Don’t Walk Behind Me, I May Not Lead RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ
F
or many of us, the title of this piece will conjure up images of summer camp, bonfires, and arms around the shoulders of our friends. For others, it may be the lilting sounds of Uncle Moishy or whichever other singer sang the words that so many of us know: Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow; Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend And together we will walk in the ways of HaShem. V’ahavta L’rayacha Kamocha, Zeh Klal Gado-o-o-o-l BaTorah… I know, you’ll be singing this all day now and have me to thank for it. But I’m not here just to get the song caught in your head. I’m here to discuss what it means and what it means to me. I’m not sure of the origins of this song, though the beginning words are attributed to Albert Camus, a philosopher who is a hero to atheists. I find it ironic that what may be his words have become a motto used by Jewish children to convey a camaraderie and brotherhood in learning about HaShem together. HaShem does little jokes like that all the time and I personally enjoy His sense of humor. Interestingly, and it’s something I would not have known had I not been researching for this article, his version of atheism is much more tolerable than what we find today. He did not believe in G-d, but he also had no need to force his disbelief onto those who do be10

lieve. He was not saying that people who were religious were wrong or poisoning the world, only that he, himself, did not believe. The truth is that this approach could benefit everyone. It’s not just atheists who shouldn’t force things. When Torah and Mitzvos are used as a club or battering ram, which unfortunately happens too often by people who don’t understand the love of HaShem for people, they have the effect of turning people off and pushing them away. Derache’ha darchei noam, the Torah’s ways are supposed to be pleasant and if someone is teaching it any other way, they’re missing the point. The words of this song, therefore, are a reminder that you don’t have to force your opinion on someone else, nor do you have to accept theirs. It’s possible to, according to this philosopher, walk side by side with people you don’t agree with, and remain peaceable. And, once the Jewish attitude was attached to it, it reminds us that none of us know all there is to know and we need to keep learning about HaShem along with everyone else. This is an important concept at this time of the Three Weeks, when we know the Bais HaMikdash was destroyed because of Sinas Chinam, free hatred, in which people felt justified in hating others because they didn’t believe as they did. Ironically, today people feel we need to be more tolerant of people who are less religious, but historically the problem was that people hated those who were •

more religious or observant than themselves. I don’t think either problem is solved, but I don’t have a solution either, so I’m glad that’s not the main thrust of my article. What got the song playing in my head one day was when my Mother-in-law was driving somewhere with us and said, “I’ll just follow you.” Now, if you’ve ever been the lead car of a convoy, you know this means you have a new measure of responsibility. You can’t just look at the road and change lanes whenever you want. You can’t speed up indiscriminately because the person behind you might get lost. You have to signal properly, and keep looking back to make sure whoever you’re leading is right behind you. Being the leader means giving up a certain amount of freedom because the followers may not be able to do the same things you can. And, while as the song says, we may choose whether or not we follow, we don’t always get the choice whether or not to lead. We are constantly under surveillance. People see what we do and are influenced one way or another. Whether it’s our children, neighbors, co-workers, or strangers, our actions set a precedent for others. We may not even realize we’re being watched, but we are. If we sit around a Shabbos table, or at the pool or on the porch,
and schmooze about other people, do we have any reason to suspect our children will not do the same? If we get angry on the road, won’t our passengers or other drivers pick up this behavior? And if we act politely and considerately, won’t others follow suit? (Well, they may not, but at least it won’t be because of us!) So, when you hear that song tinkling in your head, and you come to the words, “I may not lead,” remind yourself that it’s really not likely the case. You will always be leading, showing someone the way, and subconsciously deciding whether they will make it safely to their destination, or instead, end up taking a wrong turn because you weren’t looking out for them.

Chabad of the Conejo Launches New “Shema Yisroel” App for iPhone and Android
A
s part of its ongoing campaign to promote and facilitate increased awareness, access and consistent recital of the “Shema” among Jews the world over, Chabad of the Conejo has launched a new “Shema Yisroel App” for the iphone and Android operating systems, which is now available to users as a free download by searching under “Shema Yisroel”. In addition to an audible “sayalong” feature and multilingual transliterations of the first verse of the Shema, and a display of all three chapters of the Shema in their original Hebrew text, the Shema Yisroel App informs and reminds users of the proper times for reciting both the morning and evening Shema in his or her specific location. These features allow users to select how much in advance of the prescribed morning time, and how long after the prescribed evening time, they would like the system to sound notification alerts in the form of soft beeps. It also provides the Shabbat Candlelighting times for the given geographical area. “Although the Shema is technically a ‘prayer,’ it is much more than that,” says Rabbi Moshe Bryski, Executive Director of Chabad of the Conejo. “It is essentially a Jewish ‘pledge of allegiance’ to the one and only Master of the Universe and a powerful expression of the inner flame of G-dliness that is at the core of every Jewish soul… Recited both day and night; at home or on the road; at leisure or at work; when thanking, praising, beseeching or

