Your Pesach Kashrus Questions…Answered Coated Pills Q. It says on your website that one can take any pill medication that is swallowed. Does that include coated pills such as Advil?
A. Most pills which one swallows are coated with a glaze, wax or shellac which makes the pills easier to swallow, and some of these coatings have some form of simple sugar (e.g. sucrose) mixed in to make it even more pleasant to swallow the pill. None of these ingredients pose a Pesach concern. Advil tablets are a good example of this, as the (inactive) ingredient panel shows that they contain carnauba wax, pharmaceutical glaze (i.e. shellac), and sucrose, and one who swallows an Advil pill notices that they have a more pleasant/sweet taste than pills coated with a non-sweetened coating. Other pills are coated with sweeteners which are Pesach sensitive (e.g. sorbitol) or which contain a flavor; such items would be listed as one of the inactive ingredients, and we would not recommend those for Pesach. Dental Tape Q. Is dental tape the same as dental floss?
the pharmacy contain alcohol; does that mean they are or may be chametz?
A. The answer to this question depends on which type of “alcohol” one is discussing, as follows: Benzyl alcohol, methyl alcohol (a.k.a., methanol), isopropyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are not made from chametz. Ethyl alcohol, a.k.a. ethanol, can be made from chametz, and isoamyl alcohol is often a byproduct of whisky. These may also appear on an ingredient panel as part of a compound such as ethyl acetate or isoamyl butyrate. Denatured alcohol, a.k.a. SD Alcohol, is ethyl alcohol which has been blended with other materials to render it not potable; there are different opinions as to whether such alcohol is forbidden on Pesach, and the cRc position is that they should not be used on Pesach unless they are listed as chametz-free on a reliable list of approved Pesach products.
Perfume Q. I’ve
seen other publications which say that all perfume is acceptable for Pesach, but the cRc Passover Guide says that one shouldn’t use ones which contain alcohol. Who is correct?
A. Yes, as with dental floss, all dental tape is acceptable whether it is or isn’t waxed, as long as it isn’t flavored.
Alcohol Q.I see that some items I buy in
A.
The disagreement regarding perfume is based primarily on whether denatured ethyl alcohol is or is not considered inedible. For more on that issue, see the question on “alcohol”.

SEDER SANDWICHES AND LIVING WITH JOY By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob
The Seder is a place of learning and family, of song and holiness, lots of food, fun, and mitzvos, small children, big children, wise grandparents, laughter, and great seriousness, even awe. It’s also about contradictions. The symbols collide throughout the night. There are symbols of celebration such as matzah and reclining, and symbols of pain such as maror (bitter herbs) and strange dips that serve to remind us of the tears, cement and bricks of our slavery. One interpretation of the meaning of the “Four Questions” speaks to the dueling messages. “Ma Nishtana Haleila Hazeh” – How are we to view this night? Is it matzah or maror? Celebration or mourning, triumph or tragedy? The Matzah itself is a paradox. This simple bread, holy for its very simplicity, is called “the bread of affliction,” slave food, and yet it also evokes for us a memory of the bread that had no time to rise in our rush to taste freedom. Is matzah a symbol of suffering or G-d’s love? So, is the emotion of the night honoring and remembering the sadness, or singing with hope and joy? The answer, of course, is both. As children of Holocaust survivors, my sister and I knew intuitively that while the Seder is firstly the story of slavery in Egypt, redemption, and the birth or our nation, it is also about our own parents’ slavery and redemption. The Seder is a discussion of all of Jewish history. It’s a discussion about the 10 plagues, the splitting of the sea, standing as a nation and hearing G-d’s voice at Sinai, the manna in the desert, and the glory days of the holy Temples in our homeland. And it is also about exile, inquisition, crusades, pogroms, the Holocaust, intifadas, and the incredible miracle of the survival of the Jewish people. And for our family, the incredible miracle of our parents and grandmother. It is as much about our three grandparents who were not there, (for whom my sister and I were named) as about our grandmother who was there, whose very existence was a gift. It’s about the depths of despair and the determination to rebuild, with faith and joy. One of the most moving parts of the Seder centers around the mitzvahs of eating matzah and maror. The Haggadah directs one to recline when eating matzah, but
