The Observant Jew
Can I
Quote You on That? RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ
I
f you ever notice, when politicians talk, they don’t really say anything definitive. For example, if asked something simple like, “Do you approve of terrorism?” they’ll answer something like, “You know, I appreciate just how important and relevant that question is and I can assure you that it is something I truly and sincerely believe needs to be looked at carefully, an appropriate decision made, and decisive action taken, to get to the bottom of the matter. Next question?” The reason they don’t often make genuine promises is that they can look pretty foolish when everything backfires. They don’t want to be accountable for things they’ve said so they try to say nothing. When they want to imply something, they’ll say, “Now, don’t quote me on this, but I think we’re going to have a real positive outcome in this deal.” No word on what a positive outcome is, though. But the problem is that they will be quoted. In fact, we’re all quoted. All the time. Most commonly, it’s little kids who quote us. Imagine your guests arrive and you say, “Hey! It’s so nice to see you!” You little boy pipes up, “Yeah, Daddy was just saying that he’s been waiting hours for you to finally get here.” Don’t help me kid. “I meant I was just so anxious to see you.” “Right, Dad,” he says with a big grin and a wink. 10

“and anxious to see them leave as soon as possible, right?” Oh boy, it’s going to be a long evening. Yes, kids pick up whatever their parents say and magnify, broadcast, and find ways to incorporate it into their psyches. One couple who was getting away for the weekend for some quiet time without the kids swore them to secrecy. Their eight-year old daughter’s teacher asked them afterwards, “How was the Hyatt?” The little girl had no idea how the teacher had gotten it out of her. The teacher, for her part, hadn’t even asked. One family had gone on a trip but couldn’t find their car in the large parking lot. To make it easier, the man pressed the panic button on their car alarm, causing the lights to flash and the alarm to blare. Their two-year old snapped, “Can someone shut off that $*%#$! alarm?!” With love and respect in her eyes, his wife turned to him and said, “That’s all yours dear.” Not just what we say, but what we believe, is transmitted. How many kids root for a sports team because their parents do? How many kids hate Tom Brady without even knowing why? (It’s OK, he really does deserve it.) The Gemara describes a family of Kohanim that was punished because a girl began banging on the altar in the Bais HaMikdash and saying, “Wolf, wolf, how long will you

swallow up the money of the Jewish people?!” Why were they punished for her behavior? Because it’s obvious she heard it at home. A fellow once went to a Rebbe. “Rebbe,” he said, “my sweet little boy loves to pretend he’s wearing Tefillin. He’s only three but he wraps a belt around his arm and shuckels with such concentration! I think he’s destined for great things. Do you think I should get him his own pair of Tefillin?” The Rebbe looked at the man in disbelief. “Should you buy him his own pair of Tefillin? No. Should you try going to daven in shul like a mentsch instead of at home where he watches you? Definitely.” When I write things, I find people quoting me. I hope they’re picking things I can be proud of. And that’s the thing. We don’t get to choose what people will quote us on. We don’t get to say, “Off the record,” because everything stays on the record. Even the personal whispers between husband and wife are being recorded in Heaven and
will be played back. The thoughts we have and the things we mutter under our breath will be available in high-definition and transcripts will be available. Whether with our kids, with our behavior, or even when we’re all alone, we need to be aware of what we’re saying and doing, and the impression we may make on others. We should focus on doing and saying the right things so that when it gets repeated, we can be proud of it. If we do, we’ll all be a lot happier – but don’t quote me on that. Touro College LA Observes the Yahrzeit of its Founding Dean, Dr. Esther Rose Lowy
I
f every teacher lights a spark, then the founding dean of Touro College Los Angeles (TCLA) Esther Rose Lowy, Ph.D., MBA, lit a raging flame of passion for collegiate learning in the Los Angeles Orthodox Jewish community. Almost a year ago, on 27 Kislev, the Los Angeles frum community lost a great light, a brilliant intellect, and a fierce advocate for Jewish higher education. Dr. Lowy, not only raised eight refined and accomplished children with her beloved husband Rudolph, but she extended her maternal warmth, care, concern, and encouragement to every student, professor, and staff member, who came through the doors of TCLA. By establishing and sustaining TCLA and teaching and counseling countless students in her ten years as dean, Dr. Lowy’s light continues to shine in TCLA. For instance, Leah Rosen, who graduated from TCLA in 2012 and had taken Dr. Lowy’s math classes, explains how TCLA’s founding dean had the ability to turn people with even the greatest math phobias into confident math students. “Dr. Lowy was an incredible math teacher,” said Rosen, who also worked with Dr. Lowy as the Director of Admissions. Dr. Lowy took a different approach to teaching math than most teachers and she took an equally encouraging approach in the way in which she advised her many students so they could graduate from TCLA in the least time with the best possible education. Samantha Cohen, who plans to graduate from TCLA 14

