonprofit management and leadership curricula. By tapping into the rich resource of the nonprofit consulting community in Southern Arizona and nationally recognized experts, the Center offers nonprofits of all sizes valuable guidance and skill development. CFSA also provides endowment management services for nonprofits ready to engage in endowment building to provide financial support to their organization in perpetuity.

Supporting Organizations and Geographic Affiliates Southern Arizona Businesses: CFSA offers expertise and administrative support to help businesses achieve their philanthropic goals. While individual business needs vary, they have the opportunity to benefit from the professional administration services offered by CFSA to leverage their support to the community by: • Distributing grants on behalf of the business. • Providing status reports, thereby reducing its internal processes. • Ensuring grants are sent to legitimate nonprofit organizations supporting the community. • Recommending specific community needs that align with their mission and philanthropic goals
Private Foundations: In recent years, families
interested in establishing a private foundation have found that opening a donor advised fund instead may help them meet their philanthropic goals while avoiding the burdensome reporting requirements and taxes imposed on private foundations. Established family and private foundations experience similar benefits by converting into a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation. Although family members may continue to make grant recommendations, CFSA will ensure that the donor’s original philanthropic objectives are honored.
Professional Advisors: Individuals rely on professional advisors — attorneys, financial planners, CPAs, trust officers, investment advisors, and insurance agents — to guide them in the process of making decisions about their estate plans. CFSA partners with professional advisors to help establish giving mechanisms that maximize their client’s tax benefits and ensure their philanthropic intent is honored, now and forever.

Center for Healthy Nonprofits
218+ hours of organizational
development support offered through the Center in fiscal year 2021
CFSA offers high-quality, easily accessible organizational development resources through the Center for Healthy Nonprofits. In addition to the consistent opportunities for learning and support for leaders provided through the Center, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted additional training opportunities during the year focused on coping with COVID and helping leaders adapt to ongoing uncertainty and change. An essential feature of the Center’s programs is connecting nonprofit professionals through peer-to-peer roundtables to enhance their collective knowledge, share experiences, exchange ideas, and provide opportunities to network. In addition, multi-session training
courses and Ask an Expert sessions help current and aspiring leaders further their knowledge, build leadership skills, and build the next generation of executive leaders for our region. The Center also offers educational programs for board members to strengthen their skills, support effective partnerships with staff, and enhance local board governance. Through Center programming, CFSA staff identified several trends for 2021, including requests for support with board development, strategic planning, leadership coaching, succession planning, and fundraising guidance. To provide local nonprofits with additional access to expertise and support, the Center launched TeamUp, a new
program that connects nonprofits with local consultants who serve nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits receive up to 20 hours of consulting or coaching that is fully underwritten. In addition to supporting general Center programming, the Connie Hillman Family Foundation was a critical partner in designing and funding the TeamUp program.
“We’ve noted many wonderful nonprofits in the community who need the kind of boost that working with a consultant can provide. As a core supporter of staff enhancement efforts by the Center for Healthy Nonprofits, the Connie Hillman Family Foundation initiated a new partnership with CFSA and is underwriting our joint response to this need.” – Larry Adamson, Connie Hillman Family Foundation In fiscal year 2021, the Center offered several multi-session programs including a CEO/ED Survival Series and Achieving Your Career Goals.
From workshops dedicated to self-care practices to a four-part webinars series to increase basic fundraising knowledge and skills, the Center for Healthy Nonprofits offers a wide variety of resources.

