The Losing Of Jewish Diversity Can We Reverse the Trend

Master Key 22 The Rabbi Ze'ev reached into his pocket and his heart froze: the paper had disappeared! He distinctly remembered placing it there that morning, but now it was gone....Tears of frustration filled his eyes.

In a few short years as the original immigrants to the United States pass on, no one may recall the special customs, ceremonies, and melodies of the particular Old Country. Dr. Robert J. Rome, Ph.D

The Coronation The cry of the shofar resounds. A profound yet utterly simple cry, a note free of the nuances of logical music. An utterly simple cry that rouses the soul of creation to a renewed commitment to the endeavor of life. Rabbi Simon Jacobson

The Losing of Jewish Diversity: Can We Reverse the Trend? By: Robert J. Rome, Ph.D.

W

hen you walk the streets the Jerusalem, you still can see vestiges of Jewish communities from throughout the world. There is the Italian Synagogue. There are Yemeni congregations, as well as Ethiopian synagogues. There are not just Ashkenazi shuls. There are congregations from virtually every known city where Jews once lived in Europe. The Jews from each of these communities have some chants that are unique to their communities. Some have special dress for the Shabbat and festivals. Each community has its own Siddur. Each has customs unique to the community, whether for a holiday or every day. This Jewish diversity used to be present in many Jewish cities throughout the world. There has been much change in recent decades. When I was growing up in L.A., there were separate Sephardi communities for the Syrian community, for the Moroccan communities, for the Jews from Rhodes, for the Jews from Turkey, and more. There were Ashkenazi synagogues for Jews primarily from Budapest, from Prague, or from specific communities in Poland or Russia. Many of these separate sub-communities have disappeared. We now have fewer communities that divide differently, like a synagogue for Ladino-speaking Sephardim and one or two for Moroccan Jews, as well as large Ashkenazi shuls that serve geographical areas like Pico-Robertson or Beverly-La Brea, instead of shuls which reflect different geographical traditions. There still are small separate communities representing Persian Jews from separate cities in Iran as these communities are fairly new to Los Angeles and have not gone through the transformation other, more established communities have experienced. But otherwise, the great diversity is being blurred. So much is being lost. Communities used to be linked by language. The Ladino and Yiddish languages are now in danger of extinction. Except for Hebrew being spoken in some Israeli communities and Farsi in some Persian congregations, the same English language is spoken in most communities, from the Syrian community to the formerly Hungarian communities. In a few short years as the original immigrants to the United States pass on, no one may recall the special customs, ceremonies, and melodies of the particular Old Country. What makes this worse is that many immigrants to the U.S. came from communities which no longer exist in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. After the Holocaust, there is no community from Rhodes. There is only a small remnant in certain cities like Salonika or Sofia or Bucharest. With the passing of the generation of immigrants who were raised in the old cities across Europe and

13

elsewhere, largely no one remains who know the authentic customs. I recall a community Seder on the Second Night of Passover at the old Sephardic Hebrew Center in Los Angeles, the former Rhodesli synagogue in Los Angeles, about 30 years ago where a racket was heard emanating from the kitchen. The women in the kitchen were debating whether in Rhodes the Jews ate green beans or not on Passover. 30 years ago, the women who had grown up on Rhodes could not remember this simple fact. Much more has been lost in the 30 years since, especially as there are few women, or men, who once lived in the Jewish community of Rhodes who are still alive. There are some heroes of diversity who have emerged in recent decades to counteract the trend of losing diversity of culture, language, and customs with the disappearance of many separate communities. Yale Strom, Dr. Jose Nessim, and Aron Hasson come to mind as three individuals who have devoted their lives to the preservation of Jewish diversity. Yale Strom grew up in San Diego of all places. From San Diego, he traveled first to New York where he studied both Yiddish in a serious manner at the YIVO Institute as well as gaining a specialization in the unique Klezmer music of the former Eastern European Jewish communities. From New York, he traveled with a camera through Europe capturing the remaining buildings, cemeteries, and streets which were once teeming with Jews. He has chronicled the re-emergence of some past communities in recent decades as Jews return to cities that had become bereft of Jews during the Holocaust period. Yale has sponsored efforts at reviving Yiddish and has sparked renewal of interest in the unique customs of communities. Through Yale’s efforts, some customs and traditions thought to be previously extinct have come back to life. It is virtually impossible to overestimate the impact that Dr. Joe Nessim has had on the revival of Sephardic Judaism. With his creation in the seventies of the international Sephardic Educational Center, he has personally purchased in the Old City of Jerusalem the buildings formerly associated before 1948 with the office of the Sephardic Chief Rabbi, the Rishon Lezion. He has opened up a center for Sephardic heritage and culture where Jewish youth and young adults come to Jerusalem from throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Tens of thousands of young and old have been exposed to the former vibrancy of Sephardic thought and ways, with the re-emergence of Sephardic tradition being front and center. Like Yale Strom, Dr. Nessim has done much to bring back the lively Jewish heritage of old.