with a psychology B.A. in January 2016, agreed that Dr. Lowy guided each student personally. “Dr. Lowy always welcomed me into her office with a loving smile and was always so willing and wanting to help,” Cohen said. “She had such a comforting presence. I’m very sad that I will not be able to share my graduation experience with Dr. Lowy this year,” Cohen continued. “She is sincerely missed every single day.” Dr. Lowy’s successor as dean, Michael D. Hamlin, Ph.D., stated that he is inspired by Dr. Lowy’s greatest goal, which was to help each student achieve his or her greatest potential in whichever field he or she chose to pursue. “Once after the school had a successful reaffirmation of accreditation, the staff was reviewing the process,” remembered Hamlin. “After assessing the various highs and lows of the accreditor’s visit, Dr. Lowy stated proudly, ‘our secret weapon is always the students and their positive feelings about the school. Our students’ devotion to the school always impresses the accreditors.’ Clearly, she was proud of the positive culture she had created that produce such affirmative ambassadors for Touro.” Director of Touro’s Psychology department Aaron Brownstein, Ph.D., added that Dr. Lowy wanted nothing more than for students to go onto great things, “when she heard good news about her students’ accomplishments, she heard the news like a proud grandmother.” One example of nachat came from a female student

who got into the UCLA School of Law after attending TCLA. “As a proud Bruin herself, Dr. Lowy could not have been happier for this student,” noted Brownstein, who added that Dr. Lowy had taught math at UCLA and had earned her MBA at the UCLA Anderson School of Management after earning her doctorate from New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at a time when less than 4% of Americans receiving doctorates in mathematics were women. Dr. Lowy’s unwavering commitment to her students came from her staunch belief in the necessity of a college education for frum high school graduates. TCLA psychology professor and TCLA graduate (2011) Rabbi Menachem Stulburger, found Dr. Lowy’s love of learning inspiring. “She often told us that we were in the best time of our lives to be able to sit, learn, and master material,” says Stulberger, who went on to earn a master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy through Touro University Worldwide. “Dr. Lowy shared with us on more than one occasion that she felt it was a privilege to be in school. I found Dr. Lowy’s positive perspective of learning refreshing in a world where many students view school as a burden and an unnecessary thing they have to do.” Dr. Lowy’s dream was to respond to the pressing need in L.A. for an excellent and strong institution of higher education for local Orthodox Jewish students, recalled Hamlin. In fact, Lowy often said that she was motivated to establish TCLA to provide the same supportive learning environment in Los Angles as Touro College provided in New York. “Prior to creating TCLA, Dr. Lowy had watched as her own children went off to New York to pursue a college education that supported their Jewish values,” recalled Hamlin. “Dr. Lowy was determined to help Los Angeles stem this tide by providing a strong Jewish college. I share Dr. Lowy’s aim to provide higher educational opportunities that allow our local children to live at home and in the community and earn their college degrees,” asserted Hamlin, who has taken the helm of TCLA to con-
tinue and to expand Dr. Lowy’s dreams of a flourishing Orthodox Jewish college in Los Angeles. “We are continuing to build on what Dr. Lowy started, would like to add to its programs in psychology and business and develop more science and health science-related courses. We want to help our students gain muchneeded professional skills they will need as they pursue their careers in various fields. Also, as the Touro College and University System continues to develop more health-related programs, TCLA will be working to promote more pathways that lead from our undergraduate programs to Touro’s graduate and professional programs in medicine and the health sciences.” Everything Dr. Lowy did in the way she ran Touro was with a perspective of Jewish Torah observance, Brownstein and Rosen asserted. “She made sure the academic calendar was in synch with the Jewish calendar,” they said. “She hosted events for Jewish holidays at her house. Everyone could see that she was a frum woman in everything she practiced. She wasn’t afraid to be frum. That is what Touro is: not having to worry about your level of frumkeit.” Dr. Lowy’s comfort with melding her academic outlook with that of that the Torah is her legacy at TCLA. A current TCLA student explains, “Dr. Lowy developed the school so that it could ultimately serve more students in the most wholesome and comprehensive way. She was uncompromising with anything that would threaten the religious integrity or the academic integrity of the school. Dr. Lowy created this Torah-friendly learning environment, that doesn’t compromise my values.” On 27 Kislev, TCLA lost its Queen Esther, but her loving efforts, brilliant mind, dedication, hard work, innovative problem solving, and encouragement on behalf of her children, her students and the Los Angeles Jewish community continue to inspire and fan the flames of a passion for learning, ideas, and accomplishment.
“Dr. Lowy always welcomed me into her office with a loving smile and was always so willing and wanting to help.”

