Remembering Willie Moore June 2, 1932 – April 14, 2017

Southern Arizona lost a true gem with the passing of Willie B. Moore.

Willie was instrumental in helping his father, Edward R. Moore, identify fellow philanthropists to help him co-found what is now CFSA. He believed in the power of giving back and used to say “Giving back is in our DNA.” He also believed in making a difference in this community, and that’s why he continued to be involved through the years with CFSA, including serving as a member of the board.

We will continue to cherish Willie’s warmth, kindness, good humor and loving heart, and we are honored to dedicate this newsletter to our dear friend and his family.

Since 1980, hundreds of individuals have worked tirelessly to built our community foundation. They have, through their time, talent, treasure and toil created a place in which all are welcome and have a voice in impacting the place we call home. The community has constructed an invaluable asset which this year will invest nearly $10M.

From this foundation, we are moving into the next stage of our impact by creating a physical manifestation of our mission through the establishment of the Community Foundation Campus at 5049 E. Broadway Blvd.

A recent national study concluded that nonprofit organizations that shared spaces experienced an increase in their overall effectiveness and efficiency which ultimately yielded greater impact for the communities they served.

They also reported an average cost savings of 7% annually, a 72% rise in awareness and credibility, 66% saw an increase in collaboration and 55% reported a significant improvement in their service delivery to their clients.

The 25,000 square foot Community Foundation Campus will also house our partner organizations and initiatives including Social Venture Partners, the LGBT&S Alliance Fund and the African American Initiative, and providing a convening place for ALL to create a focal point for diversity and inclusion.

We are currently in the architectural and planning phase, and hope to open the doors of the campus in summer of 2018. Stay tuned for more information on the progress of the project.

Thank you for Joining us in Making Southern Arizona a Better Place for All On March 8, more than 270 donors, nonprofits and friends celebrated with CFSA during its annual event at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre.

The night was filled with great stories, incredible honorees – Ann Weaver Hart, Ray Davies, Barry Corey and Mark Homan – and exciting communitydriven initiatives like MAP Dashboard and the launch of CORE grants.

Reasons to update your estate plan It is never too late to complete your estate plan or to update it. An update every three to five years is suggested to have an effective estate plan that successfully honors your wishes. Some of the more common reasons for updating your will or trust are changes in the family by death, marriage or re-marriage, relationship with a significant other, births, and others reasons such as: • Unexpected inheritance? Many baby boomers are inheriting funds and property that they did not realize would be coming to them. There are ways to turn real estate into charitable giving and receive a lifetime income.

• Changes in the marital status of your beneficiaries?

Marriages, divorce, living together are situations that might have implications for your beneficiary list.

• Planning for children or grandchildren? When children reach the age of 18, their needs may be different. For example, instead of a guardianship for them, provide for an educational fund.

• Does a family member or dear friend have special needs that you want to address? An older person needing live-in care or assisted living?

• Changes in tax laws requiring an update.

• Do you want to change your trustee or personal representative? Your powers of attorney? Update a living will?

• Do you have concerns about your pet(s) and want to be sure they are protected?

• Do you want to add to/ change your charitable beneficiaries because you are now involved with different non-profits?

1. What three important things or experiences have brought you to where you are today?

When I was born, the doctors did not know whether I would live or die. Since then, my experiences as a hemophiliac have taught me that living and spreading life to others is my only option. This mindset has made me able to spread my smile in the Arizona Junior State of America as their leader. There, I witnessed the power speech had to transform lives. In college, I was approved as a CFSA Board Member. CFSA has reinforced my commitment to people.

2. How has the experience of being a CFSA Trustee changed you?

CFSA is a dynamic team of people pursuing purpose.

Joining the board has shown me the immaculate characters of those who do so the most. Characters who are gracious and humble. They do not fight for credit, but thank one another. I aspire to be as humble as they are.

3. Would you rather be an inventor or a leader? Why? Leaders tend to be legendary, and inventors tend to be innovative. I strive to be the best of both. Inventors create or find new applications of processes, services, and products. Leaders can take these findings and escalate their availability to people in need. To become my bestself, I hope to develop innovative initiatives that leave a legendary impact on the community.

4. Over the course of your life, how many cities have you lived in and which was your favorite?

Sirens blazing and cows moo’ing – I have lived and loved both of my childhood homes. As a child, I lived in the heart of downtown in San Jose, CA. Everything was available nearby, but the stars grew farther away. Moving to Yuma, AZ was a big change for me, but I loved it for the opposite reason. I saw the stars as if they were living dots etched on a textured sky, but knew that my stagnation in a small town could not match their eternity. In Tucson, I found a middle-ground. I could get involved and look up.

Two years down and two to go, I could not be happier.

5. What do you think other people should know about CFSA? CFSA exists. It exists for the community. My peers at the University of Arizona should know that CFSA is an organization that has impacted them directly or indirectly whether they know it or not – our work with the University of Arizona proves that. As a Board Member, I intend to make them realize it could be a home for them, too.

Adopt Love Adopt Local Barking Success!

On Saturday, April 15th, volunteers from CFSA, Tucson Electric Power and the University of Arizona welcomed over 2,000 people from southern Arizona who came together with one goal in mind, to help the homeless pets in our community. The Pima Alliance for Animal Welfare, an initiative of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona since 2012, each year holds this event with two goals in mind: 1) to build community within animal welfare agencies and 2) to see how many animals can be adopted out in one day. Both goals were achieved with 46 animal welfare groups in attendance and 121 animals adopted. To learn more about this initiative, please visit facebook.com/adoptlocal for more photos and updates.

Give where you live If you have charitable intentions and are thinking about the benefits of a Donor Advised Fund (DAF), you can easily open one with a minimum of $10,000. A donor advised fund gives you the opportunity to receive an immediate tax deduction and allows you to make distributions to charitable organizations of your choice at any time. As your partner and steward, CFSA can assist you in making your philanthropic goals a reality by providing a framework when thinking about opening a DAF.

CFSA is delighted to welcome Jennifer Jones, a former CFSA Advancement Officer, as Director of Donor Services and Development. In her new role, Jennifer will be responsible for leading CFSA’s efforts to serve our number one asset, our donors. In addition, she will work with the Director of Gift Planning, Mary Louise Luna, to help individuals, families and nonprofits build philanthropic legacies now and forever. Jennifer brings more than two decades of experience as a nonprofit leader focused on development and growth.

She has worked in the community foundation sector for approximately ten years, first at CFSA and then at Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation as the Director of Donor Engagement. Previous to her community foundation experience, Jennifer had a successful career with the American Lung Association of Arizona, serving first as a Program Director and later as the Executive Director of the Southern Arizona branch. Most recently, she was working as a consultant to nonprofit organizations in the St. Louis area. Jennifer is a member of the Association of Fundraising (AFP).

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Health Education from the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
