Club 27 inspires Dead Famous Clothing A new diverse clothing range caught my attention recently, which may well be a big hit, especially with music lovers. Glasgow based music promoter Craig Reid is the brainchild behind his latest “Dead Famous” clothing range that incorporates iconic images of famous, dead music artists who are all renowned for fallen curse to Club 27. For those that aren’t familiar with the term, Club 27 is used to describe the uncanny amount of prominent music artists who have all passed away at age 27. The idea was inspired following the news of Amy Winehouse’s death. Says Craig “I've always been 4

fascinated by all the great musicians in Club 27 and decided it would be a great idea to incorporate this into fashion and design.” The range consists of different style tee shirts, and are available online for just £20! log on to www.famousdeadclothing.co.uk to view all designs.

Brace yourself! Bartenders who need to keep their shirts in control can now brace up with “shirt companions”. These clever braces connect your shirt tails to your socks, and have been getting snatched up by bartenders who want to stop their shirt riding up when stretching high for bottles and glassware. Ervin at The Finnieston in Glasgow raves about his! Order your own from www.firefox.com for only £14.99! Just make sure those sock clips stay secure!

Pub Awards

Seafood treat at Table 11 Table 11 has finally opened two doors down from sister restaurant, The Crabshakk, in Finnieston's Argyle Street. Fish lovers will no doubt have heard about the award winning Crabshakk which has been a success since the day it opened. Table 11 is more intimate, if that's possible, and caters for private parties, as well as people looking for a great glass of wine. It's open from 5pm onwards and if you are looking for a small intimate bar this definitely fits the bill.

Next month our sister magazine, DRAM, hosts its annual Scottish Licensed Trade awards at The Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. It's the 17th year of the awards, and this year for the first time there was a 'Dog Friendly Pub' category, which got loads of entries. Other categories include Captain Morgan's Best Late night venue – which took our judges to Edinburgh and back, and The Kraken Cocktail Bar of the year. The Sunday Mail is also backing the awards with Sunday Mail Pub of the year. Look out for more information on the winners online at dramscotland.co.uk after July 2nd. Meanwhile September will be a big month for pubs with Scotland's first Pub Month. Look out for details in the Daily Record and Sunday Mail and local newspapers. There ought to be lots going on.

New Bistro celebrates all things Scottish! The Edinburgh Larder has now opened a second venue on Alva Street in the West End of Edinburgh. This follows the opening of their first deli/cafe which opened in 2009 and sits at the top of Blackfriars Street. The new venue is more bistro led and just like their sister venue, it will offer all things Scottish! Here you can expect a flavoursome Scottish menu that consists of locally sourced, free range, fresh ingredients. On the drink front they sell botanical drinks produced in Scotland, including Hendricks Gin, Pincer Vodka, a range of Scotch malt whisky and Scottish brewed beers. This new bistro provides the perfect setting whether you are meeting for a business lunch, a relaxed evening meal or after work drinks. The Bistro is open from Monday to Saturday, from 12noon to 10pm, and is also available for private hire. For full information visit the website www.edinburghlarder.co.uk. 5

Glenrothes reveal vintagemaker winners If you have ever fancied working at a distillery you ought to have entered The Glenrothes Vintage Makers competition. The International competition which attracted entries from the USA, the UK and the rest of the world, saw four lucky winners from the UK. They came up with a moment which the judges thought represented the perfect combination of time, place, people and/or occasion. News Apple twist for Mickey Finn

Look out for a new Irish-American whisky blend called Mickey Finn, which is infused with the juice of real apples. The Irish-based company behind the brand is tapping into the flavoured spirits market, and the newly launched Mickey Finn suggests serving it on the rocks or with lemonade. Mickey Finn could also suit anyone who is discovering whisky for the first time, as it's low in strength and quite a sweet, light taste. To celebrate the launch, just in time for the Euro 2012 tournament, there will be a limited number of Mickey Finn signed golden boots that can be won via the website www.mickeyfinnwhiskey.com.

A Swedish twist for Edinburgh Newly opened cafe/bar Hemma on Holyrood Road is named after the Swedish term to feel at home, or “hame” for us Scots. The Swedish take on things runs right through into the decor of the bar, the food offerings and the range of ciders and lager on draught. During the day Hemma is more like a chilled out cafe where you can order open sandwiches and salads and some traditional Swedish inspired dishes including smoked trout. At night there are live DJs and as the bar spirals over two floors there is plenty of space for larger groups, and they also hire out the top floor for private parties and events. Contact hemma@bodabar.com to make a booking!

