By Mark McLaughlin It’s Mid-August and the annual Reno Air Races are just around the corner, promising aviation thrills and hitting speeds in excess of 500 miles per hour. Every year Reno’s Stead Field hosts the world’s longest running air race competition where thousands come to admire military and historic aircraft, as well as jaw dropping aerobatic exhibitions.
While watching these fine-tuned planes pivot and zoom through their paces, it is easy to forget that less than 100 years ago, no one had ever seen a plane in Nevada.

The invention of the airplane was one of those benchmark advances in technology that dramatically improved the lives of those living in the Far West, where wide open spaces and remote locations made for a lonely life. The first breakthrough came when a couple of promoters thought of using young men and fast horses to deliver letters and communication to California and Nevada communities. The Pony Express was in business for less than 19 months starting in 1860, when riders relayed their satchel of letters in an operation that could move mail nearly 2,000 miles in just 10 days. However, when the transcontinental telegraph was completed in October 1861, the Pony Express died a quick death. The telegraph could send messages through wires in the blink of an eye, but for the average person it was expensive and letters were still the standard method for communicating over distance. The next breakthrough came less than a decade later when Central Pacific and Union Pacific completed the first transcontinental railroad across the United States. The two

Northwoods Tahoe railroad companies raced each other to lay as much track as possible to earn lucrative government payments and federal land grants. Central Pacific worked east from California and Union Pacific pushed west. The two finally met in Utah in May 1869. Imagine the difference the transcontinental railroad made for people of that time. Before the railroad, many California-bound immigrants traveled in covered wagons, leaving the western frontier (Missouri River) in spring with the hope of reaching the Pacific Coast before winter snow in the Sierra closed the road. It was a long journey of 2,000 miles that could take four to five months, replete with multiple dangers that included accidents, disease, Indian attack and equipment breakdown. (Commercial stagecoaches could deliver you to the West much quicker during the summer months, but you were limited in what you could bring with you and it was a bumpy, dusty ride.) Once the railroad was completed, however, someone in New York City could decide in early December that they wanted to spend Christmas in San Francisco. They could board a train and ride in safety and relative luxury through stormy weather, enjoying food and wine while gazing at the passing scenery. The transcontinental railroad was a game changer when it came to crosscountry transportation in America.
Despite the development of railroad lines in the United States, efficient and easy travel in the Sierra was still a challenge even after 1900. The next breakthrough came in December 1903 when the Wright brothers made the first successful flight in a powered airplane at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The news was broadcast around the country, but years would go by before anyone in Truckee or rural Nevada would see a plane. Despite a few attempts, the early airplanes were incapable of flying over the ridgeline of the Sierra. One of the first to try was a well-publicized flight by Robert Fowler in 1911, but his primitive, underpowered airplane could not surmount the range. In April 1916, a New York millionaire attempted a transcontinental flight from San Diego to New York, transiting through Las Vegas. He crashed 125 miles into his flight, but the effort was front-page news in Nevada. Initially, air travel was too expensive and complex for individual entrepreneurs. As with railroad and highway transportation, it would take the power and resources of the federal government to develop aviation. During World War I (1914-1918), the Army Air Service established 69 airfields across the U.S., but none in Nevada. These bases became part of a nationwide network of airways

Despite the obstacles, airmail pilots in the West developed a fairly safe operation and during the first three years, only seven pilots died in the western sector, a rate comparable to other sectors of the country at that time. On Sept. 8, 1920, a West Coast-bound airmail plane took off from New Jersey on the first leg of the new transcontinental route. Pilots relayed the 400 pounds of mail to each other much like a hi-tech version of the earlier Pony Express mail delivery system. Planes could not fly at night, but the mail still arrived in San Francisco in four days. The coast-to-coast delivery had taken nearly 83 hours, more than the projected 54 hours for the trip, but the media loved it. One aviation booster magazine, the Aerial Age Weekly wrote, “September 8 will go down in history as the great day when the epoch making event, the first trip of the transcontinental aerial mail, took place.”
Vast expanses of alkali desert and only isolated, remote settlements, made the flight over Utah and Nevada daunting. Without location transmitters or radios, it was nearly impossible to find a pilot who may have crash-landed in the vast expanse of Nevada. To give themselves a chance, pilots followed the tracks of the transcontinental railroad and the Lincoln Highway.
Continued from page 5 and landing fields that permitted rapid deployment of military units across the country. During WWI, primitive biplanes made of wood and canvas with top speeds of 100 mph were outfitted with machine guns and converted into offensive weapons. More than 125,000 aircraft were produced during the war. The adaptation of the airplane as a military weapon rapidly accelerated its technological development. Following the war, the Army Air Service worked with civilian leaders to develop municipal airports. The Army Air Service pioneered transcontinental air routes throughout the West. In 1919, three U.S. Army planes with 90 horsepower engines successfully crossed the Sierra from Sacramento to Reno. They flew over Donner Pass where a wagon train of emigrants had struggled and died in deep snow less than 80 years before. Once the air route between Reno and San Francisco was established, flights over the Sierra became almost “routine”. Another big step occurred that year when a military pilot flew from New York to San Francisco in just three days. Nevada newspaper editors began to envision regular air routes across the Silver State, which would dramatically reduce traveling times by automobile. The successful flights over the Sierra near Donner Pass opened the door to aviation’s first practical use which was airmail. On May 15, 1918, the U.S. Postal Service inaugurated airmail service between New York City and Washington, D.C. Western bankers and other business leaders wanted the eastern network linked to the western states, in part to help reduce the float time of checks moving across the country. Postal officials laid out a transcontinental air mail route between San Francisco and New York via Reno, Elko, Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, Omaha, Chicago and Pittsburgh.
Flying over the Great Basin was one of the most treacherous portions of the journey, with serious problems related to climate, geography and weather.

