I

n 1956, then Senator John F. Kennedy published a work that won him the Pulitzer Prize. His work, Profiles in Courage, detailed heroic actions by U.S. Senators throughout our American history where country was put ahead of self gain. Kennedy wrote of the great men who not only led the Senate to become the greatest deliberative body in the world, but who both created and saved our great republic. We have named schools in Los Angeles after these great Senators memorialized by Kennedy, including Daniel Webster and Henry Clay. Close to 200 years after these men walked the corridors of the Capitol, we honor their courage. These were truly great individuals. We recall the glory of their words and of their actions. “Profiles in courage” would not be an apt description for many in public life today. We see members of both sides of the isle in Congress who choose a timely holiday vacation to a long-term resolution of a chaotic, expiring tax situation. We see members of Congress making millions in the stock market based on information only available to them in their official roles. We see ethical charges in which accusations have been made of using one’s office to benefit a bank owned by a husband. We witness the head of the congressional committee overseeing taxation himself charged with not paying his own taxes. We see the chair of an oversight committee taking preferential treatment from a bank his committee oversaw for a low home mortgage rate unavailable to others. In today’s Washington, we see a lack of action to resolve the financial issues impacting our budget and our lives. We see a lack of response to a very real international crisis regarding Iran. Washington “leaders” seem incapable of acting with courage. Problems worsen when this is little or no response. I mentioned how some schools in Los Angeles have been named after the heroic and courageous Senators in Kennedy’s book. We have a different standard today for “naming rights” for our schools, parks, and other local sites. Drive down the freeways or streets of Los Angeles. New schools are not named after now deceased “greats” who changed our society for the good. We see parks, courthouses, and schools named after current politicians, currently serving in Congress, on the County Board of Supervisors, or on the City Council. It doesn’t matter what party a current “leader” is from. Democrats vote to name a courthouse after a Republican in the Republican’s district. Republicans vote to name a park after a Democrat in the Democrat’s district. It goes like this: “I will memorialize you if you memorialize me.” If you get elected to an office, you have the right apparently to have every new public project in your district named for you. When I went to school in New York for college and graduate 10 J a n u a r y 1 6 , 2 0 1 2

school after growing up in Los Angeles, I was amazed how public schools are often merely numbered rather than named. There is Public School 61 or P.S. 101. I used to question this policy. After all, when we name a school for a Senator who saved the Republic or a general who led us to victory, we bring historical figures to greater public awareness. We help to create through the naming of our institutions role models for our children to emulate. The other day I drove by a school named after a member of Congress who has been under charges for ethical scandals. I also drove by parkland in the Santa Monica Mountains named after a current member of the Board of Supervisors who has voted repeatedly for maintaining the status quo as a member of the Coliseum Commission, actions that helped rob the people of Los Angeles of millions of dollars of public benefit, maintaining a system of kickbacks and bribes. Maybe he was not aware of the harm he was doing to the people of Los Angeles. Maybe he can be forgiven for his oversights. However, have his actions in public office raised him to the level where he should be memorialized forever with thousands of acres of public open space named after him for all time to come? There are many dangers in naming our institutions after living politicians who still hold office. The book is not closed on their service. We often need historical perspective in which info@communitylinks.info

to view those worthy of naming rights. In the recent Los Angeles Times article about the corruption within the Coliseum Commission, there were at least three members of the allegedly corrupt Commission who have already had public institutions named after them. If they are charged with crimes in the future, do we remove their names from the dedication plaques of the schools or parks?

raphical books, especially for young children, on key Jews from history? As we teach our children (and ourselves) about these great leaders and role models, we inculcate the importance of the values they lived. As we provide life examples of how a great Jewish leader lived such as principle as avoiding Lashon HaRa, idle gossip, we bring alive the concept and model exemplary behavior for our next generation.