New Hangout for beer lovers The Southern has recently opened on South Clerk Street, situated just further outside the city centre and has the biggest range of beers on offer in this area. Following a refurb the bar now has lots of modern seating and a fresh new look. The burgers being sent out from the kitchen looked and smelt delicious, and were served on boards instead of plates. They have changing beer casks here too just to keep you on your toes, but there is always a menu beside the bar to keep you up to date with what’s on offer, you certainly won’t struggle for choice!

All change for Booly's Most people who visit or live in the West End will have been into the famous Booly Mardys at some point. But since being bought over recently by young bar whiz Mark Tracey there have been some interesting changes that you may not know about it. For starters they have changed the food menu, lighter bites including chicken goujons and finger snacks. They have also spruced up the outside area, and plan to

expand on this for the Summer months. Mark is clearly a fan of themed event nights having already hosted a Mad Men cocktail night which was inspired by 1960's New York Madison Avenue. The next event will be a Miami Vice night at the end of June, sponsored by Havanna Club. Guests are invited to dress up and join this 80's style party. You can follow all news and details of this event at www.bloodymarys.co.uk.

New bar for Fountainbridge

A pub that was formerly an old man’s boozer has been transformed and reopened at The Fountain, in Fountainbridge Edinburgh. This new bar is a trendy hang out spot that is becoming very popular for their food menu and chilled out vibe. Real ale is also in demand here as well as a selection of draught lagers including St Mungo and Blue Moon which is apparently flying out the door! On the food front you can expect to see a Scottish led menu with dishes like fish pie, shin of beef and of course fish and chips! There is also a selection of different daily specials, and a lunch deal that comes in at £8 for two courses, and £11 for three. The bar is open from 9am for breakfast til midnight on week nights, and 1am at the weekends. You can see full details online at www.theshillinggroup.co.uk along with info on all the other pub groups for this company.

Buzz in Bath Street A new bar and restaurant has arrived on Bath street in the form of San Romano. Formerly Sanninos, this new modern haunt has an authentic Italian twist and menu to boot. If you are dining then food is served until 10pm, and you can expect pizza and pasta dishes from £7.95. CIDER FROM ÖSTERLEN

f you asked any of my friends what ciders they were drinking five years ago, they would definitely have named a cider brand that came in the form of a litre bottle, or they would have preferred a Bacardi Breezer or a blue WKD. Nowadays, though you could argue that cider has taken the place of these ready to drink brands, as it's now a fashionable choice and popular in clubs and style bars, not just in beer gardens. So why the growing interest in Cider? Well for one, brands like Kopparberg and Bulmers are coming up with innovative marketing campaigns and TV adverts that are definitely catching people's attention, and enticing their taste buds. Plus the versatility of cider has come along way, with more brands than ever before adding flavour variants to their portfolio. I remember trying Kopparberg Pear cider in the Observatory in Glasgow when it first launched, and since then they have added Strawberry and Lime, Apple, Mixed Fruit, Elder flower and Lime, and their most recent addition, Naked Apple. A new brand that only launched last year called Briska is also following the flavour trend, offering three variants, Apple, Pear and Pomegranate. Fraser McIlwraith is operations bar manager for bars like Scotts in Largs, Lido in Troon and Elliots in Prestwick. He said, “What a difference to a few years ago. The market has

I

new Swedish cider which you will find in bars like Edinburgh's Bond No.9, The Outhouse and Drop Bar in Glasgow and also at their “Garden of Sweden” bar at this year's Edinburgh festival in August. Draught cider leader, Strongbow has also announced some exciting news with the launch of Strongbow Pear, which will be available on draught from July 2012. The pear variant has a distinctive aroma, which is low in sweetness and easy to drink. Look out for the distinctive bar font and glassware that will be landing in your favourite bars. Pear really does seem to be the flavour of the moment as Stella Artois Cidre are also launching a bottled pear variant this Summer as well as Gaymers who have launched two new flavours, Gaymers Pear with Raspberry and Gaymers Pear with Cherry and Apple. Mentioned earlier was Naked Apple, the new variant from Kopparberg which is devoid of all other fruits (except apple) and promises to appeal to those looking for a clean crisp taste. You may have spotted Kopparberg's new ‘ün-established since 1882 advert on TV and billboards. As part of this campaign, the brand has also pioneered a ground breaking partnership with Spotify and Last.fm that sees these two music platforms working together with a brand for the very first time. You can deny that it’s certainly all go on the cider scene.