Front Door If replacing the front door isn’t necessary, adding a fresh coat of paint is a simple way to refresh your home’s exterior. You can take your “dated” door and make it modern again with a bold, on-trend color.
Composite Decking
Another exterior remodeling project with a high ROI (62.1%), according to the report, is replacing your home’s existing wood deck with composite decking. An option like Zuri Premium Decking combines the natural beauty and warmth of exotic hardwood with the durability and low-maintenance requirements of PVC (cellular polyvinyl chloride), which resists stains, scratches, fading and moisture, for a deck that will last for years with minimal upkeep.
Take it one step further by adding artistic house numbers, a new light fixture or a door knocker in an unexpected shape for inexpensive pops of style. Vinyl Siding Updating your home’s exterior with vinyl siding yields a 67.2% return upon sale, according to the report. When considering new siding, look for high-quality, low-maintenance materials. Depending on where you live, insulated vinyl siding can add additional protection against the elements, as well as increased energy efficiency. While function is important, don’t be afraid to make bold choices with color, texture, different profiles and contrasting trim to make a true statement with your home’s exterior. For example, Westlake Royal Building Products offers a wide range of vinyl siding options in the latest shades, including adding five on-trend colors to its Royal Siding and Exterior Portfolio lines. Inspired by colors found in nature, the gray, blue-gray, brown and green tones reflect the latest trends in modern exterior home design. Both lines feature patented color protection technology to resist fading, which is especially important for darker shades.
Give your front porch an instant facelift by wrapping your existing columns with PVC wraps. This is an easy way to achieve a cleaner and more modern, updated look. Resistant to moisture, PVC column wraps prevent issues found in traditional wood columns, such as warping, rotting and insect damage. Available in a variety of readyto-install styles, they can also be painted to complement your home’s exterior color palette.
Column Wraps
Shutters Adding or replacing shutters is another easy way to add a bit of flair and can be a key finishing touch in creating the perfect exterior. With the potential to play beautifully alongside windows and siding as well architectural style and surrounding landscaping, it’s important to make thoughtful choices and install them properly to ensure they look and function as designed.

Your home’s exterior can say a lot about you and your family while also making a first impression on guests (and potential buyers). Because of the impact curb appeal has on the amount prospective buyers are willing to spend on a home, it’s important for homeowners to look beyond simply choosing the right siding color and consider different siding materials and profiles, adding accents like stone veneer and researching other exterior upgrades that can both increase beauty and deliver performance over time. In fact, exterior remodeling projects typically top the list of projects that add the most resale value to homes.
According to Remodeling’s 2022 Cost vs. Value Report, nine of the top 10 projects delivering the best return on cost were exterior renovations. If you’re looking to sell or just want to increase the overall value of your home, consider these high-ROI exterior upgrades from the experts at Westlake Royal Building Products that can improve aesthetics and increase resale value.

