A Word From The Editor

As I’m writing this I’m looking out the window at a snowy scene. It could be mistaken for December, when it is actually late march! I trust all our readers enjoy their Easter break and hopefully the snow thawed in time for the bank holiday. This month you may notice we have had a large increase of community news. This is a great sign that our magazine is growing in popularity and readability every month. I use the word ‘our’ because I want the readers to have ownership of the magazine too. With that in mind please contact me with any content you may feel will benefit the community. On page 16 you will find a new section: the S66 Marketplace. This is your chance to buy and sell locally. Prices start from just £10 for a 1 month advert. Contact me for more information. Here is a handy tip for you: why not pin your copy of this magazine up on your notice board or fridge? That way when you want the number of a local business or just want to see what is happening in your area, you will have the information to hand. You can also connect with us via our website or facebook pages.

New Councillor

Maltby Town Council extended a warm welcome to Cllr Joe Robinson, who was elected on the 7th March as the new member for Maltby North. Cllr Robinson has already attended council meetings and has bravely volunteered to be a judge at the forthcoming Horticultural Show in August.

Litter & Dog Fouling

It is no surprise that the top priority from the recent questionnaire sent out by Maltby Town Council is litter and dog fouling. The Town Council are currently devising an incentive plan which will be rolled out across the community to find innovative ways to combat this growing problem.

Coronation Park Bowling Greens

After almost a year of negotiations, Maltby Town Council is eager to finalise an agreement with Rotherham Borough in regard the takeover of the Bowling Green and Pavilion in Coronation Park. It is hoped that it will be settled by the end of May.

Reported Damage

Regular reports are being received by Maltby Town Council in relation to quad bikes, 4 x 4’s and other vehicles abusing grass verges and recreation areas particularly on Yarwell Drive, Vernon Way, Upperfield Road and Laburnum Road. The drivers do not appear to have any respect for their neighbourhood and these instances are happening during the day and at night. This growing craze is not only an accident waiting, but leaves an eyesore to residents who have to look at the damage which has been created. If you see anyone causing wilful damage, you can report it directly to the Police by calling 101. All reports sent to Maltby Town Council have been forwarded to the police.

Free Sports Activities

Free fitness sessions 6pm – 7pm for young people aged 12 years and above. The sessions will run every Friday until 19th July and include Circuit Training, Get fit for football programme and other fitness improvement activities. Two holiday programmes for children aged 5 years old and above are available in the school holidays starting on 2nd April and 8th May from 10am to 3pm. The activities are free of charge. For further information or to book a place please call Active Regen on 01909 510 775. Places are limited and you will need to book in advance.

Memories of Football

Get Reading! Is a community learning project, based around familiarising people with computers and ereaders as well as focusing on literacy. The sessions start with football discussions both modern day and past topics such as the 1961 League Cup Final, the 1966 World Cup, Euro 96 and the Ronnie Moore Years. The second part of the sessions contains computer skills such as how to use Microsoft Office, how to set up an email account, how to use search drives and how to download an ebook. The project starts on 24th April, 1pm – 3pm. If you want to learn more, or sign up contact – Kathryn Wild, Rotherham United Community Sports Trust on 01709 827767

If you grow vegetables, flowers, fruit – whether in your back garden, in tubs, in baskets, on an allotment – if you can bake, make wine, knit, make cards, make button holes for ladies or gentlemen – then why not enter this year’s competition. SPOT LIGHT On Community News Watoto Children’s Choir Full Life Church Many readers may recall the appearance of the Watoto Children's Choir during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Pageant last year. The Watoto choirs act as ambassadors to raise awareness about the plight of the orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa. They have travelled internationally since 1994 and present their vision and mission through stories, music and dance. Maltby has welcomed them on a number of occasions including on March 30th for an appearance at the Full Life Church as well as a fund raising appearance at Tesco on High Street. Anyone interested in learning more about this exceptional and always very well received group of people can visit their website for more information and for details of how to make a very welcome donation to their cause. http://www.watoto.com/the-choir

Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled internationally since 1994 as advocates for the estimated 50 million children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war, poverty and disease. Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presents Watoto’s vision and mission through their stories, music and dance. Watoto choirs act as ambassadors to raise awareness about the plight of the orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa.

