BOLD PARTNERSHIPS
We are excited to share this annual look at how the Community Foundation of Broward partners with local philanthropists to make life better in the place we call home.
On the front and back covers you can see evidence of local philanthropy’s BOLD impact. Amid photos of smiling donors and dedicated Community Foundation team members you will find a ribbon cutting for a new community center, construction of affordably priced homes, training to launch culinary careers as well as examples of our support for animal rescue, the arts, Broward’s youth and more.
This collage of life-changing local impact is just a sampling of the ways we tackle our mission: to transform our community through focused leadership that fosters collaboration, builds endowment, advances equity and connects people who care to causes that matter.
Turn the page to learn more about the power of endowment, the exciting momentum of the BE BOLD Leadership Campaign ($250 million and growing!) and the many benefits of becoming a Community Foundation Fundholder.
Thank you to everyone who partners with us – donors, nonprofits, professional advisors and community leaders alike – to help our community achieve its full potential. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for Broward.

IMPACT IN ACTION
The Community Foundation’s BOLD leadership and grantmaking forge dynamic community collaborations and support innovative opportunities to tackle big challenges. Here are a few examples of how we partner with dedicated philanthropists to shape a brighter future for Broward:
$13.4M in fiscal year 2022 grants
CANCER-FIGHTING SUPPORT
Nearly $1 million over three years from our new cancer research grants will help cancer patients get better access to groundbreaking clinical trials, close to home, through Broward Health, Florida International University and the Memorial Cancer Institute.
NEW NONPROFIT CENTER
The Community Foundation’s newly created Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence, led by Director Cathy Brown, will serve as a goto resource for training, grants and other tools to nurture and strengthen the nonprofits that play such a critical role in the lives of Broward residents.
STRENGTHENING SENIORS’ SAFETY NET
Outreach and activities to break through senior isolation are getting a boost thanks to $500,000+ in new “Dignity in Aging” grants from the Community Foundation’s collaboration with United Way of Broward County and The Frederick A. Deluca Foundation.
‘ECO HUB’ SUPPORTS ENVIRONMENT
The Community Foundation committed more than $600,000 to champion environmental efforts, including creating the new Broward Eco Hub for Resiliency Education, anchored at the Museum of Discovery and Science, to raise awareness about climate change preparedness.
$2M MARY PORTER GRANTS
Two $1 million grants, made possible by the Mary N. Porter Legacy Fund, are expanding local mental health facilities at Henderson Behavioral Health’s new crisis stabilization center and supporting the completion of the new L.A. Lee YMCA / Mizell Community Center.
NATURAL DISASTER AID
From another devastating earthquake in Haiti to tornadoes ravaging eight states, including hard-hit Kentucky, the Community Foundation connected our Fundholders to trustworthy opportunities to help those who needed it most.
‘HELP THE HELPERS’
More than 7,500 nonprofit workers leading pandemic response received gift cards, meals and other rewards through our collaboration with United Way, the Children’s Services Council, The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation, Health Foundation of South Florida and The Jim Moran Foundation.
FIRST RESPONDERS SUPPORT
A new scholarship fund, created by the Broward County Firefighters Benevolent Fund, will fuel new careers for aspiring firefighters, nurses, and other first responders.
HELP FOR UKRAINE
In response to the heartbreaking crisis in Ukraine, our Fundholders stepped up with more than $100,000 in donations to support people in need through aid opportunities vetted by the Community Foundation.
SUPPORT FOR ANIMALS
Our two-year, $315,000+ commitment for Animal Welfare grants boosts pet adoptions, provides free food and veterinarian care, supports wildlife rescue and much more.
“Giving back has always been one of our family’s core values. The Community Foundation team comes to us with expertly selected opportunities to make a difference on issues we care about. They also measure the impact created by our support, making sure our philanthropy is truly effective.”
NEIGHBORHOOD LISTENING TOUR
The Community Foundation’s 12 “listening tour” gatherings in neighborhoods across Broward promoted more community engagement, broadened our understanding of local challenges and helped us spread the word about the resources the Community Foundation offers.
RACIAL JUSTICE, EQUITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
Injustice and prejudice should have no place in our community. Everyone who calls Broward home should feel welcome and have a real opportunity to achieve success.
