The Most Precious Gift The question has been asked time and again: what exactly is the significance of the Sinai Event? Our Patriarchs studied and taught Torah centuries before the Torah was “given” to the Israelites on the holiday of Shavuot, and—according to Talmudic tradition—our forefathers observed all the mitzvot as well. Yet the “giving of the Torah” at Mount Sinai is considered perhaps the most decisive moment in the history of our nation, a nation whose storied history contains many seminal events. Actually, the key word is the giving of the Torah. Before that fateful sixth of Sivan, we were privy to the wisdom of the Torah, but it did not belong to us. We can compare the Torah to a magnificent palace: before the Sinai Event we were given unlimited access to tour its rooms and enjoy its beautiful architecture and artwork; at Sinai we were handed the deed and keys to the property. The Talmud relates a fascinating episode which powerfully illustrates this point. Rabbi Eliezer the Great disagreed with Rabbi Joshua and the other sages of that generation regarding the susceptibility to impurity of a certain type of stove. Rabbi Eliezer vigorously defended his position, but to no avail—the rabbis refused to accept his position. At one point, a Heavenly Voice reverberated in the study hall: “Why do you argue with Rabbi Eliezer? The halachah (final ruling) always 10 MAY 2012
follows his opinion!” Rabbi Joshua then arose and exclaimed, “The Torah is not in Heaven!” The Torah was given to us at Sinai, and therein it is clearly stated that “the majority prevails.” Since the majority of the earthly sages concurred with Rabbi Joshua’s opinion, the opinion of supernal beings – indeed, the opinion of the Almighty Himself! — is immaterial. Amazingly, the halachah was established according to the majority opinion — and Rabbi Eliezer the Great was excommunicated for refusing to accept the ruling! This, however, does not completely explain the significance of Shavuot. Does this holiday boil down to bragging rights? Does it really matter who “owns” the title to Torah? As long as we are permitted to study Torah, would it be such a great cause of consternation if G‑d actually had a say in determining the halachah?! King Solomon likens the revelation at Sinai to our wedding day—the day G‑d chose us from amongst the nations and wedded us. On the occasion of His marriage, the groom, who was (and remains) madly in love with His bride, could find no greater dowry to give than the Torah, His most precious possession, His crown jewel, His joy and pride. Furthermore, He didn’t suffice with making this treasure available for our use; He lovingly gave this gift completely and unconditionally. This is why Shavuot is so special. It commemorates the day when G‑d gave us the most precious jewel in his treasure house. “Fortunate are the people whose lot is thus!” G‑d’s love for us drove Him to give us his most precious possession. Now how do we reciprocate? We have the two days of Shavuot to contemplate the response to this question . . . By Naftali Silberberg I www.chabad.org TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

Gaining Respect By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob
One of my favorite teachers of all time, a rabbi, used to tell us, "If you want your children to study Torah, then you should study Torah; if you want them to give charity, let them see you giving charity." I am also reminded of a beautiful poem on the wall of my pediatrician's office when I was a little boy, entitled "Children Learn What They Live." The simple truth it expressed was very powerful -- our children learn from our behavior, not from our lectures, from the way we are, not from what we say. So, if you want your kids to respect you, respect your kids. Model respect to them, by showing respect to your spouse, to your neighbors, to people different from you and don't forget to show self-respect as well. There are all kinds of ways to demonstrate respect to your children, in the little things and 14 MAY 2012
in the big ones. Show them that you care about their opinions, and that while you may not always agree with them, their ideas have value. Always respect their dignity, their need for space or privacy, and never belittle them, or laugh at them. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of respectful discipline. When your children push your buttons, when you feel like you're losing it, it is then, at that precise moment that you need to model a sense of calm. By maintaining your dignity, by not getting personal, by not hitting or name-calling, you communicate the incredibly important twin messages of love and respect. In effect, you are saying through your actions: "Even though I am angry at you and even if I am hurt, I will not hurt you. I love you." TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225
When you do something wrong, apologize, because this will build trust, and their respect for you will grow. Assertive parenting is not aggressive parenting, and if your children see how careful you are with their fragile souls, they will learn to be careful of others. Assertive parenting also means being firm and not being afraid to disagree, set limits and provide appropriate negative consequences such as time out, grounding, and so on. Your child doesn't have to agree with you, he/she just needs to feel loved and respected. The parental attitude discussed above begins with the birth of your child. It is the attitude that he/she is a separate entity, not an extension of the parent. It is not the child's job to gratify the needs of the parent, to be the fulfillment of a father's unfulfilled dreams or a mother's never realized wishes. Judaism views the ideal parent-child relationship as one of warmth and closeness as it is the primary vehicle for the transmission of our traditions, values and laws. The Talmud teaches us that this transmission, representing the continuity of our religion, is rooted in the joy and love of its practitioners. Yes, the Torah demands that the child respect his/her parents, but it is the wise parent who knows that forced respect is empty and that true respect grows from within, in an environment of love, approval, and joy. It is our job to help our children respect us, by being worthy of respect, by living lives that we are proud of and by connecting with our kids in a deep, loving, spiritual, joyful way.

