Child’s Play

BY JOSH LINKNER WWW.JOSHLINKER.COM I recently spent some time laughing hysterically while playing board games with my kids. There’s nothing better than watching a kid unleash an enormous laugh, is there? It got me thinking about the many things we can learn from child’s play that apply directly to our lives today as harddriving, world-conquering, eat nails-forbreakfast adults: 1. You Need a Challenge. With nearly every game ending in a tie, the primitive and simple game of tic-tac-toe gets old in about three minutes. That’s because human growth and fulfillment come in the midst of challenge. “A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner”, the English proverb states. We are meant to take on complex challenges, gaining confidence through achievement. If you are feeling stretched, this is a good sign and indicates you are becoming stronger and more powerful. Conversely, if you find yourself punching the clock and mastering your surroundings, it’s time to push yourself to a more challenging game. 2. Listen to Your Instincts. Remember the game “You’re Getting Warmer” where one kid is blindfolded and has to find another. With each step, the other kids chant “you’re getting warmer” or “you’re getting colder.” Try playing this game by yourself. It turns out we have an incredible ability to tap into our own intuition if we simply listen. When you make various choices in life, your instincts tell you if you’re getting warmer or colder. Deep inside, you know if your moves are driving you closer to your life’s vision or if your choices are destructive and luring you away from reaching your potential. Kids listen to their intuition, but we adults often fail to hear. 3. Playing the Game is the Fun Part. Imagine you’re “it” in a game of hide-and-seek, but when

12 DECEMBER 2012

you open your eyes everyone is in plain sight. Sure, you “won” the game but it certainly wasn’t enjoyable. As adults, we are often so focused on future outcomes that we fail savor the moment. In the midst of the game with the rush of uncertainty, we find joy and delight. When the game is over, kids insightfully say, “let’s play again!” It’s time to start enjoying the journey instead of postponing our happiness. 4. It’s Best When It’s Your Turn. Every kid wants to go first because they get to be the active driver of their experience. Knowing this, why do so many of us relinquish our power and allow life to happen “to” us? Studies show that happiness at work is often linked to jobs where individuals have more autonomy. Of course, this same principle goes far beyond our careers. We’re wired to be the architects of our own existence, not the subjects of others. In an era with nearly limitless possibility, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be calling your own shots. In today’s turbulent times, many of us are in a state of imbalance, stress, or even panic. Yet sometimes the most potent insights are right in front of us. As my 14-year-old son likes to tell me, “get your head in the game, Dad.” Go ahead. It’s your turn to spin the wheel.

The Meaning of Miracles By Rabbi Yehudah Prero www.torah.org Miracles. That is what the holiday of Chanukah is all about. The triumph of the weak over the strong. One day's worth of oil lasting for eight days. Miracles are events out of the normal course of everyday life. The B'nai Yisaschar's explanation of the nature of miracles illuminates the uniqueness of our holiday celebration. The Hebrew word for miracles is "Nes." The B'nai Yisaschar defines a "nes" as an action, from G-d, that is supernatural. The word "nes" also means the sail of a boat. The sail of a boat towers over the boat from above. The sail enables the boat to move along, to travel in a path. A miracle is an outward display of G-d's divine providence. G-d's providence directs the movement of our lives, and keeps us on the paths we have chosen. When one looks up at the billowing sail of a boat, one can see that there is a force controlling which way the boat is traveling. When a person experiences a miracle, it becomes clear that there is a force controlling the direction of his life. The choice of the word "nes" to encapsulate the meaning behind a supernatural occurrence should not be lost on us. The word "nes" is a short one. It is composed of two letters: "nun" and "samech." The Talmud (Berachos 4b) writes : Rav Yochanan says: Why is there no "nun" in Ashrei (Psalm 145, which is arranged alphabetically, except that the verse beginning with the letter "nun" is missing)? Because the fall of Israel's enemies (euphemistic for Israel) begins with it, for it is written (Amos 5:2): Fallen (which in Hebrew begins with "nun") is the virgin of Israel, she shall rise no more. . . .Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak says: Even so, David refers to it by divine inspiration and promises them an uplifting, for it is written (Psalms 145:14): Hashem supports (which in Hebrew, begins with "samech") all the fallen ones.

20 DECEMBER 2012

The letter "nun," as the Talmud states, represents downfall, suffering, and misfortune. The letter "samech," which in the alphabet, and in the word "nes," follows "nun," represents uplifting, salvation, and redemption. A miracle, a "nes," is the combination of these two elements: we are faced with trials and tribulations, and our situation is perilous. Yet, through divine providence, a supernatural occurrence rescues us and provides us with salvation. The word "nes" is a reminder of the ups and downs in life and the role that G-d has in our lives. Chanukah, as the prayer Al HaNissim recites, celebrates the delivery of the strong into the hands of the weak, the many into the hands of the few, . . . the wicked into the hands of the righteous. This victory sent a message that resonates until this day: our victories and successes in life, while brought to fruition through our efforts, are truly a result of divine providence. When the odds are against us, we can still prevail. When we have reached a point from where we believe we can go no lower, when our situation is dire, we should not despair. Salvation can come. A one-day supply of oil can last for eight days. Small bands of ordinary people can defeat trained warriors in battle. Miracles can happen. It is up to us to recognize them and appreciate them. Merely reflecting on the meaning of the word for miracle can enhance that appreciation. TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

