Dining in Bedford ranges from traditional town centre public houses, serving hearty food plus real and craft ales, to more modern restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. The surrounding villages offer high quality pubs and restaurants that come highly recommended. Bedford is a proud home to a variety of live music, comedy and entertainment and also has a good range of film, theatre and arts venues. The Higgins Museum and Art Gallery collections are not to be missed, not only for their retelling of the story of the development of Bedford but also for the world-famous exhibitions of watercolour paintings and ceramics. Just a step away in the cultural quarter are two small and unique religious museums, The Panacea Society Museum and the John Bunyan Museum. Many of the stunning parks and beautiful open spaces of Bedford are Green Flag rated and enjoyed by all. Explore the parks and cafes and take a stroll along the beautiful town centre riverside Embankment and onwards to the relaxing Priory

Country Park for leisurely walks and plenty of wildlife. Interesting guided town walks are available to book as well as seasonal boat trips on the John Bunyan Community Boat. A history of Bedford Bedford was at the centre of Roman Britain with the River Great Ouse valley as its ‘breadbasket’. Grain from this area could be taken down river to the coast, transhipped and used to supply the garrison at Hadrian’s Wall. The recently-discovered Roman Villa at Manton Lane is throwing a new light on our early history.

Since before the Romans there would have been a ford across the river near the current town bridge and in Saxon times it is said that a chieftain called Beda was in charge, leading to the name Beda’s Ford and thence Bedford. Looking at today’s maps, it can be seen that all roads lead to the crossing, though it is not as apparent as you actually approach the Bridge. By the time William the Conqueror swept through the country there would have been a timber bridge, which had become a stone one when the castle was under siege by Henry III in 1224 and stone from its demolition was used for repairs. The River Great Ouse had played an important part in the town’s history since before the Romans. Navigation from the Wash, and therefore the North Sea, possible from 1689, allowed coal, salt, iron and hemp to be brought upriver, with malt, peas, beans, barley, oats, wheat and wood

taken downstream by horse-hauled barges. Coal merchant Joseph Barnard became wealthy enough in 1799 to open his own bank (with permission of the Bank of England), minting his own coins and notes from a building near the Town Bridge. In late Victorian times roller skating rinks were the recreational social club of the day, where those with enough energy could visit for fun and celebration. Bedford had one of the first in 1879 on Rink Island near what is now Bedford Rowing Club, with the nearby (now demolished) Rink pub on Duckmill Lane. It was open air but with covered shelters, adjacent lawn tennis courts and even dancing to a string band! Roller skating became so popular that the outdoor rink was superseded by the indoor Castle Rink (holding 3000 people), across the river in front of Castle Mound, opening in 1909. After the craze faded, this was transformed into the Plaza Cinema in 1929, then the Century Club in 1969, finally closing in 1974. For over a hundred years from late Victorian times, the River Great Ouse was the centre of Bedford’s life in the summertime. Punts and rowing boats could be hired from the river end of Newnham Road and also at Chetham’s Boats, now Bedford Rowing Club.

Band Night on the River, 1907 6 In & Around Bedford 2017

Evenings and Sundays saw Bedfordians dressed in their finery, especially the ladies, parading along the promenade or in the boats. Until WW2 there was a floating bandstand from which a few musicians would play, the sound across the water

attracting huge crowds along the riverbank as well as in boats on the river. The recession in the 1920s led to an unemployment project, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bedford, which saw the excavation of the 3ft deep Longholme Boating Lake enabling children to boat more safely. Bedford’s population expanded dramatically in late Victorian times due to the arrival of the industrial revolution, when James and Frederick Howard opened their new Britannia Works in 1858 opposite Bedford Hospital in Kempston Road. This became the largest producer of agricultural implements nationally, being exported all over the world, and which Garibaldi, the Italian patriot, visited in 1864 and later saw a demonstration of steam ploughing at Clapham Park. Another engineer, W H Allen moved to Queens Park in 1894, because of the skills Bedford could offer, expanding rapidly and producing the generators for the Titanic, Britannic and Olympic ships. It was said that in WW2, anything that floated had a piece from Allens on board. Bedford might also have become a major manufacturer for four-wheeled vehicles, but Adams cars and Saunderson’s tractors failed in 1912 and 1923. The town could also have been the UK international centre for airship travel, but the demise of the R101 in 1930 meant that Lord Thomson’s grandiose plans for Cardington as an Imperial hub for air travel never came to fruition. Housing in Queens Park and Ampthill Road developed to accommodate the workforces.