For well over 2,000 years, Jews lived on the Island of Rhodes, a unique island community central to the Mediterranean shipping routes and the center of much of world and Jewish history. Then, in the summer of 1944, after the Germans had seized control of the island from the previous Italian regime, the Jewish community came to the end with the deportation of the community. As the Jews marched from the Juderia, the old ghetto, to the port, they left behind mostly empty buildings and Jewish institutions. A way of life seemed over. There were remnants of the Rhodesli community scattered around the globe, mostly consisting of Jews who had left the community before the War between 1910-1938, with relatively small communities in places like Seattle, Los Angeles, and South Africa. But there was little linking these communities into the larger, vibrant community of history. That was until the past couple of decades when a descendent of Rhodes who grew up in Los Angeles, Aron Hasson,

decided something needed to be done. He established the Rhodes Jewish Foundation and Museum. He traveled around the globe to record the oral history of those who survived the old community. He received books and artifacts families had saved from Rhodes. He gathered pictures which highlighted the community which once was Rhodes. The Museum he established in the remaining synagogue building on Rhodes now brings hundreds who descend from this community as well as thousands of other Jews and non-Jews to an appreciation of this unique community as they tour the Museum and old Jewish community. Aron Hasson has linked the descendents of Rhodes through a newsletter and a website. He has restored a Torah scroll from Rhodes from the time of Maimonides and written according to the traditions Maimonides outlined. He has discovered and is in the process of disseminating a Siddur (prayer book) from Rhodes discovered in the archives of Oxford University. One man has sparked the revival of a people. Aron Hasson is also a hero of Jewish diversity. There are other communities to restore and revive. There are many opportunities for Jews who descend from the many communities lost in the Holocaust in Europe to travel back to ancestral homelands and to work toward the restoration of the heritage of these communities. Jews from Northern Africa, from Middle East nations, and even from former communities in Central and Southern Africa can do the same. We are not traditionally just a community of “black hats.” We are a variety of communities who formerly wore turbans, a fez, and many other head coverings. We don’t just have Jewish music in one style, we have many forms of melodies. We have various arts and crafts. We had unique languages which can be brought back to life. The diversity of Judaism was always part of the beauty of Judaism. We have an opportunity to help restore this diversity. Through the efforts of our “diversity heroes” and our own personal efforts, we restore historic Judaism and establish a more vital Jewish community and people of Israel for the future. It is well worth the effort!

“As the soul fills the body, so G-d fills the world” (Talmud, Berachot 58)