14• CHICAGO JEWISH ADVERTISER
not when partaking of the bitter herbs. I remember thinking many years ago that this business of reclining is like a stage direction for the appropriate emotion during a specific activity. Reclining, an indication of freedom, is a behavioral expression of the emotion that we should be feeling as we eat matzah. As a symbol matzah may signify pain and joy, but tonight we are directed to feel the joy of G-d’s loving intervention. Maror, on the other hand, we are told, should be eaten without reclining, and so we hear the message that the emotion is sadness, honoring the pain, remembering the loss, feeling the bitterness. Which brings us to the Hillel sandwich called Korech. It consists of two pieces of matzah and bitter herbs in the middle. So how do we act now? Do we recline or not? Matzah or maror? Sadness or joy? Over the years the power of this moment has grown for me, the moment when I once again look down at my Haggadah and see those words, “The sandwich is eaten while reclining.” Two small words that convey to us a wisdom of a people, a wisdom that has been our national secret and key to Jewish survival, Jewish vitality: While reclining. This is what we declare to G-d, and to our children, our families, friends, neighbors, and perhaps most importantly, to ourselves. As a people we have matzah times and maror times, times of great joy, times of great tragedy. And as families or individuals we too have matzah times and maror times. We don’t expect a life without hardship. This Seder sandwich is life. And it is our whole history. So we will take this sandwich that You, G-d, have given us and we will eat it with joy, while reclining. We eat the entire sandwich with joy because the enveloping matzah provides the context of love that allows us to swallow even the bitter parts with joy. When we feel Your love we know You are our loving Father, and we trust You, even when it hurts, even when it is so painful. This is how our grandparents and ancestors lived – with trust, with love, and with joy. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought.

The Feast By Tuvia Bolton
Editor's note: This is an old Jewish story/joke/metaphor. Versions abound. My favorite is Tuvia Bolton's rendition:
T
here were once two beggars who used to go around begging together. One was Jewish and the other a gentile. As the night of Passover approached, the Jewish beggar offered to help his non-Jewish friend get invited to a seder (the festive Passover meal accompanied by many commandments and rituals) and get a good meal. "Just put on some Jewish clothes and come with me to the synagogue. Everyone brings home poor guests for the seder. It's easy, you'll see."
we would begin the meal. The smell of the food from the kitchen was great. Then we ate a bit of parsley. Then they started talking, and talking, and talking. In Hebrew. All the time I'm smiling and nodding my head as if I understand what they're saying--like you told me to--but my head is really swimming and hurting from the wine and I'm dying of hunger.
"What did you do to me?" He shouted. "You call that a meal? It was torture!! It was awful! I'll pay you back for this--you'll see..."
"The smell of the food from the kitchen is making me insane, but they don't bring it out. For two hours they don't bring anything out! Just talking, and more talking. Then, just what I needed.... another cup of wine! Then we get up, wash hands, sit back down and eat this big wafer called matzah that tastes like newspaper, leaning to the left (don't ask me why...). I started choking, almost threw up. And then finally they give me this lettuce, I took a big bite and wham! My mouth was on fire. My throat! There was horseradish inside! Nothing to eat but horseradish! You guys are crazy...
"What do you mean? What happened?" the Jew asked.
"Well, I just got up and left. Enough is enough!"
"What happened? As if you didn't know! You Jews are crazy--that's what happened! First we drank a glass of wine. I like wine, but on an empty stomach... My head started spinning a bit but I figured that any second
"Ah, I should have told you." replied the Jew. "What a shame! After the bitter herbs is a glorious meal. You suffered so long; you should have just held out for a few more minutes...!"•
The non-Jewish beggar happily agreed. On the first night of Passover they went to the synagogue, and sure enough, both got invited to different homes for the festive ceremony. Hours later they met in a predetermined place in the local park. But to the amazement of the Jewish beggar, his friend was blazing mad.