The railway came to the town from Bletchley in 1846, bringing an end to the era of the daily ‘Bedford Times’ stagecoach to London. The direct railway line to St Pancras followed 12 years later. The Harpur Trust schools were another Bedford attraction, following their decision in 1873 to provide for the education of more children. The [Girls]High School and Girls’ Modern School opened in 1882, with Bedford School (formerly the Grammar School in St Paul’s Square) moving to its larger new premises in 1891. The offer of affordable, private schooling brought large numbers of professional people, retired civil servants and Army and Navy officers to Bedford, many of whom had seen service in India. Bedford’s Embankment is rightly called the “Jewel in the Crown”. It was Joshua Hawkins, five-times Mayor of Bedford from 1883, who was the driving force for the development of the Embankment area for recreation. He was also behind several other projects; the new Bedford Park on the north side of the town, the bridge over the River at Prebend Street and the Suspension Bridge. But there was a major obstacle to the proposed gardens; a collection of two dozen houses occupied either by the ne’erdo-wells or by the tradesmen of the town, according to which report you believe, called Waterloo. It was decided that the houses should be demolished, leaving the area clear. William Barron & Son, landscape

gardeners, already providing the new Park, were engaged to carry out the design and planting. In World War II, Bedford became the largest centre for the BBC outside London. In 1939 the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Theatre Orchestra, Theatre Chorus and Religious Department had all been evacuated to Bristol, but with the onset of the bombing Blitz in 1940, targeting the docks there, they felt it necessary to move their studios, billets and staff to a safer part of the country. So in June 1941, a special train wound its way from Bristol to Bedford with over 400 musicians, engineers and staff on board. But conductor Sir Adrian Boult did not come with them; he cycled the 125 miles, stopping for lunch in Aylesbury! The BBC had seven studios around the town including the Corn Exchange, the Bunyan Meeting, St Paul’s Church for the religious broadcasts and Bedford School Great Hall. The 1944 promenade concert season was evacuated from the Albert Hall to Bedford because of the threat of the V1 bombs in London. Glenn Miller had arrived in London in June 1944 with his band. He too was concerned about the V1 bombs and wished to operate from a centre away from London. After struggling to get transport, the band fortunately arrived in Bedford on Sunday, July 2 because the next evening a V1 hit what had been their billet at Sloane Court, Chelsea, killing 74 American military personnel – there almost was no Glenn Miller band!

Future Developments –

Bedford Auction Centre Edward VII had just acceded to the throne when the Bedford firm of auctioneers W&H Peacock was founded. It was 1901 and Walter Peacock had just returned from the Boer War to find that he’d lost his job at Stafford, Rogers & Merry auctioneers.

Under independent ownership, W&H Peacock along with Locke & England, employ more than forty staff at their three auction centres in Bedford, St Neots and Leamington Spa and can offer more than 375 years of auction experience.

Outraged by his former employers’ behaviour he founded the company as a direct rival to them and held his first sale at Bedford cattle market in September of the same year. In April 1902, Walter’s brother Harry became a partner forming W&H Peacock, which continued as a partnership until the late 1980s.

This year sees W&H Peacock announcing their planned move to a spacious, purpose built Auction Centre situated close to the southern bypass on Wallis Way.

As the business has developed and grown, the Peacock family has retained close links with the company. Walter’s son Robert joined the company in 1921 and he went on to be its longest serving member of staff – and Walter’s grandson, Mr Dudley Peacock, was with the firm for almost 50 years.

