Your Kashrus Questions…Answered

ISINGLASS IN BEER Is it true that beer is filtered with isinglass Q.which is made from non-kosher fish? isinglass – a product made from Afish.theClassically, swim bladder of non-kosher sturgeon – was used to filter the protein particles out of beer. The particles are attracted to the isinglass, and then collectively fall to the bottom of the beer where they can be filtered out leaving the beer without any cloudiness. Nodah B’yedhudah YD 1:26 rules that this does not pose a kashrus concern, and one of his reasons is that such a miniscule amount of isinglass remains in the beer that it is batel (nullified). [In this case there is no concern of bitul issur l’chatchilah – intentionally diluting non-kosher into kosher – because the isinglass is put in with the specific intention of removing it.] Some hashgachos rely on this line of reasoning and others hold that items which are certified as kosher should meet a higher standard and not contain any nonkosher components. Nowadays, most beer companies do not use isinglass and instead use other methods to filter the beer.

MILK & HONEY HAND SOAP Is there a problem of basar b’chalav to use Q. milk and honey hand soap which contains both glycerin and milk in the ingredients? [If meat and milk are cooked together they create basar b’chalav which one may not (eat or) even have pleasure from. Accordingly, if animal-based glycerin is cooked with milk one would be forbidden to have any benefit from the resulting mixture.] It is permitted to use the hand soap for the A.following reason. One is only forbidden from having benefit

(hana’ah) from meat and milk which are cooked together, and the typical method of producing hand soap would be to just cold-blend the glycerin and milk ingredients without any cooking. Accordingly, one would be permitted to have benefit from that hand soap even if it contains both meat and milk. [Other factors to consider in this case are that (a) the glycerin may be from vegetable or pig sources, both of which would not create basar b’chalav (and only beef-based glycerin would raise a concern because beef is from an inherently kosher animal), and (b) there is likely a very small amount of milk in the soap such that the milk is batel b’shishim (less than 1/60 of the mixture) and does not give the status of basar b’chalav to the mixture.]

COFFEE (AND TEA) PODS I’d like to buy K-cups to go into the Q. Keurig coffee maker. They are small pods. Do they need a hechsher? There are hazelnut kinds and different teas as well. [The pods (also known as capsules and other A. names) are single-serve package of coffee grinds, tea leaves, or other powdered drinks. They are put into a specially designed coffee maker which pour water through the pod (which contains its own filter) thereby producing a single cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea.] The “rules” for these pods is the same as if the coffee or tea was not in the pod - if the powder is pure (regular or decaf), unflavored coffee or tea, the pod may be used even if it does not bear kosher certification, but any flavored item (as many of the teas and some of the coffees are) requires hashgachah. Even if the pod is kosher, one should not use it in a coffee maker that is also used for nonkosher products – such as in an office environment – without first consulting with your Rabbi.

Our Community HANNAH’S COAT By RABBI DR. JERRY LOB

A few years ago, my wife and I, and some of our children, went to visit my mother for a few days. As always, we had several suitcases, and I was going back and forth to the car to bring in all that we needed. It was winter and my mother noticed that I had removed my coat when I first arrived, and I was making the luggage runs in my shirt sleeves. “Jerry,” she said, “it’s freezing outside, you should put on your coat, you could get sick.” “Ma, I’m fifty years old,” I replied. Mom’s response: “so, just because you’re fifty years old, it’s ok to get sick?” I know, it sounds like a Jackie Mason routine. Recently, however, I have begun thinking about this interaction from a whole different perspective.

What is less well known, is a small but important detail mentioned in the Midrash regarding this garment: the “Me’il” miraculously grew with him. Hannah sewed it for him when he was a little boy and he wore it his whole life. He wore it as a young man, as an older man, and he was even wearing it when he was buried. It accompanied him throughout his life’s journey.

Love that we pour into each child when young, accompanies him/her through life

The Torah, in the book of Samuel, tells us the poignant story of Hannah, mother of Samuel. Hannah, wife of Elkana, struggled with fertility problems and did not conceive for many years. This intensely painful experience was made even more traumatic by the fact that Penina, Elkana’s other wife, was the mother of ten children, and she had taken to teasing Hannah for her childlessness. As we read her story, it is impossible to not be moved by the depth of Hannah’s suffering. And we feel, too, her ecstatic joy when her prayers are finally answered with the birth of her son Samuel. The Torah continues her story. Hannah raises Samuel, nurses him, weans him, and then brings him to Eli, the priest at the Holy Temple, to live there, to continue his education in Torah. It is here that G-d first speaks to him, and he grows to be the leader of the Jewish people, a judge, and a prophet, and is compared in the Talmud to both Moses and Aaron. When Hannah leaves Samuel with Eli, she gives him the gift of a “Me’il”, a small robe or coat, that she sewed for him. All of this is explicit in the text of the Book of Samuel.

The commentaries explain the reason for the miracle of the growing coat. Hannah put so much love for Samuel into every stitch of that garment. And so much joy, and all her hopes, dreams, tears, and prayers were poured into that fabric. He was surrounded by, enveloped in, her love, a love that then grew in this little boy, blossoming into a profound love for G-d and for every Jewish man, woman and child.

The power of a parent’s love can’t be measured. We all need to make “Me’ils” for each of our children. Love that we pour into each child when young, accompanies him/her through life and continues to keep him warm, and nurtures her sense of security. The world is a very challenging place, often scary and very difficult. The more love the child feels, the more he takes that love with him, the more love he has to give to G-d, his spouse, children, and others. So, maybe the next time I’m visiting my mother in the winter and she says, “it’s freezing outside, you should wear a coat,” I’ll respond, “Ma, thanks to you and Dad (ob”m), I’m always wearing a coat, the coat you two made for me, and it keeps me so warm, still.”

Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought. TO ADVERTISE CALL 773.336.8225
