2011 BOWMORE BEN NEVIS CHALLENGE CO
E
ight teams of disabled and non-disabled people spent one of the last summer weekends, which in true Scottish style proved to be a wash-out, on what is the ultimate challenge; conquering the UK’s highest peak Ben Nevis. The Bowmore Ben Nevis Challenge was the culmination of months of training and preparation for the teams who were guided by ex-SAS officer and TV Presenter Ken Hames. The leaders, seven of whom used specially designed wheelchairs, had to navigate and direct their team to the summit and in the process helped raise vital funds for
Capability Scotland. Despite the appalling weather with almost constant rain and, at times, zero visibility the teams worked their way across treacherous terrain, avoiding sheer drops and contending with large boulders and fences. The first team to the top was led by Rosie Smith (24) from Nitshill in Glasgow. She and her team ‘Rosie’s Runners’ made the summit in just 5 hours and 20 minutes. ‘Despite having attempted this before, I was still nervous’ said Rosie, ‘but I was determined to make it to the top this time, having had to turn back before. I’m ecstatic to have got to the summit.’
Andy Steen (45) from Gourock and his team ‘We Want To Go Hames’ was second to the summit. He commented: “How many people can say they’ve been up Ben Nevis? I’ve joined an elite club! I hope this event will help dispel the myth that sometimes exists that disabled people need to be wrapped in cotton wool!” Cara Laing, Bowmore Brand Manager said:”Bowmore has always been a champion of nature and the great outdoors so we were delighted to be supporting Capability Scotland and the teams who took on the ultimate physical and mental challenge for both non disabled and disabled people.”

100 YEAR OLD WHISKY WINS AWARDS Whyte & Mackay has won the Whisky Magazine’s Innovator of the Year Award for its recreation of a 100-year-old whisky left under the Antarctic ice by famous explorer Ernest Shackleton. Described as the “whisky story of the century”, the so-called Shackleton replica – properly known as Mackinlay’s – was four years in the making by the time the whisky was found, excavated, shipped to Scotland and finally reproduced. Whyte & Mackay’s master
blender Richard Paterson picked up the award at the ceremony. He said, “I am absolutely delighted. This has been the highlight of my 40 year career to date in whisky, but would not have been possible without the efforts of a vast team of people both in and outside the company. “But my biggest thanks go to the Antarctic Heritage Trust, based in New Zealand, who found the whisky and subsequently helped us get some bottles back to Scotland. We have created a whisky which gives people a real taste of
the past.” Paterson spent eight weeks marrying and blending a range of malts together to recreate the 100 year old whisky. The bottle is now on sale for £100, with 5% from every sale being donated back to the Antarctic Heritage Trust. With 50,000 bottles being produced, it is hoped that the Trust will receive £250,000. National Geographic also recorded an exclusive documentary about the whole process which is due to air at the end of this year.
n The Black Grouse whisky will launch a new smokier variant called the Alpha Edition next year. The company describes The Black Grouse - Alpha Edition as a “richer, smokier expression” of The Black Grouse. Helen Potter, innovations manager for The Famous Grouse, said, “On first taste it is rich and sweet, before layers of smoke reveal themselves. We believe we have created something truly special which will appeal to Scotch whisky, bourbon and rum spirit drinkers keen to explore a richer, fuller version of The Black Grouse.” n GlenDronach Distillery has been selected by Donald Trump - the man with the worst hair for a wet and windy Scottish day - to supply the commemorative 25-yearold single malt that will mark the opening next summer of his £750 million golf complex on the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire. The rare whisky chosen for the official Trump International Golf Links has been handselected by Master Distiller, Billy Walker, from the thousands of top-quality single casks maturing at GlenD ronach’s warehouses at Forgue, near Huntly. It will be known, quite simply, as “Trump Scotland Single Malt Scotch Whisky”. GlenDronach, founded in 1826, will initially supply 500 bottles to celebrate the grand opening. DRAM

