his is the time that we receive in the mail the beautifully calligraphied beige envelopes with two return addresses on the back. Inside the envelopes are wedding announcements, often with both Hebrew and English texts, both in fancy scripts. The invitations are especially exciting when you remember back to the day of birth of either the bride or groom. (They grow up so fast.) So far, this summer, my own house has been privileged to receive four such invitations to weddings. We also have received e-vites, special electronic notices sent by email, informing us of L’Chaim’s, engagement parties to introduce the newly engaged couples. Weddings. Engagements. Mazel Tov! In a time when people seem pessimistic about the economy and the future, riots throughout the world seem to be destroying entire countries, we see young couples getting married. These couples are proclaiming their optimism and hope for the future. When people generally seem to feel isolated and all on their own, these young couples are making a commitment to each other. They are embarking on a partnership. They • 323-965-1544 •
are taking a stand. They are standing for something. They are accepting tradition. When others are rejecting the values of their parents and grandparents, these young couples will be married in the same ceremony that united their parents and their parents before that. The world around seems crazy. The “old ways” often just don’t seem to matter. Moms do not need dads to raise children. Dads don’t need moms. People don’t even talk to one another. Next door neighbors often remain strangers to one another, even after living for years right next door. People are making cutbacks in their lives, eliminating activities and expenses to cutback with the diminishing economy. People don’t want to take chances. Polls indicate that most Americans see their lives getting worse. Yet, against this backdrop, couples are standing up and proclaiming to the world their love for each other, their hope for their future, and their willingness to make a commitment. They are committing to one another. They are committing to life, to positivity, to hope. info@communitylinks.info

They are accepting the future even in the face of uncertainties of the world about. This commitment seems all the more important against the backdrop of the current state of our society. I enjoy talking to the parents of the bride or groom. There is great happiness. The wedding seems an affirmation of all they worked for. Years of tuition payments. Orthodontic appointments. Little League baseball on Sundays. Car pools. Bar Mitzvah lessons. A year in Yeshiva in Israel. Three additional years of college. All the investments of time, effort, and money have paid off. The show of love over the past 22 years was all worth it. Your son (or daughter) is now sharing his love, the love that he learned from you and his family, with his new partner. There are some interesting trends that I have seen among couples getting married. They want to do it right. There is a whole slew of artists who have created dozens of beautiful forms for Ketubot. The couples want to grace their new homes with the traditional text of the wedding contract beautifully and artistically painted and filled out. One bride-to-be whose ancestors come from the Island of Rhodes, just like mine, asked me how she might get an artist to replicate an ancient Ketuba from the Jewish Museum in Rhodes. It was not enough just to get a beautiful Ketuba, she wanted to have a Ketuba that her great-grandparents might have had. Other couples spend extra time to choose the exact right Hebrew melodies for the ceremony. It is not enough just to have the traditional verses read, couples want memorable melodies sung by memorable voices. There is a principle in Judaism of Hidur Mitzvot, not just celebrating the traditions, but observing the traditions in the most beautiful way. Hidur Mitzvot describes how many of these young couples are approaching their weddings. Tradition is alive. The receipt of invitations tells me that there is indeed hope. The actions of these young couples inspire the rest of us. It is not a time to give up. It is a time to make commitments. It is a time for optimism. It is a time for hope. It is a time to think about and plan for the future.