We need to review the standards by which we bestow honors on today’s famous. We need to reconsider what we demand of our leaders. We don’t seem to expect courage in our leaders any more. We don’t seem to expect from our leaders that they act boldly. We don’t see great debates. We hear countless speeches, but few memorable words.

I used to serve in the 1980’s and 90’s as the National Jewish Chaplain of the Boy Scouts of America. In developing educational materials to serve the Scouts and other Jewish youth programs, we sampled some educational chapters. In one of the chapters, there was a question for discussion: Think of two famous Jewish business leaders and how they have contributed to our people and country. I remember one of the Scouts responding to this question, “The two famous Jewish business leaders that I think of are both in jail!”

When students attend Jefferson High, they have a constant reminder of the great leadership of this author of the Declaration of Independence and the negotiator for the Louisiana Purchase. In the Jewish community, we see schools named after the “highest mbidder,” the biggest donor. I know how the system works. It takes money to purchase a campus site or build a school. Selling naming rights to the highest bidder has been a proven way to finance large school projects. But it was notable when a local day school was renamed after Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut who perished aboard the Columbia shuttle, rather than a donor. It is important that we have a yeshiva named after Maimonides or other schools named after even more recent Gedolei Yisrael, leading rabbis and leaders of our people. Have you seen the baseball-card-style cards of Rabbis, with pictures and the life stories of leading Rabbis on each card? Have you seen the many biog11 J a n u a r y 1 6 , 2 0 1 2

For both the sake of the Jewish community and for the sake of America, we need to restore virtuous principles and living as primary. We need to see ongoing “profiles in courage” as we look at our Jewish and secular leaders. We need to establish effective models for leadership for our children to follow. We need to reserve the naming of our institutions for only those who truly have given their lives for the values we cherish. When we honor the disgraced, we belittle the values which serve as the foundation for both Judaism and America. It is not too late. There are many opportunities for our leaders to show courage and values. And we should demand nothing less. •

"If nominated I shall not accept, if elected I shall not serve." The words of Civil War general George Tecumseh Sherman ring clear in American history as a tribute to a man's obstinate unwillingness to commit to further service to a shattered country. It seems that Moshe responds in almost the same manner, not to a nominating committee but to G-d Almighty. When Moshe is approached by Hashem to speak to Pharaoh, he defers. First he ponders, "Who am I to go to Pharaoh?" (Exodus 3:11) After Hashem exhorts him, Moshe tries a different tactic. "I am not a man of words… for I am a man heavy of mouth and speech." (Exodus 4:10) Again G-d refutes his extenuation and chides Moshe that, after all, "who makes a mouth for man if not the Almighty?" And once again He urges Moshe to go to Pharaoh, assuring him that "I will be with your mouth and teach you what to say." (Exodus 4:12)

guide him, His words that will be spoken and His spirit that will inspire him, Moshe still does not accept. He has one final seemingly lame pretext: "Send the one who You are accustomed to send." (Exodus 4:13) The scenario is almost incomprehensible. After every one of Moshe's protestations are well refuted by the Almighty, how did Moshe have the audacity to petition G-d to send someone else? My 2nd grade rebbe, Rabbi Chaim Follman, asked his Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, to officiate at the wedding of his daughter. Reb Yaakov checked his appointment calendar and shook his head slowly. "Unfortunately I have a prior commitment and can not fulfill your request." He wished Reb Chaim and his daughter a heartfelt mazel tov, showered them with blessings, and added that if his schedule would open he would gladly join them at the wedding.

On the day of the wedding, Rav Yaakov was informed that his original appointment was canceled. Immediately, he made plans to attend the wedding. Assuming he would come after the ceremony, he arrived at the hall long after the time that the invitation had announced that the ceremony would commence. Upon entering the wedding hall, Rav Yaakov realized that for one reason or another the chupah had not yet begun. Quickly, Rav Yaakov went downstairs and waited, almost in hiding, near the coat room for nearly 40 minutes until after the ceremony was completed. A few students who noticed the Rosh Yeshiva huddled in a corner reciting Tehillim could not imagine why he was not upstairs and participating in the chupah. They, however, did not approach him until after the ceremony.