NE WS n Ardbeg Alligator, was unveiled in Septemer. This limited edition malt is the result of years of experimentation by the Ardbeg Distillery and its team headed up by Dr. Bill Lumsden,. It’s so called because of the cask it is stored in which have been subjected to “Alligator Charring” the method of charring (or burning) the inside of oak casks before they are filled with spirit. The burnt wood staves take on the appearance of an alligator’s scales, hence the name. The heart of Alligator is spirit matured in ‘Level 4’ casks the most intense type of charring possible. Dr Bill commented, “Extremely fierce charring of the casks has imparted additional smoky, barbecue flavours, giving Ardbeg Alligator a unique spicy bite that’ll catch you unawares.” Ardbeg Alligator has been bottled at 51.2% ABV and as with all Ardbegs is non chill-filtered for extra texture and mouth-feel. It costs around £65 a bottle and is available in all good whisky retailers.
Glasgow based artist scoops prize at inaugural anCnoc visual art competition

he first ever anCnoc Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Glasgow Print Studio artist competition, Northland, has named artist Christine Leathem’s lithograph ‘Untitled’ as it’s winning submission, after a judging process with renowned artist and playwright John Byrne. The competition put Scotland’s artists to the test over several months, calling for those working actively within the Print Studio to develop their own distinctive works inspired by the ‘black hill’ and stunning Highland scenery at Knockdhu Distillery, where anCnoc is created. Christine’s vivid black and white work caught the judge’s eye amongst both photographic and abstract interpretations of the brief. The romantic lithograph uses the
rolling hill as a frame for idealised imagery beneath. The artist prize includes a unique visit to the anCnoc distillery, to gain further inspiration from the surrounding landscape, and a £500 cash prize. Christine commented, “Winning the prize took me completely by surprise; it was a real confidence boost which has encouraged me to keep pushing my own work and keep creating. I am now looking forward to visiting the distillery!” John Byrne commented: “I’m so impressed with the working space in the building and especially the amount of talent bursting through the walls. Every piece of work was at such a high standard I found it hard to choose just one.” For further information visit www.ancnoc.comwww.ancnoc.com and www.gpsart.co.uk.

ISLAY TASTE MAP LAUNCHED This winter, Bowmore, the first Islay Single Malt whisky, has collaborated with whisky writer and Islay resident, Martine Nouet, known as ‘The Queen of the Still’ to create the Islay Taste Map. The map, which is the first of its kind, is the ideal guide to the complex and very varied characters of Islay’s eight magical distilleries: Ardbeg, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Bowmore. Not only is it useful to bartenders but consumers too can check it out online. The map uses colourcoordinated taste profiles to illustrate how each of the elements is reflected in the whiskies from each distillery. From the peaty and mossy cues of EARTH; the floral notes of heather and sweet meadow in AIR; the smoke, bonfires and burnt wood of FIRE; to the ocean air, sea salt and wet sand of WATER – each
distillery has a unique taste profile. The map also explains how the whiskies taste indoors and out
alongside a character profile and tasting notes. To download the map visit www.bowmore.com
THERE’S GOOD NEWS on the whisky front in amongst what seems to be interminable economic doom and gloom. Recent Scotch Whisky Association exports statistics show that sales in Asia rose by 33% while sales increased in Central and South America too. While the USA also proved popular spot for drinking our national drink. MSP and Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Richard Lochhead, said, “It is clear whisky is leading the way with another record year outstripping all trends and reaching new markets each year. We have great ambition for exports from Scotland. Other industries should be learning from the long term strategy and continuing investment of the Scotch Whisky industry.”

With a cask strength 54.6% ABV and non-chill filtration, it’s firmly aimed at connoisseurs.”
n Sick of all the usual haunts and faces that every weekend seems to throw up? How about heading along to The Dalmore Distillery to eyeball its brand new £1m Visitor Experience? The distillery, 20 miles north of Inverness, has put an unorthodox spin on traditional distillery tours. Scottish craftsmanship is in evidence in the design, from a carved oak boardroom table inlaid with the solid silver 12point stag’s head which appears on all bottles of Dalmore, to the specially designed bottle display cases, and the “bloodline”, a sparkling glass mosaic. Other features include hidden doors, with a secret entrance from the shop through to the Alchemy Room where a circular tasting table is internally illuminated. At the heart of the Experience is the Custodians’ Lounge where you can discuss your love of whisky over a glass of Dalmore. The Experience takes you on a sensory journey where they can embrace the unique atmosphere, sounds and smells of The Dalmore, explains Ian Mackay, Dalmore Distillery Manager, “All the sights, sounds and smells of the Dalmore’s distilling process have been carefully brought to life in this one of a kind distillery tour. Not only that, but we’ve taken great care to ensure that all of our visitors can savour a dram in the luxurious comfort of our Custodians’ Lounge.”