O

n the eve of Rosh HaShanah, all things revert to their primordial state. The Inner Will ascends and is retracted into the divine essence; the worlds are in a state of sleep and are sustained only by the Outer Will. The service of man on Rosh HaShanah is to rebuild the divine attribute of sovereignty and reawaken the divine desire, “I shall reign,” with the sounding of the shofar The Kabbalistic Masters One night a year, the world succumbs to a cosmic slumber. On the functional level, the sleeper’s vital signs plod on: the sun still rises, winds blow, rains fall, seeds germinate, animals move about, humans think and feel. But the consciousness of creation is muted. For its soul of souls— the “inner will” of the divine desire for creation—has ascended, retreated to a place from where it views its body and life with a calculated detachment. Only the “outer will”—the most external element of the divine desire— remains to sustain the sleeping body of creation. And then, a piercing sound rises from the earth and reverberates through the heavens. A sound that wakens the sleeping universe, stirring its soul to resume its conscious, willful animation of its material shell. The cry of the shofar resounds. A profound yet utterly simple cry, a note free of the nuances of logical music. An utterly simple cry that rouses the soul of creation to a renewed commitment to the endeavor of life. Thus the Kabbalists describe the cosmic drama which repeats itself each year, as the world “falls asleep” on the eve of Rosh HaShanah and is “awakened” the following morning by the sound of the shofar. Indeed, it is told of certain great mystics that on the night and morning of Rosh HaShanah they would feel physically weak: so attuned were they to the diminution of divine involvement in the world during this time, that it affected their own souls’ investment in their bodies. What does it mean that the world is asleep? How does our sounding of the shofar restore the consciousness and vitality of creation? Why is G-d’s inner will withdrawn on Rosh HaShanah eve, and why does His outer will remain behind? What, indeed, is the difference between “inner will” and “outer will”? To answer these questions, we must first examine the function and the dynamics of “will” in our own lives.

17

Sep. 11- Sep. 25 ,2009

Layers of Will Will is the soul of deed. Ultimately, no act is ever performed that is not driven by the engine of volition. But will is a multi-layered thing. There is the outermost layer of will that directly drives our actions. There is a deeper will that underlies this external will, which, in turn, contains yet a deeper will, which is itself an outgrowth of yet a deeper will, and so on. Thus, the relationship between will and deed is not static, but subject to changes and fluctuations. At times, the innermost level of will suffuses our actions, enlivening them with the desire and satisfaction that motivate them. Other times, our deeds may be lifeless and lethargic, sustained only by the most superficial aspect of our will. To illustrate, let us take the example of a person who owns and operates a business. Our businessman does many things in the course of the day—waking at an early hour, commuting to his office, answering the telephone, meeting with potential clients, and so on. On the most basic level, these deeds are driven by the will to do them: he wants to get out of bed, he wants to start the car, he wants to pick up the receiver—if he didn’t want to do these things, he wouldn’t do them. But why does he want to do these things? Because of an underlying will that his business should survive and prosper. But why does he want his business to survive and prosper? Because it brings him income and prestige—if this were not the case, he would have no desire for a business. Delving deeper, the desire for money and status stems from deeper wants—the desire for food, shelter and acceptance by his fellows—which, in turn, are outgrowths of the desire, intrinsic to every creature, to continue to exist. This does not mean that every time our businessman picks up the telephone he does so because he senses that his very existence depends on it. Indeed, he need not even be convinced that the act will yield a profit, or even that it is crucial to the functioning of his business. Ultimately, however, his every action is the end-result of this "chain" of wills, each of which is caused by its predecessor. So the act of lifting that telephone receiver “contains” the entire sequence of wills that drive it, including its deepest cause of causes. This “inner will” is the soul of his action, suffusing it with a life and vitality that reflect how deeply its origins lie in his innermost self. This is why there is a quality to the way that the owner of a business picks up the phone that shows a desire and commitment deeper than that of