In one of the most difficult episodes in the Torah, this week we read how Moshe loses his entitlement to enter the Land he so desired to inherit. What happened is as follows: during the desert journey, a miraculous well traveled with the Jews. This well existed in the merit of Miriam. When she died, it ceased to flow. The Jews complained bitterly that they were thirsty. Hashem commanded Moshe to "take his staff and speak to the rock," thereupon the rock would disgorge water to nourish a parched people. Moshe did not end up speaking to the rock. The nation was upset and impatient. When Moshe chose the wrong rock they chided him. "He in turn turned to them and said, "Listen you rebellious folk. Do you expect me to draw water from this rock?" (Numbers 20:10) Immediately Moshe hit the rock instead of speaking to it and water flowed from it. Hashem is angered by Moshe's actions. "Because you have not sanctified me in the eyes of the nation, you will not enter the the land of Israel”. (Numbers 20:12) Rashi, the classic medieval commentator, departs from his standard text-based explanation and bases his explanation of this verse upon the Midrash. "Imagine," said Hashem, "if the Jewish nation would have seen that scenario. A rock, that does not talk nor hear and does not need sustenance, produces water by the request of the Almighty. Surely, they would have taken heart when Hashem speaks to them! The impact would have been far more reaching!
Surely, the rock-water connection cannot be taken at face value. All who have merely dappled in the writing of our sages are familiar with the water as Torah and the rock dry and parched. Obviously, Hashem meant to send a message that even the driest stone can produce water. Why then did Moshe not play on that lesson to the rebellious folk and tell them that even the driest amongst them could become a wellspring of Torah? Reb Shraga Faivel Mendelovitz was the founder of Yeshiva Torah Voda'ath. Once he stayed in Miami for Shabbos at the home of a former student. The man escorted the Rebbe home from synagogue, but when he opened the door the young man was shocked and embarrassed. His wife, exhausted from a week's worth of child rearing, and the responsibility of keeping a home was sprawled on the couch. The Shabbos table was half-set, the dishes placed in a pile next to the kiddush cup and wine. In front of the head seat were two large challos sitting uncovered. The custom is to cover the challos when making kiddush. As the blessing over bread normally precedes that of wine it is a somewhat an metaphorical embarrassment to the bread thus it is covered during the kiddush.

It was Hashem who told Moshe to approach the rock. Moshe knew that the water would come. Then why was his admonition given in the inquisitive mode, rather it should have been decreed in the declarative mode! Listen you rebellious folk! I am going to extract water from a rock? It seems that Moshe, himself, (Heaven-forbid) doubted his own authority. (Though many commentaries explain the question as rhetorical.)

The student, who was embarrassed at the state of affairs, called out to his wife in a somewhat demeaning manner. "Please let us prepare the table in its entirety." Turning to his mentor, he exclaimed, "I'm sure that leaving the bread uncovered was an oversight! Everyone knows," he exclaimed shifting his self-inflicted embarrassment upon his wife, "that we must cover the challah before the kiddush. Reb Mendelovitz was annoyed at the man's self-righteous behavior and turned to him. "Over the years, I have heard many problems that people faced. Students, couples, and adults from all walks of life have entered my office to discuss their personal situations with me. Not once did a challah ever enter my office, suffering an inferiority complex because it was left uncovered during kiddush! Do you know why? Because we are not concerned with the challah! We are concerned with making ourselves cognizant of feelings. We worry about challahs because the goal is to worry about peo-

ple. How than can you embarrass your wife over not covering the challah when the act of covering is supposed to train you in sensitivity?" Moshe understood the valuable lesson that Hashem wanted to teach His nation. But if all that was on their minds was water to drink and not the great lessons for eternity, he questioned his mission. Listen you rebellious folk," he questioned. "Do you expect me to draw water from this rock?" Do you expect that the lessons of the great parable can be taught to those whose minds are only set on the parable itself ? Perhaps that is why Moshe cast the great lessons aside and hit the rock, thus disobeying Hashem's initial command. Perhaps he felt that a nation that focuses solely on the flow of drinking water couldn't understand the wellsprings of its spirituality. In the corporeal world that our sages call a "foyer to the World To Come," we must realize that everything is a preparation for eternity. You have to approach something from the right view. At least that's what Balak, the king of Moab, tried to convince his prime sorcerer who futilely tried to curse the Jewish nation. Though Bilaam had a notorious reputation, with for curses that never failed and the ability to cast spells upon whomever he desired, this time it didn't work. He tried, for a large fee, to curse the Jewish nation, who were camped opposite of Moab; but each time he opened his mouth blessings and not curses were emitted. "How can I curse when G-d is not angry," he exclaimed (Numbers 23:8).