Community Foundation Campus Although the Campus remained closed to non-tenants in fiscal year 2021 due to COVID-19, CFSA staff utilized that time to complete several projects and facility improvements. In 2019, the dream of creating a nonprofit campus for Southern Arizona became a reality. Thanks to generous support from our donors, the Community Foundation Campus offers nonprofit organizations multiple ways to convene, collaborate, and grow. The Campus provides secure and professional office space for nonprofits with one to four employees in the coworking lab, 1,000 square foot nonprofit suites, and several meeting and event spaces.
The Campus Donor Recognition Wall was installed during the closure, and the remaining suites were built out to offer nonprofits a welcoming, turnkey option. In March 2021, local artist Ignacio Garcia completed a large-scale, three-sided mural at the CF Campus. The completion of this mural fulfilled the vision that Clint Mabie, CFSA’s former President and CEO, had for the Community Foundation Campus when the building was first acquired back in 2017.
Upon the announcement of Clint’s retirement in June 2020, several donors generously contributed the funds necessary to bring his vision of a large-scale mural to life. CFSA worked with the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona and a mural committee comprised of CFSA staff and trustees, Campus tenants, representatives from CFSA’s initiatives, and local community members to select three finalists from nineteen applicants. Thanks to our generous donors and Ignacio Garcia’s vision, CFSA is proud to present a mural that not only honors Clint’s significant contributions to the Foundation over the last decade but also highlights the diverse and vibrant communities we serve.
During the COVID-19 closure, the remaining nonprofit suites were built out to offer nonprofits looking for office space a welcoming, turnkey option.
Thanks to our generous donors and artist Ignacio Garcia’s vision, CFSA is proud to present a mural for our Campus that highlights the diverse and vibrant communities we serve.

The Amerind Foundation promotes knowledge and understanding of the Native Peoples of the Americas.
The CORE Grants program was introduced in April 2017 to increase the availability of general operating support for high-impact nonprofits in Southern Arizona. Most importantly, CORE grants provide nonprofit organizations the flexibility to direct their spending where it is most needed, enabling them to build a strong and sustainable infrastructure. In April 2021, $854,000 in CORE Grants was awarded to 42 nonprofits in Southern Arizona to provide the flexible working capital necessary to maximize their impact and improve the quality of life in Southern Arizona. Areas funded include human services; arts and culture; environment and

animals; legal services; education; health; youth and elderly services; immigrant services; and Native/Indigenous support. With over $2.3 million in CORE Grants distributed since 2017, CFSA and its donor collaborators are dedicated to supporting local nonprofits and promoting equity within Southern Arizona. This past year, greater strides toward equity through CORE grantmaking were seen through additional support to rural organizations, organizations that serve marginalized populations, and new grantees. Kelly Huber, Vice President for Philanthropy at CFSA, shared, “CORE Grants are made in partnership with generous donors who understand the importance of general operating support and its ability to foster innovation, reduce power dynamics, and support flexibility and trust. This year’s grant recipients represent an expansion in our funding, with an 18 percent increase in the total amount funded compared to last year, along with our commitment to support equitable distribution of grant dollars.” Grants were given to organizations in all Southern Arizona counties, including Pima, Pinal, Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Santa Cruz, and Yuma counties. Of the 42 2021 grantees, 83 percent serve marginalized populations, 20 percent are headquartered in rural areas, and 52 percent are firsttime CORE grantees. Funds were further distributed equitably by organizational budgets; 14 percent have a budget below
$200,000; 59 percent of the total funded organizations have a budget below $500,000, and 24 percent have budgets over $1,000,000. Barbara McClure, Executive Director of Impact of Southern Arizona, a CORE Grant recipient, shared, “It takes an innovative organization to back the concept of investing in infrastructure and preparation for sustainable capacity building. Because of you, we will all continue to grow strong and provide services for many years to come.” Please see page forty of this report for a complete list of 2021 CORE Grantees. COVID-19 Response
$3.8+ million in COVID-19 relief funding
awarded since March 2020, in collaboration with CFSA’s funding partners and generous donors
In 2020, our community faced a challenge unlike anything we’ve encountered before. The impact of COVID-19 on the nonprofit community was unprecedented. Within weeks, it affected the capacity and sustainability of every type of nonprofit — from education to the environment, affordable housing to behavioral health services, animal welfare to the arts. In response, CFSA established a robust COVID-19 Community Response Strategy to meet the needs of critical nonprofit partners and the communities they serve. In fiscal year 2021, in collaboration with CFSA’s funding partners and generous donors, an additional $2.2 million in