Beverly Hills and Israel Sign Historic Partnership Agreement Israeli-American Council (IAC) Lauds New Wave of Cooperation in California
T
he Beverly Hills City Council and the State of Israel signed an historic agreement establishing a formal partnership to promote cooperation, mutual understanding, and friendship. The agreement was formally signed during a ceremony at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, which took place as part of a fundraising Gala for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. “We are committed to bringing the best of Israel to Beverly Hills to help confront the drought, enhance cyber security, and share best practices and technologies related to public safety,” said David Siegel, Consul General of Israel in the United State’s Pacific Southwest. “We enter into this partnership realizing that we can make a difference in addressing common challenges like water conservation, cyber security, and public safety.” Following the Joint Declaration, the City of Beverly Hills and the State of Israel will hold discussions and information exchanges to promote joint initiatives. The partnership will strengthen the Beverly Hills - Herzliya Sister City program; encourage joint task forces, trade delegations, and professional exchanges; and enhance collaboration between educational and cultural institutions. “The IAC applauds Beverly Hills for seizing the opportunity to deepen its partnership with Israel, unleashing the country’s vast potential to improve life in Southern California,” said Adam Milstein, National Chairman of the Israeli-American Council (IAC). “As a nexus between the U.S. and Israel, the IAC is thrilled to see the state and local governments in California take the lead in creating
bilateral agreements. We hope to see similar partnerships with Israel developed throughout the United States.” The agreement with Beverly Hills comes in the wake of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the State of California and the State of Israel last year, which was developed to advance collaboration in seven areas by facilitating intergovernmental working groups, sister-city relationships, and exchanges between academics, citizens, and policymakers.
“The IAC applauds Beverly Hills for seizing the opportunity to deepen its partnership with Israel.” About the IAC: Headquartered in Los Angeles, the IAC is committed to building an engaged and united Israeli-American community that strengthens our next generations, the American Jewish community, and the State of Israel. The IAC strives to achieve these goals through programs and events for all ages – and by empowering and supporting a wide array of non-profit organizations within the Israeli-American community. T
his past Yom Tov was much like any other. I tried to be organized with shopping and cooking. Tried is the operative term. I am lucky that I have children at home who are a big help and did at least half of the work this year. I get excited that my grown children will come to visit with my grandchildren and the house will get loud and messy. I find that if I anticipate these outcomes they become a pleasure not a bother. Also Sukkos is especially nice, since most of the eating happens outside and the house stays a little cleaner. I remember learning that for Yom Tov a man should have wine and meat to bring added happiness and that a woman is supposed to get new clothing and/or jewelry. This is one of the first things I make sure newly married men know. Often it is good insurance for a joyous holiday for the man, as well as for the woman, to remember to give a gift to his wife of either jewelry of clothing. I try to be low maintenance and get my