MAKE YOUR MEAL A COMBO! ADD FRIES OR A SMALL SALAD AND A REGULAR FOUNTAIN DRINK TO ANY ITEM

Reb Yaakov explained his actions. "Surely Reb Chaim had made arrangements for a different m'sader kidushin. Had he known that I was in the wedding hall he would be in a terrible bind --after all, I was his first choice and I am much older than his second choice. Reb Chaim would be put in the terribly uncomfortable position of asking someone to defer his honor for me. Then Reb Chaim would have to placate that rabbi with a different honor, thus displacing someone else. I felt the best thing to do was stay in a corner until the entire ceremony had ended -- sparing everybody from the embarrassment of even the slightest demotion." Moshe's older brother Ahron had been the prophet of the Jewish nation, guiding them, encouraging them, and supporting them decades before Moshe was asked by Hashem to go to Pharaoh. When Moshe was finally convinced by the Almighty that he was worthy of the designated mission and that his speech impediment was not a inhibiting factor, there was one more issue that Moshe had to deal with. And that factor was not in Hashem's control. It was a very mortal factor -- his brother Ahron's feelings. Under no circumstance, even if every other qualification were met, would Moshe accept a position that might, in some way, slight his brother Ahron Only after Moshe was assured of Ahron's overwhelming moral support and willingness to forego his commission did Moshe accept the great task. Sanctity of mission and divinity of assignment end somewhere very sacred: at the tip of someone else's heart. •

Most children are excited about school. But for my eight-year-old daughter, school presents serious challenges. The odds are heavily stacked against her. I can see and feel her apprehension as she checks her supplies one last time. She climbs onto my lap in need of extra reassurance. As she presses herself against me, I stroke her freshly washed hair, and softly tell her over and over again how much I love her. That she will do it. That she will succeed. In her own unique way.

have won the Guinness world record for “mother that sits most in the park”! I sat there for practically seven years! It was either playgroup/school, or park. Rain or shine, there we were. In the winter, I would bundle us both up with layers of clothes. In the rain, we wore rubber boots and plastic raincoats. In the summer, we wore sunscreen! I was equipped. I would wrap up supper for two and bring it to the park. The park table didn’t have a tablecloth she could pull off! The

call from her school informing me that a meeting had been scheduled and I was expected to be there. In the back of my mind, I knew that the time to face the obstacles had come. So there I sat on a metal folding chair (my husband was unable to take off from work to attend), looking across a scratched metal desk, at the school principal and the assistant principal and her teachers! Although they were very polite and genuinely concerned for my daughter’s wellbeing, I felt like a sheep against the wolves. They did

On her forehead there is an invisible label which reads: “ADHD.” This word entered my life and became part of my vocabulary nine months ago, in a doctor’s office. Looking back, I realize that by the age of two years it had become quite evident that she was more active and more difficult to manage than the average child. However it didn’t occur to me at that time that anything was actually wrong. I guess I chalked it up to personality. I do remember that I was busy with her from the moment she awoke until she closed her eyes. In order to deal with her hyperactivity and her ability to destroy the house (literally), I practically moved into the park, which was, thankfully, around the corner from my apartment. park didn’t have walls to climb on, cabinets or dressers to unpack, or beds to jump on. It had slides, monkey bars and swings, and plenty of grass to run on. Exactly what she needed! And that is how I managed. I am a solution-oriented person, so for me this was the solution. Unfortunately, it didn’t solve her academic problems and the social and emotional issues that came along with the territory. Our finances also suffered, as my plans to “return to work after the baby gets big enough” never materialized. She was a full-time job in herself. That left us to manage on my husband’s modest salary. One day, in the middle of her firstgrade school year, I received a phone

