Welcome to the August edition of Community Spotlight magazine. Well, what an exciting rollercoaster ride the past few weeks have been, since Matthew handed us the reins to your local community magazine. Yorkshire-born through and through, and originally from just up the road in Tickhill and Rossington, we’re no strangers to the great local communities that you’ve already established. Whether it’s local businesses, or community groups, charities and societies, it’s now our privilege to be able communicate to the wider community who they are, and how you can benefit by getting in touch with them. I’m sure you will join us in wishing Kirsty and Matthew every success in their new careers in the local community. In just these past few weeks we have already been warmly welcomed by the businesses and community groups we have met, and just as importantly we hope to now be welcomed by you too, as a reader of Community Spotlight magazine. This month, the magazine’s distribution increased by 2,500 homes, and we now distribute to just over 19,500 homes every month, completely free. We want to say a special ‘hello’ to all of our new readers; we hope you enjoy your monthly community magazine. With that in mind we have put together a jampacked edition, with lots of places to visit and ideas of things to see and do. If you have a young family, you will now be looking forward to spending the summer with your children, yet you may have wondered ‘how can I keep them entertained’? We’ve some great ideas for you on pages 8 and 10, which should at least prevent you from hearing ‘I’m bored’ too often! HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Thurcroft Gala This year’s Thurcroft Gala will be on Sunday 25th August from midday to 5.00pm, at the Thurcroft Cricket Field. The event sponsored by Thurcroft Big Local, promises to be bigger and better than ever before. The family fun event will include; a World War II vehicle display, an assault course, a bouncy castle, octopus ride, swings and fairground rides, hook-a-duck, face painting, five-a-side football and a bowling competition. As well as the above, the Cubs and Scouts will have a gazebo, there will be stalls in the marquee, and the Escafeld Mediaeval Society will be holding a jousting event between 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Children of all ages can join in the fun, with races planned for age’s five to seven and eight to 11, for the egg and spoon race, the three legged race, the sack race, a sprint and obstacle race, with prizes donated by Thurcroft Miners Welfare Club.

FREE SUMMER HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES Following the very successful holiday programmes in April and May, Maltby Town Council are running two more school holiday activity weeks; Monday 29th July to Friday 2nd August and Monday 5th August to Friday 9th August, both from 10.00am to 3.00pm all week. Rotherham Show On the weekend of Saturday

7th September and Sunday 8th September, the annual Rotherham Show will once more be held in Clifton Park, with two full days of family fun and entertainment planned. Organisers have once more pulled out all the stops for the show, now in its 34th year. Highlights will include; a Horticultural Show, a Vintage Vehicles Rally, Fun Fair, Stalls and Refreshments and even a Fresh Produce and Craft Quarter. Both days will run from 10.00am to 6.00pm, and promises a weekend full of fun and entertainment for all ages. Rother FM Main Arena will present the soundtrack to the weekend, with a weekend of sensational music, and there will even be a Music Marquee. Animals also get to join in the fun with a Fun Dog Show organised and a Ferret Display. MALTBY TOWN COUNCIL PLAN The long awaited Maltby Town Council Plan has been completed and will be launched at the Maltby Gala on the Saturday 3rd August. ADVICE SERVICE The advice service has been run on Tuesday afternoons from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at the Edward Dunn for the past few years, and proved so popular, that an extra session was necessary and is now also available every Saturday morning from 10.00am to 12.00pm. Summer is well and truly here, and the children are on their summer holidays, so now is the time to ﬁnd cheap, easy and fun activities to keep them entertained. LITTLE CHEFS Most children adore helping to conjure up a culinary delight;

whether it's a delicious cake, pie or something special for daddy’s tea. Start off with something simple like sugar free jelly and work your way up to more challenging dishes like ﬁsh pie or apple crumble. You could set a cooking task for each week and invite a group of their friends round to sample the result. It also offers a great way to teach your child about food and the importance of healthy eating. PRETEND DISCO Get everyone to dress up in their party clothes, close the curtains, put the music on loud and dance, dance, dance! The children can take it in turns to play DJ and select different music

WASHING THE CAR This may be perceived by any nosey neighbours as a ploy to get our kids doing our dirty work but boy does it keep them occupied! They’ll enjoy washing the car clean with sponges and foam and you could set them tasks, such as cleaning certain

clues in the house or garden each with activities on lasting around ten minutes. These can be anything from painting each others faces to building a tower and having a quick drinks break (you could place the items they need to complete their task next to the clue). Once the hunt is ﬁnished, each child can win a small prize or decide on which games they want to play next.