Building work on the project started in February and the new premises will open in November 2017. The new Auction Centre will provide five spacious auction rooms, reception area, offices, meeting rooms, gallery display areas and a fully serviced restaurant. To further enhance the customer experience the Auction Centre will have wifi and modern audio visual systems, over 200 parking spaces, excellent loading facilities

and be set in landscaped surroundings. We plan to move our regular Saturday auctions plus our monthly sales of Antiques & Collectables to the new centre and also hope to extend the variety and types of specialist sales. Some current sales will continue at the existing auction rooms in Newnham Street.

& Green Spaces

In & Around Bedford 2017 13

The Embankment

Bedford’s stunning Embankment is one of the most beautiful places in the centre of town. Just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre, you can get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a relaxed environment. From Victorian times, the Embankment has been enjoyed by all, with its tree lined avenues and open spaces. The recently restored Victorian bandstand is a stunning landmark in the middle of the beautiful riverbank walk. Until quite recently, open air concerts were held in the bandstand most afternoons and some Summer Events still take place there. The River Ouse has many iconic bridges, the Suspension bridge probably being the most famous. Opened in 1888, it links the Embankment and Mill Meadows.

The River Great Ouse through Bedford is a great venue for walking with over ten miles of footpaths, from Willington to Bromham, frequently on both sides of the River. The river, which runs through Bedford, must certainly be described as the Jewel in the Crown. It supplied the power to grind corn at Duckmill and Newnham. In the 21st century the river once again supplies power with the new Hydro Power Plant on the site of the former Bedford Boat Slide close to the Bedford Schools’ Boathouse. In the 1970’s the locks, which had fallen into disrepair, were rebuilt and the river was once again open to the sea. These days the river is host to one of the largest free outdoor events, second only to London’s Notting Hill Carnival. The biannual River festival takes place in July on alternate years, the next one is 2018 and there is also an annual regatta on the river.

Parks Bedford Park

Each year since 2007 Bedford Park has been awarded green flag status, an award given to the parks that reflect the highest standards. football, cricket, rounders and bowls are all played there. The recently restored old Pavilion building now houses the award winning Pavilion in the Park. Set in stunning surroundings, Bedford Pavilion is the jewel in the crown of Bedford Park, an all-day coffee bar cafe destination and a hub for the Bedford Park Community. Open 7 days a week, all year round.

Great Denham Country Park

This most recent country park initially opened fifteen years ago and once the second stage is complete, will also have sports pitches and a café. Great Denham Country Park was formed as part of the westward expansion of Bedford towards the village of Great Denham. It is bordered on the north by a new housing development and in the south by the River Great Ouse. It is mainly composed of grassland, with some woodland and several small lakes.

Biddenham Country Park

This latest proposed country park, north of Bromham Road and The Ouse Valley Way, will be an exciting addition to Bedfordshire, having cycle routes and footpaths stretching from the Clapham Road (A6) roundabout almost to Bromham Bridge when it opens in a year or two’s time.

Woodlands Putnoe Wood

A deceptively large wood attached to the rear of Mowsbury Park. Outside of the clearly defined footpaths is a woodland left to its own devices with an enclosed feel, boasting the presence of Tawny Owls and Nuthatches. A rare patch of nature in an urban setting, ideal for walkers, runners and a child’s game of hide and seek. Free Parking is available.

Relaxed Remarkable Refreshing The Bedford Park CafĂŠ

Open 9am-5pm every day for Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch and Tea.

Chicksands Woods

These woods are planted in the Greensand Ridge Walk area that runs from Leighton Buzzard in Beds to Gamlingay in Cambs. Chicksands Wood is a plantation of oak and ash trees, which is in part owned by the Ministry of Defence. Parts of the perimeter of the wood overlook, with a very limited view, the MOD land. There is limited parking at the wood entrance at Appley Corner so tuck any vehicle in tight to allow others to enjoy it too! These woods have some good walking trails to try. In the peaceful woods you will find lots of flora and fauna with pretty bluebells in the spring and a variety of woodland birds.

Maulden Wood

An attractive mix of semi-natural broadleaf woodland, acidic grassland and conifer plantations and part of the Ampthill Forest covered and looked after by the Forestry Commission.

