can't believe how quickly the Summer has flown in, although the phrase 'what summer?' springs to mind. Yes, the weather has been dire, however on the bar activity front it has been packed with plenty of new openings across Edinburgh and Glasgow. See our news pages for all the up to date new bars and restaurants, including Jamie's Italian in Edinburgh which is definitely worth a look and The Papermill in Lasswade. The weather certainly didn't stop me getting out and about. You can see all the highlights from my time at this year's festivals on pages 26 and 27. On the drink front we take a look at how rums are faring, check out page 12. This month I also popped down to see Chaophraya in Glasgow, which is the biggest Thai restaurant in Europe. You can see it for yourself in this months Bar Browser on page 18 and 19. After judging “Dog Friendly pub of the Year” for this year's DRAM awards I caught up with Heather Cunningham who owns Hollywoof, which is the only place you should be taking your pooch to get glammed up for the pub. See her interview on pages 14 and 15 . Finally I popped down to The Merchant City in Glasgow following the success of its recent festival. There’s still lots going on there. See pages 22 and 23. I hope you enjoy this issue and if you have any news or events you would like to see included email me at the address below. News Look Hoo’s back

The ‘retro revolution’ seems to be in full swing with indie bands like Blur, tasty treats like Cadbury’s Wispa and clothes brand Converse all re-emerging bigger and better than ever. Now Hooch, one of the original lemon alco-pops that defined the Brit Pop generation has been relaunched. (Remember Two Dogs?) The new take on Hooch Alcoholic Lemon Brew now has real fruit juice with a sharp bite of citrus and a new tagline 'Refreshment with Bite’. Hooch is not the only alco-pop that is making a comeback for the Summer….Reef has also been revived.

Did you know...

Jelly Hill on Glasgow’s Hyndland Road has a new owner who is planning on giving it a revamp over the next few months. It’s already got a new wine list which is going down a storm.

Animal theme strikes again

After commenting in the last issue about the number of bars that are named after animals and the colour black, it was only a matter of days before we heard of yet another venue that is following the same theme. The lovable duo, Colin Church and Martin Luney, who already own Treacle and Hamilton's in Edinburgh are now planning a third venture in the form of ‘The Black Bird’, which they plan to open mid October. The site on Leven Street was formerly The Auld Toll which is now being given a complete makeover and an injection of much needed personality which owners Colin and Martin both have in abundance. We can't wait to see it. Check out www.theblackbirdedinburgh.co.uk 4

Spicing things up

Darnley’s View Gin now has a stablemate in the form of Darnley’s Spiced Gin. Darnley’s View launched back in 2010 when it created a bit of a buzz with bartenders in Scotland. Now that it’s Spicy friend has launched they are hoping to create the same buzz. This new variant includes cinnamon and nutmeg. The company behind the brand are working on festive cocktails in the run up to the party season, so if you fancy something different then keep your eyes peeled when your next out and about in your favourite bar. www.darnleysview.com

Worth the trip

The Paper Mill bar and restaurant has recently opened in Lasswade. The new venue is just a mere 18 minutes from Edinburgh city centre and sits right on the River Esk. But its river bank location has been causing a bit of a drama due to the recent torrential rain, and in fact gained the pub some launch publicity, as the river burst its banks and carried off nearby cars...which floated past the pub, in its opening week! This bar is definitely worth discovering. Rather than being the traditional country pub you would expect, it is stylish, modern and definitely has the wow factor. One of our favourite

features are the revolving doors which are a bit out of the ordinary in a pub. You can go just for a drink or you can eat too. The menu features locally sourced produce and there is something for everyone ranging from monk fish to steak. You don’t even have to drive to get there. The owners have set up a free hourly mini bus service that will ship customers back and forth from Edinburgh town centre, saving you the issue of needing to take the car. However if this rain keeps up it might be a boat trip you're on instead. It’s at Westmill Road, Lasswade EH18 1LX. Tel: 0131 663 1412. www.thepapermilllasswade.co.uk

Glasgow meets Thai Thai restaurant Chaophraya opened in Glasgow last month. This fine dining Thai restaurant is not just the biggest Thai restaurant to land in Glasgow, but the whole of Europe. There are currently Chaophraya restaurants in Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, but Glasgow is the big Budda! The décor is breath taking - marble floors, crystal

chandeliers, gold Budda statues and lots of rich dark wood. There is also a separate floor that hosts the Palm Sugar Lounge which is perfect for after dinner cocktails, or drinks after work. Despite the flamboyant decor the menu is very reasonably priced. Check out their website for full details www.chaopraya.co.uk and check out our bar browser on p14.