not bite my head off as I expected, but they did say that my child was falling behind in her studies, both English and Hebrew, and that she is very disruptive in class. Further details included getting up when she feels like it, doesn’t follow instructions, blurts out answers without being called on . . . As if that wasn’t enough, they informed me that she was a “disaster” socially. They instructed me to take her to a psychiatrist, to have her evaluated and treated as needed. I wasted no time in getting this matter under control. I made lots of phone calls and did extensive research trying to find the most competent psychiatrist. When my daughter was finally diagnosed, I had mixed emo-

tions. I was relieved to know that a heretofore incomprehensible situation was at least making some sense. I also felt that a problem that has a name can also have a solution. However, at the same time, I felt overwhelmed and isolated. I was concerned that this diagnosis could become a label which would be used to judge and condemn my daughter. I wondered how she would manage to make it through school and in the world at large. I had no support from my husband, who was in denial, and kept on insisting that ADHD is not a real disorder. “What she needs,” he insisted, “is an iron hand!” He, like many parents, had difficulty coming to terms with the fact that his child was not like everyone else. Having a longstanding aversion to any kind of medication, for me to accept the fact that my child might need stimulants in order to enable her to function in school was not easy. (By the way, I am sure that many of you are wondering why an overactive child needs stimulants. My daughter and her ADHD counterparts seem to be the proud owners of brains that have underdeveloped attention spans. Ritalin targets this part of the brain, and assists in improving concentration and focus.) After much research, I was ready to comply with her doctor’s

recommendations, and she began taking a fairly low dosage. Although she had some side effects at first, such as trouble falling asleep and a decrease in appetite, with time these symptoms diminished entirely, and I must confess that it has made a huge difference in both our lives. Things settled into what could be considered a routine. Surprisingly, the semi-respite gave me time to stop and think (a luxury which I had not had for a long time), and I realized that underneath my relief was a strong feeling of loss and disappointment. Unconsciously, I had envisioned a child who, like me, would be a star student and a social butterfly. Wave after wave of anger and selfpity washed over me. Why was I elected to deal with this problem? Why did my daughter, my innocent child, have to struggle with this disability? Why couldn’t my husband be more supportive? Why couldn’t outsiders be more compassionate and understanding when she acted up? These questions lingered in my mind as I went through the motions of living. One evening, after a typically exhausting day, I sank onto the couch, leaned back my head and closed my eyes. A few seconds later (that’s how it felt to me, but it might have been longer), I opened my eyes,

ready to finish up the evening routine, and saw my daughter standing quietly next to me. I was more than a little bit surprised, since I couldn’t recall ever seeing her standing still. She looked at me with an adult-like seriousness, and asked, “Mommy, do you love me?” I felt my mouth drop open and my throat tighten. I reached out, pulled her on my lap and held her tightly. “Of course I do!” I whispered. “I love you very much!” After she had fallen asleep and I was washing up in the kitchen, I thought about what had just happened. I had been taking care of business and doing what needed to be done, but I had not been taking care of myself. I had not been nourishing myself physically, emotionally and spiritually, and that had resulted in feelings of resentment, which my daughter had obviously sensed. I began paying attention to my eating habits, by cutting out the junk foods, and including vitaminrich foods and extra supplements in my diet. I joined a dance/exercise group. I also added a whole range of “spiritual vitamins and exercises” which I would like to share with you. The first one, of course, is Vitamin A—Acceptance. I learned to accept my life as is. The second vitamin is Vitamin B—Belief. I believe that nothing

