Chicago Rabbinical Council Guide to Starbucks Beverages Over the years, Starbucks shops have evolved from simple coffee shops to stores that serve many kosher and non-kosher items, with the most serious non-kosher items being hot meat sandwiches. The standard daily clean-up at Starbucks includes a hot wash of all utensils and some parts of that washing are done without soap. This washing process challenges the kosher status of the otherwise kosher products and each product must be judged by a competent halachic authority. When evaluating these issues, Rav Schwartz Shlit”a, Av Beis Din of the cRc, acknowledged that there is basis for being lenient on many of the items being sold at Starbucks stores, but directed the cRc to be true to the mission of a reliable Kashrus Agency which only recommends items that are free of all shailos and not those which are only acceptable b’dieved. Rav Schwartz Shlit”a noted that this is especially true when there is a viable alternative which is not subject to the same shailos, and indeed there are many Starbucks locations that do not serve hot meat sandwiches. These are generally the Starbucks kiosks that can be found in airports, highway rest-stops, supermarkets etc., and at these locations the cRc is able to recommend any drink made from kosher ingredients (even though some items in those stores are not kosher certified). [Please be aware that some kiosks (mostly in department stores) share sinks and other equipment with nearby eateries; those Starbucks facilities have the status of full-service stores noted below.] To fully explain the details, questions, and shailos involved in this issue the cRc printed an analysis of the topic in the Spring 2011 edition of The Journal of Halacha and Contemporary Society, and that article is available on the cRc website. The following list is accurate at this time for stores in the United States, and since the information is subject to change this list should not be used after July 31, 2011. [The list is limited to beverages and does not address foods sold in Starbucks (e.g. sandwiches), or toppings and other items added to beverages.] It is also worth noting that many items sold at Starbucks are dairy and chalav stam.

Notes: A. Shot glasses may have been washed with other non-kosher items. Although some Poskim hold kosher beverages made in glass are still kosher, the cRc recommends purchasing items which are free of all shailos. B. Have espresso made in a disposable cup, instead of into the standard reusable shot glass. C. Metal steaming cup may have been washed with other nonkosher items. D. Cream is purchased regionally and must be checked for kosher certification. E. Check specific flavor for kosher certification (many are). F. Bases are not kosher certified. G. Plastic pitcher used to hot brew the (double-strength) coffee or tea may have been washed with other non-kosher items H. Brew basket may have been washed with non-kosher items. Although the brew basket is only used as a kli sheni, the cRc recommends purchasing items which are free of all shailos. J. French press may have been washed with non-kosher items. K. Caramel sauce is not certified (caramel syrup is certified kosher).

A PARENT’S PROMISES By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob

I will remember that I am your Tatty (father) and that I love you.

more patient. I will think often of Hashem’s attribute of erech apayim (slow to anger).

I will remember that you are a child.

I will set appropriate boundaries for you, for your safety, for your growth, for your ruchniyus, (spiritual growth) and I will not shirk my responsibility. And I will remember that it’s OK for you to be upset with me. I do this out of love.

I will find ways to show you that you are loved. I will say “I love you” more often and I will express it in other ways as well, perhaps with touch, tone of voice, smile, look on my face, and by giving of my time. I will not degrade you, laugh at you, ridicule you in any way. I will say “I am sorry” when I’m wrong. I will criticize less and focus more often on the positives in you. I will look for the big picture, keep perspective, keep my eyes on the prize, the prize of a loving, caring, joyful relationship with you. I will remember that you are fragile, that my words and tone of voice can damage and slice through you, that you are soft even when you act hard. I will not be fooled when you act uncaring. I know different and I will remember. I will tell you directly and assertively when I disagree with you, but not in a rage, and not with sarcasm, and with no eye rolling. I will not hit you, no matter what. I will remember the words of Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe, shlita, that in this era it is prohibited to hit our children, that hitting in anger can lead to their hatred. And the words of my Rebbi, the Rosh Hayeshiva Rabbi Yitzchok Feigelstock, shlita, that in this generation we need to follow the approach of warmth, no hitting. I will smile more to you. I will smile more, period. I will be more open to feel joy about you, to revel in your very existence. And I will display this joy more often. I will respect you. I will respect your feelings, your need for space and privacy. I will respect your dignity. I will respect your opinions and your decisions, though at times I may overrule them (especially in your younger years). I will be more patient. I will be more patient. I will be

