MISTRESS OF VIKINGSHOLM By Philip I. Earl Lora Josephine Knight was born in Galena, Illinois in 1864, one of a family of four daughters and one son. Her father, Edward A. Small, was a corporate lawyer who had large industrial and railroad interests. In 1886, Lora married James Moore, one of her father’s partners. They traveled extensively, making many trips to California. In 1916, they purchased a home in Montecito, a suburb of Santa Barbara, but sadly, James Moore died shortly thereafter. She married Harry French Knight, a St. Louis stockbroker in 1922,

but was divorced three years later. Lora and her first husband had had a summer home, Wychwood, at Observatory Point on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Being happy there, in 1928, she purchased the Vikingsholm property from the William Henry Armstrong estate. Californians familiar with the history of Lake Tahoe recall Lora as the mistress of Vikingsholm, the Scandinavian-style castle which has graced Emerald Bay since 1930. She also had a home in Reno, Nevada

When planning her home in Lake Tahoe, Lora decided that the fjord-like character of Emerald Bay demanded an architectural masterwork reflecting the culture of Norway, Denmark and Sweden and commissioned Lenart Palme, a Swedish architect and a nephew by marriage, to design the structure.

She had been impressed with a Nordic home he had designed for himself and his family in Rye, New York, and they traveled to Scandinavia in the summer of 1928 to gather ideas. They visited 11th century wooden churches in Norway, stone castles in southern Sweden, peasant villages in Denmark and ancient structures in Finland. Palme did extensive photo work and specific features of the buildings later became part of the Vikingsholm plan. The interior of Vikingsholm also had a Scandinavian theme. The delicate paintings on the ceiling of the living room and the walls of the library and the morning room resembled those found in peasant homes. Several intricately carved “dragon” beams were modeled after those originally hung in Viking castles and corner fireplaces, a feature of Nordic interior design, were located throughout Vikingsholm. Mrs. Knight also purchased a number of antiques in the course of the trip, but government officials did not allow her to

She was also concerned with the natural environment and instructed her architect to design Vikingsholm around the existing trees, a task he once called “the trickiest I have had to solve either abroad or in these United States”. She also had a teahouse constructed Continued on Page 6

Tahoe Food Hub Moves to the Truckee Airport

MWA Architects, Bassets Flooring, Nevada Western Supply, Truckee Tahoe Lumber, Summit Refrigeration, Rice Team Mortgage, Dan Goddard Construction and New Moon Natural Foods.”

Tahoe Food Hub is moving their Farm Shop and warehouse to the Truckee-Tahoe Airport. The Farm Shop will open to the public on May 28, 2019 in its new location at 12116 Chandelle Way, Unit D-1, next to the Truckee Roundhouse. With the support of the Truckee-Tahoe community, Tahoe Food Hub raised over $80,000 through their Make the Move fund drive. Those funds helped transform one of the warehouses at the Truckee Airport into a hub for local food distribution. Tahoe Food Hub would like to give a big thanks to the Truckee-Tahoe Airport who has been a critical partner in making this dream a reality and bringing this opportunity to Truckee. “We have always said, it will take a community to build a food system and this fundraising effort truly demonstrated that,” says Susie Sutphin, Executive Director. “We want to thank all the people who made donations over the past year and participated in our fundraising events. And we would like to especially thank all the businesses who donated their in-kind services to build-out the new warehouse: Kelly Brothers Painting,

and pick-up their customized local food box at the Farm Shop. Check out taheofoodhub. org for more information and sign-up for their newsletter to stay ahead of workshops and events throughout the year. Stop by for the Grand Opening on Tuesday, May 28 from 11 AM to 7 PM and see the NEW warehouse and Farm Shop.

Tahoe Food Hub is celebrating its 6th year. For four years, Tahoe Food Hub (TFH) called the Casa Adina Building, at the bottom of Alpine Meadows Road, home. It is bittersweet to leave but growing from a 1,200 sf. warehouse to 4,000 sf. will increase TFH’s capacity to support more farms and bring more local food to Tahoe.

Tahoe Food Hub is a 501(c)-3, non-profit organization. Our mission is to galvanize our community to build a regional, sustainable and equitable food system. We are supporting regenerative agriculture and addressing local food access challenges at a systems level by creating a local food system for the Lake Tahoe/Reno area. A local food system addresses the needs of diversified, family farms that are looking for fair market opportunities while increasing access to local food for our mountain community. Tahoe Food Hub still has a $30,000 funding gap to cover the final move and build-out expenses. If you are interested in donating, please visit tahoefoodhub.org.