Spanish flavour for the old Goat

The Goat and Grill in Finnieston has now reopened as The Que Bo Tapas Bar. Those who used to visit The Goat can expect a complete change, starting with the bright blue colour on the outside which has certainly brightened the place up. The menu is now Spanish inspired with lots of tapas dishes to choose from. For those of you who will miss the grill though, don’t worry as they will still be serving burgers. You can stop by and order food until 9pm. There will still be live music from local bands, and an outside area for when we do get some sunshine. The Que Bo, 1287 Argyle Street, Glasgow.

Around the world buffet for Glasgow

Hot Flame recently landed on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, right next door to Bar Budda, the area that was formerly SlumDog. This new buffet restaurant serves up food from around the world including Chinese, Sushi, Indian, Italian and Mexican. Whew! Although it definitely has student appeal, it is set out like a restaurant with napkin clad tables and polished cutlery, nothing like the neighbouring student haunts. There is a station for each type of cuisine and on most days, for less than a tenner, you can eat until you burst. The night we popped along it was busy but the service was first class, and the standard of food was surprisingly good considering there was such a variety on offer. They are also running live entertainment every Friday night. Hot Flame is at 410 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. Log onto www.hotflamesworldbuff et.co.uk to book.

Jamie does it again...

Following the opening of Jamie Oliver's Glasgow restaurant in 2010, Edinburgh can now boast a Jamie's Italian of its own. The re-opening of George Street’s Assembly Rooms last month also heralded the opening of Jamie’s Italian. The new restaurant has not one, but two entrances, one on George Street and one on Rose Street. This gives you an indication of the sheer size of the place. The venue was formerly a ball

room and in fact still sports the old fashioned pillars and cornicing, which adds to the quirky design. It is very impressive and there are even machines that make and produce pasta right where you sit. This is also the first restaurant in the chain to have an antipasti area where customers can sit on stools and watch the chefs make their meal of choice. The menu is of course Italian inspired but promises to carry the ‘Jamie twist’ in most dishes. It’s at the Assembly Rooms, 54 George Street, Edinburgh.

Pear-fect way to quench thirst for summer

Fans of Strongbow now have a new drink to add to their repertoire Strongbow Pear on draught. The new Strongbow Pear offers a refreshing cider with a distinctive pear aroma that is not as sweet as some of its competitors. It looks set to make a wave in bars and restaurants and you will no doubt see many enjoying it at your favourite spots including Cargo in Edinburgh and Strata, Budda and Vespbar, all in Glasgow.

Pizza time

A new pizza joint will be opening in Glasgow in the form of Panevino shortly. Panevino is owned by the folk behind Little Italy on Byres Road so we are expecting that pizzas to be just as good. Panevino is set to open in September this year, and will be located right next door to the Tesco Express on Argyle Street, Finnieston. Similar to Little Italy, this new joint will also serve alcohol and will be open early from 8am for Italian style breakfast coffees. The advertising for the new venue promises ‘it wil be “A new social experience that is quite simply whatever you want it to be.” Check out www.panevino.co.uk for full details.

Aperol Spritz Mixes it up at the Edinburgh Festival

If you are looking for a bit of European spark, Aperol Spritz, Italy's favourite aperitif is taking over George Street with the opening of the Aperol Garden in the famous Spiegal Tent. The garden will be open during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (until 27th August) to bring a little bit of Italian flair into the heart of Edinburgh. The unique Aperol Spritz taste is fast becoming a firm favourite with our fellow Europeans – (Aperol, topped with tonic and fizz). So if you want to try it for yourself head along to the Aperol Spritz Garden to mix and mingle and to take in some entertainment as the area will also play host to the ‘Aperol Presents…’ performance stage. It is located at the Spiegel Tent. 7

um is usually synonymous with Summer, that could be because rum comes from hot sunny climates such as Jamaica, the Caribbean and Australia, amongst others. Think mint Mojitos, strawberry Daiquiris and Cuba Libres. And despite the dreich Summer we have just had, Mojito's are still one of the biggest selling cocktail in most bars. There’s a massive choice of rums in bars now. In days gone by there would have been a choice of white or dark rum, but now we have golden rum, spiced rum, flavoured rum and over proof rum just to name a few. So how do you know what to order? Well white rums are the lightest in taste as they are not aged after being distilled, which is why they