happens by chance. Everything is part of a master plan orchestrated by a loving G‑d, and both our gifts and our struggles are tailor-made to guide us toward spiritual growth and development. Vitamin C is Courage. I have the courage to move on despite uncertainties and fears. Vitamin D stands for Determination. I am determined to overcome my weaknesses and become G‑d-centered instead of me-centered. Vitamin F? You guessed it—Faith. I reaffirm daily that G‑d accompanies us and supports us every step of the way. Vitamin G is Gratitude. When I actively look for things to be grateful for, I am pleasantly surprised. Wherever I look, I see blessings. I notice the times my daughter does well and is manageable. I have begun to say “thank you” to G‑d for the miracle of life. I have begun to smile. Vitamin H—Humor. I can’t stress enough the importance of finding the funny bone in ourselves and our lives, and tickling it. I am beginning to respond with amusement rather than frustration. I am beginning to lighten up. There is so much to laugh about. And last, but not least, is vitamin P—Prayer, which, as far as I’m concerned, is much more effective than Prozac. As I recite Psalm 121, “I lift my eyes to heaven, from where will my help come?” my questions dissolve. “My help will come from G‑d! The One who created heaven and earth.” We sit together on the front stoop and review the contents of her backpack, making sure that nothing is missing. The big yellow school bus pulls up, and the door unfolds. My daughter jumps up, her blond hair curling around her

face in a halo of disarray. She glances back at me, and in that split second, the look in her eyes tells me what is in her heart and mind. She knows that from me she will always receive unconditional love. As she mounts the bus steps, I know that she will have the coping skills needed to march through the day. If there is something that she cannot handle, she will report back to me and receive validation and support. I cannot always rescue her. I cannot always solve her problems. But I can provide a sympathetic ear and, when she is ready, discuss ways in which she can handle the issue. In situations which escalate, I can intervene and advocate for her. I am her social worker, and she is my one and only client. The school bus rumbles down the street, and my upstairs neighbor comes down to meet me with her twomonth-old baby and a bag full of supplies. She is very glad to get out of the house for a few hours, and considers me the ideal babysitter. My neighbor hurries off to her uncle’s sweet shop, where she will decorate gift baskets and socialize. She is more than happy to split her paycheck with me, giving her a little pocket money and me the extra income needed to get through the month. I hold my tiny neighbor in my arms and he smiles up at me. After I feed and change him, he will keep me company while I do the housework. His placid demeanor never ceases to amaze me. By the time my daughter comes home from school, I will be ready to take her to the park, where we will eat supper and do some homework. My life has not turned out as pictured or planned, and that is fine with me. Instead of a pampered princess, I am becoming a courageous heroine. My daughter looks up at me, and trust and admiration are reflected in her eyes. Our journey is far from over, but we both are learning to enjoy the ride. •

Some people just never learn. For almost a year Pharaoh was literally plagued by every conceivable misfortune, yet he refused to let the Jewish people leave his land. Of course, he pleaded with Moshe during every plague to stop the great inconvenience, pain, and disaster that were befalling his country. He would even promise to let the Jews go, yet he never admitted guilt. He would beseech Moshe to stop the various plagues. "Pray for me and remove the frogs! I will let you serve your G-d in the desert." Sometimes he would offer unrestricted freedom, only to renege when the plagues ceased. Never, except on one occasion, did Pharaoh admit that G-d was correct and he was corrupt.

34 J a n u a r y 1 6 , 2 0 1 2

Even more troubling is Pharaoh's response. After the plague strikes Egypt he calls Moshe and Ahron and he tells them "this time I have sinned, Hashem is righteous and I and my people are the wicked ones" (Exodus 9:27) What caused Pharaoh to utter those submissive words at this particular time? Didn't he already see blood, frogs, pestilence, boils, wild animals, and a host of different miraculous misfortunes that befell his people? What was so special about the fire and ice that fell from the heavens that charred even this man's cruel temper?

PARSHAS VAERA

Hail to the Chief

That exception was the plague of hail. In fact, the plague of hail was so powerful that even Hashem Himself categorized it in a unique way. Moshe quoted Hashem to Pharaoh: "This time I shall send all my plagues against your heart, upon your servants, and your people so that you shall know that there is none like Me in the world" (Exodus 9:14). Why did Hashem consider the hail a more powerful act than His turning water into blood, or delivering pestilence, or wild animals or frogs? True, the hail did miraculously contain a fire ensconced in the ice, but all the plagues had miraculous attributes to them. Turning the Nile into blood is not an everyday occurrence either! What characteristic did the hail have to label it "all my plagues?"

