News from the ARC side The BIG AND IMPORTANT NEWS for this month is once again “CONSTRUCTION”. We are an ci‐ pa ng that the paving on the east side of Franklin will be finishing up before the 2nd of October. That means that the traffic switchover would occur a day or so later. (Weather permi ng and if all things go as planned) Once the traffic is switched to the east side, ini ally the bus stop and path to Hilltop will remain open. Shortly a er the traffic switchover, the GRT will make arrange‐ ments to provide a special run in the morning and a ernoon to ARC. The Region will be arrang‐ ing with the contractor to provide a temporary “lay‐by” for the bus at our loca on and a fenced path from 466 Franklin to the stop loca on. We will have more detailed informa on as we pro‐ gress‐ and this will be shared with all of those who travel by bus. Several important things to pre‐ pare yourselves for: 1. Once the special route is in place‐ there will be no safe route to the Hilltop stop and there‐ fore YOU MUST catch the special in the morning at the bus depot and take the special home. Staff will meet the bus in the morning and escort people out to the temporary stop every day to ensure everyone is safe walking. 2. There will be no bus service during the day me‐ if you work part‐ me or volunteer you will need to speak to me regarding arrangements to either work a full day or not come in to work the days you volunteer‐ unless you have some alterna ve transporta on arrangements. 3. If you walk to work‐ there will be no truly safe pathway on this side of Franklin‐please con‐ tact me to discuss what op ons might work for you. 4. There will always be access to our building for cars, vans and Mobility Transit. There will be mes where flagmen may have to flag you on but you will have access. We will keep everyone informed as to details as soon as they become available In other news: we have some new faces in our building. The Independent Living Choices (ICL) program has located to our former Educa on room. The Manager and Instructors are in and out o en‐and I am sure you have heard the names Nancy, Sharon, Jane and Elyse as being here now. We are quite a cozy group! As a result of the move above, we decided to “repurpose” part of the wood shop into our “ARC Lounge” – the idea behind the lounge is to provide a quieter place for par cipants to go during the day when there is no work or if they need a break from the floor. We have some books, couches, a computer and a TV available to use. Par cipants are aware that they must speak to an instructor before using the space and that its purpose is to be a place for quiet reflec on and that they must be respec ul of others using the space. Just a reminder that we will be closed Monday October 12 for Thanksgiving and from December 25/2015 to January 5/2016 for Christmas. Sincerely, Karen Karen Ferguson Manager ARC Industries P.S. Bill’s journey through the eyes of his very proud Coach...

Well wishers gathered at Community Living Cambridge to wish Bill good luck before heading to Los Angeles! www.communitylivingcambridge.ca

“To put it in to perspective this was a 4 year journey of competing, training and hard work to earn a spot that hundreds of Canadian swimmers were trying for in Vancouver.”

The pain you feel today , will be the strength you feel tomorrow.

The 2015 World Summer Games had the unparalleled spirit, enthusiasm and teamwork that are trademarks of all Special Olympics events. With 6,500 athletes represen ng more than 160 countries, along with 30,000 volunteers and a 500 000 spectators, the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games were a success. Staged in Los Angeles dur‐ ing the week of July 25 – August 2, 2015 the games were the largest sports‐humanitarian event anywhere in the world this year and the biggest single event in Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games. To top it off our Bill Smith was there represen ng Canada. This was the end of Bill’s long journey. He earned his spot on the Special Olympic Swim Team as 1 of 22 swimmers that represented our country. Bill competed at the Regional, Provincial, and Na onal Level to earn this spot. To put it in to perspec ve this was a 4 year journey of compe ng, training and hard work to earn a spot that hundreds of Canadian swimmers were trying for in Vancouver. Bill won gold and silver medals for individual swims. He also received a fourth place fin‐ ish for a relay team swim. He won the silver first, just .07 seconds behind gold medalist Frederic Torrent, of Switzerland, in the 25m backstroke, with a me of 39.89 seconds. The Gold was next in 25m Freestyle with a finishing me was 30.56 seconds. Over the last year Bill trained and a ended 2 Training Camps with his fellow Canadian Swimmers. This hard work has earned him his amaz‐ ing results in LA. Bill is the first Cambridge Special Olympic Athlete to earn Medals at the World Level. Congratula ons Bill Smith. The Game Asylum video bus vibrated and rocked the whole evening as par cipants tore up the dance floor, showing off their moves with the interac ve dance video games. The more serious gamers experienced many an adrenaline rush due to the many challenging adventures within the role‐playing games. The bus itself is very technical, with video games emi ng flashing lights, sounds, and images. All gamers were engaged and entertained the en re evening. The par ci‐ pants were asked to rate the bus from one to ten, and the overall response was; “A TEN for sure, it was the best night ever!” Community Connec ons next Game Asylum night will be on Nov 03, 2015. All the par cipants from Peachtree were able to enjoy 3 nights and 4 days of camping at Pinehurst Conserva‐ on area from Aug 18th to Aug 21st this summer. Many smiles and much an cipa on greeted the staff on the morning of Tuesday Aug 18th. They were all quick to load up the van and head out. The three men of the house shared the 8 man tent; wow there was lots of room. The lady of the house shared the trailer with the 2 staff. I have never seen a tent and gazebo go up so fast in all the years I've been camping. So many smiles and lots of laughter heard during this me. Then it was onto the fun! The group broke down into smaller groups and went on hikes to different areas around the park. Then of course BBQ and campfire in the evening. Wednesday was beach day and fishing. We did get rain (okay lots of hard rain) in the late evening but that's when we broke out the ice cream! Thursday was again hiking, fishing and the beach. All the par cipants were so coopera ve with each other and just seemed so relaxed. Then it was Friday, me to gather our things and head on home. Everyone made sure our camping spot was le clean and dy. Pulled out just before lunch, red but glad to have had such an experience. By Neena Rikkonen Residen al Counsellor Peachtree Group Home

Ben’s first camping trip, was special!

Ben and I began our camping trip with a nice dinner at Montana's, a restaurant he en‐ joys ea ng at. We ran into a former staff (Maxine) who had worked at Wendy court, and he was very excited to see her; he laughed and smiled every me she walked by! A erwards we took off to my backyard for Ben to ex‐ perience his first camping experience! His eyes lit up as soon as he saw the tent, as he'd been talking about his trip for weeks before hand. He was very excited! The first thing we did was swimming, because Ben loves the pool. We laughed a ton, told funny jokes, and I sang songs to him, which he seemed to think was pre y funny!! He also loved the visitors he got during this trip. His friend James Murray and Megan stopped by to join us in a water fight around the yard. Ben thought it was quite funny when we were all slipping around the grass. We finished off the night with a relaxing fire in the backyard, and of course, yummy smores. Overall, Ben’s first camping experience was a success! He loved sleeping in the tent, where we shared lots of sto‐ ries, and laughed a lot. We are both looking forward to taking it to the next level and going to a real camping ground! By Jessica Musso from Wendy Court.