are clear in colour. Golden rums are aged longer so they are much richer in flavour, and usually take on a darker hue from the wooden casks they are aged in. Spiced rums can look a lot like golden rums and are aged about the

same too. However spices and caramel have been added, to give it a spicy kick. Dark rums are a tad sweeter than any other rum type. And of couse then there are the variety of aged rums to choose from. Phew. So what are the brands that are making a splash in Scotland’s bars? Well Morgan's Spiced re launched as Captain Morgans just last year, while Pusser’s Rum has just won three awards at the International Spirits Challenge, and there has also been the launch of several new brands including Red Leg, which has an image of a crab on the bottle, 19 Spiced which is described as ‘liquid sunshine’ and 66 Rum, a Barbadoes rum which has been aged for 12 years. One of our

Tasting notes PUSSERS RUM Pusser’s Rum (54.5% ABV) is the original rum of the Royal Navy, and was served as a daily tot to sailors for more than 300 years. Rum and the sea are inseparable, and no rum is more akin to the sea and the sailor than Pusser's Rum–the Original Navy Rum. Unlike most rums, Pusser's uses no flavouring agents. It is 100% natural. It is rich and full-bodied, with an unsurpassed smoothness due to its natural ingredients. Served neat or on the rocks, or mixed in a

famous Caribbean inspired recipe–such as the Pusser's Painkiller.

KRAKEN BLACK SPICED RUM The Kraken is an imported Black Rum from the Caribbean blended with spices. Named for a Sea Beast of myth and legend, The Kraken Rum is strong, rich, black and smooth. It is best served over ice or as a component in any number of exotic cocktails. You can't miss the jug handled bottles with the iconic image of the sea beast on the front of the bottle.

Rum ...

favourite is Kraken Spiced, which is so smooth that you can drink it straight over ice. The variety of rums on offer is part of the attraction of rum. Says Graham Swankie who owns Bath Street Pony “customers are definitely becoming more knowledgeable when it comes to knowing their rums, and what they want to order. A while ago they would ask for Bacardi or white rums, whereas now the aged rums like Havana 7 which is one of our biggest sellers, are now taking an upturn.” Some of the best bars to visit for rum cocktails include Ivy, The Finnieston, Tiki Bar and of course Bath Street Pony, all in Glasgow. And for the East, Tonic, and Tiger Lily. One type of bar where rum is a

BACARDI Bacardi is one of the most well known rums, the biggest seller. It is filtered through charcoal to remove impurities, and aged in oak barrels to mellow it. The brand also claims to have been used in birth of some of the world's best known rum cocktails, including the Mojito, Daiquiri and the Cuba Libre. It is just celebrating it 150th year having originated in 1862. It is mixable, light-bodied, clear in colour, smooth in taste and dry in flavour with impressions of vanilla

staple is of course the Tiki bars. There are two in Glasgow. Tiki first originated back in the 1930's in Southern California just when Americans were starting to experience Polynesian food and cultures. In an effort to lend some authenticity to the bars, artifacts from various Pacific islands began to show up, and Tiki statues soon became regular fixtures, and Tiki bars were born. Then bar owners started to invent strong, fruity rum drinks with exotic names like “Mai Tai” which are often served in Tikishaped glasses, even though the drinks themselves had nothing to do with Polynesia. Rum isn’t just good to drink it also works well in in cakes. Entrepreneur Jonathan McCulloch was born in the Caribbean, and

his love of rum and baking saw the creation of Caymanas Rum Cakes, which he has now brought to the UK. They have always been popular in the Caribbean but when Jonathan realised there was none available elsewhere, he hunted down the traditional family recipe then used his own unique blend of Caribbean Rums, to create his own Rum Cake. It took three years for him to master the perfect cake, which he now sells in three sizes, and start at £10. You can order yours online at www.caymanasrumcakes.co.uk. Whatever next? Rum Burgers? If you are still figuring out how best to drink (or eat) your next rum then check out our tasting tips on some of the most popular rums out there.

and subtle aromas of almonds and tropical fruits. Its finish is dry and smooth.