In fact all through the preliminary portion of the kangaroo court, the judge kept referring to the beloved teacher and cantor as a butcher, meat vendor or slaughterer. Finally, the young scholar asked permission to speak. "Your honor," he began, "before I begin my defense, I'd like to clarify one point. I serve in many capacities in this shtetl. The people at the synagogue know me as the cantor. The children at the school and all of their parents know me as the teacher. It is only the animals that know me as the butcher!"
Each time the mission failed, Balak flew into a rage. Bilaam attempted to subvert G-d's intentions and appease Him with sacrifices -- all to no avail.
The commentaries explain that Bilaam knew that the power of his curses would only take effect by finding a small breach in the beauty of Israel -- a breach that he could expand with the power of his evil eye. He looked at all of Israel and could not find any flaw to amplify and use as a curse.
Balak tried another strategy. "Come with me to a different place from there you will see them; however, you will see its edge and not all of it - and you will curse it for me from there" (Numbers 23:13). It didn't work either. I had a difficult time understanding the new strategy. What's the difference if Bilaam were to see all of Israel or he would stand in a place that only offers a partial view? Is the G-d of Israel not ever-present, protecting them in part as well as in whole? Why would a curse work when Bilaam only viewed Israel from a partial perspective? A pious and very talented Jewish scholar was placed on trial in a small Polish town outside of Lvov. The charges, brought by a local miscreant, were based on some trumped-up complaint. The young scholar was beloved to his townsfolk as he served in the capacity of the town's shochet (ritual slaughterer), chazzan (cantor), and cheder rebbe. Thus, many people in town were worried as he appeared before a notoriously anti-Semitic judge.

Balak advised him to use another ploy. He made a suggestion that would be followed for generations by all the detractors of Jews. "Only look at them," he said, "from a partial perspective. Go up to the edge of the mountain; you shall see their edge and not all of them -- and you will curse them for me from there" (Numbers 23:13). Balak told Bilaam to concentrate on some poor aspects of the people. It is always possible to find a few exceptions to a most ethical and moral nation. There are those who stand on the edge of the mountain and take a partial view. They talk about Jews who may be accused of crimes or improprieties. They dissect individuals and embellish what they perceive as character flaws or personal faults. They point to those flaws as if they represent the entire person, as others point to harmful Jews as if they were the entire nation. And then they shout their curses. But Bilaam could not find the breach that he was looking for. Because Israel as a nation, as well as each individual Jew, cannot be judged by anything less than a total picture - for we are all one. •

CheCk uP Time Many of us take the time each year to go for a physical examination. Blood tests, X-rays, being poked and prodded, having your heart listened to on and on. A major part of the process is when the Doctor asks you many questions. In some instances you maybe asked to delve deeper into the question then just your initial response. Each additional answer you give allows the doctor to evaluate if there is a true problem or directs him/her to find something you may not even be aware of as something amiss. There are many types of examinations. In Success and Life Coaching there are also examinations. We poke and prod into the many characteristics and pieces what makes you who you are. Your Circle of Life is reviewed and examined. In other words, how are you physically, financially, emotionally, spiritually etc… Again, much is revealed about you through deep sincere questioning and evaluation. I remember the first time I worked with my coach, lets just say I wasn't open to the idea. What could a coach tell me about me that I don't already know. But I decided to give it a shot and agreed to a session. Somewhere in the discussion something incredible occurred. Without realizing it there were tears running down my cheeks and before I knew what was happening I was in a full cry. You see the my coach hit upon some damaged spots that

were covered by time, living and I guess a pretty quiet yet substantial defense mechanism. It was then that I realized even I needed someone to turn to outside of myself to examine me. Baruch Hashem it has been journey that I am so grateful for which has not only touched so many features of my life but those around me as well. To this day I call my coach whenever I need an adjustment. My friends, life isn't easy. Everyday we are faced with so many obstacles and difficulties. We try to do the best we can but somewhere along the line we become damaged. Life then creates much scar tissue and we don't even recognize if there ever was a wound. It is one of the reasons we have so much difficulty moving forward in so many areas of our life. Maybe it is time for your examination. Think about it!!! Held in his Chabad House, the evening started with calls for "did you put on Tefillin yet?" and "Are you ready for the next Mincha?" as Rabbi Levitansky's children hurried to put Tefillin on all the men who had not yet done the Mitzva, and make enough Minyanim for all the boys to daven for the Amud. As people entered the Shul, they washed and sat down at the tables to enjoy a full dinner, and spend some time "Farbrenging" with their table mates, recounting their experiences with Rabbi Levitansky, or "Avremel" as he was fondly known. Rabbi Eli Moshe Levitansky, Director of Chabad on SMC campus, emceed the event which began with the E FRE ES AT M I T ES
Rabbi Yehoshua Binyomin Gordon, Shliach and Director of Chabad of the Valley, read a letter from the Rebbe, followed by some personal reflections. The Guest Speaker of the evening, Rabbi Shmuel Lew, Shliach of the Rebbe in London, England then addressed the theme of the evening, "The Rebbe's Mivtzoim to bring Moshiach." Learning lessons from the life of Rabbi Levitansky, who at the young age of 12 had already written to the Rebbe about his (what would later be called) Mivtzoim of inviting his friends to shake Lulav and eat in the Sukkah, and his dedication to being a Shliach and a Rav together, teaching the Halachos of Toras Emes with sensitivity and caring, he called upon everyone to take these lessons to heart, and add in observance of

