The Enlarged Beige, Calligraphy-Addressed Envelope in the Mail By Dr. Robert J. Rome
T
his is the time that we receive in the mail the beautifully calligraphied beige envelopes with two return addresses on the back. Inside the envelopes are wedding announcements, often with both Hebrew and English texts, both in fancy scripts. The invitations are especially exciting when you remember back to the day of birth of either the bride or groom. (They grow up so fast.) So far, this summer, my own house has been privileged to receive four such invitations to weddings. We also have received e-vites, special electronic notices sent by email, informing us of L’Chaim’s, engagement parties to introduce the newly engaged couples. Weddings. Engagements. Mazel Tov! In a time when people seem pessimistic about the economy and the future, riots throughout the world seem to be destroying entire countries, we see young couples getting married. These couples are proclaiming their optimism and hope for the future. When people generally seem to feel isolated and all on their own, these young couples are making a commitment to each other. They are embarking on a partnership. They are taking a stand. They are standing for something. They are accepting tradition. When others are rejecting the values of their parents and grandparents, these young couples will be married in the same ceremony that united their parents and their parents before that. 8 AUGUST 2011
The world around seems crazy. The “old ways” often just don’t seem to matter. Moms do not need dads to raise children. Dads don’t need moms. People don’t even talk to one another. Next door neighbors often remain strangers to one another, even after living for years right next door. People are making cutbacks in their lives, eliminating activities and expenses to cutback with the diminishing economy. People don’t want to take chances. Polls indicate that most Americans see their lives getting worse. Yet, against this backdrop, couples are standing up and proclaiming to the world their love for each other, their hope for their future, and their willingness to make a commitment. They are committing to one another. They are committing to life, to positivity, to hope. They are accepting the future even in the face of uncertainties of the world about. This commitment seems all the more important against the backdrop of the current state of our society. I enjoy talking to the parents of the bride or groom. There is great happiness. The wedding seems an affirmation of all they worked for. Years of tuition payments. Orthodontic appointments. Little League baseball on Sundays. Car pools. Bar Mitzvah lessons. A year in Yeshiva in Israel. Three additional years of college. All the investments of time, effort, and money have paid off. The show of love over the past 22 years TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225
was all worth it. Your son (or daughter) is now sharing his love, the love that he learned from you and his family, with his new partner. There are some interesting trends that I have seen among couples getting married. They want to do it right. There is a whole slew of artists who have created dozens of beautiful forms for Ketubot. The couples want to grace their new homes with the traditional text of the wedding contract beautifully and artistically painted and filled out. One brideto-be whose ancestors come from the Island of Rhodes, just like mine, asked me how she might get an artist to replicate an ancient Ketuba from the Jewish Museum in Rhodes. It was not enough just to get a beautiful Ketuba, she wanted to have a Ketuba that her great-grandparents might have had. Other couples spend extra time to choose the exact right Hebrew melodies for the ceremony. It is not enough just to have the traditional verses read, couples want memorable melodies sung by memorable voices. There is a principle in Judaism of Hidur Mitzvot, not just celebrating the traditions, but observing the traditions in the most beautiful way. Hidur Mitzvot describes how many of these young couples are approaching their weddings. Tradition is alive. The receipt of invitations tells me that there is indeed hope. The actions of these young couples inspire the rest of us. It is not a time to give up. It is a time to make commitments. It is a time for optimism. It is a time for hope. It is a time to think about and plan for the future. These young couples are showing courage. They are bucking the trends of society. They are rejecting the rejectionism that surrounds them. They are celebrating life. And to that, let’s say Mazel Tov! Robert J. Rome, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in clinical practice in Encino, California.

JEWISH HUMOR
It’s funny because we say so!
You’re Fired! The Kosher Leather Company Ltd felt it was time for a shake-up and advertises for a new Managing Director. Morris gets the job.
Morris then hands the man $340 in cash and shouts, "Here's a week's pay. Get out of here and don't let me see you here again."
Morris is determined to rid the company of all slackers. On his first tour of the factory, he sees a young man leaning against a wall. The area is full of production workers and he thinks this is a good time to let them all know he means business. Morris walks up to the man and asks, "How much money do you make a week?" The young man looks at Morris and replies, "I make $340 a week. Why do you want to know?"
Feeling pretty good about his first dismissal, Morris looks around and asks, "Does anyone want to tell me what that guy did here?"
10 AUGUST 2011
With a smile on his face, one of the workers replied,: "He’s the pizza delivery guy!”

Soup to Nuts
Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered Grap Juice Q. What is the minimum percentage of grape juice mixture to require the bracha of hagafen? A. If the grape juice is pure (without water or other ingredients added by the manufacturer), then as long as there is at least 1 part grape juice for (just under) every 6 parts of water (about 14%) the bracha is hagafen. If there was more water than that, then the bracha is shehakol.
Plastic Q. I am doing research on plastic and understand that you permit Formica and other plastic countertops to be kashered by hag’alah. I would appreciate any sources or teshuvos used in making this psak. A. Some Poskim and hashgachos accept the ruling of Iggeros Moshe (OC 2:92 & 3:58) that synthetic materials cannot be kashered because we have no tradition as to whether the standard kashering process is acceptable. However, the cRc and most American and Israeli hashgachos follow the opinion of Rav Henkin (Am HaTorah, Cycle 1, Volume 10, page 5), Tzitz Eliezer (4:6:3) and Minchas Yitzchok (3:67) who permit the kashering of plastic, assuming it is strong enough to withstand the rigors of the kashering process. They hold that all materials may be kashered unless the Torah specifically states that they cannot be (as it does with cheress/ceramics).