Defining Sovereignty

the most devoted employee. Assessment There are times, however, when the soul of a deed ascends a notch, to view its body and life with a calculated detachment. There are times when a person reassesses what he does. Is the business indeed turning a profit? Is it meeting my needs? Is this what I want to do with my life? His actual involvement with the business continues as before. He continues to get out of bed in the morning, continues to drive to the office, continues to answer the telephone. He continues to “want” to do these things on the most external level of will. But the deeper elements of his will are no longer in it. The business can be said to be “asleep,” animated only by the most external layer of its soul. Then something happens to rekindle our businessman’s desire. Perhaps he sees a lucrative figure on the year’s balance sheet or a most promising projection for the future. Or a certain deal materializes that embodies everything he loves about his business, everything about it that reaffirms his self-vision and furthers his goals. His deeds, dry and mechanical in his contemplative interim, are reinfused with life and vitality. The business wakens from its slumber. To Will a World Once a year, the universe enters into a state of suspended animation. G-d reconsiders His creation. Is it turning a profit? Is it realizing My goals? Do I still desire to invest Myself in the role of “Creator”? The sun still rises, winds blow, rains fall, seeds germinate. G-d’s desire for a world continues to sustain and drive the universe. But G-d’s desire for a world is but the most external layer of the universe’s soul. Why does G-d desire a world? There is a deeper motive beneath this membrane of will, and yet a deeper motive beneath it, and so on. The Kabbalistic writings abound with various divine motives for the creation of the universe: the desire to express His infinite potential; the desire that He be known by His creations; the desire to bestow goodness; and others. Each of these “motives” relates to another layer of the divine will, describing the soul of the universe as manifested on another level of reality. At the heart of it all lies the very essence of the divine will to create: G-d created a world because He wanted to be king.

18

Sep. 11- Sep. 25 ,2009

G-d is all-capable and all-powerful. So it would seem a relatively simple matter for Him to make himself king: all He has to do is create a world, populate it with creatures, and rule over them. But this alone would not make Him a king, at least not in the ultimate sense of the word. A shepherd who drives a herd of a million sheep is not a king. A tyrant who rules an empire of a billion terrified subjects is not a king. A benevolent patriarch who extends his authority over dozens of his descendants is not a king. A teacher with a thousand devoted disciples is not a king. All these have one thing in common: their subjects are compelled to submit to them. They may be compelled by their reliance on the shepherd’s devotion to their needs, by their ruler’s power over them, by their filial bond to their father or by their appreciation of their master’s wisdom—the bottom line is that they are compelled. And true sovereignty cannot be compelled. A true sovereign is one whose subjects freely choose to submit to him. Not because they need him, not because they fear his power, not because they love him, not even because they appreciate his greatness, but because they choose him as their king. So to become king of the universe, G-d created man— a creature endowed with free choice. He created a being that is both the furthest from Him and the closest to Him of all His creation: furthest from Him in that man is a free and independent being—free even to rebel against his maker; closest to Him in that man is a free and independent being—as only He is free and independent. In the words of the first man, Adam, “First and last, You created me.” G-d created man, “dust from the earth,” the last and lowliest of His creations, and “blew into his nostrils a breath of life” that is the very “image of G-d.” There are many aspects to our relationship with G-d. We relate to G-d as our shepherd, expressing our gratitude for His providence over and sustenance of our lives. We fear and revere Him, ever mindful of His majesty and power. We love Him with the boundless love of a child, recognizing our intrinsic bond with our Father in Heaven. We gain a student’s unique appreciation of his master by studying His wisdom, implicit in His creation and revealed to us in His Torah. Each of these relationships realizes another aspect or “layer” in the divine motive for creation, intensifying and enlivening G-d’s involvement with His world. But once a year, “all things revert to their primordial state” as G-d reevaluates the very core of His desire for a world,

the underlying “why” of His involvement with us as shepherd, ruler, father and teacher. Once a year, G-d asks Himself: Why create a world? The First Coronation The timing of this cosmic audit is not arbitrary: Rosh HaShanah is the day on which G-d’s sovereignty of the world was first realized. Rosh HaShanah is the sixth day of creation, the day on which man was created. G-d had already created the heavens and the earth, the animals and the angels; He already presided over a world that submitted to His rule, over creatures who feared Him and loved Him and appreciated His wisdom. But the world was still in a state of suspended animation: its soul of souls had yet to be evoked. Then G-d created man, the only one of His creations with the freedom to choose or reject his maker. Moments later, G-d was king. “When Adam stood up on his feet,” the Zohar tells us, “he saw that all creatures feared him and followed him as servants do their master. He then said to them: ‘You and I both, come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before G-d our maker.’” When the first man chose G-d as his king, the primordial purpose in creation came to fruition, infusing G-d’s work with life and vitality. Every year, “all things revert to their primordial state” as G-d again relates to His creation as He did prior to Adam’s crowning Him king. On Rosh HaShanah eve, the divine “inner will” for creation is retracted and the world is plunged into a state of “sleep.” Then, a piercing sound rises from the earth and reverberates through the heavens. The cry of the shofar resounds: an utterly simple cry, reflecting not the fear of the subject, not the love of the child or the sophistication of the student’s understanding, but the simple trumpet blast of a people’s coronation of their king. A cry that reflects the simplicity of choice—true choice, choice that is free of all external motives and influences. A cry that rouses the soul of creation to a renewed commitment to and involvement in the endeavor of life. Adapted from the teachings of the Rebbe by Yanki Tauber Courtesy of MeaningfulLife.com

