The Hillsboro Lighthouse, featured in this report, is an iconic Broward County landmark and an enduring symbol of steadfast public service. For more than a century, this BOLD beacon has protected and inspired those who call Broward home.

A MESSAGE ABOUT OUR BOLD IMPACT AND BRIGHT FUTURE What a joy it is to look back on a year of new initiatives and BOLD philanthropy that create life-changing impacts today and shape a brighter future for us all. During a year of big challenges – from the ever-changing pandemic to the ongoing push for racial equity – the Community Foundation of Broward has achieved record-level grantmaking to make life better in Broward. Thanks to our dedicated Fundholders, we are targeting critical support on innovative ways to help residents overcome hurdles. And we are investing in opportunities to make Broward a more vibrant community for generations to come. For example, we launched the $1 million BE BOLD Prize to jump-start career opportunities in neighborhoods disproportionately affected by lingering unemployment. To inspire awareness and encourage social justice solutions, we are supporting engaging arts initiatives – including performances, gallery exhibitions, podcasts, workshops, festivals and more – that break through barriers and help build a better community. In addition, our eye-opening special report entitled “Untapped Potential” identified the strengths, deficiencies and true potential of local philanthropy. And to tap that potential, the BE BOLD Leadership Campaign is gaining momentum with nearly $200 million in endowed resources raised to tackle Broward’s growing needs. With the support of BOLD donors who partner with us for their philanthropy, there’s no limit to what the Community Foundation can achieve for the place we call home.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW

24

As the size and scope of the Foundation have grown, so has the sophistication of our financial systems and internal controls. Clear responsibilities, independent decision making and separation of duties are some of the key parts that make the Foundation an outstanding fiduciary.

T H E B OA R D O F D I R E C T O R S is a fiduciary and approves and monitors the operational and grant budgets of the Foundation through monthly financial reports. The Board has complete oversight of the management of investments.

T H E I N V E S T M E N T C O N S U LTA N T monitors each investment manager firm’s performance relative to their benchmark and peer universe. If returns are outside acceptable levels or structural change, such as manager turnover or if style drift occurs, a comprehensive review is triggered. Without confidence in a stronger future performance, the investment consultant suggests a replacement investment manager.

T H E F O U N DAT I O N S TA F F provides comprehensive, accurate and timely back-office support. All investment activity including income, expense, realized and unrealized gain activity is allocated on a Fund level basis. All investment statements are compared to reports prepared by the investment consultant, and monthly financial reports are provided to the Board of Directors.

THE INDEPENDENT INVESTMENT C O M M I T T E E comprised of highly experienced business and financial leaders from the community, undertake quarterly performance reviews to monitor the portfolio and report back to our Board of Directors.

T H E AU D I T C O M M I T T E E reviews the Foundation’s systems of internal controls regarding finance, accounting and legal compliance. Again this year, the auditors reported the Foundation has outstanding internal controls and financial practices.