HAVANA CLUB Havana Club rum is a real bartender's favourite. It hails from Cuba and can be drunk neat, with a mixer, or used in one of many cocktails. There's a huge range of Havana Club Rums, featuring both white and golden rums. Havana 7 is one of the more popular which is fullflavoured, rich and sophisticated. In fact it is considered to be one of the best premium aged rums around.

Interview: Heather Cunningham

HOLLYWOOF

With more and more bars becoming dog friendly, there is even more reason to get your dog glammed up for the pub. Most people in their 20's who have dogs will no doubt be keeping their pooch as preened as they are. We took Millie, who is fond of her local pub, The Ben Nevis in Finnieston, to visit Hollywoof a beauty salon for dogs and we caught up with the owner Heather Cunningham who believes all dogs should be treated like stars. So if you have a lovable pooch of your own who is fond of getting preened for the pub the read on to find out what Hollywoof's doggy star treatment involves.

So how did you end up running a dog grooming salon?

the service I already offer.

It all started when I was in High School and went to a vets for my work experience. There was a dog groomer who worked there and I just fell in love with the job. I loved dogs anyway and used to drive my mum mad by bringing home every stray in our area, so this type of job just made sense. I set my mind on getting qualified and saving up to open my own dog grooming salon. However I wanted my salon to have the glam factor and with so many people now getting “handbag” dogs like Paris Hilton and the like, it is becoming more important for dog owners to have their dogs preened to perfection. And why not? If we can go to the salon and get glammed up why can’t our dogs?

You worked on a Cruise ship, how does that work? From Cruise ship to dog groomer?

What do you love most about your job?

We actually sell doggy scent and shampoo so our guests can smell good every time they head out. In the salon we offer all kinds of treatments, and you do sometimes get the odd girly request to paint their nails or dye their hair...The most popular treatment is the full groom which we call the “A” list groom, which includes a bath and shampoo, a clip and style, ear hair removal

I love the fact that it combines everything I love. Animals, working with people, and being my own boss. I love that I can take my two Bedlington Terriors to work, Charlie and Lucy, who are actually father and daughter. I also love that I am constantly learning. In fact I am doing a course on animal behaviour which will only add to 14

Yes well I suppose that is a new one..and I also worked as a trolley dolly for Fly Globespan. You certainly had to be glamorous in those jobs, and I hope I've managed to bring some of that glamour to the salon. I worked on the ships for seven years to save money, but while I was there I got so much life experience and learned all about dealing with different kinds of people. That experience was invaluable, and you certainly come across real characters when running your own business.

So what treatments do you offer to create a glam look for dogs?

and to finish off some powder and scent. (some men could benefit from that package!) I am hoping to get more accessories and toiletries in, as there is a real demand for this. Maybe we will have our own Hollywoof clothing for dogs? Anything is possible.

What is the most popular dogs you get visiting?

Lhasa Apso's are definitely the most popular. Probably because they do need a lot of grooming and they are a real girl's dog. You often see them out and about with wee bows in their hair, and matching jackets. I also offer a FREE puppy pamper package for all pups up to 16 weeks, and I do a lot of Lhasa Apso's for that.

So I take it you went for Hollywoof, for the glam factor of Hollywood?

Yes, and I wanted it to be perfect. It actually took me four months to even decide on the name Hollywoof. I wanted to be known as the salon that offers VIP treatment to all dogs, and I encourage my customers to treat their pets like stars. As soon as you walk in there is a VIP entrance sign which my customers love. All my equipment in the salon is pink, from my massive dog blow dryer to my

clippers. The uniforms are even pink too. You would think, but no I actually wanted my colours to be gold and black but when I was buying equipment and uniforms there wasn't much in those colours. But there was loads of pink. So I thought well rather than boring black, let's get some pink..and my customers love it.

So you like pink then?

What do you like doing in your downtime?

The salon is open 9-5pm Monday and Friday so I take the weekends off to spend with my own dogs. I like to visit different places with them and enjoy walking them on Troon Beach, going to Campbeltown and Skye. In fact I climbed Ben Nevis with Charlie last year. I also love music festivals and socialising in pubs. I can't believe how many bars and hotels let you take your dog in with you now. I stayed at the

Lodge at Loch Lomond which is dog friendly, and will also take them to Leftbank on Gibson Street.

For anyone who wants to own a salon out there, what are the challenges you faced?