The Master Key

O

ne year, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov said to Rabbi Ze'ev Kitzes, one of his senior disciples: "You will blow the shofar for us this Rosh Hashanah. I want you to study all the kavanot (kabbalistic meditations) that pertain to the shofar, so that you should meditate upon them when you do the blowing." Rabbi Ze'ev applied himself to the task with joy and trepidation: joy over the great privilege that had been accorded him and trepidation over the immensity of the responsibility. He studied the Kabbalistic writings that discuss the multifaceted significance of the shofar and what its sounds achieve on the various levels of reality and in the various chambers of the soul. He also prepared a sheet of paper on which he noted the main points of each kavanah, so that he could refer to them when he blew the shofar.

At the conclusion of the day's prayers, the Baal Shem Tov made his way to the corner where Rabbi Ze'ev sat sobbing under his tallit. "Gut Yom Tov, Reb Ze'ev!" he called, "That was a most extraordinary shofar-blowing we heard today!" "In the king's palace," said the Baal Shem Tovl, "there are many gates and doors, leading to many halls and chambers. The palace-keepers have great rings holding many keys, each of which opens a different door. But there is one key that fits all the locks, a master key that opens all the doors. "The kavanot are keys, each unlocking another door in our souls, each accessing another chamber in the supernal worlds. But there is one key that unlocks all doors, that opens up for us the innermost chambers of the divine palace. That master key is a broken heart." •

Rabbi Ze'ev reached into his pocket and his heart froze: the paper had disappeared! He distinctly remembered placing it there that morning, but now it was gone. Furiously, he searched his memory for what he had learned, but his distress over the lost notes seemed to have incapacitated his brain: his mind was a total blank. Tears of frustration filled his eyes. He had disappointed

his master, who had entrusted him with this most sacred task. Now he must blow the shofar like a simple horn, without any kavanot. With a despairing heart, Rabbi Ze'ev blew the litany of sounds required by law and, avoiding his master's eye, resumed his place.

"But Rebbe ... I ..."

Finally, the great moment arrived. It was the morning of Rosh Hashanah, and Rabbi Ze'ev stood on the reading platform in the center of the Baal Shem Tov's synagogue amidst the Torah scrolls, surrounded by a sea of tallit-draped bodies. At his table in the southeast corner of the room stood his master, the Baal Shem Tov, his face aflame. An awed silence filled the room in anticipation of the climax of the day -- the piercing blasts and sobs of the shofar.

hildren play a major role in this week's double portion. In Nitzavim, Moshe tells the nation, "You are standing today, all of you, before Hashem." He enumerates the different categories of people, from elders to water-carriers, and he makes sure to include everyone, even the small children (cf. Deuteronomy 28:9-10). In Vayeilech as well, the Torah is cognizant of the youth. Moshe commands that every seven years "the men, the women, and the small children, and your stranger who is in your cities shall gather in Jerusalem to hear the king read the Book of Devorim" (ibid 31:12). Commentaries expound that the aforementioned children are those who are too young to understand. But Moshe also talks about youngsters who have a basic grasp as well: "And their children … they shall hear and they shall learn to fear Hashem, your G-d, all the days that you live on the land to which you are crossing the Jordan, to possess it." The Ohr HaChaim explains that this verse refers not to toddlers, but rather to children who are old enough to learn the fear of Hashem. What troubles me is the end of the posuk, " they shall learn to fear Hashem, your G-d, all the days that you live on the land to which you are crossing the Jordan, to possess it."

