For more than 140 years, railroad crews have battled the Sierra Storm King for control of Donner Pass during heavy winter storms. From long experience, the men who worked “The Hill,” as they call the Sierra portion of the transcontinental railroad, knew that brutal blizzards and lethal avalanches came with the territory. Modern technology has armed the railroad crews with an arsenal of equipment that helps them keep the rails clear, but when it comes to removing exceptionally deep snowdrifts deposited by storms or snowslides, the most important piece of machinery is still the venerable rotary snowplow. Southern Pacific Railroad’s rotary snowplows are the ultimate railroad snow-fighting weapon and during the winter season are stationed on both sides of the range, Roseville, California, and Sparks, Nevada. Most winters are not severe enough to warrant using the rotaries (modern Jordan hydraulic spreaders can move 3,750 tons of snow per minute in a swath 40-foot wide), but when the Storm King assaults the Sierra with relentless snowfall, SP rolls out its mighty rotaries to cut through the overwhelming drifts. First employed to carve out the tracks during the epic winter of 1889-1890, the rotary snowplow was SP’s workhorse in the heavy snowbelt above

5,000 feet in elevation. Largely replaced by the modern snow spreader in the early 1960s, the rotary has saved the day during all of the heavy snow years, including 1937-38, 1951-52, 198283, and many big storms since. A Toronto dentist, J.W. Elliot, designed and patented the first primitive rotary plow in 1869. Dr. Elliot actually built a small hand-operated model of his “Revolving Snow Shovel,” but he was unable to convince anyone to finance its construction. That same year, Pennsylvanian Charles Tierney obtained his own patent for his idea that put a large revolving screw on the front of a railroad flatcar. The turning screw, powered by a steam engine, fed the snow into a fan that would use the airflow to blow it off the tracks, but no railroad company showed any interest in Tierney’s scheme, and he too was forced to abandon his project. During the 1870’s, another half dozen men invented a variety of rotating plows, a few which made it to the prototype stage, but none beyond that. By 1883, Orange Jull, the owner of a flourmill in the small village of Orangeville in Ontario, Canada, had begun developing his own rotary design. His plans required mounting a large, spinning apparatus with fan-like blades on the front of a railroad car that would be powered by one or more locomotives. Unlike many of the other inventors, Jull was a good mechanic and he intended to build a full-scale operating snowplow, not just a crude prototype. He enlisted the help of his friends, John S. and Edward Leslie, two brothers he knew who owned a machine shop in Orangeville. Jull showed the Leslies his rotary design, which employed a sharp cutting wheel that revolved at high speed in front of the spinning fan blades. After the blades cut it up, the snow would be discharged through an opening in the top of Continued on page 4

Continued from page 3 the fan housing. John and Edward Leslie were convinced that Jull’s invention would work and decided to enter into a partnership with him. In 1884 Jull obtained patents for his “Rotary Steam Snow Shovel” in both the United States and Canada, and then assigned the rights to the Leslie brothers who had agreed to pay Jull royalties for any snowplows constructed and sold. The machinists fabricated virtually all the parts in their shop and then assembled it on a flatcar at the Canadian Pacific shops near Toronto. The Canadian Pacific Railroad Company was very interested in Jull’s Rotary Steam Snow Shovel and provided an old locomotive boiler to power the machine. After several experiments clearing snow on side tracks and a bunch of design modifications by the Leslie brothers, the three men felt they were ready to take their invention to market. They mailed a set of drawings to the Cooke Locomotive & Machine Works in Paterson, New Jersey, for an estimate on construction costs and the innovative plow was built during the summer of 1885. Once the Rotary was constructed, it was shipped west to Wyoming for its first true test. Unfortunately, because the cutting wheel and the whirling fan revolved in opposite directions, friction from snow caught inbetween them bogged the machine down. Once again the Leslie brothers solved the problem with a clever single wheel design and the upgraded Rotary was back on track. The newfangled plow was a great success and proved it could cut away snowdrifts to the height of the blade and throw it far from the track, and all while moving forward at a speed

of about five miles per hour. The following summer Jull ordered another rotary from Cooke Locomotive, but this time its fabrication incorporated all of the new improvements improvised by the Leslies. Next to utilize the modified Rotary was Union Pacific RR, who tested it on their line in eastern Oregon during the severe winter of 1885-86. Once again the Rotary Steam Snow Shovel received enthusiastic approval and UP ordered three more. When word spread about the Rotary’s impressive success at removing deep snow, Southern Pacific ordered one to use on its trans-Sierra line between Truckee and Blue Canyon. Described as the ultimate snow fighting machine, demand for the Rotary Snow Shovel soared as more and more railroad companies, both in the U.S. and Europe, decided to add them to their fleet of snow-removal equipment. But trouble was brewing between Orange Jull and John and Edward Leslie. Although the original snowplow had been built under Jull’s basic patent, the Leslies had obtained a dozen additional patents on their improvements to the design, none of which included Orange Jull in the paperwork. Jull had never gained a partnership in the Leslie firm, and now the two brothers were pulling in the bulk of the profits. Ultimately, the patents were legitimate and Jull was squeezed out. The Leslie Rotary was considered a marvel of mechanical genius. Three 600-horsepower engines powered the cutting blade, which in turn was pushed along by several locomotives. The Leslie Rotary weighed nearly 20 tons, which kept it securely on the rails when busting through deep Sierra