Talking Statues

in Bedford

If statues could talk, what stories would they tell? Arts producers Sing London are working with the Love Bedford Business Improvement District (BID), its theatres and museums to animate 7 statues across Bedford this April and have commissioned some of Bedford’s most celebrated writers, actors and comedians to bring the town’s statues to life. Pass a Talking Statue, swipe your smartphone on a nearby plaque and presto, get a call back from John Bunyan (as voiced by Matt Berry), Big Band leader Glenn Miller (written by Toby Litt) or the 5-metre tall silver face (as voiced by Al Murray)! Each has a story to tell and, together, they tell Bedford’s story. The project launches on 11th April, will last for a year and has been funded by The Harpur Trust and town centre businesses and in partnership with Bedford Borough Council, The Higgins Art Gallery and Museum, The Place Theatre and Bedford Central Library and with generous assistance from Audible.co.uk

Using drama, humour and location technology, Talking Statues breathes new life into the statues that surround us. Some approaches are dramatic, others comic and others flights of pure fantasy. All aim to persuade the public look at the statues with new eyes. Meet the Statues: • Matt Berry (The IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh) voices John Bunyan, whose 1678 masterpiece The Pilgrim’s Progress has outsold every book in publishing history bar the Bible • Al Murray (The Pub Landlord) voices Reflections of Bedford - what’s going on inside these two giant silver heads? • Colin Salmon (Resident Evil, 24: Live Another Day) voices John Howard - why was he taken prisoner in Brittany? • Toby Litt (deadkidsongs, Journey into Space) imagines Glenn Miller zooming back through space and time to tell us what he’s seen since his plane disappeared in 1944 • Bedford storytellers Mark Steinhardt and Richard Mann give a voice to the War Memorial - what is this old warrior thinking as he stands by the river? To hear the statues speak, just swipe your phone on the QR-coded plaque or type the url on the plaque into your phone browse and the statue will call you back! There is no cost to the user.

Getting to

Bedford, parking and transport Bedford benefits from excellent transport links and is easy to reach by car or public transport.

Parking in Bedford couldn’t be easier with plenty of spaces at multi-storey and surface car parks in the town centre.

The town is conveniently located between the A1 and M1 and is well served by the A421 dual carriageway which links the two major roads as well as the A6 and A428.

All Council-run town centre car parks are free to park in every Saturday for the first two hours, after which normal charges apply. So, essentially, the clock starts after two hours, and however long you stay for, those first two hours are free.

There are regular rail services to Bedford from St Pancras via Thameslink, with trains arriving and departing every 30 minutes. The journey time is approximately 40 minutes from St Pancras.

In addition, parking is free on-street and in a number of council-run car parks after 6pm Monday to Saturday and all Sunday.

Bedford also has a Park and Ride service, with a site in Elstow. This facility has a spacious car park, CCTV on site and a waiting room with toilet facilities. The buses operate seven days a week on a high frequency from approximately 6:30am until 11pm (please refer to timetables).

Visitors have the ability to pay for their parking using their mobile phone – making it easier to park in and around the town. Payment can even be made via an iPhone app (other smartphones are available!). Many of the car parks have been awarded the nationally recognised Park Mark. This is recognition that a car park has been approved by the Police and measures are in place to ensure the safety of visitors and their vehicles. For further information on parking, including prices and a location map of all council car parks, please visit www. bedford.gov.uk/parking Timetables of all buses which serve Bedford Borough are also available on the Council website: www.bedford. gov.uk/businfo Full train timetables are available at www.nationalrail.co.uk

Historic Buildings Castle Mound

The Castle Mound is all that remains of Bedford castle, an 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, destroyed by Henry III after his siege of 1224. Today the motte still stands, forming part of an archaeological park restored in 2009. The mound is located adjacent to The Higgins, in Bedford town centre, just off The Embankment.