Shouldn't the Torah say "all the days that they live on the land to which they are crossing the Jordan"? After all, we are teaching them, not the adults! Why does the Torah tell us to teach the children, for all the days that their parents live on the land to which you are crossing the Jordan, to possess it? Lieutenant Meyer Birnbaum was one of the only Orthodox US army officers commissioned during World War II. Last year, he spoke at our yeshiva, and though I was enraptured by the harrowing tales of his war-time activities, one small incident that occurred to him as a young boy growing up in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn during the Depression did not escape me. In those days, few young men attended yeshiva or were committed to vigorous Torah observance. Meyer went to public school as well, but his parents wanted to raise him as an observant Jew. His friends would often make fun of his yarmulka, and few attended his bar-mitzvah. But that did not deter him. In fact, from the time he was old enough his mother would make sure that he attended the mincha service. Imagine the sight. A young boy coming to pray together

with a group of elderly men who were hanging on to their tradition while their inheritors looked for newfound freedoms outside the decaying walls of the synagogue. Even the men who came to pray were only there to say kaddish for a dearly departed. So when young Meyer entered the portals of the shul for the very first time their eyes widened in amazement. Their shock turned to pity as they assumed the young boy came to shul for the same reason that most of them came, and for the very reason that they prayed their children would one day come the sole purpose of saying kaddish. The moment came when the kaddish yossum, the mourner's kaddish, was to be recited, and the congregation began in a cacophonous unison the hallowed words, "Yisgadal V'Yiskadash." Meyer just stared up into space, waiting to answer the first responsive Amen. He was startled by the jab in the ribs by a crooked finger, which left his searing side and began pointing to the correct place in the prayer book. "Nu!" shouted the man, "They are saying kaddish!” "I know that they are saying kaddish!" answered Meyer. "So, what are you waiting for? Say along!"

heading. But he had no time to think when another old man looked his way, motioning for him to join the mourners in the kaddish recitation! "But I don't have to say kaddish!" answered Meyer tearfully, "my parents are alive!" "Your parents are alive?" asked the old-timer incredulously. "Yes, thank G-d, they are both alive! Why do you think that they are dead and that I should say kaddish?" They gathered around him as the final Amen was said and explained their actions. "We could not imagine someone your age coming to shul for any other reason!" The Torah tells us that children must be trained and taught not for post-parental existence, but rather it tells the parents "all the days that you live on the land to which you are crossing the Jordan." You must teach them to practice while you can enjoy the nachas as well! Torah is a living entity, not only to pass from dying embers to rekindle new flames, but rather to pass a vibrant torch with leaping flames onto the youth whose boundless energy will inspire new generations, when even you live on the land that Hashem has given you! •

“I call this day upon heaven and earth as witnesses. I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. And you shall choose life, so that you and your children may live.”(Deuteronomy 30:19)

Do we really need the Torah to tell us to choose life? Which person of sound mind would choose death? One possible answer is that one must make a conscious decision to live and not just vegetate. And I don't mean to live it up by living life in the fast lane. To choose life means to choose to live a meaningful life, a life committed to values and a higher purpose. Did it make any difference at all in that I inhabited Planet Earth for so many years? Will anyone really know the difference if I'm gone? Is my life productive, worthwhile? It is told that when the fist Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, wanted to bless Reb Yekutiel Liepler with wealth, he declined the offer, saying that he was afraid it would distract him from more spiritual pursuits. When the Rebbe then offered to bless him with longevity, Reb Yekutiel stipulated that it should not be "peasant's years, with eyes that do not see, and ears that do not hear, where one neither sees nor senses G-dliness." Reb Yekutiel was rather fussy, it seems. The holy rebbe is offering him an amazing blessing and he is making conditions! Yes, he chose life and he chose to live a life that would be purposeful, productive and really would make a tangible difference. He wasn't interested in a long life if, essentially, it would amount to an empty life. As we stand just before Rosh Hashanah, let us resolve to choose life. Let us live lives of Torah values and noble deeds. And may we be blessed with a good and sweet new year. •