COVID-19 relief funding was provided to 141 nonprofit organizations in Southern Arizona. In addition to continued funding from CFSA’s COVID-19 Community Support Fund and COVID-19 Event Relief Fund, CFSA also facilitated $1.2 million in grants through the We Are One | Somos Uno CARES Act Nonprofit Continuity Grant Program. Created by the Mayor and Council of Tucson, the program supported nonprofits in Tucson and South Tucson affected by the pandemic. Grantees were asked what actions they would have taken to manage the pandemic’s impact if they had not received additional funding. The majority of organizations responded that without COVID-19 relief funding, they
would have faced the following options: reduce staff or reduce the number of people receiving essential services. Multiple organizations stated they would have had to close indefinitely. Kurtis Dawson, President and CEO of The YMCA of Southern Arizona, shared, “The community support we have received during this challenging time has allowed us to continue to serve our community’s most critical needs, thank you!” Courtney Slanaker, Executive Director of American Red Cross Southern Arizona Chapter, shared, “Thank you, CFSA, for supporting our critical work in responding

to emergent mass care needs for the humanitarian crisis at the border. The grant has enabled us to provide shelter supplies to community partners as well as reunification services for migrants and asylum seekers.” As part of “Phase Two: Recover & Renew” of our COVID-19 Response Strategy, CFSA provided additional capacity-building support beyond grantmaking through various partnerships. In collaboration with the Connie Hillman Family Foundation, our Center for Healthy Nonprofits launched TeamUp, a program designed to connect nonprofits with the rich resources of the consulting professionals who serve nonprofit organizations in Southern Arizona.
The Center also implemented a new program, Achieving Your Nonprofit Career Goals, to provide practical information about the roles, responsibilities, and skills of well-rounded and successful CEOs/EDs and senior leaders through a 7-part series. In January 2021, CFSA implemented a partnership with The University of Arizona’s Eller Executive Education to provide nonprofit leadership and management training to local nonprofit professionals. Through the nonprofit leadership and management training provided by Eller Faculty, nonprofits were able to create plans for long-term sustainability and build donor confidence during these turbulent times.

The award-winning Making Action Possible (MAP) Dashboard was formed through a unique partnership between the University of Arizona, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, and the Southern Arizona Leadership Council to develop a project to measurably improve Southern Arizona through data-driven, collective civic action, and education. The MAP Dashboard fills a resource gap by providing a common collection of research and information upon which to evaluate and measure key socio-economic indicators in our community and collaborate to address our shared issues.
Pima Alliance for Animal Welfare In addition to the regular data updates completed throughout the year, twenty feature articles and three white papers appeared on the MAP website in fiscal year 2021. These included articles on Tucson’s housing market and housing affordability, the impact of COVID-19 on the local economy, the wellbeing of juvenile justice-involved youth in Arizona, and more. Community engagement is a vital part of the MAP Dashboard. Researchers from the University of Arizona’s Business Research Center gave bi-monthly public presentations to local residents last year, including the Eller Economic Outlook Luncheon, Breakfast with the Economists, and the MAP Talk webinar series. In addition, MAP partnered with the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona to host a virtual food insecurity event that brought together over 206 individuals throughout Southern Arizona.

Community Foundation for Southern Arizona Report to the Community Fiscal Year 2021
Clockwise from top left: Johanna Troller Barr, her brother Theodor Troller III, her sister Christina Troller Sternberg, and her Austrian cousin Dorothea Weissenberger.
Since 2002, the Troller Fund has provided generous funding to Southern Arizona nonprofits that support children and youth, education, literacy, basic needs, the environment, and more.
Building a Philanthropic Legacy The Troller Fund was established at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona by Dr. Theodor H. Troller, an aerospace engineer who was instrumental in developing the one-piece vaneaxial fan used in most commercial and military aircraft from 1946 to 1960.
In 1953, Dr. Troller moved his family to a ranch in Portal, Arizona. Although he continued to work as an engineering consultant, Dr. Troller actively embraced his life in the Southwest. He greatly appreciated the opportunities afforded to him by this country and gave back to numerous causes.
Dr. Troller was born in 1903 in Haida, Bohemia, now Novy Bor, in the Czech Republic. Following service in the Czech Army, he completed his engineering degree in Darmstadt, Germany, and then his Doctorate of Engineering in Aviation from Aachen, Germany Technical University. During that time, he studied under Dr. Theodor Von Karman, who brought him to the United States in 1931 to direct the Daniel Guggenheim Airship Institute in Akron, Ohio.
After his wife Margaret’s death in 1977, Dr. Troller moved to Tucson, where he continued to engage with the Southern Arizona community. Following Dr. Troller’s death in 2000, his daughter Johanna Troller Barr worked closely with the staff at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona to continue his philanthropic legacy through the Troller Fund.
During WWII, Dr. Troller worked with the U.S. Navy on jet-propelled missiles. He also served in the U.S. Army Special Services reviewing German technical literature, interviewing German researchers and scientists, and visiting research sites.
Between 2002 and 2021, the Troller Fund distributed over $4.7 million in charitable gifts and provided sustained funding to dozens of Southern Arizona nonprofits. From the restoration of the San Xavier del Bac Mission to basic needs like food and housing to critical resources for education and children, Mrs. Barr has created lasting impact and opportunities that will benefit our community for generations to come.
Dr. Theodor H. Troller held numerous patents including the one above for the Axial Flow Fan Structure he invented.

