WRITING MEGILLAHS By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob
P
urim’s in the air. This holiday, perhaps even more than others, presents many opportunities for parental teaching. Lots of family time, lots of teachable moments. Some ideas to share: 1) Hashem takes care of us, even when it doesn’t feel that way. And He loves us, always. Period. In spite of our belief, at times, that we don’t deserve it. 2) Sometimes it can take many years to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, pieces that we would never have guessed belonged to this puzzle. 3) We’re one people, we need to take care of each other, and look for ways to demonstrate this oneness. It feels good to give “Mishloach Manos” to others, to friends we know and to 12 FEBRUARY 2012
friends we haven’t met yet, and to give generously to those in need, declaring, by our actions, the truth that we’re all Hashem’s children. 4) The things that are invisible often matter most, looking beneath the surface, seeing with our heart instead of our eyes to discern the beauty within. That the world is full of costumes, the masks of this superficial world where physical strength, armies, weapons, dictators, politicians, and money are perceived as powerful, while the only true power, Hashem, is ignored. Hidden behind a curtain called nature, Hashem waits for us to reach out, pull the curtain away, and open our eyes to see His hand in the world, and in the stories of our lives. When I was nine years old I had a verbally abusive teacher who made it very clear that he TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225
had no regard for me as a person. That I wasn’t smart enough or diligent enough, using words such as, “stupid” or “idiot” in his descriptions. I think though, that it was his tone of disgust that hurt most. He made school an unsafe place for me. Looking back I can say that being in his class was probably the most painful time in my life. And yet… When I really think about those days the pain tends to be overshadowed by other considerations. Because every night of that school year before falling asleep I would talk to Hashem, unburden myself, sometimes cry, and ask for His help. So, while the memories are still painful, they are somehow sweetened by the knowledge that it was at this very time that I began my life-long relationship with G-d. That Hashem wasn’t an idea, or an abstract concept. Hashem was real and I could have a relationship with Him. I felt listened to, cared about, held, and loved. It’s been forty five years since that time and even
though it took close to 40 years to forgive the teacher for his words, I know that within that difficult, difficult period was the hidden hand of Hashem. And it was holding mine. This is perhaps one chapter in my personal Megillah. Another would be the story of how my wife and I met, with all the details that needed to fall into place, for that to happen. A third might tell the stories of my parents who miraculously survived the Holocaust. We all have Megillahs to write. We need to follow Esther’s and Mordechai’s lead, connect the dots, fit in the pieces of the puzzle as best we can, write our own Megillah, and pass it down to our children and grandchildren to write their own chapters.
Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought.

Soup to Nuts
Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered KIWI BERRIES Q. What is the bracha on kiwi berries? A. The bracha rishonah is borei pri ha’eitz.
KNIFE TO CUT A BAGEL Q. Can I use the knife in my office’s kitchen to cut a bagel? I have no idea if the knife was previously used by one of the non-Jews to cut something non-kosher. A. If the bagel is cold and the knife is clean, the bagel cut with that knife will remain kosher even if the knife had previously been used to cut hot non-kosher foods. Accordingly, one might think that they could cut their bagel with the knife. However, due to the possible mistakes that may occur, Rema (OC 451:1 and YD 121:5 & 7) cites a custom to not use non-kosher utensils in this manner on an ongoing basis. This means that if occasionally (i.e. less than once a month) you need to cut a bagel or other cold food with the clean nonkosher knife you’d be allowed to, but you shouldn’t make it a regular practice to do so.
MALT IN YOSHON PRODUCTS Q.I read that it is debatable
A service of the Chicago Rabbinical Council 2701 West Howard | 773-465-3900
whether people who are machmir on yoshon need to be concerned about malt put into flour. I’m just trying to understand what is debated before I decide what to do myself. Is it for sure batel? Is it maybe not batel because chodosh a davar sheyesh lo matirim (something which will eventually become permitted – in this case, after Pesach – and therefore not eligible for bitul)? A. A very small amount of malt is put into flour and it is almost always batel b’shishim. Although you are correct that a davar sheyesh lo matirim cannot be batel, that is limited to a mixture of min b’mino (i.e. like items) and does not apply to a mixture of malt and flour (see Shulchan Aruch YD 102:1). It is also noteworthy that due to the length of the malting process, chodosh malt does not come to market until very late in the “yoshon season”. Accordingly, many people who are particular to only eat yoshon are lenient and will consume flour without first ascertaining if the malt is chodosh. Whether you should choose to follow this ruling is something that you should discuss with your own Rabbi.