Springbank: A unique whisky A t the end of Paul McCartney’s Long and Winding Road down the Kintyre peninsula sits the small settlement of Campbeltown. Home to around 5000 people, The affectionately-nicknamed Wee Toon has a history much richer than many would expect as the former Whisky Capital of the World and one-time base for 37 different distilleries. It retains its status as one of Scotland’s distinct whisky producing regions and today boasts three working distilleries. Undoubtedly the best known of the trio, and the whisky which has become the flagship of the region, is Springbank. Springbank Distillery is unique. It is the oldest independent family owned distillery in Scotland. Founded in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell's illicit still, the Springbank Distillery is now in the hands of his great great great grand son, Hedley G. Wright. Owned by Mr Wright's J&A Mitchell & Co Ltd, Springbank is the only distillery in Scotland to carry out the full production process on the one site. 100% of the traditional floor malting, maturation and bottling is done at the distillery in Campbeltown. It produces the most hand made whisky in Scotland, with traditional production methods being used throughout the process, and human involvement at each and every stage. It is the only distillery in Scotland to have never chill-filtered, nor do we add any artificial colourings to any of our single malts. It is the only distillery in Scotland to produce three different single malts, Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn, using three different production methods. Tradition, history and good honest

iWhiskey This app has been developed by self-styled US whisky connoisseur and journalist, F.Paul Pacult. The app contains 600-plus reviews from the man himself, ranging from the reasonably priced, to whiskies that cost the earth. User reviews that people have posted are in the main very positive, although some do focus on the fact that this app can be a bit limited if you don’t share the developer’s views. For example, one post commented, ‘The reviews are kinda short, but spot on. I hated to spend a lot on this app without testing first, but I was not disappointed. Hope future updates add more feature & not just more reviews.’ More info: iwhiskeyapp.com
WhiskyiOdic The interesting thing about this app is that it presents whiskies in the form of a periodic table. This makes it easier to look for whiskies that share the same kind of profile, and this speeds up the selection process, especially if you’re at the bar and the pressure is on to make a snap decision. One user review awarded this 8.5/10 and added, ‘All in all a nice little time waster of an application for all you whisky lovers out
there. It doesn’t tell you anything you don’t know already but hey for £1.79 (which won’t buy you a decent dram these days) is a nice distraction.’ More info: whiskyiodic.istolz.com

So in theory you should never make another faux pas at the bar, or buy another dud bottle again. One user review said, ‘This app has really helped me decide which whisky to try with different foods! look after our customers in the Fort William area and also try and get involved with as many tastings and exhibitions as possible. You must have faced a few challenges, what would you say was the biggest one? I think the biggest challenge at the moment is the current economic conditions. It is very challenging times for everyone in the licence trade. However I feel Gordon & MacPhail provides excellent customer relations and offers a very flexible service to help meet our customer needs. Would you order whisky on a night out? Yes! Working for Gordon & MacPhail I am very fortunate as I get to sample a number of the 350 fantastic whiskies we bottle from throughout Scotland. If I had to choose one it would be from our own distillery Benromach 10 Years Old, it has just the perfect balance of sweetness and complexity to make it my favourite dram. How do you enthuse your friends about whisky? I am very passionate about whisky and I feel it rubs off on them! I feel there is a whisky style out there for everyone so sometimes it is just a matter of helping them find the right one,
if it is lighter style Lowland, peaty or a sherried Speyside. When you are not working what do you like to do? Well apart from trying new whiskies, I spend a lot of my time on the water. I grew up in a small fishing village and spent every weekend and holiday sailing and racing. It is something I have continued to do and I compete

throughout the UK and sometimes Europe. One of my most memorable sailing experiences so far was back in 2007 when I took part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which Benromach sponsored. It gave the opportunity to race from South Africa to Australia and sail in the Southern Ocean, which has been
one of my ambitions since I started sailing. What’s your favourite bar, and where do you like to eat? This is a hard one to answer; I guess it depends on where I am and who I am with: If I am in Glasgow with some friends I have been known to pop in to the Oran Mor or The Ubiquitous Chip they both have
great atmosphere and a great selection of whisky. If I am through in Edinburgh I have some great meals with my wife in the Magnum restaurant and a chilled out drink or two in the Albanach bar. Inverness is reasonably close (compared to Edinburgh and Glasgow) so I love to go and enjoy the Italian food at Riva. DRAM