Mrs. Barr’s dedication to fulfilling – and expanding – her father’s philanthropic vision has helped countless individuals in our community live a better, fuller life. Mrs. Barr shared, “I cannot thank the people at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona enough for their guidance and support. Over the last twenty years, every person I worked with has been fantastic. They have been a wonderful resource and helped me stay connected to the nonprofit community in Southern Arizona. I left Tucson in the 1970s to live in El Paso, TX, which made the Arizona community advice from CFSA absolutely essential.” “Johanna’s many years of generous support have contributed to the academic success of thousands of youth experiencing homelessness in Southern Arizona. We are so grateful for everything that she and the Troller Fund have done to help YOTO youth stay in school, graduate, and reach their dreams!” – Elizabeth Slater, CEO, Youth On Their Own
Patronato San Xavier “The Troller Fund’s generous gifts have allowed us to complete
several major projects. Across the last five years, these grants have been applied towards the ongoing conservation of the original interior artwork, the very “heart” of the Mission, and what makes San Xavier del Bac such a special place. We are very grateful to the Troller Fund for recognizing the importance of this heritage conservation project.” – Miles Green, Executive Director, Patronato San Xavier

Tucson Village Farm “In 2017, Tucson Village Farm was awarded a gift from the Troller Fund that marked a critical turning point for our organization. For years we had held true to our vision and goal of teaching kids and families how to prepare simple, healthy meals from farm-fresh ingredients. We had navigated broken stoves and limited resources and had hand-washed thousands of dishes. We had turned people away because the shared kitchen space was not available to us, and we worried all the while because our equipment wasn’t certified. But on the eve of the 9th anniversary of our ground-breaking, our fortunes-and those of the many thousands of youth in our community changed, thanks to the Troller Fund. Their gift supported the purchase of all new commercial kitchen equipment and then some. The timing of the Troller Fund’s gift was such that we could leverage those funds to secure a substantial award from Angel Charity for Children to build a commercially certified teaching kitchen. The generosity of the Troller Fund allowed us to finally come full circle with our seed-to-table programming and teach thousands of kids each year how to prepare healthy meals for themselves and their families. It is a rare and beautiful thing when one person has the capacity to make a difference in the lives of so many and does. We are forever indebted to Johanna Barr and the Troller Fund. They will be in our hearts and our “farm”ily forever.” – Leza Carter, Founder, Tucson Village Farm

