“TRAVELING THROUGH LIFE’S HIGHWAYS” By Rabbi Yaakov Glasman

“Life is a Highway” is more than just a popular song which won its author the Juno award for best single of the year in 1992, having topped the Canadian music charts and catapulted Tom Cochrane into international stardom (not that he was doing too badly beforehand), but his famous chorus has in fact become a philosophy in living. Like when first learning to drive, we stop and start, hesitant and unsure quite how to reach our destination, so too in life we are often challenged with those sharp turns and unexpected bumps that make it difficult to meet the goals we set out to achieve. But all too often life’s bumps and potholes are not the result of externally imposed problems or of relationships gone wrong, but rather they are a product of our own errors and mistakes. We can’t always blame it on our spouse, our boss, our kids, our health or any other factor aimed at vindicating the actions we perform and the words we utter. “There is no righteous person on earth who does only good and never sins” King Solomon assures us in Kohelet. Mistakes are symptomatic of the human condition and it’s not a question of if, but when and how often we err. We can of course minimize the number of mistakes we may make (especially those that affect other people) by simply thinking before we speak and act, but we will always make errors in judgement just as humankind has done since the dawn of creation think Adam’s sin with the Tree of Knowledge. Why then, did G-d create mankind in the first place if He clearly knew we were going to sin? Our Sages point out that prior to creation G-d consulted the Torah figuratively speaking, and asked what it thinks about the idea of creating man. The Torah exclaimed: “Why would you want to create man when there are times he will sin before you?!” to which G-d responded “Is it for nothing that I am called compassionate and slow to anger?! Before I created the world I created Teshuva (Repentance)!” Mistakes are a part of life, but rectifying them is an option never closed to us. In the soul stirring piece we recite on Rosh Hashana, “Unetane Tokef ”, we quiver as we read the words that articulate the possible outcomes for the year ahead. Who will live and who will die? Who will have peace and who will be tormented? Who will be prosperous and who impoverished? The angels tremble 6 SEPTEMBER / YOM TOV 2012

and even they are not guiltless before G-d. But with all the doom and gloom, the final words are deeply relieving, as they are uplifting: “But repentance, prayer and charity annul the harsh decree!” Repentance, or Teshuva, is like a “shield in the face of punishment”, as our Sages state in Ethics of Our Fathers. It is a gateway through which we can re-enter our past and fix it for the better. It is our ability to transcend time and reconnect with our timeless G-d. Through Teshuva, we can right the wrongs of the past and set new goals for the future, glossing over the bumps and potholes in the highway of life and paving the way for the positive journey ahead. But for Teshuva to become a reality in our lives, we must want to change - it doesn’t happen on its own. Coming to shule on Rosh Hashana creates the environment in which Teshuva can be achieved but ultimately we need a wake up call to actually achieve it - and that wake up call is the sobering sound of the shofar as it emanates from the ram’s horn, the symbol evoking memories of the ram Abraham sacrificed in substitute of his dear son Isaac in the gripping story of our first Patriarch. But perhaps the symbolism of the shofar runs even deeper. Its shape, narrow at one end and wide at the other, gives us a message of hope. Even when life seems difficult at one end, narrow and constrained by the errors we’ve made and because of the people we’ve hurt, we realize that at the other end there is an opening of forgiveness and hope for the days and years that lie ahead. There’s no point dwelling in the past, but we have everything to gain by focusing on the future. As one of my congregants once shared with me about that highway we drive on called life: the road ahead is seen through a windscreen the width of the car, but looking back requires only a rear view mirror the size of a small envelope. There is time for reflection on the past so we can learn from our mistakes and avoid repeating in the future, but this is a very small gap compared to the bright future that awaits us on that very special highway. May we merit a year of health, happiness and true peace in our holy land of Israel. Shanah Tova. Rabbi Yaakov Glasman is the Rabbi of St Kilda Hebrew Congregation and President of the Rabbinical Council of Victoria. TO ADVERTISE 0411.395.031

flexibility and strength. Strengthening and stretching exercises are prescribed for the core trunk muscles as well as the upper and lower limbs. These exercises are prescribed on an individual basis to meet the needs of the client. The Fitness Phase is designed to facilitate overall conditioning and to increase physical stamina and promote and encourage good exercise habits for life.

Pink Pilates is a physiotherapy based rehabilitation programme dedicated to helping women who have been diagnosed with cancer and have undergone treatment, whether it be surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy or a combination of the above. Pink Pilates is designed to help women who have been diagnosed with cancer take their first steps on the road to recovery. It is now well recognised that a modified exercise programme improves survival rates from cancer as well as improving physical and psychological functioning. There are numerous credible clinical studies with evidence to support this. The latest research has found that exercise can help boost the immune system, limit weight gain from chemotherapy, ease treatment side effects and more importantly, improve quality of life. The Pink Pilates programme consists of 10 one-on-one sessions with a physiotherapist, designed and delivered to meet the needs of the individual client. The programme is designed to restore physical strength, improve body confidence and incorporate exercise into the client’s lifestyle. The programme is flexible to accommodate the different phases of cancer treatment and recovery. The Pink Pilates programme is chronologically formatted into three phases. Timing of each phase is dependent on the client’s physical condition, the length of the healing process, the type of surgery involved, and the courses of the adjuvant treatments. Many variables may exist that will effect particular service and exercise choices given at the time. The three phases are the Post Op Phase, the Recovery Phase and the Fitness Phase. The Post Op Phase is designed to assist in the healing process of clients who are recently post –surgery to restore strength and flexibility to particular joints and muscle groups that have become weak and inflexible as the result of surgery. The Recovery Phase is designed to help improve energy levels and general well-being during cancer treatments. It aims to help clients manage fatigue and restore post-op 12 SEPTEMBER / YOM TOV 2012

triggers constant pain and tingling sensations. High blood sugar brings on premature aging. And because your body doesn’t need to break down any fat for energy, high blood sugar makes and keeps you fat. The pancreas regulates blood sugar levels by releasing insulin into the blood. As soon as sugar flows into the blood plasma, insulin follows. The insulin is then taken up by receptors to facilitate its entry into the cells. This continues until the pancreas stops making insulin or the receptors become insulin resistant from over use. der or liquid extracted from the tequila plant, has zero calories, and does not stimulate an insulin response. Artificial sweeteners like Aspartame, Splenda, and Sweet ‘n Low are toxic substances that create an imbalance and harmful situations in the body. Studies point toward an increase in overall weight when diet substances are consumed. Seemingly, tricking the body only stimulates the desire for more sweet things. Where to go from here? Start by crowding out the unhealthy with the healthy. Eat plenty of vegetables. The key is getting good recipes. Prepare vegetables as differently and as deliciously as you can. Focus on green leafy vegetables, as they are often most lacking in a persons diet. Try vegetables you have never prepared before. Don’t be fat shy. Healthy fats like coconut oil and olive oil along with Celtic sea salt, spices and herbs will jazz up the flavour without compromising your health. Cut out white products (rice, flour, sugar) and foods made with them. They can cause inflammation, obesity, and diabetes. You do not need them and the less you eat them, the less you will want them. Read ingredients labels. You will be surprised at how many “healthy” foods are full of sugar and junk. Remember that although the ingredients are ordered by quantity, manufacturers will sometimes use multiple forms of sugar so that they can list them further down on in the label. Do not eat anything with HFCS in it! Drink water and eat protein. Water curbs cravings and eliminates the question of what to drink when cutting out diet soft drinks. Inadequate amounts of protein can cause sugar cravings. Make a commitment to yourself and your health. You deserve it. Have a nutrition question? Want to know more about a nutrition topic?