INSECTS IN BARLEY RECENT INFESTATION – NOVEMBER 6, 2012

In recent weeks, consumers and kashrus professionals have noticed an unexpected increase of insects in barley. After inspecting many pounds of barley from an assortment of manufacturers sold in the local Chicago area stores frequented by kosher consumers, we have come to the following conclusions: • Three distinct types of insects were discovered: a tan-colored worm, a black crawling insect, and a black fast-crawling insect with wings. Each insect was approximately half as long as a barley kernel, and most could be seen crawling. See http://1.usa.gov/UkRxBt and http://bit.ly/UkRoxT for pictures and descriptions of the insects. • Some packages of barley were completely free of insects and others were heavily infested. • Certain brands and dates of manufacture seem to be more infested than others. In our Chicago community, the Jewish-owned stores have agreed to remove some of the most heavily infested produce from the store shelves, but other lesser-infested produce remains. For consumer looking for yoshon barley, we have found that Gefen barley with a date code of “07/02/14 Yoshon” (being sold in local stores) appears to consistently have little or no infestation. This and all other vari28 DECEMBER 2012

eties should still be checked, as described below. The infestation is not limited to Chicago and has also been reported in other communities. • The incidence of infestation did not seem to depend on the store where the barley was being sold. • Due to the fact that infestation generally occurs after the grain is packaged, infestation was found even in containers bearing a reliable kosher logo. We therefore recommend that during the months of November and December 2012 kosher consumers inspect their barley before using it, as per the following procedure: • Place a small pile of barley – an ounce or two at a time – on a white plate or other surface. • Use a finger or credit card to drag a small amount of barley away from the pile, spreading that barley in a single layer. •Visually inspect the spread-apart barley to be sure there are no insects between or under the kernels. • Repeat the latter two steps until the entire pile has been checked. Then repeat the steps for the rest of the barley in the package. Visit http://bit.ly/Y7tdbc for a short video which demonstrates the above procedure and shows some pictures of insects to be alert for. • If a significant number of insects are found in a package, the entire package should be discarded or returned to the store. Otherwise, the barley may be used after inspection. • The above procedure should be followed for barley, mixes which include barley (e.g. cholent mix, soup mix), and barley in any other form. It is also prudent to follow the above procedures for all small grains, such as barley, rice and oats, at all times. Consumers who will store barley or other grains for extended amounts of time (e.g. for yoshon use) are advised to store such products in the refrigerator or freezer so as to prevent infestation. In the coming weeks, we intend to continue monitoring the situation and will issue updated directions as needed. the scope of this article.] TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

That's Chanukah By Rabbi Label Lam www.torah.org

It was the last day of Chanukah on a Sunday. We got the call early in the morning. The house was filled with excitement. A young lady we knew very well, who is now a mother of a wonderful Jewish family, was studying for conversion at that time and she had finally gotten the “go ahead”. When she called us that morning she enthusiastically shared with us her beautiful new Jewish name, and invited us to a small Chanukah party. My wife and I made the long trek out to Long Island. She was brimming with joy surrounded by supportive families and friends. The table was filled with brunch goodies and we all sat down to eat -sing and celebrate. At one moment one of the lead Rabbis there nudged me gently and said," Nu Reb Label, say something!" I have to admit I was woefully unprepared for the sudden invitation. I asked him if we can sing another song and we did. During the musical interlude a question occurred to me that I am not sure if I heard from a reliable source or if I had thought of it myself. I apologize for not remembering. This is

34 DECEMBER 2012

what I shared! Why is this day, the eighth day of Chanukah titled" Zos Chanukah”? Of all the days of Chanukah, that name" Zos Chanukah", why should the eighth day after all the candles are extinguished be called" Zos Chanukah"!? Usually the word Zos or Zeh – “this” is reserved for times when there’s something to point to. When the Jewish people went through the split sea they declared, "This is my G-d…" Rashi tells us that they all witnessed loftiest of visions... When Moshe was introduced to the Mitzvah of the new month he was told," this month is for you…" Again we are informed by Rashi that Moshe was shown a sliver of the moon. In each case the word "Zeh"–"this" means something was at hand. Similarly when a Torah scroll is lifted in synagogue congregants gather around and point with their finger while reciting, "This is the Torah that Moshe placed before the children of Israel by G-d through the agency of Moshe" Many are careful to position themselves to see the script inside the scroll while indicating with TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

a finger. Why? So the declaration should be truthful.

when education has taken place?

Why is this time without visuals called “Zos Chanukah”? The simple answer is that over the course of the eight days of Chanukah we read in the Torah about the inaugural activities of the heads of the tribes which concludes on the eighth day of Chanukah when we say," this is the inauguration of the altar”. It is followed by Aaron’s invitation to light the menorah of the Tabernacle. It is because of those words,"Zos Chanukas HaMizbeach” “this is the dedication of the altar”- this day is titled based on the first two words," Zos Chanukas...". Still there must be something more.