What’s your flavour? been blown wide open by all of the new brand and flavour choices out there. The biggest difference is that more women and younger people are ordering it at the bar.” Stephen McLaren, assistant manager at The Pear Tree in Edinburgh, has also noticed a big swing towards cider, both bottled and draught. He told Repertoire “Kopparberg Pear cider is popular in here, simply because it tastes great. What the flavours have done for the category has made it less of a summer drink as it’s creeping into our customer’s repertoires over the winter months too. The more traditional ciders are also picking up with a younger generation of drinkers – especially Bulmers.” So what brands should you be looking out for? Well, Bulmers fans will be pleased to learn that there is a new variant called Bulmers Vintage which is now available in Scotland. You should also keep your eyes peeled for Briska, the

irls out there who aren't shy of a festival or two will appreciate just how uncomfortable using portaloos can be, and even worse, having to queue when you really, really need to go! I have been there and let me tell you it is not pleasant, and although I have seen many intoxicated girls lift their drawers and have a pee in the middle of the field (usually while their equally drunk friend tries to hide their dignity with a scarf) I will never have a pee in the open air, no matter how much I need to go! The difficulty of being able to use the ladies room at a festival spurred on the creation of the Words: Lynn Kelly Shewee. Described as every girl's best friend for the festival months, the Shewee is portable, disposable and although it can be slightly undignified to use, it beats having to stand in long queues just to be greeted by the sight and smell of the inside of a portaloo, which sometimes no amount of baby wipes will help. My first experience with a Shewee or “pee mateas they are sometimes called was somewhat surreal, and an almost liberating experience I will never forget. I was tactfully spotted by a pee mate sales girl who must have spotted my struggle whilst half dancing, half grimacing in a bid not to wee my pants while standing in the longest queue in portaloo history. She pounced on me, pee mate at the ready and led me behind the portaloos to what looked like a hidden hut. I'm thinking where is she taking me? But I was so desperate to wee I just didn't care, and if there was a loo in this hut then just get me in there, with whatever this pee mate contraption was that I had just spent my last fiver on. I finally get into the hut, and at first my concentration on not weeing my pants in front of my newly found pee mate friends stopped me from noticing that there was not a toilet in sight, but instead plenty of urinals. The sight of about thirty girls all standing up taking a pee into a urinal with a perfect aim will never leave me! Some of these girls were clearly pros, whereas me, a pee mate virgin, had absolutely no idea

G

how the thing worked or how to get it out the packet. I know girls tend to bond in the toilet, but having a complete stranger show me how to adjust my shorts and pee down this funnel, whilst aiming into a urinal was one of the most bizarre experiences I have ever shared in the girls loos. I was so desperate for the loo now I was past caring, and if everyone else was doing it then what was the harm? My new pee mate friend actually clapped with excitement (clearly she'd had a few ciders)...and spurred me on whilst it felt like I had the longest pee in history in front of my over excited audience. I was just a tad mortified that I was peeing in front of a sea of strangers, faces, but the relief was incredible, and once you get over the idea of peeing standing up you think this is not so bad! No smelly portaloo, no trying to balance half pissed while hovering over a disgusting toilet seat, and best of all no queues! My new pee mate friend then hugged out my first urinal experience before going back to join the festival, leaving me feeling part violated, part exhilarated! Thinking I could get used to this pee mate experience I head back to my friends to tell them about my exciting news and new talent for vertical urinating. However, I was not alone in my excitement, as my friends has clearly discovered the pee mate too. They had been led to another secret hut, clearly this pee mate experience was more common knowledge than we realised, but that didn't stop us telling every girl we met about it. I tell you one thing, It makes you jealous of all males who don't appreciate the convenience of being able to jump into the fenced off urinal areas without so much as a thought. So, if like me you are heading to a festival this year then look out for the pee mate huts, and avoid the portaloos from hell. I would strongly recommend that if it's your first time don't wear shorts like I did, and I would definitely not recommend trying it sober! You need some dutch courage for your first Shewee girls! So get your pee mates at the ready, happy peeing!

Girls get your shewee on!