After getting the salon looking the part, the main challenge is marketing. It helped that I picked a spot right in the heart of where I grew up, which made me realise location is key when marketing your business. It also helped that my mum runs a burger van business in the area so of course she told EVERYBODY about it. People probably think that all I do is shampoo dogs all day, but it is very hard work and you cannot do this without the correct knowledge and qualifications. I had to learn everything from the different breeds, to hygiene and safety

Words: Lynn Kelly

knowledge, grooming techniques and that was just for starters.

What can customers expect from you when they visit?

I always aim to give a high standard of customer service to everybody. Anyone who knows me will vouch for the fact that I love to talk, in fact my boyfriend tells me I would get so much more done if I talked less to customers. But they love the fact that I will chat away about their dogs breed, give them tips and advise on what grooming they can do at home.

Any future plans in the pipeline?

Yes I never stop planning. I want to expand our gift range so that we could be a one stop shop for everything you need to get for your pet. I may also look at branching out into the Southside, although first I am going to take a holiday which has become a rarity since I opened. I also plan to check out some of the dog friendly pubs I have now found out about...all in the name of research of course. www.hollywoofdoggrooming.com 15

don't believe there is a female on the planet thought so many women would suddenly open up who has not read or at least been intrigued by about their own skeletons in the closet? Merchant City s

L

ast month's Merchant City Festival in Glasgow was one of the most successful so far, with enough activity to last a fortnight never mind four days. Almost every bar and restaurant offered some form of entertainment with everything from street dancers to the legend that is The Big Man Walking. If you missed it, there is always next year but why not pay a visit to the Merchant City and find out what this ‘buzzing’ area of Glasgow has to offer. Here are some of the best spots in the area for eating, drinking and shopping.

22

For shopping...

Merchant Square Craft Fair, Merchant Square G1 1LE The Merchant Square is one of the biggest landmarks in the area. This undercover courtyard has restaurants a plenty and every weekend it turns into a shopper's paradise with a weekly craft fair. Between 11am and 6pm every Saturday and Sunday the entire square is kitted out with tables and stands

selling everything from jewellery and handbags to paintings and crafts. If you have gifts, or crafts of your own that you would like to sell you can get in touch via the website where there is full information on the fair. Check out www.merchantsquareglasgow.com. It makes a great day out allowing you to shop eat and drink all under one roof. That's another good thing, the Square is undercover so you can avoid the rain and as I have already mentioned, is lined with restaurants..one of our favourites is Mercado Espagnol which does delicious tapas. Orro Contemporary Jewellery, 12 Wilson Street G1 1SS This wee find on Wilson Street stocks some of the most beautiful jewellery collections you will find in Glasgow. Everything sold here is handmade by emerging and established designers and almost every item is bespoke. The range includes platinum, gold and diamonds which start from £80. Although it may be a bit pricey almost everything you buy here is unique and of good quality. Perhaps a good place to check out on the run up to

Mr Ben's, Kings Court, 101 King Street, G1 2RB Since opening in the early 1990's Mr Ben's has established a reputation for being the most

well stocked and creative supplier of retro and vintage clothing in the area. They stock clothing and accessories from every era imaginable, and even if you aren't planning on buying anything, it is worth the trip just for the sheer experience of seeing so many vintage designs that will have you reliving the 50's, 60's and 70's in a second. They also sell a lot of antiques and jewellery too, which are always in good condition. Plus there is a a lot of vintage jeans, dresses, hats and bags..and that's just for starters. You really could spend hours here. For food... Grill Room at The Square, Royal Exchange Square G1 3AJ If you are looking for five star service, luxury surroundings and some of the tastiest meals to come out of Glasgow, then The Grill Room at the Square which is part of private members club 29 is the place for you. Most people will have heard of their sister venue One Up, which is