The cRc assists pet owners with this task by rePET FOOD Q. Are there any restrictions as to which foods I viewing the formulations of a number of pet foods may feed my pet?
A. Pets are not required to keep kosher (even if they feel like a full fledged member of the family!) and therefore they are permitted to eat non-kosher food. However, there are certain non-kosher foods which we are not only forbidden from eating but we are even enjoined to not have any benefit/pleasure from them. Those foods may not be fed to a pet because when one does so they – the owner – is having a forbidden benefit from the non-kosher food. The lists of foods which have this stricter restriction (known as assur b’hana’ah) include: • Milk and meat which were cooked together (see below). •Chametz on Pesach (and on Erev Pesach after a given time in the morning). • Non-kosher wine or grape juice (according to many opinions, see Shulchan Aruch & Rema YD 123:1, Shach 108:25 & 124:71, Mishnah Berurah 467:33 and Sha’ar HaTziun 467:57). Within the first category (milk and meat cooked together) some of the details are that: • It is limited to beef, lamb, or goat meat (even if they are not kosher), and does not apply to poultry or to non-kosher species (e.g. pork) (Shulchan Aruch YD 87:1 & 3). • It includes most dairy products (e.g. whey, milk powder, casein) but does not apply to lactose (meimei chalav – see Shulchan Aruch YD 87:8, 81:5 and Shach 87:12). • The milk and meat must be cooked together, but if they are merely blended together without heat the mixture is non-kosher but may be fed to pets. Accordingly, when choosing a pet food one must be sure that it does not contain any of the aforementioned items. 20 MAY 2012
made by Evanger’s (see their kosher certificate at http://www.crcweb.org/LOC/Evangers.pdf) and approving of their use for Pesach and year round. Many other pet foods are also acceptable for use by anyone who is familiar with food ingredients and has the patience to review the ingredient panel.
WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE Q. I recently used a Worcestershire sauce on a steak. Afterward, I was looking at the bottle’s ingredients and saw that all the way at the end it says “Contains Anchovies”. I know that anchovies are a type of fish and I also know that the Gemara says that it is dangerous to eat meat (steak) and fish (anchovies) together. I wanted to know if you can shed some light on this before I write an angry email to the people who certified this sauce as pareve.
A. It is true that one may not eat meat and fish together (Shulchan Aruch YD 116:2) but in this case it is permitted because the hashgachah is vouching for the fact that there is so little fish in the sauce that it is halachically insignificant (batel b’shishim). [Pischei Teshuvah 115:3 and Darchei Teshuvah 115:16 & 21 cite Poskim who discuss the propriety of l’chatchilah relying on bitul b’shishim as relates to this specific halacha, and in addition some consider Magen Avraham 173:1 as a contributing factor.] You should however be aware that some Worcestershire sauces contain a more significant amount of anchovies. In those cases, the hashgachah will insist that the sauces be labeled with the word “fish” alongside their logo so that kosher consumers will know to not use the sauce together with meat.
