NOT KEEPING SCORE By Dr. Jerry Lob

My Rebbi, Rabbi Yitzhock Feigelstock, the Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta of Long Beach, had a unique way of advising young couples before they got married. He would meet separately with each of them, sitting first with his student, the new Choson, and say, “You are responsible for 90 percent of the ‘Shalom Bayis’ (marital harmony) in the marriage. Your future wife is only responsible for 10 percent.” And then he would send the young man out and ask for the new Kalah. When she was seated he would first spend a few minutes making small talk, putting her at ease, and then he would tell her, (you probably guessed it) “You are responsible for 90 percent of the ‘Shalom Bayis’ in the marriage and your future husband is only responsible for 10 percent.” You have to understand that Rabbi Feigelstock certainly knew that they would compare notes. When asked about this, he explained that a good marriage, with healthy Shalom Bayis is difficult to achieve, especially in the beginning. Both the husband and the wife need to put in a lot more than 50 percent for the relationship to flourish. And so, he continued, with the couple putting in around 180 percent, hopefully it’ll be enough. Over the years I’ve come to appreciate more and more, his wisdom. Because it’s not only that it takes real commitment and effort to have a close, harmonious relationship, the truth is that married couples are often stuck in an ongoing argument of “who’s working harder?” The Rosh Hayeshiva’s message is really, stop keeping score, it’s not going to be exactly even. Each spouse needs to stay focused on the big picture, the picture of living a life of Shalom Bayis. To be

10 NOVEMBER 2012

fully committed to making the other feel good about him/herself, good about the marriage, and secure in the knowledge that one has the love and respect of the other. A quick disclaimer. If the situation is that one is overwhelmingly giving and the other is overwhelmingly taking, that might not be such a good recipe for Shalom Bayis. My intent here is to talk to the more common experience, where each is working and contributing in many, perhaps different ways to the relationship, but it may not always be even. It ebbs and flows, sometimes one is giving more, and at other times the other is. One may be feeling more depleted and needs his/her spouse to step up and do more. At these times, if you listen closely, you can hear my Rebbi’s encouraging words, “You’re responsible for 90 percent, she’s only responsible for 10.” Commitment to marriage and the 90/10, not keeping score rule, means giving thought to my relationship. And giving thought doesn’t mean making a list of all the things my spouse must change in order for us to have good Shalom Bayis. It means working on my smile, appreciation, compliments, empathy, and warmth. It means limiting my criticisms, to few and far between, only when necessary, and spoken with gentleness and sensitivity. It means working on patience and humility, and it means working on anger management, and communication, both verbal and nonverbal, being careful of my spouse’s dignity, not rolling my eyes or using sarcasm when upset. And it also means living a life of happiness. It doesn’t mean it will be perfect, but it doesn’t need to be, remember? We’re not keeping score.

Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought. TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered CANNED FRUIT VS. CANNED VEGETABLES Q. Someone at your office told me that pure canned fruit (without questionable additives such as fruit juice, colorings, flavors, and not produced in Israel) is acceptable without hashgachah but canned vegetables should only be purchased with proper certification. What’s the difference between them?

A. To answer this question we’ll have to first understand some details of how canned food is processed. In order to assure that canned food is safe to eat, the can is heated in a “retort with the food inside the can so that any dangerous microorganisms or “toxins are destroyed. An even more intense level of heating is required to deal with the more significant danger of “spores which are dormant

microorganisms that are encased in a special shell. The spores per se do not pose a danger, but they must be destroyed so that they do not begin to grow (and produce toxins) when conditions become more favorable. Spores will not grow in foods which are highly acidic (called “high-acid and defined as being a pH of 4.6 or lower) and therefore the spores in those foods do not have to be destroyed. Accordingly, they can be processed with a lower level of heating than is required for low-acid foods. Meat, cheese, pasta and most vegetables (including corn, peas, carrot, beans, and tomatoes) are low-acid foods which require the more sophisticated retorts, and a company that has gone through the expense of purchasing that retort and the effort of having it licensed by the FDA, is likely

to use it for a wide assortment of products. That is to say that even if the company’s primary business is to process simple vegetables, they might rent out the equipment for the processing of tomato sauce or pasta and beef during times that they don’t need the retorts. As a result, canned vegetables require a hashgachah to assure that the equipment is kashered before kosher is produced. On the other hand, most fruits (including pineapple) are high-acid foods which can be processed on a simpler retort and it is common that fruit companies will have their own retort which is dedicated to that one product. Not only is the retort typically dedicated for that product but, in truth, it usually not even suited for the higher-temperature processing required of most non-kosher items (e.g. meat, cheese). [The high-acid retort might be used for foods that contain non-kosher grape juice, colors, or flavors, but that use would not render the equipment non-kosher; the reason for that is beyond the scope of this article.]

Recipes from our kitchen to yours! S'mores Cookies

Ingredients 11 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 1 cup brown sugar, packed ½ cup granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 ½ cups flour 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup mini marshmallows 3 regular sized chocolate bars, broken into pieces 1-2 packages graham crackers, broken into squares

Directions

Preheat oven to 3750. Line 1-2 baking pans with parchment paper. Lay out graham crackers side by side on pans. (You may have to add or remove graham crackers according to how much dough you have.) In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt & cinnamon to combine. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream butter with white & brown sugar until light & fluffy. Add eggs & vanilla & mix until combined. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixer and combine on low speed. Fold in the chocolate chips and marshmallows. Chill dough in refrigerator for 1 hour to overnight. (This step can be skipped.) Place tablespoons of dough on graham crackers about 1 – 1 ½ inches apart. Press down slightly with fingertips. Bake for 5 minutes then remove from oven to press chocolate bar pieces on to the top. You can place as many pieces or as little as you want depending how much chocolate flavor you want. Bake for 5–7 more minutes or until dough is beginning to turn golden brown at the edges. Remove to a wire rack to cool. For clean cutting make sure cookies are completely cool and cut with a sharp knife. Submitted by Rachel Zimmerman

JEWISH HUMOR ItÊs funny because we say so! The First Jewish President The year is 2016 & the US has elected the first woman as well as the first Jewish president, Susan Goldfarb. She calls up her mother after election day and says, 'Mom, I assume you will be coming to my inauguration?' 'I don't think so. It's a ten hour drive, your father isn't as young as he used to be, and my arthritis is acting up again.' 'Don't worry about it Mom, I'll send Air Force One to pick you up & take you home. A limo will pick you up at your door.' 'I don't know. Everybody will be so fancy, what on earth would I wear?' 'Oh Mom,’ replies Susan, 'I'll make sure you have a wonderful gown custom-made by the best designer in NY. ''Honey,' Mom complains, 'you know I can't eat those rich foods you & your friends eat.' The President - to - be responds, 'Don't worry Mom. The entire affair is going to be handled by the best caterer in NY, kosher all the way. Mom, I really want you to come.' So Mom reluctantly agrees and on January 20, 2017, Susan Goldfarb is being sworn in as President of the United States . In the front row sits the new President's mother, who leans over to a senator sitting next to her. 'You see that woman over there with her hand on the Torah, becoming President of the US?' The Senator whispers back, 'Yes I do.' Mom says proudly, 'Her brother is a doctor.'