also renowned for great service. 29 is a private members club but you can dine at The Grill Room on The Square as a non member too. Situated in Royal Exchange Square they are just a stones throw away from Ingram Street, and the restaurant overlooks a fantastic view of the square. Food from award winning chef David Friel is served from as early as 9am Mon to Fri, when you can stop off for some breakfast. Dinner is served until 10pm most evenings. They are running an offer for £15.95 which includes two courses for two people and a glass of wine, an absolute steal. It is jam packed here on the entertainment front too, with a tribute Michael Buble nights planned for the 31st August and 28th September. For all menus and info on these events log onto www.grillroomglasgow.com Cafe Source, 1 St Andrews Square, (off Saltmarket), Glasgow, G1 5PP Cafe Source is a real hidden gem situated in the basement of the magnificently restored St. Andrew's in the Square. celebrates all things Scottish and, as its name suggests, all ingredients are sourced locally and are of the highest quality. A delicious and wide ranging menu offers traditional favourites such as Cullen Skink, Haggis and Stovies sitting alongside more modern delights such as the Slow Braised Ox Cheek or the Trio of Pork and all finished off with mouth watering home-made desserts. Qua, 68 Ingram Street Glasgow, G1 1EX 0141 552 6233 This family run Italian restaurant has a great buzz about it and you get a real sense of welcome whenever you visit. Expect friendly staff, bright colours and delicious authentic Italian food. Even Tam Cowan gave it a glowing review boasting that it has “great fresh produce.” Dinertec and The Evening Times have also given it top marks, saying the food was 23

“mouth watering.” Make sure you go on an empty stomach as the portions are generous, and you can't go without trying at least two courses, the food is that good. It is also reasonably priced too, with a two course lunch sitting at only £5.95 and a three course pre-theatre, will only set you back £10.95. The restaurant will happily welcome large parties, and you can even request special set menus if you a planning a private function. Check out www.quarestaurant.co.uk.

For entertainment...

Maggie Mays 60 The Trongate, Glasgow G1 5EP Maggie Mays is one of the most well known live music venues in Scotland, never mind Glasgow. For the last seven years they have been rocking up the music front with both signed and unsigned bands, which has seen more than a few celebrities popping down for a pint and a jam. They are renowned for the variety of club nights they have on offer which includes live bands, comedy, and DJ's playing the best of electro Rock n Roll. In fact they have just won ‘Captain Morgan’s Spiced Best Late night Venue’ at the DRAM awards this year. However it is not just entertainment that they do well they also serve up tasty meals that are great value for money. You can get two courses for lunch for just £6.95 and 2 courses off the market menu at 24

night for £12.95. They also run a offer that tickled my fancy when I first saw it. They call it ‘Stairway to Heaven’ which gets you 3 courses, entry to the club and a private booth for £18.95. From the menu you can expect a variety of meals from a mean fish and chips, to smoked salmon wrapped in parma ham. The burgers here are not to be scoffed at either, with a choice of 17 in total, including The Texan burger which has beef chilli, and mozzarella, The Cowboy which comes with BBQ sauce and onion rings, and our favourite... The Greedy B which will set you back £11.95 and has pretty much two of everything on it. For more information check out www.maggiemays.info

13th Note 50-60 King Street, G1 5QT This trendy wee cafe is another hidden gem off the beaten track. You will find it on King Street not far from the famous Mr Ben's vintage shop. This cafe bar and restaurant hosts a variety of entertainment from comedy, theatre and arts to live music which sees bands on from 8pm Wed – Sat. Not only can you watch entertainment here, you can also host it. The cafe has an

exhibition space which can be hired for free for artists to use whether you want to run a comedy night, or something more creative. As long as it's legal the owners will let you hire it. They also hire out the window space for artists to exhibit their work. This adds to the décor, and you will be amazed at some of the work that is shown. Vegans will love it here, as everything is vegetarian friendly...and it doesn't just stop at the food..they sell vegan beer and wine too. This place definitely has the chill out factor, but it comes to life on Friday and Saturday nights when there is live DJ sets til midnight. Open 7 days a week from midday til midnight you can stop by for a bite to eat and take advantage of the current offers. Including 2 for 1 on selected meals, or £5 for a Budvar and a burger (vegetarian we're presuming?) and there is also a deal running just now for 3 tapas for a tenner. log onto www.13note.co.uk

Blackfriars, 36 Bell Street, G1 1LG From the outside you could be forgiven for thinking this is an old man’s pub, with aging decor and the aroma of real ale. However what most people don’t realise is that this is a great spot for free live music, and downstairs in the basement some of the best versatile club nights take place. One of the best is ‘Shout Bamalama’ which takes place on a Saturday and plays tribute to 50's and 60's dancefloor sounds including rhythm and blues, rock'n'roll and vintage soul. The charge for club entry is £5 and stays the same for all nights. They host live music every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday night from 9pm from a range of indie, rock and blues bands. The basement is also available for private hire functions and club nights, log onto www.blackfriarsglasgow.com for a full list of club nights.