One of my Rebbes used to tell us that the final exam, the symptom that Torah learning has been absorbed into psyche of the student is when one sees how they behave in the dining room and with each other after the classes are complete. Here too, after the lights are out, after eight full days of lighting the Chanukah candles, after all the scholastic activities are concluded a burning question remains. Somebody once came to a great Rabbi and boasted with extra pride, "Rabbi, I finished the entire Talmud!" The Rabbi, sensing his haughty attitude answered him sharply, “And what did the Talmud teach you?!"

Chanukah is an expression of -Chinucheducation. How do we know when education has taken place? Sure when we look into the classroom and watch the teachers teaching the students learning we assume that that's education. However, that might just be the process of education. How can we measure

After eight days of lighting the Chanukah candles, eight full days of expressing dedicationhonoring the education process, we might wonder," what have the candles ignited in us?!" When all the lights are out and there is no one there to watch, when all the teacher-types have retreated, then what remains, that's Chanukah!

I must say that no spinning, weight lifting, dancing, yoga, or anything else can be as challenging and rewarding as Marci's workout! Its complete and total conditioning of your body. You will get to do an exercise for every single muscle in a different way! Also, its a pleasure to be working out with an incredibly positive and warm person that charges your batteries for a whole day. Nelly G. – Chicago "My wife is 50+ and has been working out at Marci's boot camp for two months. If you ask her, she would talk about her improved skin tone and the 11 pounds and 2.5 inches off her waist that she has lost. But if you ask me, what I've really noticed is her boost in energy and how much better she feels about herself. She has tried losing weight before, but there is something about Marci's program that has engaged my wife and kept her motivated where others have not. Most importantly, Marci's program has helped my wife to have a healthier life and that is a great gift to our family". A.S. Husband on behalf of my wife – Skokie "I have been with Marci for about 2 years. It is the best workout in the one hour we have together that combines cardio, weight training and toning all in one. For those of us who have minimal time, this is the most effective way to get into shape and stay fit and healthy. Marci makes it fun and upbeat, and always motivating. I love it and what it does for me." Roz I. – Chicago "Marci's boot camp has been a life changing experience for me. I have been going to the gym for about 12 years before starting with Marci and I have never seen the results like I am seeing now. Her enthusiasm and encouragement goes along way! Marci you rock!" It is a good thing that she goes to Marci's everyday to exercise so that she is strong enough to hold me up!" Shia - age 4 - Skokie

"When I started working out with Marci I was so out of shape I was out of breath during the warm up exercises. Now-at the age of 52, I am in the best shape of my life. Marci is always finding new ways to push me to my limit. Whether it is in a boot camp class or private session, the exercise routines are always exciting and fun, combining aerobics, weights and more! Never been so committed to working out and enjoying it this much!" Alida H. – Chicago "I started working out with Marci a few months after having my first baby and have never felt better. Her workouts are efficient, customized, encouraging, and thorough. I always leave feeling that I have toned every part of my body, and I consistently receive positive comments from friends, family, and co-workers on my appearance!" Ellen – Chicago "Marci forces you to use more than 1 muscle group at a time. She utilizes the hour and makes every minute count! 1 hour with Marci can equal 2-3 hours at the gym. Thanks Marci. Your the best!" Simcha A. – Chicago “OMG. My wedding dress needed to be re-altered! I started training with Marci before my wedding to tone up. What a surprise I got at my final fitting when my dress was too big and had to be taken in. I never looked & felt this great! Thank you Marci. Your amazing!” D. K. - Lakeview "Marci is an exemplary trainer. She's smart and knows her stuff. I know I am safe with Marci and I'll never be hurt or pushed inappropriately. At each session, she meets me where I am and brings me along to a level of fitness I never knew possible. I've lost inches and pounds and most of all, I FEEL GREAT!" Rena C. – Chicago “I've been training with Marci for about 2 years. I've seen that every single time I train with Marci, I ALWAYS see and feel great results. Marci's positive, cheerful and warm personality makes my work out all that more enjoyable! I have tried Zumba, gym memberships, aerobics and they're all good, but bootcamp firms and tones your muscles in a way like no other exercise.” L. W. – Highland park

JEWISH HUMOR ItĂŠs funny because we say so!

The Bubby Last year, just before Hanukkah, Miriam, a Bubby was giving directions to her grown up grandson who was coming to visit with his wife. 'You come to the front door of the condominium complex. I am in apartment 2B.' Miriam continued, 'There is a big panel at the door. With your elbow push button 2B. I will buzz you in. Come inside, the elevator is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow hit 2. When you get out I am on the left. With your elbow, hit my doorbell.'

'Grandma, that sounds easy,' replied Jonathan, the grandson, 'but why am I hitting all these buttons with my elbow.' To which she answered, 'You're coming to visit empty handed?'