In fiscal year 2021, CFSA launched several new partnerships to help our nonprofit partners serve their communities through the ongoing pandemic and beyond.
Partnerships for Good
Boys & Girls Club of Tucson, one of CFSA’s Catchafire members, provides young people in our community with a clear path to reach their full potential and pursue their dreams.
Catchafire As a part of CFSA’s long-term COVID-19 recovery strategy, we expanded our Catchafire programming in fiscal year 2021 to offer year-long memberships to 300 nonprofits in Southern Arizona, up from 100 the year prior. Between July 2020 and June 2021, our Catchafire grantees saved $2,587,505 by utilizing Catchafire volunteers. Catchafire is an online, volunteer-matching platform that matches nonprofits with professional, virtual volunteers to help complete the projects critical for a nonprofit organization’s success. Selected organizations received in-depth training, webinar support, and tech support throughout the process to maximize their impact.
To increase the reach of this effective program, CFSA partnered with other regional funders, including Arizona Community Foundation of Cochise, Arizona Community Foundation of Yuma, The David and Lura Lovell Foundation, Legacy Foundation of Southeast Arizona, Tucson Foundations, Vitalyst Health Foundation, and Thomas R. Brown Foundations. The scope of volunteer work is incredibly diverse, allowing nonprofit staff and leadership to focus on the most important aspects of their mission, while skilled volunteers support that mission through specific projects or guidance.
Scott Pralinsky, Executive Director of Echoing Hope Ranch, located in Hereford, AZ, shared of their Catchafire volunteer, “He gave me very specific steps to not only prioritize my work, but to make it realistic, get buy-in from other stakeholders, and track our progress.” Of the 300 Catchafire memberships granted in fiscal year 2021, one-third was provided to rural nonprofits that typically have less access to volunteers and consultants than a metrobased nonprofit. Since adding Catchafire to its programming in 2019, CFSA has helped 348 nonprofit organizations in Southern Arizona save over $4.7 million through 23,942 volunteer hours.

TeamUp
CFSA is extremely thankful to the generous funding partners who allowed us to expand our Catchafire program and serve more Southern Arizona nonprofits.
To provide local nonprofits with additional access to expertise and support, CFSA’s Center for Healthy Nonprofits launched TeamUp in February 2021. The TeamUp program connects nonprofits with consulting professionals who serve nonprofit organizations in Southern Arizona. Nonprofits receive up to 20 hours of consulting or Border Youth Tennis Exchange is a cross-border youth development coaching that is fully organization that offers tennis and academic classes. underwritten. TeamUp was launched in partnership with the Connie Hillman Family Foundation, a leading philanthropic organization that invests in building nonprofit capacity. Thanks to their generosity, TeamUp projects are helping to create a more equitable and vibrant Southern Arizona Community. Charlie Cutler, Executive Director of Border Youth Tennis Exchange (BYTE), partnered with Clyde Kunz, a Tucson-based consultant. Kunz has served the nonprofit community for the past 30 years and specializes in nonprofit fund and board development. After experiencing rapid growth and program expansion, BYTE needed assistance managing new administrative and governance challenges, along with increased staffing and revenue. Cutler shared, “Clyde’s contribution was a welcome resource to help BYTE engage its board and begin to tackle the planning and capacity building needed to sustain its larger scope. Clyde designed and facilitated a board retreat, advised on updated board institutions, and helped me conceptualize how a larger network of program sites and cities could operate.”
More than 60 nonprofits benefited from the expertise of local consultants through TeamUp in 2021 at no cost to them, including Community Gardens of Tucson.

Nonprofit Leadership & Management Certificate Program In 2020, we heard directly from local nonprofits that continued grant funding along with technical assistance were essential to help them recover from the impact of the pandemic. Launched in 2021, the Nonprofit Leadership & Management Certificate Program was specifically designed to meet that need. Developed in partnership with The University of Arizona’s Eller Executive Education, the program offers six custom learning modules to help nonprofit staff adapt and innovate now and into the future. In addition to the certificate program, participating nonprofits receive additional support through webinars jointly hosted and facilitated by CFSA’s Center for Healthy Nonprofits and Eller faculty. To date, over 220 nonprofit professionals in Southern Arizona have completed the coursework necessary to earn their Nonprofit Leadership & Management Certificate. The training and certificate program is provided free of charge to local nonprofit professionals, thanks to community donors at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. One participant from this program shared the impact of the coursework on their nonprofit work, stating, “This class provided the space to reevaluate the way I lead an organization and how I can be more effective. I look forward to my next board meeting so I can apply these skills and create a dynamic forum where everyone feels committed to a shared mission!” “Thank you for offering this life-changing experience to us so we can be better equipped for the future.” – Brie Seward, Autism Society of Southern Arizona