practical Mitzvos, and to help others to do so as well. Dessert was then served, after which all eyes turned to the screens to watch a video of personal experiences and memories with Rabbi Levitansky, and many pictures of the Rabbi fulfilling his Shlichus with Ahavas Yisroel and Simcha. The official part of the evening ended with Benching and Maariv, after which the tables were rearranged to Farbrengen style, where the Farbrengen continued until the wee hours of the morning. A Teshura was distributed which included letters of the Rebbe and some of Rabbi Levitansky's stories. Participants were asked to donate to the Camp Fund, one of Rabbi Levitansky's favorite projects, to ensure that every Jewish child has a Torah true summer, as the Rebbe spoke about many times. •

400 aT los angeles Fundraiser This past Monday, the Los Angeles community gathered in support of Cheder Menachem Boys School, for an evening of entertainment and a chance to win great prizes at the Annual Auction fundraiser. This event brings together local businesses, corporations, volunteers and many private donors, who help raise the much- needed funds that keep the high standard at the Cheder. 400 people gathered in the lush gardens of the Gilmore Adobe, where they enjoyed a cappuccino bar and prize viewing, to the musical accompaniment of Rabbi Burston and 2nd grade student Yechezkel Pinson. The event opened with warm words of inspiration from Rabbi Kesselman about the Chayus that the Cheder instills in its Talmidim. The crowd was then delighted by the charming Cheder Boys Choir, led by the enthusiastic Leibl Cohen, Tzvika Ferszt and Mendel Schwartz, and musical accompaniment prepared by Benshimon. Mendy Pellin MC'd the evening with quick wit, and the audience walked away with exciting prizes such as: The Rebbe Dollar, a Hawaiian Getaway, a Lithograph of “Shacharis with the Rebbe” by EK Tifenbrun, electronics, and certificates to local eateries and stores.

SUMMER CHOICES S.U.V. -V- C.R.V. “Children without childhood are a dark and fearsome spectacle”. (Mendele Mokher Sefarim – Yiddish writer 1836-1917). This quote brings me to the following observation: School is out. Summer is approaching, vacations begin, and children are
a handful. The beach is free, parks, museums, amusement parks, and alternative entertainment choices are available but they all lack moral guidance and supervision. Our greatest assets are children and we need to make the right choices for them. Recent surveys report that child violence and delinquency has risen, family dynamics are stressful. It is being recommended that families spend more time together by taking vacations but, strangely enough, vacations may cause more harm than good. With that in mind, I remembered my childhood and studying the Declaration of Independence’s Statement of Basic Rights. In it we are given the message of pursing happiness by our