Interview: Gemma Leisegang

BEST FOR THE WEST Repertoire caught up with the lovely Gemma Leisegang who has a job most guys would give their right arm for selling beer! Gemma always has a smile for everyone and a sunny nature whereever she goes. Of course it does help that she loves her job working as Sales Manager for WEST Brewery here in Glasgow. If you have ever wondered what working for a drinks company really involves then read on to find out more. It's certainly not as easy as most people assume! Did you ever think you would end up selling beer for a living? No way, not a chance. I actually always wanted to be a news reader, would you believe? I loved the idea of being on the television or doing any kind of presenting. I studied drama and dance so it stems from that, and is probably why I love going out to speak to people to tell them all about my products at WEST...the performance side of me is still there. So how did you get into working for a drinks company? I actually did a business degree at Strathclyde University, but I later realised that the jobs available at the other side of University were more about pencil pushing and less about out meeting people, which just isn't me. I went to Michael Page recruitment where an opportunity came up for a sales role at Waverley Tbs. I’m glad I took the job as I had an 16

amazing experience working there for the next five years before moving to WEST Brewery. So what is your working day like on a regular basis? My Job is to look after the sales side of the business at WEST Brewery. I look at ways to develop our product sales both in house and out. I am responsible for all our key customers so I arrange regular meetings with the bar owners and make sure they are getting a great service. It is also my job to set up new accounts and have our products in as many bars as possible, so I have to keep my eyes peeled for new bar openings and opportunities. Most people will probably know our flagship brand St Mungos, but we have just launched our new lager called WEST 4, which is the only 4% premium lager in Scotland. What do you love most about your job, and do you have a

Words: Lynn Kelly formula to do well? What's lovely is being able to grow up with my customers and to share experiences with them. I had my wee boy Nathan 4 years ago, and I can talk to customers about my family and their kids too. The people I deal with have developed too – for instance I might have dealt with them when they were bartenders and now they own three or four pubs! Having a good relationship with your customer is so important! My winning formula is to value loyalty and integrity, as honesty will get you far. I think it's also important to have a sense of fun, and remember who are. Never let a company change you.

Repertoire 83_v2.qxp.qxl_Layout 1 13/06/2012 15:36 Page 17

What made you move to WEST Brewery? I already knew the owner Petra, and she offered me a job just as she was expanding, and it was time for a new challenge for me. I love the sense of family we have at West. I also love having the freedom to drive the business in the direction I think it should go. It is mainly female staff which I'm sure will surprise a lot of people that a team of females are heading up beer! Who is your Inspiration? Definitely my big sister Alison! She has always been quite pivotal in everything I do. She is definitely my mentor and it

does help that she is the Area Sales Manager for BrownForman. If I ever need advice I will go to Alison. In fact I have a lot of strong women around me in my family and of course Petra at West. I also socialise with Alison and anyone who knows us can vouch that we enjoy a good knees up! What do you like doing in your downtime? I love going out to let my hair down. My favourite bars are The Finnieston, Chinaskis, DRAM, and the Drake. I also enjoy days out with the family, going to the gym and I enjoy cooking when I get the time. I also love travelling to Miami which I call my “spirtual home

and where I discovered the Patron cafe with my sister Alison. My husband is from South Africa so we also like to have family holidays there as often as we can. Any future plans in the pipeline? I actually feel quite settled, I'm really happy at WEST Brewery, I love my wee family at home and feel content with my lot at the moment! I know now I will always be in a brand/sales role, and just want to keep growing with West Brewery. If anything I quite like the idea of joining a licensing board committee or doing something additional to my role to support the trade. 17

Up the You may shop, eat and drink in the West End, but how well do you know your lanes? Do you realise just how many different businesses are lurking up Creswell and Ruthven Lane and the lesser known Hidden Lane in Finnieston? Most of these quirky shops and cafes are owned by young men and women who have taken their passion in life and turned it into a successful business. Here at Repertoire we went on our own lane adventure and sought out some of the best hidden gems for you to visit during this year's West End Festival.

Stravaigin 2 8 Ruthven Lane Glasgow G12 9BG T: 0141 334 7165 www.stravaigin2.com Tucked up in Ruthven Lane, Stravaigin 2 has always been a hub for the local community. The menu is imaginative and never disappoints. The staff are always friendly and will remember their guests favourite dish or tipple of choice when they visit. Stravaigin’s sister restaurant has become renowned within Ruthven Lane as the hotspot place to dine away from the busy hubbub of Byres Road. As you wander up the lane you could be anywhere but Glasgow, and in the Summer months the setting is almost like wandering up a lane in Greece or Spain towards a hidden taverna. July’s Rijsttafel menu can be found online at www.stravaigin2.com. 21

usic lovers will no doubt be counting the days until there next festival trip over the Summer months...With this in mind we decided to pop down to one of our favourite bars, Bunker in Bath Street and get chatting to you all about your favourite bands and festival plans. Smirnoff Ice was our tipple of choice and you can see it was enjoyed by all whilst we chatted about the music that makes you tick and what festivals are on your agenda. Smirnoff Ice has been around for a while, but we often forget just how refreshing this drink is and here at Repertoire we think this makes a good alternative choice to cider and beer for the festival months.