Voxpop: Festivals e certainly do get spoiled here in Scotland when it comes to festivals, and it’s not just music festivals that we do well. We also have The Merchant City Festival which went down a storm this year and The West End festival throughout June which to be honest was a bit of a non event this year. We also still have the full month of August to look forward with the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. The weather of course, can be an issue. But despite the torrential rain in the run up to T In The Park, dedicated festival goers still trudged on bearing wellies and waterproofs to enjoy a line up of top acts including The Stone Roses, Snow Patrol and Swedish House Mafia. Whereas those who stopped off at The Wickerman landed lucky with the weather which stayed warm and dry all weekend. It seems though that if you love a festival you will make the most of it no matter how bad the weather is. We are in Scotland after all. Check out what some of the folk who went had to say about their festival highlights. See if you can spot yourself.

Repertoire’s Top Picks for late night eating Words: Lynn Kelly

You know the feeling when you have been out for a few drinks after work, it's well after 9pm and your stomach is starting to grumble? But just because it's getting late, it shouldn't mean that you need to settle for greasy burger joints, or re heated pizza. So Repertoire went on the hunt for some late night food joints that still offer a restaurant experience right into the wee hours. Here are some of the best we found.

Spice Garden, 15-17 Clyde Place, Glasgow This haunt is open until 3.30am! It does sit a wee bit further out of the City Centre, but a short walk over the bridge down to Clyde Street will be sure work up an appetite. The restaurant opens from 6pm and serves food from around the globe, including Steak, Chicken Kiev, Pizza, Curry and Tandoori. What we love about this place is the fact that no matter what time you walk in here at, the place looks clean and the service is first class. Plus there is an open kitchen so you can sit and watch them russle up your late night feast. It offers a set meal for only £9.95 (after midnight only), that includes a starter, an even bigger starter and then a main course. It is also popular with the big man Tam Cowan who gave it 22/25 for his “Hot Plate” award in the Daily Record. So next time you are hank marvin get yourself along to Spice Garden. www.spicegarden.com

Ubiquitous Chip,12 Ashton Lane, Glasgow This hotspot which is fondly called “The Chip” by most Glaswegians, has been open since the 1970's and is now a Glasgow Icon. We love it because it is one of the few restaurants in the West End that will serve food until late in the bar. Even if you drop in after 11pm they will still russle you up a platter, or a cheeseboard. When we last popped in we were treated to the most delicious stovies and chips, which only cost about £7.95 and set us up for the walk home. No matter how late you go you can eat in the courtyard dining room, or even the mezzanine. Expect friendly faces, and the best of Scottish produce. Our favourites include the mussels, smoked haddie, and the haggis neeps and tatties, yum! So next time you're in the West End keep this spot in mind for your late night dinner. Check out www.ubiquitouschip.co.uk

La Tasca, 39-42 Renfield Street, Glasgow La Tasca on Renfield Street is one of the most well known tapas joints in Glasgow, and lucky for us they open until 11pm, and will take bookings right up until they close. The handy location is always buzzing and no wonder as they always have a great offer to entice you in. The latest is 3 for 2 on all tapas for the month of August. Plus they are running a Fiesta night every Thursday. So if you are hungry late at night but don't want to stop the party then you can pop in here, spend a fiver and you can share Sangria and paella with your pals. What we love about this place is not just the food, but the vibrant atmosphere that gives you a real pick you up from the second you enter. They also run salsa lesson and DJ nights, so chances are if you do pop in for a bite to eat, you will also be privy to some entertainment too. Kampong ah lee, 28 Clerk Street,Edinburgh EH8 9HX

This Malaysian restaurant sits in the busy hub that is Clerk Street. It is popular with the locals and has a massive selection of Authentic Malaysian food on offer. Open seven days a week right until 11pm, you can stop by any time at night and they will find you a table. It offers first class food in an informal relaxed atmosphere. The décor is unpretentious with very basic seating and lots of tourist posters and maps on the walls. Plus if you feel out of your depth with the Malaysian menu, the staff will soon put you at ease and recommend dishes. You cannot go here without trying the delicious flat breads, or the spicy noodles. The laksa soup bowl is another cracker and is definitely worth the price tag of £6.30. It's a meal in itself containing prawns, squid, chicken and rice noodles. Tasty stuff. So make sure the next time you're in the Old Town you check this out. www.kampongahlee.co.uk