founding fathers, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” I find this to be wishful thinking. Remember, as Americans
we are only guaranteed the pursuit of happiness but not the attainment. So I looked at the vacation industry for examples. I found an answer to happiness as portrayed by the auto industry advertisements. The theme usually portrays a family, or couple, in need of a vacation, hopping into a S.U.V. - sports utility vehicle and driving off to the sun and yonder. For some reason we are made to believe that bliss is to follow, that when the family comes home they will rested, rejuvenated, and full of harmony. But that may not be true at all. Many of us know a trip in a S.U.V. can be quite harrowing. When leaving on vacation everything is taken into the S.U.V.. Televisions, computers, and Ipods are taken to make the trip comfortable. away from your home environment you take the home with you. I have been thinking about an alternative. This summer I suggest instead of escaping in your S.U.V. try a C.R.V., meaning a Camp Retreat and Vacation. Let me state my case. We are all in agreement that children need stimulation in a safe and healthy environment. We need a place where children can feel free to run about, learn how to interact between friends and peers. Where can that be? What common denominator can bring children of all walks of life, wealthy or poor, strong or weak, educated and non-educated, observant and non-observant together? The answer is a religious summer camp. There the golden rule, love thy neighbor as yourself, is practiced by staff and supervisors. Together children learn to shed their inhibitions and share their feelings. Sports are taught and their little minds are stimulated as muscles are flexed. Children learn that competition is not a scary thing and challenges bring out the best. Sameness is stressed and divisiveness is frowned upon. Joy and camaraderie is the true ingredient for a wholesome child and we find it in camp. Songs are taught, values are met, and character traits are built. Imagine having a laboratory for goodness 24/7. What more can a parent ask for?
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, stated many times in his public talks that what children learn in camps, when supervised by G-d fearing and fun-loving staff, are lessons for life that cannot be replicated. Even when sports are played under proper supervision it is a mitzvah; as a strong healthy body is the way of Hashem. What needed to be taught at the home is now transferred to the summer vacation camps. A Torah true camp enhances children’s self esteem, guarantees spiritual and physical growth in a most positive and inspirational fashion. As parents we are given the opportunity to offer our prized assets a good start in life. A vacation doesn’t have to be an ordeal, stuffed into a S.U.V., and traveling from place to place. A vacation should be in a place of fun playing and learning. And a camp experience is the place. According to Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), Italian educator, philosopher, and founder of the Montessori program, “Play is child’s work” meaning that when children play, they learn values in a constructive fashion. Nothing can be better than playing baseball, volleyball or arts and crafts with a Jewish spirit of song and togetherness So this summer instead of jumping into your S.U.V. adopt a C.R.V. program. You will be glad you did.

or many years, my weekly date with my husband has followed an exact formula. Once a month we go to a restaurant, and the other three weeks of the month we go for pizza. The babysitter always arrives on time, and we always end up leaving fifteen minutes late. When we're a block from our home, we always discover that we've forgotten something (usually a jacket or an umbrella), and my husband always has to jog back home to get it. For our pizza dates, we always walk on the left side of the street until we reach Malchei Yisrael Street. Once there, we always buy two almond and date milkshakes, followed by two pieces of pizza topped with tomato and onion. Then we walk a few more blocks and eat the pizza on the same bench in the same beautiful park underneath the same tree that we always do. Then we walk home, the exact same way we came. Recently though, we had a surprise. For the first time in many years, we went on a date that was completely different. The evening started off as usual. The babysitter arrived at 7:30, and we were out of the door at 7:45. A block from our home, my husband realized that it was bit chilly, and he jogged back home to get a jacket. Then we walked down the hill to Malchei Yisrael Street, on 30 J u l y 1 , 2 0 1 1
the left side of the street as always.

But when we went to the ATM, it turned out that our account was totally empty. I hadn't eaten in hours. And there we were, penniless. My husband and I just stood there staring at the flashing screen of the ATM and feeling miserable.

Then my husband said, "Wait a minute…" and he plunged his hand deep into his pocket and brought up seven little silver shekels. Just under two dollars. That made me feel a little better. A very little bit. We walked to the milkshake store, and my husband put five of his seven shekels on the counter. He then ordered the smallest possible size of almond and date milkshake and asked the man behind the counter for an extra cup. Then my husband handed me half a milkshake, barely two inches high. I drank in silence, disappointed We walked a little further down the street, and when I smelled freshly baked dough and melted cheese, my stomach started begging loudly for food. I felt around in my purse for something to eat, and found only a few cracker crumbs. This was going to be the longest date ever. Then suddenly, my husband stopped in his tracks and said, "Wait a minute…" He took out his wallet, and pulled out a forgotten card