The Genoa “Candy Dance” originated in 1919 as an effort to raise money to pur chase street lights for the small, but enter prising community of Genoa, Nevada’s first settlement. Lillian Virgin Finnegan, daughter of then prominent Judge Daniel Webster Virgin, suggested the idea of a dance and making candy to pass around during the dance as an incentive for a good “turnout” of couples. The Genoa community did raise the needed funds for streetlights, but realized the monthly electric bill had to be paid. The candy makers were then called upon each year to help promote the “Candy Dance” and pay a year’s worth of electricity for the streetlights throughout the town. This annual event became the “Big Event of the Season.” Couples came from Reno, Carson City, Minden, Gard nerville and surrounding areas to join in the evening’s fun. The Arts & Crafts Faire was added in the 1970s, and later became a two-day event. The first Faire was held on the front lawn of a private residence in Sierra Shadows on Genoa Lane with twelve vendors. A few years later the popular Faire was moved to the Mormon Station Historic State Monument grounds. Expanding proved necessary and now Faire exhibitors are also found along a major portion of the downtown area. With all the people visiting the Faire these days, the streets in and out of Genoa are temporarily closed during the day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Depending on what you’re looking to achieve with your night sky viewing, you may want to have different items with you. Having a romantic rendezvous? A night of scien tific interest? Well, whatever you’re into you can plan ac cordingly by making a checklist for your night out.
If there is one thing that is universally acknowledged to make anyone appreciate the beauty of nature, it’s star gazing and night sky viewing. Being a small part of some thing so stunning, feeling small but in a good way…it’s humbling and exhilarating. We will explain the how-to’s of optimal stargazing: when to go, what to bring, what to expect to see, and when to see certain celestial phenomena in the remainder of 2022 If you have your heart set on seeing certain types of phenomena, the first step is knowing when they will be occurring. Most of these will even be visible to the naked eye or with just a pair of binoculars! Here are a few of the options to check out later this year.
12August2022 Northwoods Tahoe Continued on Page 14
VIEWING THE NIGHT SKY
• September 2022: There will be some planetary action happening on Sept 26, with Jupiter coming into peri helic opposition with Earth. It’ll be the closest Jupiter has been to Earth since 1963.
• The nights before and after each new moon, as there will be minimal light pollution from the moon, or real ly, any time the moon is on a smaller phase will also work.
• Fall, Winter, and Spring will generally be better viewing seasons to go out and stargaze but may be colder temperatures.
• November 2022: You will be able to see a full Lunar eclipse on the 8th, the second one of the year. It’ll only be a partial showing on the West coast but still im pressive!
What Items to Bring with You
Best Time to Stargaze Believe it or not, there is an ideal timeframe during the nights to go out and stargaze! Follow these tips for the best viewing possible.
• December 2022: The 13th-14th of December will be the Geminids Meteor Shower. This shower gets its name from the fact that the meteors look like they’re erupting from the Gemini constellation. Under ideal conditions, you could expect to see up to 160 meteors per hour during this highly anticipated celestial event. You will also be able to spot the year’s last-quarter waxing moon during this same time. A nice two-for-one deal.
• After the sun has set far enough that you don’t have any light pollution. (so, after twilight).
WWW.TAHOEWEATHERCAM.COM We Pay Particular Attention to Plants & Pets! commercial & residential Pest Control Joe De OwnerCasper (530) 587-5743 (775) www.paragonpestcontrol.biz240-0462cell Call for a solution to your pest problems
• Telescopes: What type of telescope you bring will depend on the level of viewing you want. There are four types to choose from: reflectors, refractors, hybrids, and Dobsonian. Refractors are the most com mon telescope and are great for a gazer on the go. Reflectors are the ideal best-value telescope and use a mirror to gather and focus light from the stars.
Hybrids (self-explanatory) are great for getting the best of both reflector and refractor benefits. Dobsonian telescopes are ideal for those wanting to do some deep sky viewing, like galaxies and nebulae.
• A romantic evening of night sky gazing: same as the above, but maybe a slightly nicer picnic spread. These are just “what to bring” basics. In this next section we’ll be getting into more detail on the tech you may want to bring. Top Tech to Have on Hand Now that you know the various stuff to bring with you, let’s talk tech. We’re going to cover what kind of apps to use, telescopes or bin oculars.•Stargazing apps: These apps can be extremely useful, especially for beginners. With one of these apps, you basically hold the night sky in your hands! They will usually map out all of the planets, constellations, etc. by using GPS. This means that you can hold your phone up to the sky and see where each object is in detail without needing a telescope. Pros will use these apps along with their telescopes as a helpful locating tool.
14August2022 Northwoods Tahoe
• For a fun night with friends: blankets, snacks, drinks, your eyes ready to embrace something new, some type of telescope or binocular, a red flashlight for while your eyes adapt to the dark, a toolbox just in case, and something to wipe down your lenses.
Continued from Page 12
Neowise Comet 2020
• Top apps to use: SkySafari ($40, but there’s a free version too), Stellarium ($14, or a free version), Star Walk ($3, also a free version), SkyView ($2, also a free version). There are plenty of others, but these are some of the best.
• Binoculars: Choosing a pair of binoculars is not as tedious as a telescope because these are the in-between stage for the stars and planets you can see with the naked eye and what you can see with a telescope. A good pair of binoculars can get you a slightly tighter view before pulling out the telescope.
• Star charts: These you can have on paper or on your laptop, but if you decide to have them on your laptop then you’ll need to remember to put a red filter over your screen to stop the light pollution. These charts will give an idea of the locations to view in the night sky.
What you bring with you for stargazing will depend on the level of viewing you wish to reach. Using stargazing apps will be a great bonus for pros and beginners. Know what your options are and pack your bags with whatever you think you may need for the night. The biggest thing to remember is that you will need to do your research regarding your location in order to find out the best astrological objects and events to view. No matter where you are or what level of stargazer you are, if you put in the effort, you can see something truly beautiful in the night sky! Go out and enjoy the night.