Touro College Los Angeles Announces a New Degree Program in Jewish Education Studies M
ore and more people are realizing the importance of a college degree. One look at the differences in income and employment rates for different levels of education make the issue very clear. One study, the Current Population Survey by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals how earnings for full-time wage and salary workers go up with the number of years spent in school.

Touro College Los Angeles Responds with a New Jewish Education Program According to Dean Michael Hamlin, over the years many of the students in his psychology classes, were already teaching or assisting in Jewish Schools even while they were attending college and many continued on in teaching and administrative roles in Jewish education. As Dean Hamlin observed, “Over the years students requested a degree that was more closely tailored to fit the needs of those who wanted to learn more about teaching. So, in keeping with its commitment to provide degrees that lead to professional advancement, Touro College Los Angeles is responding to these requests and is proudly announcing a new program in Jewish Education Studies.” The program will provide coursework in education, psychology and Judaic Studies along with hands-on training in Jewish schools for students who desire to develop the skills that will make them prized candidates in teaching and administrative positions in Jewish educational institutions. The coursework with lead to a Bachelor’s Degree in Judaic Studies with a concentration in Jewish Education Studies. The Judaic Education Studies Program has been designed to address the goals of students who want to develop skills and knowledge that allow them to excel in Jewish educational settings. The program consists of 4 parts: t Courses in Education and Psychology will help build knowledge and skills in teaching and learning sciences t Teaching Practicum credits for participating in teaching and educational activities in Jewish schools. t Judaic Studies credits gained both from their Israel Seminary or Yeshiva plus further Judaic courses in the program t General Studies courses in English, Humanities, Science,
and Math will help students develop communication, critical thinking, and content knowledge they will need to teach The program is designed to help students complete their degree in an accelerated fashion and can be completed in 6 semesters (including 2 summers). Because Touro is a WASC accredited college, credits earned in the program are transferrable to other accredited institutions if the student should need to re-locate. The Jewish Education Studies Program is designed to provide a solid educational foundation for students who wish to go on to a Masters or other graduate programs to gain a teaching certificate or graduate certifications in education or other human service fields. Touro College Los Angeles was established to provide an environment in which Jewish students’ cultural and spiritual needs could go hand in hand with their educational pursuits. Touro does not simply accommodate Jewish traditions, it supports and sustains them. The College is one of few in this country that builds in time for students to worship and to study, to celebrate and to honor their cultures and beliefs. The Chessed Menachem Mendel Program of Colel Chabad W
hile motivating oneself for school can be a challenge for any student, it can be all that much more difficult for those children who have lost a parent to tragedy or illness. In recognition of this unique group of students, the Chessed Menachem Mendel program of the Colel Chabad charitable organization developed a special initiative specifically designed to provide orphaned students with that extra drive to succeed. On Thursday evening, July 9th, close to one hundred of these students were hosted for an award ceremony saluting their academic and social accomplishments despite their personal challenges. Through a grant from the Barad Scholarship Fund, supported by the Barad family of New York, students who have lost a parent are provided additional financial support to supplement their school-based learning programs. Another 100 students will be awarded in a similar ceremony hosted by the Falic Scholarship Fund next month. Depending on the need, students in the scholarship program are offered tutoring and mentoring in problematic subjects, didactic and neurologic diagnosis for more serious issues, home visits by social workers and professionals who keep an ongoing connection with the family, enrichment programs for those gifted in certain areas, animal therapy to help with emotional issues as well as fund-

In addition to the help provided to the students, the single- parent is also supported by the program through professional training, support groups and fun days and retreats to rejuvenate the family. The Chessed Menachem Mendell program is one of many run by Colel Chabad, the longest running social services organization in Israel.