Bartenders’ Cho ce

For this issue we asked some bartenders to rustle up their idea of the perfect Summer drink. This is what they suggest you should be trying out over the Summer months.

Richard O'Donnell – Strata Vanilla and Pineapple Mojito

“This is a sweeter twist on the classic Mojito and made with Havana Club Especial rum and vanilla schnapps. A great fresh Summer drink!” Alec Dyson - Booly Mardy's Paloma

“My Summer creation is the Paloma. It contains tequila, pink grapefruit, lime and agave nectar. This is a long, refreshing fantastic Summer drink.” Christopher Murray – Ubiquitous Chip Mixologist Bartender’s Root Beer

“Made with Kahlua, Licor 43, lime and cola; Bartender’s Root Beer is the perfect long serve for Summer nights.” 27

Last issue we gave you some of our top picks for Glasgow and I hope you managed to check some of them out. I know a few people have been into Neighbourhood after reading about the burgers, and one reader

got in touch saying they had a great night in the Berkeley Suite. This month we headed to Edinburgh, and came across some real gems. Here are some of the best we found‌

Repertoire s Top Picks in Town Words: Lynn Kelly

Musical Fingers If you love live music then you must make a point of visiting Fingers piano bar at 61a Frederick Street. You can hear the music bursting out the front door before you even step downstairs. What we loved most about this bar is the energy and the feeling that you are being whizzed back to the rat pack era. They even sell trilby hats in here, so you can get right into the swing of things. Usually you will find a Frank Sinatra style singer serenading customers and taking requests. The night we popped in, the place was mobbed and everyone was singing along to Mack the Knife and New York New York. It was just fantastic. This bar definitely has the feel good factor. Another new bar that is becoming renowned for live music and a great atmosphere is Dirty Martini in George Street, above Le Monde.

Anyone for Steak? Newly opened Steak at Picardy Place is proving very popular. After hearing so many friends raving about their experience in Steak we decided to give it a try, and we were not disappointed. What we loved most about this restaurant is how relaxed you feel and how friendly the trendy staff are. We particularly love the uniforms - black aprons and converse trainers. The food was top notch, and you get to see the cuts of steak on offer before selecting your choice. One of the favourites at our table was the Sirloin, which came with tasty chips and a blue cheese sauce. Later on at night a DJ jumps on the decks and sets a more club vibe, which worked really well. By the time we left the restaurant, we were set up for a big night out! Check out www.steakedinburgh.com.

Best for Beer There are so many good places to drink beer in Edinburgh, that it could fill the whole magazine. But if I was to single out one for attention that I think would appeal to Repertoire readers it would be Holyrood 9A. It's a slightly modern take on a traditional beer pub, and they have lots of beers available to sample. Look out for its beer festival...it should not be too far away. 28

Repertoire 83_v2.qxp.qxl_Layout 1 13/06/2012 15:53 Page 29

Thirsty for cocktails? We have always been a fan of Treacle, Broughton Street, and the loveable owners who add a cheeky twist to everything they do there. What we love most is the delicious cocktails that any of the bartenders will happily customise to suit your favourite tipple. I generally opt for a rum cocktail and I can honestly say I have never ordered off the menu here instead I trust the staff to do their magic...and they always hit the spot. Last time I popped in for lunch we enjoyed a pre-made fruity rum cocktail, stored chilling in a jar. It was very tasty, and ideal for sharing. Best to Impress You can't visit Edinburgh without popping in to see Tiger Lily on George Street. Whether you are planning a business meeting, lunch with friends, a romantic over night stay or cocktails until late, Tiger Lily ticks all the right boxes. It oozes style and sophistication and will impress anyone visiting the city or those looking for that five star treatment. What we love most about this place is the impeccable service and expertise, from every member of staff. We often get people raving about the experience they have had there too! The surroundings are lush, with a boutique cocktail bar, fine dining restaurant and of course the luxurious bedrooms in the hotel. The hotel is currently running a Summer offer until the end of July which includes overnight stay, two course meal, entry into Lulu club downstairs and breakfast for only £165. Log onto www.tigerlilyedinburgh.co.uk to book.