drifts. Rotary snowplow Leslie No. 5 arrived in Truckee in December 1887, but due to mild winter seasons, it wasn’t needed until the heavy winter of 1889-90. Incessant storms that year (forty feet of snow fell during December and January) and frequent train derailments shut down the Sierra section of the transcontinental railroad from January 15 to January 31, but the Rotary proved itself indispensable in clearing deep drifts and avalanches from the tracks. To awed onlookers in Truckee, the roaring behemoth seemed invincible. It threw tons of snow hundreds of feet into the air, and residents in nearby houses boarded their windows to keep them from being shattered by the towering plumes. During one test run, a snow plume broke the second-story windows of Truckee’s Whitney Hotel, 250 feet from the tracks. Orange Jull may have lost the rights to his original rotary model, but the jilted inventor didn’t quit. Next he designed and patented a completely different snowplow called the “Jull Centrifugal Snow Excavator” and contracted with a machine company in Philadelphia to build it. Unfortunately, in highly publicized, head-to-head contests between Jull’s Excavator and the Leslie’s Rotary, the 65ton Excavator failed to negotiate turns and consistently derailed. One witness complained that “damned poor crews” were the principle reason for the Excavator’s problems and maybe that was the case because Union Pacific bought the demonstration unit where it cleared track for 60 years. After 1892, Orange Jull was unable to sell any more units and his company went belly-up.

ON-TREND HOME DESIGNS FOR 2022

A home design that blends multiple elements seamlessly can be both inviting and visually interesting. If you’re planning to upgrade your living space in 2022, consider incorporating materials like stone and brick, which bring color, texture and functionality while complementing some of this year’s leading design trends. Settling on a design aesthetic is the first step for most renovation projects, but it can be a challenge for many homeowners. If you’re in need of inspiration for a project on the horizon, consider these 2022 trends from the design experts at Glen-Gery: Warm Colors Look for a shift toward warmer colors like beige, tan, caramel, cocoa and even black. Designers are moving from cool grays to a warmer coffee-inspired palette. The use of warmer colors on structural elements of a home, like brick, stone, siding, doors and shutters, offer visual warmth while making a statement. Textures and Patterns Textures and patterns are popping up in many on-trend designs. Texture can enhance the overall feeling of a space by offering depth and complexity that draws a visitor into the room. The use of texture in a design element, like stone or brick, can provide visual interest and engage the mind with a tactile response that encourages interaction with the environment. Outdoor Inspiration Nature is inspiring an array of design elements this year. You may see this trend emerging through increased use of glass for light and views of nature, as well as continued focus on the versatile and transitional indoor-outdoor spaces that gained momentum during the height of the pandemic. Approaches may vary depending on the homeowner’s style and climate, but examples include larger patios in brick and stone, as well as more functional private patios and porches. Another aspect of this trend is the tendency for homeowners to integrate indoor conveniences such as kitchens, fireplaces, furniture and electronics into their outdoor spaces.

6

Clean Lines This season, designers are creating inviting, comfortable and serene spaces with modern vibes through the use of clean lines in design, materials and furnishings. One trick is integrating elements that transfer light or give an illusion of illumination from a higher sheen, such as glass brick. The play of light and shadows simultaneously blends inspiration from nature with sleek lines and dramatic focal points to evoke a sense of balanced calm and strength. This approach can also come to life through ceiling windows, furnishings and the use of stone, brick and wood on statement walls or accents. Bringing On-Trend Design into Your Home Brick is a versatile design material that fits virtually any trending design. From handmade to glazed bricks and nearly everything in between, you can find building products in a diverse array of colors, textures and sizes to emphasize focal points and capture your target design aesthetic. Brick carries a sense of tradition, character and timelessness while also serving as a popular