Radio commentator, Paul Harvey, related the following story: William and his Aunt Caroline were constantly feuding. Actually, William was jealous of his aunt's popularity and social status in the New York of the late 1890's. Compared to her, he was considered a social outcast, and was never invited to any of her lavish parties. That would have been bad enough. Having to live next door to her was too much for William to bear. The sight of elegant carriages arriving and departing made him seethe. Yet he could do nothing. At least he did nothing until the family fortune was distributed and he received 100 million dollars. Then he info@communitylinks.info

knew what to do. He decided to rip down his mansion and build a monstrosity. It had 530 rooms, 350 baths, and a whopping 970 employees. It would be the grandest, most elegant guest house of it's kind. More carriages would pull up to his home in a day then to his aunt's mansion in a month! Her home would pale in comparison, and the tumult of it all would force her to move. William was right. Aunt Caroline moved way north of the shadow of her nephew's hotel. And then she ripped down her old home. With the mere 50 million that she received, she too, decided to build a hotel on the site of her old mansion! It would be even more elegant, with nicer rooms and better service than her nephew's. Two adjacent, competing hotels would have been built right next to each other if not for the wisdom of William's own hotel manager. He got the two feuding relatives together and explained that hostility is not the way to success.

We offer counseling for:

"If you two could just work together and adjoin the two hotels as one, it would become the most outstanding and influential accommodation on earth," he explained. They listened and followed his instructions. He even advised them to make sure that every opening between the structures could be sealed again in case of a renewed falling-out. But in the end, William Waldorf and his aunt, Caroline Astor decided to bury the hatchet and replace it with a hyphen. And the world's most luxurious accommodation was built -- The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. There are many opposing forces in the world. However, when they work in tandem, they are the most powerful force possible. During this plague, fire and ice, two opposing forces in the world of nature disregarded their differences all in the service of the Supreme Commander. When Hashem announced that He will send all of His plagues, he was referring to conflicting forces that work harmoniously. After that, even Pharaoh was sensible enough, albeit for a short moment, to see his frailty and delusions. When even the worst of men see fire and ice dance together on one mission, there is nothing he can do but watch in amazement and admit, "Hashem is the righteous one and I and my people are the wicked ones." When opposing opinions gather for one objective - to do the will of Hashem - they are as unstoppable as the hail that brought Pharaoh to his knees. •

ecently, I saw an amazing factoid that made me stop and think. It said, “If a mosquito, going 1 mile per hour, hits the windshield of a car going 60 miles per hour, the car will slow down by one-millionth of a mile per hour.” Not having majored in physics, this

came as a bit of a shock. I would think that a teeny, tiny, mosquito like that would have no effect on the two tons of glass and steel hurtling through space. And yet, it does. And, as Sir Isaac Newton would say, it’s not just a good idea, it’s the law! The laws of physics dictate that the collision MUST create an impact and the

The Observant Jew Making an Impact

car MUST be slowed and affected by its interaction even with the tiniest amount of mass. Now, we should all realize that science doesn’t make the rules of nature; it just observes them and records them for posterity in a journal of note using verbiage that causes the average Homo sapiens to scratch his cranium. That being said, when we say that physics demands that the car slow down from this minor impact, what we’re saying is that the world operates in such a way that it is physically impossible for something to come in contact with something else and be unaffected. OK, so why does the world operate that way? Because HaShem looked into the Torah and used it as a blueprint for the world. This tells us that the Torah itself, which is the essence of G-d’s Will on earth, requires that every force must have a result and every action, a reaction or consequence. I have heard that no prayer is ever wasted. Even if we don’t get what we asked for (presumably because HaShem knows it wouldn’t be good for us, or things might have been worse than we imagined and we got off easy,) that prayer is put towards something and has benefit. That