This year celebrates the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Maltby's Full Life Church. Over the decades, the church has had a major impact on the community and continues to do so today. As host to Sunbeams pre-school, a book shop, a residential centre as well as a conference centre, used by many community groups from the area, the site remains a hub of local activity. Started in 1933, by Mr Grafton, in an upper room above the old NatWest Bank on Low Road, Maltby, the church operated from a number of sites before settling in the former Rolleston House Residential Home in 1997. Mrs Norris, the founder's daughter, and mother of the current Minister, has attended the church since its foundation. Celebrating her own 90th birthday this year, an event was held on 3rd February where the community came together to jointly celebrate with her and the church. Full Life is a family orientated church. Relaxed, fun and friendly in a modern environment, it has plenty to offer to members both old and new. For further information see their website: www.full-life.org.uk

Since joining her local Slimming World group in January 2012 Katie is 7st 1.5lb lighter. Katie says "I feel like a new woman - in fact, I look so different that people I haven't seen for a while say they don't recognise me! Walking through those doors was the hardest thing I've ever done. But I needn't have worried everyone there was really welcoming and friendly. People think slimming means going hungry, eating nothing but salad, but its not like that. I love food and its never once felt like I was on a 'diet'. I still enjoy all my favourite meals.” Zoe Kemp who runs the group, says "The change we've seen in Katie is amazing. She's a huge inspiration to other members and I hope her success will inspire other people, who'd like to lose weight and become happier to take action. "

Matthew still has a good life with the love and help that his family provide, however he is in need of a specialised bed. This bed will help him be more comfortable and assist his family in getting him in and out of bed. As simple as this seems the bed in fact costs £9,200. We take all our comforts for granted, however Matthew does not have that luxury. Matthew and his family are holding an event at the Gordon Bennett Memorial Hall of Thurcroft in April and ask for your help. If you wish to attend the event or wish to hold a stall all funds raised go to help a special boy have some of the comforts everyone deserves. Stalls cost just £10. For details please call Stephanie on 01709 702242 or 07525 021522.

Richard III

The human remains, found in a Leicester car park and identified as those of King Richard III, are to be re-interred in Leicester. Despite Richard being the last of the Yorkist monarchs, and having strong Yorkshire connections, it seems his own wishes, and indeed those of living descendants, are to be ignored. An online petition to bring him home to Yorkshire, for a decent and respectful burial, has been launched. 100,000 signatures are required to at least force a parliamentary debate on the issue, and Spotlight readers are invited to add their support. For over 500 years this son of Yorkshire has lain in an ignominious grave; his name and reputation sullied over the centuries. It is high time his dignity was restored by returning him to the county he loved. This can only be achieved with Yorkshire's support. The petition can be accessed at: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/38772

Update from Bramley Parish council

The refurbishment for the children's playground on Flash Lane will start to take place after the Easter holidays. The proposed skate park for Flash Lane Recreation Ground has also been chosen and the order placed. We are still awaiting a response from RMBC regarding the hand over of the youth club building. The building is in need of refurbishment but RMBC is not cooperating. The 1st phase of tree planting has been completed around the cemetery and along Sandy Lane. More trees have been ordered and planting will take place in suitable areas. Input from residents welcome as to where this could be. The Council discussed the wind turbine planning application near to Fordoles Farm. The Council was opposed to this development. The Parish Council AGM will take place on Tues 14th May for election of Chair and Vice Chair.

GUIDE Strawberries

Strawberries can be grown in most gardens but are particularly successful in milder areas with frost free autumns. If space is limited they are very suitable for container growing - in pots, hanging baskets, even window boxes. Best of all is a strawberry tower or terracotta strawberry pot which allows you to grow a lot of plants in one place and has the added advantage of keeping the fruit off the ground and so dirt free. There are early, mid-season and late varieties so you could try a mixture of plants to extend your season. If using a container, use good compost and a slow-release fertiliser and soak the soil before planting. Have some netting ready for when the fruit appears or the birds might

beat you to it! If planting in the garden, you could consider planting through black plastic sheeting, pegged down and the edges buried to stop it blowing away. It’s best to mound up the soil in the centre where the plants will grow so that water will run off either side. Using this method means no weeding is required and you won’t need to put straw or other matting under the plants to keep the fruit clean. It also helps keep in the moisture and encourages early crops by warming the soil. Protect the flowers in spring if frost is e xpe cte d, with do u ble sh e e ts o f n e ws pa pe r . Once they have rooted and are growing well, lift carefully, detach from the parent plant and transplant to a new plot.