Founded in 1788 by the first Rebbe of the Lubavitcher Chassidic movement, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi , Colel Chabad was set up with the goal of supporting the welfare needs of the community in the Holy Land. Since that time the organization’s activities have continued and responded to the growing needs of the Israeli population. Colel Chabad runs a year round assistance program for widows and orphans whereby the provide food, clothing and social services for

close to 300 widows and over 600 orphans annually. Former Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau greeted the middle and high school students and their families at the event in Jerusalem. “I know what you are going through all too well,” started Rabbi Lau, who was orphaned during the holocaust by the age of eight. Addressing the Balad family, Rabbi Lau thanked them for their support of these most important members of the Jewish people. “Every orphan and every widow are a world unto themselves. To support them and to help them succeed is to build up an entire world.” Following his remarks, each student was presented with their certificate and a check - their scholarship fund for the coming year - and were entertained by several of the students who have been studying music as part of the enrichment program.
“My children are the only children who have lost a parent in our small community in the Shomron,” shared one mother who’s husband passed away from a brain aneurism two years ago. “They always feel different. Here, among all of these other children, they feel at ease and can finally relax.” “These children have all been through a very difficult time. Not only with the loss of their parent, but with all the everyday challenges that come along with that loss,” said Yitzchak Marton, Program Director of Chessed Menachem Mendel. “This program invests so much time and support to each child, helping in the way that best suits them individually. It is inspiring to see the investment that these children have put in their studies and in their future.”

Los Angeles Strengthens Its Partnership with Laniado Hospital “A
ll Israel is Responsible for Each Other”; the overriding theme behind the “Laniado Hospital Week” that took place during the first two weeks of June was demonstrated thoroughly in the many community events which took place, including at the highlight Breakfast Reception function. Miriam Fierberg-Ikar, who was Guest Speaker at the Breakfast Reception of the West Coast Friends of Laniado Hospital, is the very popular Mayor of the city of Netanya. Laniado Hospital is located in Netanya and fulfills an important strategic role serving as the only medical hospital center for the 500,000 residents of Netanya and its surrounding areas. Laniado Hospital was put to the ultimate test during the period of the Intifada when it received and treated close to a thousand victims from the 22 terrorist attacks that took place in Netanya, including the infamous Pesach Seder night Massacre at the Park Hotel when 30 were murdered and over a hundred and fifty people were injured. Mayor Fierberg told the packed audience of over two hundred participants that she was very touched to see the many people that came to show their support for Laniado Hospital. The Breakfast Reception was held as a fundraising event for Laniado Hospital and to bring attention to its urgent need to complete the building of an Underground and Missile

Preparing for the Bais HaMikdash Cattleman Raising Historic Herd of Red Heifers in Israel

he Temple Institute is working together with an Israeli cattleman to raise a red heifer in Israel, in strict accordance with the Biblical commandment. The project is the culmination of years of research at the Temple Institute that fuses ancient religious texts and modern science. “We’ve been working on this for decades. The red heifer has to be supervised and cared for in a special way since its birth. And it’s very complex,” Rabbi Chaim Richman, the International Director of the Temple Institute told Tazpit News Agency. Over two thousand years ago, during the near millennium that the two Temples stood in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount, the ashes of the red heifer were used by the priests for purification purposes. In order to carry out this project, the Temple Institute has joined forces with an experienced Israeli cattle rancher who www.thejewishlink.com

is an expert in the science of animal husbandry, under the halachic supervision and guidance of the rabbis of the Temple Institute. The cattle rancher is utilizing the technique of implanting the frozen embryos of the Red Angus cattle, which originally come from North America in Israeli domestic cattle. “We can select proper candidates from those calves that are born. They will be cared for under specific instructions,” explained Rabbi Richman to Tazpit. The end result of this program will be the introduction of the Red Angus breed into Israel said Rabbi Richman, who also added that it would improve the quality of cattle in Israel. This method, authorized and approved by Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture, has already proven successful with the birth of a number of male Red Angus. requires advance planning, preparation and constant supervision according to Rabbi Richman. In order for a red heifer to be considered kosher for Biblical use, it must literally be raised from birth under specific conditions and in a controlled environment, which has never been attempted in Israel during modern times. “Three decades of research and preparation have led us to this special day. During this period known as the ‘Three Weeks,’ as world Jewry mourns the destruction of the Second Holy Temple, the Temple Institute has taken a bold move towards the third. Having already prepared over 70 sacred vessels including the golden menorah and High Priest’s gemstone-encrusted breastplate, now is the time to fulfill the commandment of the Red Heifer,” said Rabbi Richman. In order to raise funds and awareness, the Temple Institute has launched a crowd funding campaign called “Raise