Bromham Mill

The present mill is an 18th or early 19th century rebuilding in brick, timber and stone on the site of earlier mills. It had two waterwheels, one wooden and undershot driving three pairs of stones, and the other iron and breastshot driving two. However. only the latter remains and was restored in 1980. From the 1930s, due to low water flow, an oil engine was needed to give power with electricity supplying the other machinery. Much of the machinery is still visible inside the mill. On the outside an eel trap was fitted into the sluice gate. Across the courtyard to the west stands the Millers House whilst there are fine weatherboarded barns to the north. There is an onsite cafe, a picnic site and children’s outdoor play area. National Mills Weekend – Saturday 14th May & Sunday 15th May, 10am – 4pm Bridge End, Bromham MK43 8LP Tel 01234 824330 www.friendsofbromhammill.org.uk/

Elstow Abbey

Elstow Abbey was founded in 1078 by the Countess Judith, niece of William the Conqueror. It became the eighth richest of the 106 Benedictine nunneries existing at the time. It retains many Norman features and in its heyday, the building was twice its recent size. It is unusual in having a completely separate, 13th century, bell tower. John Bunyan was also baptised in the font to be found in the abbey. Church End, Elstow, Beds MK42 9XT Tel 01234 261477 abbeyelstow@gmail.com www.elstow-abbey.org.uk

Bushmead Priory

The Priory Church of St Mary commonly called Bushmead Priory. Built in 1195 a rare survival of the complete refrectory of an Augustinian priory, with fine timber roof and notable 14th century wall paintings. Bushmead was disbanded at the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the property passed to Sir William Gascoigne, a retainer of Cardinal Wolsey. Please call to find out opening times, entry by prebooked guided tours only. Located off B660, 2 miles South of Bolnhurst, Bedfordshire MK44 2LD Tel 01234 860000 www.english-heritage.org.uk 38 In & Around Bedford 2017

Stevington Mill

A postmill originally built around 1770, it was still in use until the 1930’s. Constructed around a central post so that it can be turned to face the wind, this impressive postmill is the only complete windmill left in the county. For an inside view of the postmill, visitors can obtain a key from the Royal George pub in Silver Street, Stevington. A small returnable deposit is required. 2 Windmill Lane, Stevington MK43 7QZ

Willington Dovecote and Stables

16th-century stone dovecote and stable building belonging to the National Trust commissioned by Sir John Gostwick, who served as Cardinal Wolsey’s Master of Horse. They were completed around 1541 with the dovecote boasting an impressive 1,500 nesting boxes lining the walls. The cote and adjoining stable block are thought to have been built with stone scavenged from nearby Newnham Priory after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Beside the dovecote is a contemporary stable block, most likely built from the same stone. Together they are all that remains of what was once a range of buildings that made up Gostwick’s estate. Opening hours are limited and admission by written appointment only; phone for details. Church End, Willington MK44 3PX Tel 01234 838278 www.nationaltrust.org.uk for details.

Houghton House

Houghton House was built in the early 17th century by Mary Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, as an elaborate hunting lodge. An unusual mix of Jacobean and classical design, it retains two important early elements of classical architecture in the form of its two loggias, which have been attributed to Inigo Jones. The house may have been the inspiration for the ‘Palace Beautiful’ in the 17thcentury Christian writer John Bunyan’s religious epic, The Pilgrim’s Progress. When it was dismantled in 1797, the ruins survived as a garden feature in the grounds of nearby Ampthill Park. Open any reasonable time during daylight hours until dusk or 6 pm, whichever is earliest. Free Entry. Goldings Celebrating 150 Years!

Established in 1867 by William Day as an ironmongery, Goldings has always been a family run business. It was originally situated at 80 High Street, now occupied by Harrison & Simmonds, both of which are the only two shops to remain open throughout the 20th century and a full decade into the 21st century. Goldings was actually the first commercial premises in Bedford to have gas central heating! 54 In & Around Bedford 2017

Moving forward into a new era, Goldings has recently been taken over by Chris and Kate Temple from predecessor Vic Warner, who started as an assistant at Goldings in 1961. Chris and Kate are totally committed to continuing the businesses’ dedication to customer service and product knowledge in ironmongery that Goldings has always prided itself on. The staff’ s friendliness and attention to detail is what draws customers to come back time and time again, ‘It’s not unusual to serve people who have been shopping here for 50 years or more’ says Kate. Chris was actually a previous employee at Goldings for 6 years leaving in 2005 but was unable to find another job that made him as happy as working at the busy shop. Kate looks after the admin side of the

business as well as assisting Chris with the buying and selling on the shop floor. Vic continues to come into the shop on Wednesdays and is now in his 57th year of service. As well as being experts in ironmongery, Goldings is an aladdin’s cave of goods and services. They stock a wide range of hand, power and garden tools, plumbing and electrical equipment, lighting, pest control and fireworks. Bedford... a multicultural town