own gift. I also know what I want better than anyone else does. After a few years I got tired of trying to think of something I wanted just before the holiday. Sometimes I wanted something new and sometimes I didn’t. At least, I didn’t want something special at that moment in time. Three years ago I had what I think is a great idea! As a result of this great idea, I started a new “minhag”. I decided that my “diamonds” were my children and grandchildren. I called my favorite photographer and booked him for a family photo shoot during the vacation that year. This is the one time I can get all of my children, even the out of state ones, and my grandchildren together. I am lucky enough to have my mother living locally and she was happy to participate. The photos that were a result are definitely worth more that jewelry. I have managed to keep this up for the third year now. It’s not always so simple. I sometimes have to be done

cooking early so we can take our pictures Erev Yom Tov if that’s the one day we are all available. Between work, day trips and the photographer’s schedule it takes an iron will to find a time that works for everyone. I once had to convince one of my adult children to be flexible by saying, “ this is the only thing I ask of you and It is only once a year”. I think that statement is true. I hope so. I try very hard not to ask too much of my adult children, but that’s a topic for another time. I have two albums sitting side by side waiting for us to make this year’s album and place it in its slot. The whole family enjoys looking at them and sharing them with friends and guests. It’s a real pleasure seeing how everyone has grown and developed since the year before. It’s also a nice way to include your children-inlaw along with your children and make them feel like part of the family. For example, we usually have one shot of all of the men and boys and another of the •

Mi K’amcha Yisroel D
uring the height of the recent spate of terrorist attacks , I boarded a plane and traveled to Israel. My purpose was to visit West Coast students currently studying in seminaries and yeshivas including those under Touro College Los Angeles’ Israel Option, a program that offers eligible students financial aid and full credit for their gap year studies. The decision to go despite daily reports of stabbings and other violence was made with the conviction that we must continue to do the important things in our lives without letting fear get in the way. It was interesting that although the State Department hadn’t issued a travel warning, the travel insurance company informed me that they would deny a cancellation or interruption claim since they consider Israel a location that is under fire from continuous terror. The reality I found upon my arrival was markedly different than that policy would indicate. Once in Israel, I noticed that while the Americans were on various levels of lockdown, life continued as normal for most Israelis. Hundreds of Bais Yaakov girls spilled out into the streets of Jerusalem at dismissal time, chatting casually as they 24

“At first, I wondered why people weren’t acting more nervous and cautious, but then I came to the realization that two critical factors were keeping them calm...” away from the bus stop where the Bezek employee went berserk, a little boy walking alone asked me to help him cross the street. People waited at bus stops looking at their smartphones or in a sefer, grocery stores were busy, traffic was often tied up and restaurants were packed late into the evening. At first, I wondered why people weren’t acting more nervous and cautious, but then I came to the realization that two critical factors were keeping them calm. First, 323-965-1544 •

people cannot live in constant fear and therefore, psychologically, they find a way to block out the situation. More powerful, though, was the clear resolve not to let the heinous actions of a few deter the pursuit of a normal life, and to continue to trust in Hashem. This determination was not born of ignorance or irresponsibility. There was increased security, some reduction of casual travel and I did overhear Israeli college students comparing pepper spray bottles. And yet, while taking sensible measures to promote safety, there was an undeniable determination to persevere. In the yeshiva and seminary community, I found a greater intensity of study and prayer. On Thursday night near midnight, I accompanied Rabbi Senter of Aderes Hatorah and his yeshiva to the Kosel to recite Nishmas and Tehilim. We took vans instead of the normal walking or train as a precaution, but we found the Kosel teeming with people, all praying with heartfelt intensity and devotion. I am glad I made the decision not to postpone my trip so that I could experience the strength of our people firsthand. Mi k’amcha Yisroel! •