Miso Sushi, 46a Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh EH12 5LA

This Japanese restaurant offers some of the best sushi the city has to offer and it is located in a very handy spot right next to Haymarket Station. It is open until 11pm, so you can grab bite to eat then catch the last train home. We love this place because although the interior is needing a bit of TLC, the food is impressive. They have both a Japanese and a Chinese menu which features all the classics and a few creative dishes of their own. We ordered the Dragon Roll which is presented on a massive platter and looks not unlike our own Scottish monster, Nessie. For those of you who are not quite brave enough to try raw fish yet, then there is a Chinese menu that is equally as tasty. So next time you are in the area, give yourself an extra half hour to pop in and try some sushi delights. Check out www.sushi-edinburgh.com

Illegal Jack's Grill, 113-117 Lothian Road, Edinburgh

Be warned this grill house is not for beginners. The portions are huge and the food is so delicious is should be illegal. It is a real celebration of South West American food, although they do have haggis on the menu to add a bit of a Scottish twist. You can also create your own individual monster dish, which is made right in front of you. First you are invited to choose your weapon – burrito, tacos or a quesidilla. Then pick a choice of filling from beef, steak, chicken or haggis. Add beans then salsa, and you're good to go. So if you have been out on the lash and you need to seriously soak up some booze, this is where you should be heading. And don't worry if you wimp out and can't finish your plateful, as they will give you a doggy bag to take home. It is open seven days until 11pm. Are you up for the Illegal Jack challenge? It's all in the service

Lynn’s Corner

Since my last issue I popped into Stravaigin on Gibson Street with the whole family, and I'm pleased to say the slow service I received previously was, as I suspected just a blip. This time round the service was top notch thankfully, despite the place being busy with graduations. It still sits as one of my favourite restaurants, and just goes to show that good or bad service really does effect your whole experience no matter how good the food is.

one of the best live music venues I have discovered in Edinburgh for a while. He treated us to a night of dinner and Jazz with none other than Curtis Stieger, who was the special guest that week. We had the best seats in the house, front centre stage. You can see from the picture how close we were...and no we didn't reach out and touch him, as everyone keeps asking me. But we did enjoy a fantastic set of his famous classics, and I made another discovery....Chocolate Box red wine. Billy Lowe recommended it, and both myself and Curtis were drinking it during his set. It is absolutely delicious, so make sure you order it next time you visit Le Monde in Edinburgh. I also hear that you can get in the Finnieston, Chinaskis and Hotel Indigo all in Glasgow.

A diamond in the rough...

My brother, like me is also musical and plays in a big band every fortnight at Pivo Pivo. However it was a complete surprise to find out it was none other than the famous Harry Margolis and his big band that he was part of. I nipped down one Saturday afternoon and was in complete awe of Harry at 96 years of age, who is still able to strut and sing along with the band. He is famous worldwide and still attracts a large crowd wherever he goes. Every Saturday, old time jivers and crooners come in their droves dressed in their finery for an afternoon of swing, drinks and dancing. It is really a sight to see, and made me wish I was part of that era first time round. So if jazz is your thing and you want to be whisked back to the 1950's for an afternoon then get yourself along to Pivo Pivo on Waterloo Street every Saturday from 2pm.

Dirty Martini is a hit

The lovely Billy Lowe who owns Le Monde, invited us along to his newest venture, Dirty Martini which sits just upstairs and is definitely

In The Buff

The Buff Club on Bath Street is my new place of choice...on the rare occasion that I will visit a club. Maybe I'm biased because of my love of the Jazz era but you can't really beat a night of old soul and funk classics that gets everyone dancing. I also love rum and they have this on promotion too at only £2 for a rum and coke, perfect. The staff are also the friendliest bunch that I have came across in the clubbing world, from the door stewards to the cloakroom staff. We arrived after my band were gigging in Box and they had no issue allowing us in with our equipment and safely stored it away for us until we were ready to leave. A big thumbs up for that. I don't think I have ever witnessed couples jive in a nightclub but you will see it here. Anyone who knows me well, can vouch for the fact that I am usually the last person to leave the dance floor so it goes without saying that my feet were just a tad sore the next day...a sure sign of a good night.