Anyone for a Dram? Whether you are a lover of whisky or just curious to experiment with different Malts, there are plenty of bars in Edinburgh that have a wide range of whiskies and knowledgeable bartenders to boot. A real wee gem of a bar that has over 68 Malts to compliment a delicious food menu is The Queens Arms on Frederick Street. We discovered this bar not long after it opened, and ever since it has never failed to impress. Manager Alec has a real passion for whisky and his staff will happily take time to recommend the Malt of the moment and give any information on the brands they stock. We love the enthusiasm here for whisky so much that we even host our Make a Date with Whisky festival in the bar every other month. This is a free event for anyone who would like to learn about whisky. For more information email lynn@mediaworldltd.com. If you are a real connoissuer of whisky you should also visit the Whisky Experience on the Royal Mile and of course the Whiski rooms – more whiskies than you'll see just about anywhere!

Best Outdoor Area – and view If you've got wheels then head down to South Queensferry and Antico – this bar has the most amazing outdoor area, overlooking the Forth Bridge. I'd even go as far as saying it's one of the best outdoor areas in Scotland, never mind Edinburgh. A lovely gazebo, water feature, comfortable seating … and great drinks to boot. Roll on more good weather. 29

Tiki Bar 214 Bath Street Glasgow www.tikibarglasgow.com

Repertoire headed to The Tiki Bar in Glasgow last month, and enjoyed a night of rum, traditional Meringue dancing and tasty cocktails. The tipple of choice was Brugal rum, who hosted the first of two nights at Tiki Glasgow then El Bario in Edinburgh. You can see from the photos how much everyone enjoyed the night. The cocktails on offer were Daquiris and Mojitos which went down a treat. The night was rounded off with a Bartenders’ Mojito challenge which saw winner Toni Herbert from The Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh win a trip to Madrid.

The Drake is a gastro-style bar/ restaurant with a strong emphasis on quality, affordable food and drinks in a relaxed informal setting. It’s a neighbourhood bar with a capital ‘N’. The Italian accent also dominates the desserts with creamy panna cotta with a compote of seasonal fruits and classic affogato. Lynn s Corner Go Slow... poor show! I was disappointed last month after visiting one of my favourite restaurants in the West End – Stravaigin on Gibson Street, which I have visited on many occasions to enjoy their homemade burgers, seafood stew and Eggs Benedict for brunch. This time I popped in on a Sunday for brunch and ordered my usual Bloody Mary and Eggs Benedict. The place was busy, but after 50 minutes and many a grumble from our stomachs we started to think they had forgotten about us. We weren’t wrong! The waitress apologised on behalf of the kitchen, explaining our order had been misplaced. We waited another 20 minutes before our food arrived, and received no further apology or offer to compensate for our wait. Hopefully this was just a blip! But come on guys if we had to wait more than an hour, there should have a drink or coffee on the house!

Cocktails with charisma On a more positive note I enjoyed first class service at The Tiki Bar in Glasgow recently. Although the bar was busy the service was slick, professional and the bar staff looked like they were having great fun shaking up our four cocktails, which were spot on! I certainly would recommend their new Kraken Attack cocktail. Very tasty! You can also take part in cocktail masterclasses here check out www.tikibarglasgow.com 34

Awards time I love judging our annual pub awards (see news). I get to do what I love doing best – checking out great places with my friends – from late entertainment venues, to customer service, and new bar. However, it is certainly not as easy as it might seem... as we do have certain criteria – like welcoming bar staff, good door staff... but the key thing is always service. And in the main, we've not been disappointed.

Animal Farm It seems to be a new trend recently to name your bar after types of animals, and even more bizarrely after the colours black and blue. The Black Rabbit opened on Byres Road recently, following the opening of The Blue Goose earlier this year in Colinton, Edinburgh. You also have two other bars in Edinburgh that opened last year following the same theme, The Black Cat and The Red Squirrel and who knows what will pop up next? We already have the legendary Blue Dog, Black Sparrow and long standing restaurant The Black Sheep in Glasgow. All we need is a blue cow, a black pig then the full farm line up will have been named. The newest arrival on Byres Road, Black Rabbit is a trendy bar that offers 2 for 1 pizzas all day everyday! They also have a beer garden at the front which is on the sunny side of the road, great for alfresco pints and pizza. Why the name Rabbit? No reason, but it seems to have created a bit of a buzz.