Bedford Borough is one of the most ethnically diverse authorities in the East of England; with up to 100 different ethnic groups living within its boundaries, it boasts a wealth of culture, tradition, and cuisine. Bedford has long been a place where people from across the world have travelled to and settled. Since its earliest origins, Bedford has been the home of different cultures and nationalities that, over the millennia, have shaped the town into what it has become today. From its earliest beginnings, Bedford Borough was home to the Neolithic people who settled in the area to farm the fertile soils of the Ouse valley. During the Iron Age those living in Bedford Borough belonged to the Celtic Catuvellauni tribe, one of the most powerful tribes in Britain. The Celts were followed by the occupying Romans who arrived some 2,000 years ago. When the Romans left they made way for the Anglo Saxons who began arriving from overseas, some as warriors and some peacefully to find land to farm. Bedford now a Saxon town was captured by the invading Vikings who travelled up the river from the east raiding and looting as they went. The Vikings settled in Bedford but their reign was cut short as the Saxon armies won Bedford back , they in turn were to be overthrown by the conquering Normans who went on to build their castle on and around what is now Castle Mound. With no more invasions, as the centuries progressed, Bedford and its inhabitants established themselves and the town slowly expanded. As the 20th century arrived Bedford began to expand rapidly and with the onset of WW1 the town welcomed a new, but this time friendly invasion, of some 22,000 Scottish soldiers, The Highlanders, who came to Bedford to train before being sent out to the front-line. With their striking uniforms, different accents and ways, The Highlanders also brought with them glamour and excitement. This welcoming of troops from far a flung place was once again seen in Bedford nearly 30 years later during WW2 when American servicemen from the surrounding Army bases became a familiar sight in the town. Such was their

58 In & Around Bedford 2017

presence that an all-American baseball match was played by two service teams at Bedford Rugby ground, a game which left many of the native Bedfordian onlookers quite baffled. After the war The London Brick Company at Stewartby was expanding, with full employment, there was much demand for workers. The brick company positively encouraged workers from across Europe, who had been displaced by war, to come and work for them, men came from Poland, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. But with further expansion workers were brought in from Italy and later from India, Pakistan, and West Indians. The company even set up a recruitment office in Naples, Italy, bringing in hundreds of men to work at the factory. London Brick was at one time the largest brickworks in the world employing over 2,000 people, had over 130 chimneys and was producing 500 million bricks a year. As these workers settled they became part of the fabric of Bedford and the different communities grew and flourished. Their influence making a positive and enduring mark on the town. In the 21st century, as new countries joined the European Union, Bedford once again welcomed different communities from across Europe’s emerging lands such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Malta and Slovenia. These communities have brought with them their own culture, traditions and cuisine which have further enhanced the Borough. Today Bedford is home not only to communities from Europe but also to communities from across the continents including Asia, The Middle East, Africa and Australasia. Bedford’s fabric as a town is, without doubt, woven by many nations. From the Bedford Polish Festival to Lebanese Cuisine, from the Bedford Indian Communities Festival of Light to Italian delicacies, from French Patisseries to the celebration of the festival of Eid-Al-Fitr in Bedford Park, Bedford is truly a Borough which is proud to be one of the most ethnically diverse authorities in the East of England.

Surrounding Villages&

Country Pubs The town of Bedford itself is surrounded by many beautiful villages, all with a wealth of history of their own. Below we take a look at just a few and what makes them worth a visit. It would also, of course, be rude not to sample some of the food and beverages on offer at the local traditional public houses.