The Whiski Rooms, Edinburgh
O
ne of the newest whisky bars to open in Scotland is The Whiski Rooms in Edinburgh. The new bar, which opened in the summer is not just a bar, instead it is a bar, bistro and shop. It is situated on North Bank Street just off the Mound and one of the reasons that the bar boasts a shop is that owners Anne and Gary Still, who also own the Whiski Bar on High Street, were complying with customers requests. Says Anne, “We were always being asked by our customers where they could go and buy the whisky we were serving, so we thought why not open a whisky shop with a bar attached. That way, customers could purchase straight away the whisky they’d tried in the bar. We have 500 whiskies in the shop and 300 in the bar.” Meanwhile the Whiski Bar’s the couple’s original bar picked up this year’s Glenmorangie Whisky Bar of the Year award with the other finalists being The Fiddler’s in Drumnadrochit, The Ballygrant in Islay and The Anderson in Fortrose. All excellent places to try whisky. 24 DRAM

TASTING NOTES The great thing about malt whisky is that people can taste a whole variety of flavours in the liquid. Whisky connoisseurs have a host of descriptives, on this page we give you some that are used to describe the various Island malts. When we talk about nose we mean smell, and palate means the taste. The Finish, is the taste that remains once you have swallowed. Brand information –the brands below were used in the recent whisky speed tasting events at OranMor. For further information you can always check their websites. Auchentoshan Classic Lowland Malt Colour: The Classic is soft, rich and creamy with a pale gold appearance. Nose: It has a rich vanilla and coconut smell with a hint of green apple and a tang of citrus zest. Palate: To taste it has a sweet vanilla cream, fresh green apple skin and a little mint. Finish: It has a wonderful fresh floral zesty finish. Benromach 10 year old Colour: Golden Nose: Rich sherry influence with fruit & nut chocolate and delicate spice cinnamon. Fresh green apples, with a malty, digestive biscuit note and light peat smoke in the background. Palate: Delicious forest fruits raspberries and brambles, sherry, malt creaminess with a stronger peat influence. Body: Long lingering finish with subtle sherry and peat. Finish: Balanced 30

Benromach Burgundy Distillery bottling Benromach 2000 Burgundy Wood Finish The Benromach Burgundy wood finish is initially matured in sherry and bourbon casks and the reracked into Pinot Noir wine casks from St Romain in Brugundy and matured for a further 7 years. Benromach described this whisky as having an initial burst of fruitiness - ripe cherries, brambles and Cox’s Pippin apples balanced with a rounding toffee sweetness and a peat-smoke element that lingers in the background. Bowmore 15 year old Darkest Nose: Dark and punchy. Sherry notes, juicy Corinth raisins. Spices. Creamy, mochaccino, sweet dates. Palate: Rich, woody, pine oil. Syrupy. Lovely, creamy toffee and malt. Smoky. Finish: Spicy, toffee, sherry, barley.
Bruichladdich 10 year old Colour: Golden Medium Amber Honey Tone Nose: First, a combination of honey and a zing of fresh lemon. Then fresh, estery air
bubbles of banana, ,apricot, peach and ripe cantaloupe melon. The backdrop is a hint of the warm, ocean breeze blowing over the sand dunes and shore meadows alive with the waft of wild flowers - Hebridean harmonisation. Palate: The mellow, oak sweetness is welcoming as are hints of bourbon and gingerbread, sherry and sultanas; and as they move on, there are the lighter, icing sugar-coated fruits. Finish: It’s exceptionally long for a 10 year old thanks to the natural oils from the malted barley still in the spirit. Price around £32 Glen Garioch 12 year old Nose: Peaty, aromatic, estuary. Palate: Medium bodied. Malty, buttery, nutty. Finish: Very long. Honey, spices, fruity. Inverarity Special Edition Blend (12 year old) Nose: The nose is gently floral, with citrus fruits, desiccated coconut and hazelnuts. Notes of damp moss and lichen appear with the addition of water. Palate: The age shows on the palate, which is luxurious and rounded, with a spicy, citric edge. Nuttier with water. Finish: The finish is pleasingly lengthy. It has an ABV of 40.0% ABV