10 MAY 2011

I will remember that you are a work in progress, not a finished product, and while your pronouncements may sound secure, confident, finished, they’re not. I will patiently wait for you, with anticipation and some trepidation, through your journey. I will be less concerned with kibbud av (parental respect) and more concerned with kavod habrios (respect for every human being), after all, you are one of my most precious brios, and I will remember the Mishna that respect comes to those who give it to others. I will choose my battles and try to remember that the battles themselves are not personal, but part of the miracle of your growth. And I will learn to bite my tongue more. I will be more loving to Mommy and always respectful to her. I will remember the look on your face when I’ve said something hurtful to her. I will make more effort to bring joy into our family, to bring to our home a spirit of song. I will remember that no matter your age, you still look to me (as I still look to my father, of blessed memory), and what is important is not so much the information I impart to you, but who I am to you. I will not take revenge when I am hurt. Even if you have intentionally hurt me and even if I am so angry, so very angry, I will not respond in kind. I will remember that I am the parent and you are the child. I will try to find quiet and calm. I will not give you the silent treatment, either. I will ask for your apology, but I will not take revenge. I will laugh more. I will be on the lookout to laugh more with you. At times I will try to laugh at myself. I will remember the sparkle in my father’s eyes when he

saw me or introduced me to others, the sparkle that spoke more eloquently than words of his pride. And I will sparkle for you. I will play more with you. I will give you your own time with me everyday even if only for a few minutes. I will learn more with you. And I will try to make this time warm and joyous and not full of tension and anger. I will be determined to be proud of you. I will see your inner beauty, not your grades or how you look, but your neshama, your goodness, your kindness, your unique strengths, skills, and talents. I will remember that each child is different, and children should not be compared to each other. I will love you because you are, not because you do. And not because of what you give to me. I will attempt to bring more joy into Shabbos and Yom Tov (the holidays) and Judaism as a whole. I will remember that it is my simcha (joy) in Torah and mitzvos that will draw you to them, my enthusiasm that will generate yours, and it is my love of Hashem that will deepen your love of Hashem. I will take an interest in your life. If you share it with me, I will feel joy in your joys and sadness in your sorrows. I will not make light of your feelings. I will take you seriously. I will be available for you and will be respectful if you choose not to share.

I will not look at you with disgust. I will not call you names. You are my child. I will not try to break your spirit. I will try to embrace, celebrate and guide your spirit. I will not ignore your suffering. I will put aside my work and my tiredness and my chessed work and even my learning to be there for you, whenever you need me. You are my most important mitzvah. I will look deep into myself and remember how painful childhood and adolescence can be, and I will honor you and support you. I will not abandon you when you need me most, even when it feels like you are pushing me away. I will have more fun with you and I will remember that our shared laughter and love brings the Shechina, G-d’s Presence. I will remember that I am your Tatty, and that I love you.

Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered which items do or do not require bishul Yisroel is Electronic Cigarette Q. Does the juice or flavor for electronic beyond the scope of this article.] What you can cigarettes pose kashrus issues?

A.. Yes. Electronic cigarettes convert a specially formulated liquid into a vapor which the person inhales in a manner that mimics the way one inhales from a traditional cigarette. The liquid (which is sometimes called “juice”, “smoke-juice” or similar names) typically includes kosher-sensitive ingredients such as glycerin and flavors, and since the person imbibes the liquid/vapor, Rav Schwartz said that the liquid must be certified as kosher. We contacted a number of manufacturers who claim to use only kosher raw materials but there is no independent agency who certifies that claim, and therefore we are unable to recommend those products. [As with all medical issues, one should consult with their doctor before deciding to use or not use electronic cigarettes.]

Apricot with Spots Q. I’ve noticed that the dried apricots which I buy often have white or brown spots on them. Are these bugs? They don’t look at all like bugs but what else could they be?

A. Our expert on insect infestation, Rabbi Yaakov M. Eisenbach, checked the spots and confirmed that they are not any form of insect. After researching the issue further, he believes that what you are seeing is a fungal growth which is common in dried apricots. [For more on the fungus please see http://bit.ly/liIT9o and http://bit.ly/l9oc6I.] Bishul Yisroel Q. If I buy a kosher certified product does that mean that it is bishul Yisroel?

A. Certain foods require bishul Yisroel in order to be kosher but many do not, and therefore you should not assume that certified products are necessarily bishul Yisroel. [The exact details of

18 MAY 2011

be sure of is that every reputable hashgachah definitely considers whether each food requires bishul Yisroel and only certifies those in which they either have a Jew participate in the cooking (bishul Yisroel) or decide that bishul Yisroel is not required.

Liquid Eggs Q. How do hashgachos make sure that there are no blood spots in (certified) liquid eggs? Do they have a Mashgiach in the egg company checking every egg?

A. Rema YD 66:5 rules that the minhag is to only check eggs for blood spots “during the daytime”. Rav Herschel Schachter explained that this means to say that the minhag is to check eggs when it is somewhat easy to do, and therefore during the day when there is plenty of sunlight one should check their eggs. However, during the nighttime when it was difficult (in those times) to check for blood spots, there is no requirement to check them. Based on this understanding, the standing policy in most American hashgachos is that at a certified restaurant or caterer the on-site Mashgiach checks all eggs for blood spots, because that is considered “easy” to check such that it falls under the requirements of the minhag. However, in factoryproduced eggs (e.g. liquid eggs, powdered eggs) it is not easily possible to have a Jew stand by and check all eggs, and therefore the minhag does not require one to hire a special Mashgiach just to perform that task. It so happens that in most modern countries the companies will “candle” their eggs and/or use other methods to remove just about all blood spots, and it is therefore rare to find a blood spot in liquid eggs. However, from a halachic perspective that is not required by the minhag (and if it were required then the candlers would not have the ne’emanus required to fulfill it). TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225