e find that when the Torah speaks of Rosh HaShana, it tells us "Yom Teru'ah yih'yeh lachem", "a day of teru'ah (sounding the horn) should be to you". Although the verses do not elaborate on what type of horn or instrument is being sounded, our sages have taught us that it refers to the Shofar, which is usually a ram's horn. Why do we sound the Shofar? What is it supposed to accomplish? The Sefer HaChinuch tells us that we must understand the nature of "man", human beings. As 'man' is a creature from the physical realm, he is only aroused and inspired to action by something stirring, something that will cause him to snap out of the ordinary routine. We see this concept in practice at a time of war: In order to stir up the troops, trumpets are sounded, in hope that this arouses and motivates the soldiers to action. On Rosh HaShana, we do the same. We "awaken", by means of the Shofar, all who are to be judged on this day. We try to incite all who have sinned to plead with Hashem and request

mercy from Him when judging. Hashem is receptive, as he is gracious, compassionate and forgiving, of those who return to Him with a complete heart. If the sounding of the Shofar has its intended effect, Hashem will graciously accept the repentance of all on Rosh HaShana. The sound that eminates from and the shape of the Shofar are meant to inspire us as well. The Sefer HaChinuch writes that the Shofar is a reminder that man should strive to break the impulses of his heart which are evil with the sinful cravings of the world. How does the sound of the Shofar accomplsih this? The actual sound emitted from the Shofar is broken; it is not one straight note, but a series of staccato blasts. The broken sound reminds us that we have a job of "breaking" to do as well - the breaking of our evil inclination. The shape of the Shofar is not straight like a trumpet. Rather, the end of the Shofar is curved and bent. This bent shape is to remind us that we should bend our hearts in subservience to Hashem. •

What is Livescan Fingerprinting? Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ) has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment. Livescan technology replaces the ink process of recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also forward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan? Livescan may be required as a condition of employment for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards, Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees, Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone applying for a professional licensing, certification, or permit. Persons applying for foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances may also need Livescan processing.

ith the approach of Rosh Hashanah as we close the past year and welcome the new, what better time for auditing our experiences in the past year so that we can better them in the year to come. Each one of us does so in our own personal way. Yet, there is something we can all learn from Moshe the innkeeper who employed a unique method of accounting. The Baal Shem Tov's students once asked how to prepare for the High Holidays. He sent them to observe the simple innkeeper, Moshe. The students took a room in his inn, and waited to discover the answer to their question. At midnight before Rosh Hashanah they heard Moshe rustling about in the front room. They peeked out and saw Moshe taking down two large notebooks from the shelf. He sat down on a small stool, lit a candle, and began reading from one notebook. The notebook was a diary of all the misdeeds and transgressions the innkeeper had committed in the course of the year-the date, time and circumstance of each scrupulously noted. His "sins" were quite benign -- a word of gossip one day, oversleeping the time for prayer on another, neglecting to give his daily coin to charity on a third -- but by the time Moshe had read through the first few pages, his face was bathed in tears. For more than an hour Moshe read and wept, until the last page had been turned.

A Novel Audit He then opened up the second notebook. This, too, was a diary -- of all the troubles and misfortunes that had befallen him in the course of the year. On this day Moshe was beaten by a gang of peasants, on that day his child fell ill; once, in the dead of winter, the family had frozen for several nights for lack of firewood; another time their cow had died, and there was no milk until enough pennies had been saved to buy another. When he had finished reading the second notebook, the tavernkeeper lifted his eyes heavenward and said: "So you see, dear Father in Heaven, I have sinned against You. Last year I repented and promised to fulfill Your commandments, but I repeatedly succumbed to my evil inclination. But last year I also prayed and begged You for a year of health and prosperity, and I trusted in You that it would indeed be this way. "Dear Father, today is the eve of Rosh Hashanah, when everyone forgives and is forgiven. Let us put the past behind us. I didn't always do what was asked of me and You didn't always do what was asked of You. I forgive you and you forgive me, and we'll call it even."