Horses & Skating To Success

Skating to Success

The winners of our February competition were delighted when we gave them the good news. Helen of Wickersley and her lovely Daughter enjoyed there magical time at the Disney on ice show. Motor Point Arena gladly gave us tickets so that we could hold the competition. Helen then sent us this email “Just wanted to let you know we thoroughly enjoying Disney on Ice and thank you for giving us the opportunity to win the tickets. I've never seen my 3 year old so absorbed. Needless to say we'll be going again

Sharing is definitely a more affordable alternative. Here are some tips to bear in mind when thinking of sharing a horse‌ • Local publications and riding magazines usually include ‘horses for share’ sections and you can often find several in your area. • Always go and try the horse, maybe a few times, as it is best to get a good feel for the horse before you take it on. • Agree to at least a three month trial as you will get a clear picture of the setupof what’s involved and the horse itself. After that time if you are not happy you can leave. • If it doesn’t work out, do not be afraid to look into other shares, one bad experience shouldn’t put you off. Some people do have age limits but try not to take it personally. • Enjoy it! You can learn many life skills from sharing a horse with someone else. The exercise from regular riding and yard workis an easy way to keep fit. Overall sharing a horse is a fantastic thing to do when you do not have the money to commit to buying your own.

Goldfish, Household & DIY

'ŽůĚĮƐŚ ŽŶ͛ƚ ŽǀĞƌůŽŽŬ ƚŚĞ ďĂƐŝĐƐ There is an assumption that the common coldwater goldfish is an easy and simple pet to keep. True to a certain extent but it’s easy to overlook some basics which may ultimately make your pet poorly or ultimately die. In these days of centrally heated homes, the coldwater aquarium is not truly cold so a heater/thermostat should be installed wherever practical to maintain a steady temperature of 21°c. Also, the thought that fishes will grow to fill the space available may render your fish unhealthy due to stunted growth if your aquarium is over-occupied, and some may die of stress if the space is too cramped. Goldfish also eat copious amounts and of course then excrete copious amounts so the filtration system should be entirely adequate to manage this. Overfeeding is the single most common cause of aquarium problems. Little and often is important - feeding the fish a couple of times a day should be sufficient. Good feeding is a way of avoiding swim bladder derangement which can be a common problem with goldfish.

E\ -RKQ +LOO After watching the much talked about “50 shocking facts about diet and exercise” one of the points made was regarding fruit and if it can contribute to weight loss or weight gain. A few people tend to get up in arms about fruit and the effect it has on body fat. When it comes to fruit, for me, a better question is “Is fruit necessary?” The best place to start in my opinion is to ask ‘how long do you think that fruit has been part of the human diet?’ Depending on where you live, this is a key question. If for example you wanted a Florida orange 500 years ago, where would you have gotten it from? I am not saying that oranges are bad but it does begin the question regarding the quantity and type of fruit people in the UK should eat. I often joke with clients “If bananas are good for you, then where are the banana trees?” This evokes the age old question about seasonal and local produce. This is the first point to make about fruit consumption. What Fruits Are UK Based? Here are some of the fruits grown in the UK, Apples, pears, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries, plums, damsons, rhubarb, peach, grapes, blackberries & redcurrants. As you can see, there are some common fruits that are native to this Country and they are mainly apples, pears and berries. This should help you to understand which fruits you are potentially more suitable for UK people (based on history) Apples “An apple a day, keeps the Doctor away” is the phrase we use and to be honest, an apple a day is ok. The potential challenge with apples is the pesticides they are sprayed with and also the fact that they are only in season from around August until October in this Country. This would mean that any other time of year, the apples may not be as