MEALS FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS
To remind health care workers how grateful we are for getting us through a pandemic, we teamed up with Offerdahl’s Hand-Off Foundation to provide more than 2,000 delicious, free meals to employees at hospitals, clinics and other front-line health facilities.
The Community Foundation of Broward is committed to providing local leadership to push for long-overdue changes. Support for Racial Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion is one of the critical focus areas where we target our leadership and grantmaking to empower our community to reach its full potential. Here are a few examples of our ongoing impact:
DIVERSITY, EQUITY WORKSHOPS
FIGHTING HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Sigrid McCawley, lead attorney on behalf of victims in the Jeffrey Epstein sex-trafficking case, shared her insights during our virtual “Food for Thought” event to raise awareness about human trafficking.
Teamed with the Children’s Services Council to host a series of racial equity training webinars for our Board and more than 200 participants from Broward Workshop, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance and other Broward civic organizations and nonprofits.
JUSTICE, DIVERSITY INCLUSION
ARTS & SOCIAL JUSTICE
Awarded nearly $1 million in arts and social justice grants since 2021 to support opportunities for the arts to deepen knowledge, promote dialogue and encourage positive change in Broward.
HEALTH EQUITY ANSWERS
Committed $500,000 to launch the South Broward Community Health Hub – a collaboration of 20+ organizations helping residents of underserved neighborhoods access health care, healthy food and more.
LGBTQ SUPPORT
Collaborated with Our Fund Foundation to provide $400,000 in LGBTQ support for seven initiatives to foster equity for Black & Indigenous People of Color.
NEW CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Awarded the $1 million BE BOLD prize to an innovative program to help hundreds of unemployed or underemployed residents jumpstart their careers – with an emphasis on residents disproportionately affected by the pandemic.
“The Community Foundation will not sit on the sidelines during these critical times. We are committed to breaking through barriers to success in Broward, so everyone has a fair chance to succeed.”
NEW NEIGHBORHOOD GRANTS
Provided $237,500 in a new “Small Grants” program to make it easier for small, grassroots nonprofits – often serving critical roles in minority neighborhoods – to get resources to quickly deliver services that help residents and enrich our community.
Vice President Sheri Brown Grosvenor, who leads the Racial Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Task Force

EXAMPLES OF IMPACT
HELPING BROWARD BOUNCE BACK
The Jerry Taylor & Nancy Bryant Fund deployed $1 million in muchneeded support for food, rent assistance, emergency household repairs, workforce development, scholarships and much more.
LEGACY OF SUPPORT
Jerry Taylor and Nancy Bryant wanted to help people struggling with the pandemic’s economic repercussions. They turned to their Charitable Fund Manager, Amanda Kah, to get their support where it was needed the most.
INNOVATIVE GIVING
“We knew people were struggling and needed help, but we didn’t know how to reach them. So, we called Amanda,” Nancy said. “She brought these great programs to our attention. That’s the focus that we needed.”
Teri Stout partnered with the Community Foundation to create the Blayne Stout AIDS Fund – an endowed charitable fund honoring her son Blayne, who died of AIDS in 1991, when he was three.
Twin sisters Hadley and Delaney Robertson found an innovative way to turn a big obstacle into a life-changing opportunity for people, like them, who deal with scoliosis.
They developed BraceTrack, an app that makes it easier for people with scoliosis to keep track of how long they need to wear back braces. They also launched a fundraising initiative and teamed with the Community Foundation to create the Brace for Impact Fund, which helps buy braces for people in need.
“The involvement of the Community Foundation added instant credibility to the idea and their connections allowed Brace For Impact to grow much faster than otherwise would have been possible,” Hadley Robertson said.
Teri, who learned she was HIV positive when she was pregnant with Blayne, knew she would need a partner to carry on her son’s legacy. Teri died of complications from AIDS almost four years after Blayne. Nearly three decades later, grants in Blayne’s name continue to help provide treatment and support for children with AIDS.
“It is so wonderful to see that Blayne and Teri are still making a difference so many years after their passing,” said Jacqueline Bammert, Teri Stout’s niece and Blayne’s cousin. “I know my aunt would be so happy to know that this important work is continuing.”
BOLD MOMENTUM
The BE BOLD Leadership Campaign hit the $250 million milestone in 2022, gaining momentum among people who love Broward and want to invest in a brighter future for our community.