tablecloths. Twist ties may be Opening containers Q. What is the cRc’s policy opened by the non-Jews. regarding opening food on Shabbos that are sealed such as Coke, bag of salad, or sugar packets. Can I open them myself, ask a non-Jew, or open it before Shabbos? What is the reason why I have to do this? A. There is a disagreement between the Poskim as to which containers may or may not be opened on Shabbos, and we have not taken an official policy as to whether a Jew may or may not open these items. For more details on this question, you might want to read the article by Rabbi Jachter which can be found at http://bit.ly/ouuLD1. For a final decision on this and similar questions we encourage you to speak to your local Orthodox Rabbi. The cRc has taken a stand on this question as relates to asking a non-Jew to open the container, because that question is one that is relevant to caterers who we certify as kosher. Our policies for them are: Individual packets of packets of coffee, sweetener, whitener whose packaging has many words written on it should not be used because it is virtually impossible to open these packages without cutting through words. Cans may not be opened on Shabbos. Whenever possible, bottles should be opened before Shabbos, but if not, a non-Jew may do so on Shabbos. The same applies to aluminum foil, Saran Wrap, and disposable
KOSHER ALERTS Contrary to statements made on their website and in their stores, the cRc does not certify any Red Mango products or locations. Several breads from Today’s Temptations (Chicago, IL) are not kosher certified. Only those Today’s Temptations products bearing the cRc on the label are certified kosher and are pareve and pas yisroel. Some jars of Silver Spring Cream Style Horseradish, Silver Spring Foods, Eau Claire, WI mistakenly bear an OU, without the D. This certified product contains dairy and should be labeled OU-D. The company is withdrawing this product from the marketplace for relabeling. Some individually wrapped S’mores Granola Bars, The Quaker Oats Co., Chicago, IL mistakenly bear an unauthorized OU-D. This product is not kosher. The item in question can be found in both cartons of S’mores and Variety Pack cartons. Corrective action is being taken. The other varieties of Granola Bars are correctly labeled OU-D. A small quantity of OU certified Planters Brittle Nut Medley was labeled without the “D”. Brittle Nut Medley contains yogurt covered raisins that are OU Dairy. Corrective measures were implemented

In a Month We Call -“Av” By Rabbi Label Lam
T
hey sat to eat food; they raised their eyes and they saw, behold a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, their camels bearing spices, balsam and lotus - on their way to bring them down to Egypt. (Breishis 37: 25) Why does the verse reveal their burden? To let you know the reward for the righteous, because it is the way of the Arabs to only carry harsh smelling fuels and for this one spices were prepared so that he would not be damaged by the bad smell. (Rashi) A question popped up in Chumash class just last week! Joseph is about to be cast away into a twenty-two year exile where he will endure false accusations and imprisonment. Where is the super duper reward for the righteous? Sure, he gets bumped to first class, but where’s the flight headed? Rabbi Moshe Weinberger has often spoken about how his father had managed to bring a pair of Tefillin into the infamous concentration camp of Mathausen. During the time he was interred there, he and many others managed to put on this particular pair of Tefillin. He told his son on the occasion of his Bar Mitvah that two times, for the purpose of delousing, all the inmates were made to remove all their clothing. He was forced to part with the beloved Tefillin. However after the bulldozer passed by pushing all the refuse to the side -behold, his Tefillin were there to be reclaimed. He puts on those same Tefillin till this very day. Although all seemed so bleak at times, he survived with a sense he was not alone. I took a trip recently to Israel so that my son might put on his Tefillin for the first time, thirty days before his Bar Mitzvah, at the Western Wall. On the very last day of our ten day stay we went to visit Yad Vashem –The Holocaust Museum. It was packed with visitors of all types and stripes that day. As we moved from exhibit to exhibit we found
ourselves becoming more and more emotionally impacted by what we were witnessing. At one point I was standing next to a smallish man with a Yarmulka. He was with his family. I glanced down and noticed numbers tattooed on his arm. I shouldered up to him. Without a word of exchange he looked in my direction nodding his head and confirmed, “Auschwitz!” I told the man that we came to Israel so my son, who just began his career of wearing Tefillin might gather as many blessings as possible from great Rabbis and Tzadikim and that the Klausenberger Rebbe ztl. had said that if one wants to know from whom it is worthy to receive a blessing, find someone with numbers on his arm and he still puts on Tefillin. I asked him if he wouldn’t mind blessing my boy. He lit up with joy and a tearful sincerity and he blessed him. We treasure that encounter and value the blessing. We can only imagine the enormity of the personal angst and torment Joseph experienced on his way down to the depths of his personal exile in Egypt. To be torn away from his father by his brothers, all at once like that, must have hurt him very deeply. Then a small drop of goodness enters his otherwise dreary universe- The pleasant aroma of spices surrounds him and the awareness- These are Ishmaelites. Their usual load consists of harsh smelling spices. He is not just briefly comforted but rather forever fortified. He is not alone. The suffering is not meaningless. His Father- in Heaven is orchestrating even this unpleasant event for some greater good. How true!? Maybe it’s only a Tzadik who can catch an ever so subtle sign in a world in which subtlety seems lost. Or perhaps, like finding a blessing in the gloomiest of places like a Holocaust Museum or in the Holocaust itself, this is what we can all hope to connect with in a month we call -“Av”!