Dennis Prager Highlights Sold-Out Chabad Evening in the Conejo E
very seat of the 1000-person capacity banquet-hall of the Conejo Valley’s Hyatt Westlake Hotel was filled as renowned author, commentator and radio talk-show personality, Dennis Prager, took to the podium to address the topic “In Search of America’s Moral Compass - on Domestic and Global Issues,” as part of the Conejo Jewish Academy’s ongoing lecture series on current issues of the day. In addition to addressing the recent rapid decline of traditional American values on the social and cultural fronts, Prager, whose most recent book is entitled “The Ten Commandments: Still the Best Moral Code,” was able to draw a direct line between the moral deterioration prevalent on domestic issues and the recent lack of coherent American direction and leadership when it comes to foreign affairs. The most telling examples being the debacle of the nuclear deal with Iran and the abhorrent drawing of moral equivalencies between Arab attacks on innocent civilians and Israel’s response in self-defense. “I say it often, but I think it bears repeating that the ‘Israel Test’ is the central divide in the world today,” said Prager. “Those who stand in support of Israel in her daily struggle for survival while surrounded by by ruthless and merciless hate-filled enemies, clearly have their moral compass intact. Those, on the other hand, who stand against Israel, and are supportive of those who tell blatant lies in their drive to instigate and perpetuate violence against innocent men, women and children, are obviously seriously morally deficient... One cannot be presented with a clearer juxtaposition of good and evil than the contrast offered by Israel - a country seeking to live in peace as she contributes so much to the world in every arena of human achievement - and her neighbors who are engaged in the most barbaric acts of terror and oppression seen anywhere in the world today.” Throughout the course of his talk, Dennis Prager referred repeatedly to the evening’s opening remarks delivered

by Rabbi Moshe Bryski, Director of Chabad of the Conejo, in setting the stage for the ensuing discussion. This included the Rabbi’s reference to “In G-d We Trust” as the foundational principle upon which America was first established. “When you tear down the foundation, you risk having the entire structure collapse onto itself, resulting in moral chaos and confusion,” said Rabbi Bryski.

Cook, Pray, Eat Kosher!
MIA ADLER OZAIR, MA, LPCC, NCC
A
s a wife, mom, and therapist, I believe that the kitchen is the heart of a family. Cooking for family is one the best ways to show your love, especially healthy and nutritious foods. My recent book project, Cook, Pray, Eat Kosher: The Essential Kosher Cookbook for the Jewish Soul (Feldheim, November 2015) began five years ago as a passion project to capture the culturally diverse nature of my own marriage, along with some family-favorite recipes. I wanted all of our nine children (4 of his, 3 of mine, and 2 of ours) to have this treasure of information to take with them into their own families one day. Given that my husband and I are opposites (he is an Israeli-Iraqi Sephardic man while I am an American-German Ashkenazi woman) you might imagine that both our cultures and our taste buds are quite different! Merging our two families has been quite like creating an amazing stew with a multitude of ingredients and flavors all coming together to create something unique and fabulous. As the book project evolved I began to explore the deeper spiritual meaning between the body, food, and the Jewish soul, and what I found was inspiring. For me, this new knowledge took cooking and Jewish food to an entirely different level. As a result, included in the book are original guides for how to prepare meals for and observe Shabbat and holidays, how to fulfill the woman’s mitzvah of making and taking challah, and a profound reflection on the essential relationship between food and the Jewish soul. Given that so much of our lives revolve around food, and given that food plays such an integral role in the life of a Jewish family (what we can eat, how and when we can eat it), it would seem that developing a healthy relationship with food can only benefit us. In creating this cookbook my intention is to not only equip you with some great recipes but to hopefully inspire you to see how your relationship with food can elevate you and your family. There are so many Jewish laws we must observe when it comes to food. However, the one thing that we must do, regardless of our religious background, is to always strive to find ways to grow spiritually, to challenge ourselves, and to find the delicate balance one must have in order to create a healthy connection with food and with life. With recipes sourced from a variety of places, this book weaves together the culinary delights of both Ashkenazi and Sepharadi heritages offering a full range of dishes for every palate. Holiday menus are carefully narrated, and tips about kashrut and spiritual connections during Shabbat and holidays are illuminated. With 36

So many memories of sitting in my Oma’s kitchen in her (at the time) fashionable green plastic chairs and rolling cookie dough on the white and green speckled table. She was always so patient as my sister and I played with the dough and made all sorts of shapes. Oma made so many wonderful and delicious cakes and dishes, but these cookies stand out among my favorites. The vanilla-almond scent is so inviting as they bake.