In 2018, we launched this important movement to raise $500 million and build an endowment to keep pace with our community’s fast-growing needs. We are halfway to our ambitious goal, thanks to new gifts and planned gifts from philanthropists stepping up for the community they love.
BOLD leaders partner with the Community Foundation to create charitable funds that fuel innovative solutions today and provide sustainable resources to help our community forever.
Through a gift today or a planned gift commitment, you can create a charitable fund and enlist the Community Foundation as your philanthropy partner. We shepherd your fund, identify the best grantmaking opportunities and amplify your impact by pooling resources to tackle big challenges. Through the power of endowment, we ensure your BOLD impact never ends.
Together, we can make life even better in Broward. Are you ready to BE BOLD?
love having the Community Foundation to steward our charitable fund and maximize the impact of our philanthropy. They do the legwork, we have peace of mind knowing they will carry on our community support for generations to come.”

POWER OF ENDOWMENT
Through the power of endowment, your charitable gift today creates a BOLD impact that lasts forever.
When you partner with the Community Foundation to establish an endowed charitable fund, your gift is carefully invested over time. Earnings from your gift add to your fund and produce Community Foundation grants that tackle your charitable priorities.
As we shepherd and grow your endowed fund, the earnings from your initial gift become a permanent source of community support. For generations to come, your endowed fund will be a sustainable resource that makes Broward a better place to call home.
HOW AN ENDOWED GIFT OF $100,000 CAN GROW*
In one year, your fund balance is $100,500 and produces $5,000 in grants.
(*Assumes a 5% annual granting payout, 1.5% administration fees and a net 7% investment rate of return.)
In 15 years, your fund balance is $107,768 and has produced more than $77,600 in grants.
93%
of the value of our charitable funds is endowed
In 50 years, your fund balance reaches $128,323, has produced more than $283,200 in grants and keeps growing.
endowment story
In 2008, Mary Mackenzie’s $12.1 million estate gift established an endowed, charitable fund at the Community Foundation. Mary trusted the Community Foundation to shepherd her fund and identify innovative opportunities for her support to transform the community. By establishing an unrestricted fund, Mary ensured that the Community Foundation could use her support to tackle new challenges and adapt to changing times.
Each year, Mary’s fund delivers more than $730,000 in grants to make life better in Broward. Mary’s impact includes support for groundbreaking classroom programs, teacher training and parental education and
other innovative opportunities to help Broward students succeed.
Over time, Mary’s endowed fund has generated 272 total grants totaling nearly $9 million in critical community support. In 2022, Mary’s endowed fund balance at the Community Foundation was $12.8 million – more than her initial gift amount and able to keep growing, through the power of endowment.
2022: Mary Mackenzie’s endowed charitable fund balance is $12.8M
To Date: 272 grants awarded TOTALING NEARLY $9M
2008: Mary Mackenzie’s endowed charitable fund created with $12.1M gift
“Building an endowment is not just for today, it’s forever.
… Converting my private foundation to an endowed fund at the Community Foundation of Broward was the best decision I ever made.”

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW
As the size and scope of the Foundation have grown, so has the sophistication of our financial systems and internal controls. Clear responsibilities, independent decision making and separation of duties are some of the key parts that make the Foundation an outstanding fiduciary.
THE INDEPENDENT INVESTMENT CONSULTANT performs due diligence and analysis on investments, compiles data trends, provides investment recommendations and participates in quarterly meetings with the investment committee.
THE INVESTMENT COMMITTEE is comprised of career investment professionals and highly experienced business leaders from the community. They set investment objectives and undertake quarterly performance reviews to monitor the portfolio and report back to our Board of Directors.
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS is a fiduciary and approves and monitors the operational and grant budgets of the Foundation through monthly financial reports. The Board has complete oversight of the management of investments.
THE FOUNDATION STAFF provides comprehensive, accurate and timely back-office support. All investment activity including income, expense, realized and unrealized gain activity is allocated on a Fund level basis. All investment statements are compared to reports prepared by the investment consultant, and monthly financial reports are provided to the Board of Directors.
THE AUDIT COMMITTEE reviews the Foundation’s systems of internal controls regarding finance, accounting and legal compliance. Again this year, the auditors reported the Foundation has outstanding internal controls and financial practices.