Take Your Shot Campaign In May 2021, CFSA provided $33,000 in COVID-19 relief funding to Arizona Center for Empowerment to support an innovative grassroots campaign aimed at increasing COVID-19 vaccine education, registration, and distribution to vulnerable communities in Pima County. Additional funding partners for this campaign included Tucson Electric Power and United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona. The Take YOUR Shot Campaign is a unique partnership that combines traditional media outreach with grassroots canvassing and phone banking to share COVID-19 vaccine information and encourage people to get vaccinated. Arizona Center for Empowerment worked with Pima Council on Aging and Pima County Health Department to mobilize door-to-door canvassing and phone banking to inform people about vaccines available in their neighborhoods and offer educational resources about COVID-19 and the vaccine. Anna Rojo Keene, Vaccine Campaign Manager for Arizona Center for Empowerment, shared, “Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities have disproportionately faced barriers in healthcare access throughout the pandemic and into the vaccination distribution. Our campaign will utilize our presence in the community to conduct outreach, provide logistical and technological support, canvassers, and volunteers to reach people at home and in the community to increase vaccine access and awareness.” In addition to the grassroots outreach provided by the Arizona Center for Empowerment, Pima Council on Aging launched a bilingual marketing campaign featuring television, radio, print, and social media advertisements to encourage older adults and those who care for them to get their COVID-19 vaccination.
5,000+ conversations via phone about vaccine options and appointment scheduling
7,600+ conversations at doors in areas with high social vulnerability index scores
“I believe everyone in the community should have equal access to getting vaccinated, and I am glad I was able to help some of the elderly make an appointment to get vaccinated at home.” – Take Your Shot Campaign Volunteer

“I wish for all of us, including myself, to develop our awareness of the possibilities for compassion and charity in our lives.” – Roberta Bracker
Remembering Roberta Roberta Bracker was an inspirational civic leader and a strong believer in giving back to her community. Volunteer work and philanthropy were an integral part of her life. For more than 60 years, she raised money and volunteered for countless nonprofit organizations throughout Santa Cruz County, Arizona, and generously supported the causes near and dear to her heart. Roberta was an inspirational, creative, and perceptive woman who brimmed with enthusiasm. Her childhood nickname ‘Birdie’ captures her free, open spirit. Roberta’s curiosity and passion were evident in her life’s work – seeking knowledge and practicing conventional and integrative approaches to wellness. At her sister Esther’s wedding to Richard Capin, she met her future husband, Robert ‘Bobby’ Bracker. Together, they raised four children in Nogales – Nellie, Michael, Steven, and Bruce. Although Roberta was predeceased at mid-life by her husband Bobby, she was fortunate to find the loving companionship of her partner William Monaghan with whom she was inseparable for 26 years.
Throughout her 63 adult years in Nogales, Roberta was instrumental in developing progressive community infrastructure. She spearheaded the construction of the Hilltop Gallery, inspired the formation of The Family Guidance Center, promoted the musical programs of Young Audiences, and was critical to the formation of the Nogales Public Library. Roberta was a founding crusader of The Santa Cruz Training Programs, Inc. for children and adults with developmental disabilities. She also supported the creation of Circles of Peace, a local nonprofit committed to developing communication skills to end the cycle of violence in families with abusive patterns. Roberta was also actively engaged in the creation and evolution of the Santa Cruz Community Foundation, a permanent charitable resource founded in 2001 to strengthen the Santa Cruz community. Thanks to the support of generous individuals like Roberta, the Foundation has been working to make Santa Cruz County a better place to live and work by providing scholarships to students, grants to local nonprofits, and training to increase the capacity of local organizations.

Roberta succumbed to a spirited battle with Parkinson’s disease and passed away peacefully on June 3, 2021, just one day shy of her 83rd birthday. She left behind a remarkable legacy of generosity, kindness, and civic leadership. In recognition of Roberta’s significant contributions to the community of Nogales and Santa Cruz County, the Santa Cruz Community Foundation renamed its annual leadership award in her honor. The Roberta Bracker Memorial Civic Leadership Award will be presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional civic leadership and commitment to making Santa Cruz County a better place to live.
