Are we there yet? By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob
F
or many years when our children were young, we would drive once or twice a year from Chicago to New York, to visit our family there. “Are we there yet?”, “Are we almost there?”, “Well, when will we be there?” were questions heard many times during those long trips, often accompanied by an exaggerated sigh or a whining tone. The focus was on the destination, the excitement of being in New York, seeing family, receiving presents, and so on. The challenge for us, as parents, was how to survive the trip, with not too many arguments, or tears, and how to make the time pass quickly, with the least damage possible. I often think about those trips at this time of year, in connection with the holiday of Shavuos. This isn’t because we travelled on Shavuos, we didn’t, but rather it’s that Shavuos itself evokes those images. To be more accurate, it is the name of this holiday that is evocative. “Chag Shavuos”, the Festival of Weeks, a name that seems so dissatisfying in capturing the essence of the anniversary of what is arguably the most important day in the history of mankind. The Ten Commandments. G-d spoke to us! To an entire nation, man, woman, and child. He shared His divine wisdom with us, the Torah, written, and oral. The owner’s manual for life and the roadmap to bringing holiness into a physical world, the guide to self-growth, and to developing a real and meaningful, intimate relationship with G-d. And all of this is somehow summed up with a reference to a passing of time, the seven weeks from Passover to Shavuos, the counting of those 49 days linking the two holidays to each other. The name feels anticlimactic. Why use a name that draws attention to the weeks leading up to that great day, while ignoring the day itself ?

And this is the part that triggers those memorable road trips. The question “Are we there yet” is a valid one if the trip is nothing more than getting from point “A” to point “B”, with the journey having no intrinsic value. A means to an end only, with the end being everything, and the means, nothing. Shavuos speaks to us that the Torah approach to life is different. In Judaism, the journey counts, we count each step and the focus is on what we did in the process, growing as a people, unified, speaking in one voice, ready to hear the word of G-d, and to commit ourselves to living lives governed by that word. So, we stood at Sinai and looked back at the road, the journey of seven weeks, and perhaps looked even further back to the years of suffering in Egypt, all part of the journey, the process that brought them to this incredible moment. The hard work, the pain, the focus on growing, as individuals, as families, and as a people. To be totally frank, it’s not just children. We all ask “Are we there yet” when we lose sight of “now”, and our focus is the vacation, or the weekend. Perhaps it’s looking for a new car, or an i-phone. We need to remember the opportunities of the everyday. The moments with which we build a happy home. Happiness is found in the journey, the every day quiet moments of our lives. Sharing laughter with a child, a loving word spoken to one’s spouse, an act of kindness to a fellow human being, a sincere, meaningful prayer to G-d. The road trip is filled with endless opportunities, each an end in itself. The destination is the journey. Perhaps, the answer to the question of “Are we there yet” is… yes. We are always there. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought.

Calorie Shake
kosher certification. However,
intensive exercise and bodybuilding. His regiment requires him to consume an enormous number of calories – between 5,000 and 7,000 per day. He says that obtaining these calories by eating many regular meals is not feasible, and to meet the needs of athletes there are special “calorie shakes” that athletes drink during the day. The problem is that he has not found such a supplement with a Hechsher (except for some that are high in soy, which he cannot tolerate). Can you provide us with some guidance? A. All such products require a reliable hashgachah. I am not aware of the particular ones available, and you may want to try www.koshervitamins.com as they may have something suitable.
merely a sugary coating that doesn’t need hashgachah and not a flavored one that would. You can tell what the coating is made of by looking at the list of inactive ingredient where you’ll either see “flavor” listed (or something similar) or just sweeteners (e.g. Sucrose).
Q. I have a student who does in most cases the coating is
Coated Pills Q. Some non-chewable pills have a sweet coating to help the pill go down more smoothly, but if one chewed the pill it would presumably be bitter [from the inner content]. Is this considered an “edible pill” which requires hashgachah or is it still like other pills that can be used regardless of the ingredients? A. There are different ways to view those types of coatings, and most consider them to be edible coatings (on an inedible pill) which require
Herbs Q. Why is it that fresh herbs must be checked for infestation but dried herbs are permitted without any checking? Is it because the companies clean the herbs really well before they dry and sell them?
A. The factories do clean and sterilize the herbs somewhat before they package them, but that cleaning is usually not thorough enough to meet our standards for the removal of bugs. The herbs are acceptable for kosher use for an entirely different reason. Shulchan Aruch YD 84:8 rules that 12 months after a bug is “born” it becomes permitted because by that point it has surely died and dried out to the point that it is no longer a forbidden fooditem. It is generally accepted to follow the lenient opinions cited in Darchei Teshuvah 84:102 that the same leniency applies to bugs which were mechanically dried (in less than 12 months). Therefore, even if the herbs were infested, the drying-process effectively renders the bugs as “kosher” and the herbs can be eaten as-is.
KOSHER ALERTS Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream and Desserts, 4041 Dempster Street, Skokie, IL is now under the cRccholov stam. Please be advised that POPPA D’S NUTS (Orlando, FL) distributed in 7Eleven stores bears an unauthorized OK symbol on the label. This product is not certified by the OK. The cRc would like to welcome GR8 Event Catering (3149 West Devon, Chicago, IL 847-212-2510) The newest Slurpee flavors are Fanta Mixed Berry, aka Fanta Berry Blaster and Fanta Lime Vanilla being sold as Summertime Lime are kosher and pareve. However, Icebreakers sugar free blueberry is kosher but is dairy (cholov Stam). This flavor is not being sold at the 7-Eleven on Touhy and California as that store’s slurpee machine is under the cRc and they are only permitted to sell kosher- pareve flavors at that location. Although cRc certified during the majority of the year, certain packages of products manufactured by the following companies may have the cRc logo removed or covered during a period after Passover. Please be careful to check those products as the cRc does not certify those specific items unless the cRc is on each package: Bulldog Bakery, Today's Temptations, Eli's Cheesecake. The labels on the Butter Toffee Peanuts under the Old Mill brand of Menard’s were mistakenly printed without the “dairy” designation. The product is indeed certified cRc – Dairy (Cholov Stam). The Garlic & Onion Snack Mix under the Old Mill brand of Menard’s bears an unauthorized cRc logo.

SIX MINUTES As you may know, in a slalom race the skier must pass through about 20 "gates" in the fastest time. Well it happened that Israel had the fastest slalom MAY skier in the world and had great exghrz, pectations for an 6:58p.m. Olympic gold medal. Came the day of the final, the crowd waited in anticipation. The French champion sped down the course in 38 seconds. The Swiss in 38.7 seconds, the German in 37.8 seconds, the Italian in 38.1 seconds, and then came the turn of the Israeli...the crowd waited, and waited... SIX MINUTES!!! "What happened to you?" screamed his trainer when the Israeli finally arrived. Replied the exhausted Israeli: "Who put mezuzahs on each gate?"