a Red Heifer in Israel” on Indiegogo, following the success of the organization’s campaign last year that raised over $100,000 towards the architectural plans of the Third Temple. Within a day of the initial launch for the red heifer campaign, nearly $11,000 has been raised so far. The Temple Institute aims to raise $125,000 for the red heifer project and according to the fundraising page on Indiegogo, contributions will go towards embryo implantation, veterinary care and feed, identification and separate care of candidates for the perfect red heifer, as well as publication of halachic research and findings. The successful introduction of suitable red heifers to Israel is the first project of a multi-level program that will span a number of years. According to Jewish tradition, a red heifer is a female cow that is three years of age with a particular reddish hue and
cannot have even two hairs of any other color. It cannot be used for any type of labor and must be blemish free. The biblical commandment regarding the red heifer can be found in the Book of Numbers and is considered as the only antidote to the state of impurity brought on by death. “The emergence of the red heifer is not some mystical miracle,” elucidated Rabbi Richman. “It is a practical development alongside Torah knowledge and science.” The Temple Institute is a research and education center founded in 1987 by Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, who served in the paratrooper brigade that liberated the Temple Mount during the Six Day War in 1967. In addition to educational activity, the institute has also recreated over 60 sacred vessels for use in the third Temple, which can be seen at the Temple Institute’s Visitors Center in the Old City of Jerusalem.

4. Turn the heat down to low and add in the stock 1Ž4 cup at a time, stirring continuously with each addition. Do not add more stock until the previous 1Ž4 cup has been completely absorbed.
2. Melt the butter in the same pan over medium heat. Add in the shallots, garlic and salt and sauté until shallots are slightly browned, about 2 minutes. Then add the farro and stir until the farro is slightly toasted and coated in butter. 3. Then add in the white wine and let simmer until the wine 36

5. Keep adding until the farro is cooked and mixture is creamy, about 30-40 minutes. You may not need all the stock. 6. Stir in Parmesan cheese and Greek yogurt immediately and then stir in mushrooms. Garnish with pine nuts and chives.

GRILLED SESAME GINGER VEGETABLE COUSCOUS Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Ingredients 2 large carrots, washed, peeled and cut in half the long way 1 cup button mushroom tops, cleaned 1/2 bunch asparagus, trimmed 3 tablespoons sesame oil 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 1/4 cups Pereg Gourmet Couscous 1 1/4 cups water

1 tablespoon ginger, minced 2 teaspoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon sesame oil 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon rice vinegar 1 teaspoon honey Pinch cayenne pepper 1 bunch scallions, thinly sliced (white and light green parts) 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro
Directions 1. Place the carrots, mushrooms and asparagus in a large bowl and toss with sesame oil, soy sauce, and black pepper. Let sit for 5 minutes. 2. Heat the grill or grill pan to medium high heat. Put the vegetables on the grill or in a grill basket and grill while basting vegetables with extra marinade. Grill until the vegetables are tender and slightly charred. Set aside to cool. 3. Meanwhile, cook the couscous. Bring the water to a boil and add couscous. Remove from heat, stir, cover, and let sit for 10
minutes until the couscous absorbs the liquid. Drain any extra liquid and cool. 4. When the vegetables are cool, slice the asparagus and carrots into diagonal bite sized pieces and slice the mushrooms. Combine with couscous. 5. To make the dressing, whisk together ginger, 2 teaspoons soy sauce, sesame oil, olive oil, rice vinegar, honey, cayenne pepper and scallions. Dress the couscous and garnish with cilantro. Serve at room temperature.
ISRAELI COUSCOUS SALAD WITH BEETS, GOAT CHEESE & WALNUTS Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Ingredients 1 cup (1 package) Pereg Gourmet Israeli Couscous 1 3/4 cups water 4 medium red beets, tops removed 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided 1 cup arugula 3 tablespoons lemon juice
Total time: 50 minutes Yield: 4 1-cup servings 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 cup red onion, sliced thin 1/2 bunch scallions, sliced thin (light green and white pieces) 1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese 1/4 cup walnuts pieces
Directions 1. Pre-heat the oven to 450-degrees. 2. Drizzle the beets with 1Ž2 tablespoon olive oil and wrap the beets loosely in tin foil. Roast for 40-60 minutes until tender. Cool, peel, and dice the beets into 1Ž2 inch cube pieces. 3. Bring 1 3Ž4 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add the couscous and 1Ž2 tablespoon olive oil and stir. What is Livescan Fingerprinting? Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states.