22

fresh and potentially they have been “modified” By this I mean that the difference between a shiny granny smith from the supermarket and an English cox taken from a tree is quite significant. This should make us just a little suspicious! Quick disclaimer, I am not saying that apples are bad here, just remember the point about necessity Fruit Juices & Food Marketing The fruit is healthy/essential thing causes another problem. Which is the sales and marketing of fruit juices and smoothies what tends to happen is that fruit is believed to be healthy so fruit juices must be healthy, right? Perhaps not! If you look at an orange for example, place a fresh orange on the window sill and see how long this lasts for. Some smoothies have sell by dates that are a year in the future? The reason for the difference is the removal of fibre. Fibre is what keeps you full when you eat and stops you eating more. If you can’t stop eating or drinking, then guess what? You will eat and drink more! So potentially, if I am trying to sell you a product, a) I want to make that product last as long as possible to avoid losing money and b) I want to make you drink and then buy more. Based on this point, if you think about it, when would you ever eat the amount of fruit that some of these smoothies contain? Some of them have like 1 banana, 10 grapes, 1 apple and so on, during no point in human evolution would we have ever eaten that much fruit in one go. Then there is the sugar content! Conclusion When it comes to fruit consumption, fruit is better than chocolate or biscuits for sure. However if you’re hitting a stumbling block with your weight loss then I would recommend looking at which fruit you are eating and maybe replace some of it with fat or protein. www.inspiringfitness.co.uk

Readers will recall the article in February’s edition of Community Spotlight which sought to explain the nature and purpose of the Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Cafes in Rotherham. years after the loss of memory function became really apparent to all her friends and family). We contacted the Alzheimer’s society and they were brilliant. Amongst the many suggestions that they made were that we should attend the Dementia Café – our response was that things were not that bad that we needed to attend a Dementia Cafe. Without going into details I was pressurised into going to a Dementia Cafe (Subsequently re-named Memory Cafes) by a group of (now very good Friends) At our first attendance at the Cafe we were made to feel very welcome. The Cafe was not what we expected – it was BUZZING with chatter, laughter and good natured banter. My wife and I both enjoyed the session and we now go the all the Cafe’s we can. I would recommend anyone whose partner, spouse, friend or relative to contact the Alzheimer’s Society and attend one of the Memory Cafes. I am sure you will be made most welcome and find it a very enjoyable and supportive experience.’

Good for a laugh!

‘From my own point of view. If I am having a bad day caring for my wife and feel really down when I walk into the Memory Cafe I always when I walk out after the session feeling much better having had a good time and a laugh’

Three carers and three key phrases

Three carers of people with dementia said they could not manage without the cafes and expressed how they are: (1) life savers (2) Keep them going; and (3) Help save their sanity;

From darkness into light.

‘I enjoy gardening and watched a programme where an analogy was used of being in a long dark tunnel with not very nice things within it and it was a dark, miserable, uncomfortable place. At the end of the tunnel was light, trees, shrubs and flowers which were welcoming and made you feel brighter. The Rotherham Alzheimer’s Society is that light and those trees and shrubs for my husband and I. When my husband was diagnosed with early onset dementia it was difficult to come to terms with and it was a very dark time and place. We cannot express what a difference the Rotherham Alzheimer’s Society has made to our lives. To receive on-going practical and emotional

support from people who understand and by being able to attend their Memory Cafes and Singing for the Brain groups, plus having the opportunity to meet new people and form friendships with people in a similar situation who genuinely care and understand what it is like to live with dementia is absolutely priceless. The difference it has made for both my husband and I is immeasurable’