choice for homeowners due to its design flexibility. With benchmark qualities such as low maintenance, resilience, durability, sustainability and beauty, brick can help homeowners balance function with appearance. Spirit of Tahoe The Spirit of Tahoe arrived Monday, November 29th, 2021 in South Lake Tahoe at the Tahoe Keys Marina. It awaits Coast Guard approval and a swing crane to lift it into the marina waters early this upcoming summer. Purchased in Ft. Myers, Florida, it was chartered 1,000 miles across the Gulf of Mexico to Galveston, Texas. It then began its methodical 1,900 mile overland journey to Tahoe, to be fully reassembled. The 75 foot long by 21 foot wide passenger boat will seat 133 people, have two full bars, and a snack bar. The Spirit of Tahoe will relocate to Ski Run Marina for daily public tours and will join Tahoe Cruises’ Safari Rose. Tahoe Cruises has been operating on Lake Tahoe Since 1979, and since the move of the Safari Rose to the Ski Run Marina in 2017, they have been voted best Boat Cruise on Tahoe four years in a row. Safari Rose will continue to cruise the lake after Spirt of Tahoe joins its ranks, but only as a private charter for weddings and parties. SNOWFEST! 2022

SnowFest's Origin In the spring of 1981, Alpine Meadows Marketing Director Bob Everson approached the Tahoe City Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors & Convention Bureau about hosting a winter carnival. In the early 1980s, skiers typically visited Tahoe from December to February, missing the amazing snow pack available in March. Late June, a community gathering was called to present the idea. Participants included local service groups, ski resorts, shops, and hoteliers. A second meeting was set for mid-July. Bob Everson died in a boating accident on July 4th. The following meeting it was decided to have a “SnowFest!” in honor of Everson. SnowFest! was created to highlight Tahoe's amazing weather and skiing early in March, increase tourists to the area during a typically off-season period, and allow locals to enjoy Tahoe's winter splendor. SnowFest! was a huge hit. The American Business Association called it one of the Top 100 Events in the US, and the California Department of Tourism one of the Top 10 in California. It got national media coverage and drew travelers from across the US and Canada. SnowFest! was heavily in debt in 2000 due to managerial issues. In 2003, a group of community members decided to save the spectacular event. The public embraced the decision with joy. The “Snow Festival” continued to prosper under its new moniker. The festival includes a torchlight parade, laser display, pyrotechnics, pancake breakfasts, concerts, bar parties, ski races, dog and pet activities, an ice cream eating contest, a luau, Mardi Gras party, ice carving, a polar bear swim, and more. It's a chance to play with friends, neighbors, and visitors. Many local non-profits use SnowFest! to host fundraising and educational programs: The Rotary Club Ski Challenge, Kiwanis Irish Stew Feed, North Tahoe Firefighters' Auxiliary Pancake Breakfast, Vertical Express for Multiple Sclerosis, Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Great Ski Race, Tahoe Women's Services presentation of The Vagina Monologues, Sunnyside Resort's Luau benefiting their scholarship program, Lake Tahoe School Children's Science Exploratorium, and Arts for the Schools' presentation of “The Jungle Book.” Each year, several young women compete for the Snow Festival Queen title. The girls are sponsored by local non-profits such as Project Graduation, Rotary, Kiwanis, North Tahoe High School Band, Junior/Senior Prom, and the Firefighters Auxiliary, among others.

When you awake, think about oft-used muscles and extend each one for 15-30 seconds. Activate. Give your brain some fuel in the morning while also doing something nice for your mind. For example, journaling is a gentle way to ease into your morning and get your brain firing. If you can’t think of a topic, simply write down a few affirmations for the day, revisit a pleasant memory from your past or scribble down a goal for the week. Journaling can be an uplifting way to engage the mind and express gratitude for the day ahead.

Get Ready to Run! You’ve made the decision to get in shape, and whether your goal is a full marathon or simply a few laps around the neighborhood, there are a few steps to consider taking before you strap on those shoes and head toward the finish line. Here are a few tips to help get you ready for the big race: Seek Quality Shoes Feet come in a variety of widths and sizes, so visit a specialty running store to find perfect-fitting sneakers. tivity such as cycling or strength training. To avoid exhaustion, be sure to include at least 1-2 “rest” days per week. Stick with Water - Avoid sports drinks that are loaded with preservatives and sugars. You can’t go wrong with the hydrating power of water. As a rule, try to consume at least 6-8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes you run. Proper hydration after the run is also vital. Go Online - Many websites have training guides for various skill levels or different types of races. If you have a smartphone, look for apps that can take you through day-by-day workouts to get you marathon-ready. Nutrition - Filling your body with the proper amount of fuel can help ensure finish-line success. Load up on quality carbohydrates, such as beans, peas, wholewheat pastas, whole-grain cereals, apples, brown rice and root vegetables. Protein also plays an important role in a runner’s nutrition, so fill up on lean meats, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, peanut butter and soy protein sources, as well. By following these general rules, you’ll be able to focus on achieving your goal and enjoy the thrill of finishing the race. Find more tips for a healthier lifestyle at eLivingToday.com.