Bromham

Situated on the River Great Ouse, Bromham bridge has 26 arches spanning the river leading to the 17th century mill which has been restored to full working order. Bromham heritage trail gives an interesting insight into early village life. Home of the annual Bromham Show and Bromham Mill Apple Day. The beautiful St Owens Church is also well worth a visit and the surrounding walk is a must. The Swan Bridge End, Bromham MK43 8LS 01234 823284 The Prince of Wales 8 Northampton Rd, Bromham, Bedford MK43 8PE 01234 822447 www.theprinceofwalesbromham.co.uk

Cardington

The Cardington sheds, which can be seen dominating the skyline for many many miles around, are a poignant reminder of Great Britain’s race for supremacy of the skies; these magnificent structures were built to house the R100 and the ill-fated R101 airships. The R100 was dismantled following its successful flight to 64 In & Around Bedford 2017

Montreal after the R101 destined for India crashed on its maiden flight on 6th October 1930 at Beauvais, France. Of the 54 passengers and crew aboard only six survived. The mass grave and memorial to the victims can be found in the village church cemetery. Cardington was also the home of the 18th century prison reformer John Howard.

spans the Great Ouse and acts as a gateway to this lovely village. Great Barford also boasts the very popular Golden Cross Chinese Restaurant. The Anchor Inn High St, Great Barford MK44 3LF 01234 870364 www.anchorinngreatbarford.co.uk

Clophill

A picturesque village surrounded by beautiful woodlands and delightful walks. It was renowned for its straw plaiting and a factory was in the High Street. The ladies each day would take their plait to the Flying Horse public house, from where a carrier would take it to Luton to be made into hats. There is also evidence of a Roman road running east-west through the village. In the Domesday book of 1086, the village is called Clopelle, which means “tree-stump hill”. You cannot visit Clophill without also seeing the beautiful Wrest Park in Silsoe just a few minutes away. The Flying Horse 2 The Green, Clophill, MK45 4AD www.theflyinghorse.co.uk/

Elstow

The birthplace of John Bunyan, Elstow is a beautiful village with a row of Tudor cottages from the 17th century. The Abbey, the Green and Moot Hall museum are all well worth a visit. Elstow was also well known for lace making, a lace school was held in a cottage on the High Street, and around 1628 an Elstow man started weaving rush mats from rushes gathered from the Elstow brook. The Red Lion, 470 High St, Elstow, Bedford MK42 9XP 01234 359687

Great Barford

Great Barford lock enabled Bedford to once again be open to the sea. Mentioned in the Doomsday book, Great Barford was an important site, probably as a means of crossing the river, the area of the original ford was dug up in 1973 and a bridge has been here since at least the 15th century. Today the bridge, with its 17 arches,

Stevington

Stevington is known for its 200 year old post mill and Kathy Browns wonderful gardens. In the heart of the village is a 14th century cross; it is thought that John Bunyan may have been referring to the cross when he wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress. The Holy Well situated under the churchyard wall has never been known to freeze or dry up.

Harrold

On the village green stands the circular lock-up, a miniature provisional prison. These were used from the late middle ages until the 19th century; the lock-up still retains its original padlock. The Harrold bridge, originally a 13th century pack-horse bridge, has 6 arches spanning the main river with a further twenty covering the flood plain. Harrold is also home to a wonderful country park with the delightful Teazels cafe onsite. The Muntjack 71 High St, Harrold MK43 7BJ 01234 721500 www.themuntjac.co.uk Oakley Arms, 98-104 High St, Harrold, MK43 7BH 01234 721499 www.oakleyarmsharrold.co.uk

Oakley

Formerly an estate village surrounded on three sides by the river Great Ouse – an ideal spot to join the Ouse Valley Way walk. Oakly bridge is of particular interest as it dates from 1852. If you fancy some coffee and cake, O for Coffee is the perfect stop off. There is also a bi-yearly carnival which happens to be this year on Saturday 15th July.

Turvey

Turvey is a beautiful example of limestone dwellings on the border of Buckinghamshire. At All Saints Church – which has been described as ‘one of the finest and oldest churches in the Diocese of St Albans’ – you will find some of the most marvellous surviving alabastar monuments in the country.