Not what I expected – Please support Rotherham’s Alzheimer’s Society

‘I am 81 years of age and care for my wife who has Alzheimer's Disease. Reluctantly after a lot of encouragement we attended a Memory Café as my wife and I usually do not like attending such groups. It was not at all what we expected and to our amazement we thoroughly enjoyed it. We were warmly welcomed by both the staff and other attendees. The atmosphere was light hearted and enjoyable and it was such a welcome break from the worries of caring and adapting to daily living as my wife's condition deteriorates. Always having shared a keen musical interest, both my wife and I enjoy singing along to the musical concerts, it enables us to enjoy doing things together that I realised we had missed. People who want to can have a little dance together and you can visibly see people relaxing and enjoying themselves. The thing that struck me when I first attended the memory café was I was expecting doom and gloom but it was the absolute opposite and the atmosphere was that of fun and enjoyment and most heartening of all is that it is often hard to tell the people who have dementia from their carers. Rotherham Alzheimer's Society is doing a wonderful job and making a big difference to people in the Rotherham area we are very lucky to have them. I would urge anyone who is caring for someone who has dementia to contact them as I am sure they will be able to help in some way’ I know that many other people who attend the Memory Cafes have similar thoughts as those expressed above. So lets help support this fabulous local institution. Come on down! STOP PRESS! A new Memory Café, based in Maltby, will be held at The Wesley Centre, Blyth Road, S66 8JD at 1.30 pm - 3.30pm Monday 29th April and then monthly. Please call the Alzheimers Society on 01709 580543 to book in or else just come along and join in. Motivation To Foster By An Anonymous Foster Carer

Myself and my wife were passed as foster carers at the end of last year and now that we are a few months into our fostering career I felt that it would be a good time to reflect on our journey. Over the next few issues of Spotlight I will be sharing our experiences, from our initial interest, through the application and assessment period and right upto having our first placements. To say that the journey so far has been like a roller-coaster ride would be an understatement, however if you ask us if we feel its worth it, without hesitation we would both respond with a very enthusiastic 'yes, absolutely worth it' Throughout the assessment period we were asked the same question on many occasions: “what is your motivation to foster?”. Every foster carer has a different motivation to take on this task, and it is not a decision that should be undertaken lightly. For us this is the story of how our motivation to foster came about. As a couple we had both always had an affinity to young people and have worked in youth and children's work for a number of years. We had been unsuccessful in conceiving our own child, but had felt that we had something to offer in the life of a child. We contemplated entering into foster care for a number of years but finally 'took the plunge' just over a year ago around Christmas time. We were in a period of life where we were getting things sorted. And as a New Years Resolution we said “this year we will complete the house and apply to become foster carers”. “Why fostering and not adoption?” we were asked. The answer was simple; we believed that we were young enough to consider adoption many years down the line and that in the here and now we could help more children by fostering. I want to encourage you to give some thought to if you could be the difference in a child's life. If you are interested in fostering in rotherham contact the RMBC fostering team on 01709 823976 or see www.rotherham.gov.uk/fostering for more information.

SPOT LIGHT Silent Killer By Aaron James

Spotlight on S66 readers will more than likely be aware of the recent campaigns by such cancer charities as Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support. It is also likely that many women are well informed about the availability of screening for breast and cervical cancer. Of course all these things are valuable assets in the battle against these insidious diseases. However, what many may not be aware of is the fact that March 2013 was also designated Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Despite the fact that, in the UK, up to seven thousand women are diagnosed with the disease every year, research has shown only 3% of women are aware of the symptoms and there is currently no effective screening method to detect it. Often referred to as the Silent Killer, it is a fact that if diagnosed early enough, most cases can be effectively treated. However, because of the lack of awareness of symptoms by both patients and GP's, it is all too often diagnosed at a later stage

Silent Killer

when treatment becomes much more difficult. Early diagnosis is the key to improving outcomes. The most common symptoms are persistent pelvic or abdominal pain, increased abdominal size/persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes), difficulty eating or feeling full quickly and urinary problems (needing to urinate more frequently than normal or more urgently). There are occasionally other symptoms and Ovacome, a national charity devoted to raising awareness, has an online symptom tracker where symptoms can be entered and the result printed off to show the GP. It has also devised the BEAT campaign and all women, especially those over 50, should be aware of the signs and be prepared to raise them with their GP. B...is for Bloating that is persistent and does not come and go. E...is for Eating less and feeling fuller. A...is for Abdominal pain. T...is for Tell your doctor. To access Ovacome's symptom tracker visit http://www.beatonline.info/ or for information visit Target Ovarian Cancer http://www.targetovariancancer.org.uk/