would fit in with what we’re saying, and the laws of Physics would just be confirming that every collision has an effect, no matter if it’s noticeable or not. Our actions, too, have impact, even if we don’t see them. Plus, what makes a minor impact today, may become magnified and create a greater impact at a later date. In chaos theory, the “butterfly effect” is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions; where a small change at one place in a nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state. The name of the effect, coined by Edward Lorenz, an American Mathematician and Meteorologist, is derived from the theoretical example of a hurricane's formation being contingent on whether or not a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeks before. Now, I don’t know exactly what the above paragraph means, other than that it tells you I know how to copy and paste information from Wikipedia. In essence, though, what starts out as a small, almost unnoticeable act here, today, can create a whirlwind of change elsewhere in the future. That’s exactly what we’ve been saying, except for one thing. I don’t believe this is “chaotic” at all. This is “Order Theo-ry,” a term I’ve just coined to explain that nothing in the world is random, but is instead part of G-d’s plan for His creations (hence the “Theo” in theory.) No matter what happens in this world, it was likely caused by something else, and will cause yet something else to happen. Imagine a giant Rube Goldberg device with levers, buckets, balls, strings, blocks, and all other manner of mechanisms. They all interact and react, and are part of achieving the final desired result. All of us act based on our personal experiences, learning, and natural inclinations. All our actions, and the various influences on us which directed those actions, can be traced back to

Creation, essentially when the Al-mighty gave the ball bearing its initial shove down the rails. All this being said, we should recognize that we can change the world. It may not be noticeable at first, or even ever. But HaShem sees the change, and others do too. The Maccabees fought a guerilla war with small groups against the massive Greek presence, and it didn’t happen overnight. They fought for three long years. People died. But they were making an impact. When you feel that you can’t do anything important -that you’re insignificant -- remember the Maccabees, and remember that mosquito who managed to slow the car even an infinitesimal amount. Then look to see what you can do to make the world a better place. But what if you’re not trying to change the world? What if you’re just going along, minding your own business? Then you’re not affecting anyone, right? Wrong. A forensic scientist was quoted as saying that every room has evidence of everyone who was ever there before. We can never go into a room without leaving something -- a hair, fingerprints, skin cells -- something will be left behind and able to be found. That not only happens in the physical realm, but our spiritual echoes reverberate long after we have left a room and evidence of our one-time presence can be found at a much later date. So, when the spiritual forensic experts go back to see what we left behind, we need to wonder what they will find. Will the level of the place have been raised by our actions, like the Torah tells us about Yaakov? Will our interaction with others make them want to get to know HaShem more, or chas v’shalom, less? Will people try to emulate our behavior? Should they? There’s no such thing as making a move without causing a ripple effect. We must therefore be very careful that we leave behind a shining guide light for others to follow. The results may be truly miraculous. •

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt into a medium bowl and set aside. Place the margarine, sugar, and brown sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer; cream together on medium speed until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Beat in the vanilla and eggs. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and continue to mix until a smooth batter forms. Turn off the mixer and fold in the chocolate chunks using the spatula. To form the cookies, scoop about 1/4 cup of cookie dough into your hands and roll it around into a ball; place them about 3inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets; you should get about 4 cookies on each pan. Press down the tops of the dough slightly and bake until the cookies are light brown, 12 minutes for chewy cookies, or about 15 minutes for crispy cookies. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough/cookie sheets.

REASONS TO CONSIDER A LIFE SETTLEMENT • Policy has not performed as anticipated • Need for cash flow • Beneficiary is now deceased • Premiums too costly • A change in estate size • A desire to purchase a survivorship policy • Changes in Estate Tax laws

If you are over age 70, we can show you how your life insurance policy might pay off now, while you are alive and still here to enjoy it! What’s more, you may be able to sell your policy for considerably more than its cash surrender value.

Busines Changes: • Buy/Sell funding is no longer required • Business is sold • Changes in deferred compensation benefits • Bankruptcy proceedings