with 10 little punch holes over 10 little pizzas, with the word "FREE" written over the 11th pizza. At the pizza store, the young man behind the counter looked down at the card and then looked at us in disbelief. "We haven't used these punch cards for almost a year! How do you still have one?" Within a few minutes though, we were on the way to our favorite park carrying our single piece of pizza topped with tomatoes and onion. Before long, my husband and I were sitting on our favorite park bench, sharing our single piece of pizza. We sat there for a whole hour, laughing about our two-year-old's newest antics, and discussing an article my husband had just read, and debating whether we should finally buy a new set of chairs. I was still pretty hungry, but I realized that I no longer minded. The sky was star-filled and clear, the night chilly but gorgeous. The only thing that really mattered to me, I realized, was that my husband was at my side. Over the years, I have heard as many excuses for not going on a weekly date as there are couples. "My husband's too busy," "We don't know any babysitters," "Look, we just can't afford it at the moment." There are so many excuses why we cannot possibly find time
to spend with our husbands, but even more reasons why we must. Time set aside during the week to communicate with our spouses is the most important investment we can make in our marriages and families. It is a necessary prerequisite for a thriving marriage and children who will grow up feeling loved, stable, and protected. Two hours a week with our husbands to walk and laugh and share. Two hours with our husbands uninterrupted by a ringing phone or a crying child or a neighbor knocking on the door. It doesn't matter one bit, the truth is, if the only thing you can afford to do is share a single piece of pizza on a park bench on a starry night. All that matters is that for two whole hours, it's just the two of you. Alone. Together. That night, when we were right around the corner from our home, my husband said, "Wait a minute..." He ran down the street and disappeared into a store, and then ran back and presented me with a single red rose. In the past, on birthdays and anniversaries and holidays, my husband has certainly presented me with nicer presents. But that flower, on that special night, meant more to me than any of those gifts combined. In fact, I am sure that two-shekel rose is a gift I will treasure forever. •

Touro graduaTion Touro College Los Angeles (TCLA) proudly celebrated its fifth annual commencement exercises on Monday evening of June 13, 2011. With over 150 attendees, TCLA acknowledged the accomplishments of their graduates as well as the recent academic additions to the school. Specifically, four students were recognized for exceptional accomplishments. Ariella Silverman was presented as valedictorian, Menachem Stulberger with the Spirit of Touro Award, Yisroel Munitz with the Business Award and Bracha Cohen with the Psychology Award. These students surpassed expectations and displayed a desire to achieve beyond their field of study, a quality TCLA seeks in their student body. The first speaker of the evening was Dr. Bernard Luskin, CEO- Provost of Touro University Word Wide. He welcomed the families, friends and Touro students and shared
some recent accomplishments of Touro College, such as the acquirement of the New York Medical College. The remaining speakers of the evening were unified in their message to the graduates; pursue opportunities to utilize their earned degree to make a difference in the world. Valedictorian, Ariella Silverman, addressed her fellow graduates with poise and eloquence, encouraging her fellow classmates to join her in doing something remarkable with their degrees. Keynote speaker, Dr. Lucien Chocron, Psy. D., Co-chair of the Psychology Department also offered praise and encouragement to the graduates instilling in them a desire to “do good” in the world, while Dean Esther Lowy addressed the current political affairs of the State of Israel and the importance of staying committed to a Jewish state. The evening concluded with the bestowing of the degrees. Touro College Los Angeles has come a long way since their first graduating class of four students in 2007. With twenty one graduates in the 2011 class, TCLA is seeing growth. TCLA is committed to serving the community by providing quality higher education while staying true to Jewish values and perspectives. TCLA is making strides in their mark on Jewish education in Los Angeles. Such recent accomplishments as the initiation of a crisis hotline in the Psychology department and the increase of science courses are some of the many ways in which TCLA is expanding. TCLA is focused on offering exemplary education. Touro College Los Angeles is now entering its seventh year of higher Jewish education. The only West coast, accredited orthodox College, Touro sets the standards high, expecting great things from their graduating classes. Already, TCLA’s graduates of 2011 plan on continuing their pursuit of higher education by attending graduate programs in such Universities as University Southern California, Towson University of Baltimore, California State University and Touro University Worldwide, among others. Other graduates have already secured full time positions in their field of study. TCLA’s graduates and alumni have always been a source of pride for the school and TCLA continues to stay committed to their alumni and the Jewish Community as a whole.