With a larger, more centralized location, the Farm Shop will be open more than in its previous location. It will be open five days a week: Tuesday to Friday from 11 AM to 7 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM. The Farm Shop will feature local produce from more than 40 farms and ranches within 150 miles of North Lake Tahoe. While the Farm Shop only carries produce that is in season for Northern California, all year long there are pasture-raised eggs, grass-finished meats and a variety of specialty products from olive oils and sauces, to dairy and bread. As an added convenience, TFH will launch its Harvest-to-Order program, an online farmers’ market. Consumers can shop online

Mistress of Vikingsholm Continued from Page 3 on Fannette Island in the middle of Emerald Bay and a boathouse for the Valkyrie, a mahogany cabin cruiser. She had several docks built and because electric lines were just reaching Lake Tahoe at the time of the construction of Vikingsholm, Palme installed electrical fixtures of Nordic design.

Vikingsholm represents a lavish, graceful period in the history of Lake Tahoe, a relaxed, unhurried time. Mrs. Knight enjoyed entertaining during the summer months when she was in residence and her guests also swam, hiked, boated, fished and took the Valkyrie to Tahoe Tavern where they could dance, bowl or go to the movies.

Mrs. Knight suffered a sudden stroke on the afternoon of June 26, 1945 and died later that evening. Here estate was valued at $3,000,000 at that time, most of which was willed to family and friends. There were also bequests to Christian Science churches and charities, including $10,000 to the church in Reno. Vikingsholm, valued at $300,000, was purchased by Harvey West of Placerville as a hunting lodge. There was a movement, for a time, to tear it down since it was not a natural feature of the environment. Officials of the “Save the Redwoods League” and the California State Park Commission stepped in to save the castle, however, and the California Legislature appropriated the funds to purchase the structure in 1953. Today, Mrs. Knight’s grand structure can be reached by a mile-long trail down from Highway 89 or by boat. There is a boat camp on the site and tours of the castle are conducted by park guides in the summer and fall.

HOA Week Skip Daum President, HOALaws.com Registered Legislative Advocate Since 1974 A spate of HOA bills moved along in the Senate and Assembly this week and plenty of amendments were taken to clarify some language and to ameliorate the concerns of opponents. I attend these hearings in order to see who is testifying for and against the bills, and why. Let’s start with the HOA election bills.

AB 323 (Wieckowski)… Numerous Changes to HOA Election Rules Senator Bob Wieckowski’s SB 323 is a repeat of two similar bills from last session which were vetoed by Governor Brown, and is again sponsored by the Center for California Homeowner Association Law which is based in the SF Bay area. As amended May 1, it: (1) Requires retention of association election materials including a voter list containing name, parcel number, and envelopes signed by the voters. The association shall make the list available to any member wishing to verify the accuracy

of the voter’s information at least 30 days before the ballots are distributed. A voter’s signature on the outside return envelope may be inspected but may not be copied; this removed concerns about a voter’s privacy. (2) Candidates for election must be members of the HOA but the association may disqualify them if they haven’t been members for at least one year. (3) Candidates may not be felons that were convicted in any state or country within the last 20 years. (4) Candidates must be current in the payment of assessments, excepting fines and late fees, and those being disputed or contained in a payment plan. (5) Multiple owners of one parcel may not be candidates. (6) The HOA’s election rules may not be amended less than 90 days prior to the election. (7) General notice of nomination deadlines and the election date is to be no less than 30 days prior. As of the hearing date these are the organizations favoring and opposing SB 323, but expect further amendments in the Assembly! SUPPORT: (Verified 5/1/19)

SB 670 and SB 671 (FRIEDMAN)… ADUs and JADUs 670 would make the governing documents of an HOA void and unenforceable if they prohibit the construction of an Accessory Dwelling Unit or Junior ADU on a lot zoned for single-family. State law allows local governments to adopt standards for the minimum and maximum size of an attached or detached ADU, but those standards cannot prevent the installation of at least one ADU or JADU. For an ADU that requires a separate utility connection, the connection or capacity charge must be proportional to burden of the ADU based on the size of the ADU or number of plumbing fixtures. State law also prohibits a local government from

671 would require cities and counties to develop a plan that incentivizes and promotes the creation of ADUs that can be offered at affordable rent for very low-, low and moderate income households, in the housing element of the general plan. The bill also requires the Housing and Community Development Agency to develop, by December 31, 2020, a list of existing state grants and financial incentives for operating, administrative, and other expenses in connection with the planning, construction, and operation of an ADU with affordable rent for very low and moderate income households, and post this list on their website. are welcome! As early as the 1840's, a trickle of humanity began the arduous journey toward the great Pacific and the freedom they foresaw in settling there. In the early 1850's, one of the major land routes to California, traversing what we now know as Echo Summit and the Highway 50 corridor, became known as the "Roaring Road". Travel was so heavy, that oftentimes wagon trains were forced to wait for days to have their turn on the road. Waking up before dawn, savoring the rich aromas of coffee boiling, bacon frying, mingled with the clanking of harness, the soft knickers of horses being readied for the day, and the murmurs of the wranglers going about their duties, all draw us back into a lifetime of excitement and anticipation. http://www.hwy50wagontrain. com/pdf/2019-Itinerary.pdf.