THEMED DAYS Set a theme for the day and dress up accordingly. Children will adore all of those role-play opportunities being a fairy/pirate/princess/ soldier brings and will value you getting in on the action too. MAKING PLAY DOUGH Children will adore making play dough and they will have fun exploring different food colourings to give the dough that lovely vibrant colour. All you need to do is mix together one cup of plain ﬂour, half a cup of salt and two tablespoons of cream of tartar, and then add a cup of water ►

GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS Depending on your child's age, they pose a perfect opportunity to teach them about art, photography, history and the whole notion of creativity. There are often children’s classes and talks designed for children so it's worth calling before-hand to find out more. PARKS Kids love a good session in the park - it's a perfect way for them to socialise with other kids, let off steam and get a healthy dose of exercise. You could arrange to meet friends, or just nip out for a quick half an hour before dinner time. If you need to drive to get to your nearest park, why not make an afternoon of it with ball games, something to eat and a camera to snap all those memorable moments. INSECT WATCHING Give your child a bug box and see how many creepy crawlies they can find in the garden. Once they have a box full ask them to count them and describe which ones they like best and why. Once they've finished studying them they can find a good place to set them free. BLACKBERRY PICKING Give each child a container and go on a blackberry picking mission! Children will love to see how many they can collect and you can use the blackberries to make a delicious pie for dinner. It's a great way to enjoy seasonal food and it doesn't cost a penny.

Create your own bedroom sanctuary A bedroom should be a personal getaway, a sanctuary, which expresses your favourite colours, feelings, and collections. Learn the main rules to remember when decorating your bedroom. CHOOSE SUBTLE COLOUR Instead of bold primary colours, choose soothing shades and a restful palate of monochromatic tones. Remember colour theory; gentle hues of blue, lavender, or green are considered calm and serene. Rich jeweltoned hues help set the mood of cosiness and comfort. Use toned-down versions of your favourite colours in the bedroom. That might mean choosing mauve instead of aubergine, or pumpkin instead of tangerine. BEX KNIGHT looks forward to moving your wardrobe from summer to autumn I don't want to be pushing you out of this glorious heatwave just yet, but in a couple of months it will start to get a little colder, so I'm just going to give you a few gentle hints and tips on how to make sure you make the summer to autumn wardrobe transition very smoothly. If you're anything like me, you like to know what's coming next — not just so you can keep an eye out for items for next month, but so you can slowly start to infiltrate your wardrobe now. “Lively. Radiant. Lush… A colour of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony” — Pantone’s colour of 2013 is emerald. Trend forecasters and fashion houses all over the world latched onto this immediately, but because of the shade you can expect to see this colour within fashion a lot more towards the end of August following right through to the beginning of 2014 as it’s a very rich autumn/winter colour. Cardigans and jeans are, to me, a wardrobe staple. Jeans can be paired with a vest in the summer if you don’t like getting your legs out, and cardigans can be paired with shorts if you don't like getting your arms out. To be quite honest, they can be thrown on at anytime during the summer because it might just not be that warm. Which is why the make such fantastic transitional pieces. Jeans are worn a lot in the autumn and winter

months because they're sturdy, and cardigans are very easy to layer with vest and thin jumpers so keeping you warmer. So why not get them in emerald green now? They'll still look fantastic in this weather when paired with a crisp white colour or even clashing with a bright yellow shade, and you'll be able to pair them with burgundy and navy colours once the leaves start falling.

Scofton Dog Show The immensely popular

Stellar line up for Proms at the Priory Enjoy an afternoon

of light, popular and classical music at Hodsock Priory on Sunday 8th September from 3.00pm to 6.00pm, at this year’s Proms and Picnic at the Priory. The event will feature Tenor John Hudson, and Soprano Deborah Norman. This year’s event is in support of Western Park Hospital Cancer Charity and tickets cost £15 (concessions £13) per person

in advance and £20 on the gate on the day. You can purchase tickets from J’Adore JS Bridal, 110 High Street, Maltby. The event has been supported by Jeremy Neal Independent Funeral Directors and is in association with local Rotary Clubs. Gates are open for picnics from 1.15pm and the event will also include special guests such as the Harworth Brass Band, the Elizabethan Academy Choir, Kaminari UK and guest presenter Paulette Edwards from BBC Radio Shefﬁeld. Scofton dog show, will be held this year on Sunday 1st September, at Scofton Village Hall, off the Retford to Worksop Road. Last year’s events attracted dog lovers from numerous towns and villages, and was enjoyed by all who said it was a great day out. The 2012 event raised over £1,600, and it is hoped that this year’s event will be better than ever. To enter your dog in the show, entries cost £1.00 per class, and classes commence from 11.00am. Classes range from pedigree and novelty, to fancy dress and the obstacle course. There will even by sheep dog demonstrations.

The Pedigree judging starts at 12.00pm, and there will many refreshments on offer such as ice-creams and hot dogs. There will be table top stalls to browse and if you would like to book a stall, please call 01909 472324 to apply.

Happy August my fellow bakers! As I write this we are enjoying a lovely warm spell — is summer ﬁnally here? This month I am sharing with you a recipe for Swiss Roll. My late Nan Nellie was a huge fan of a slice of Swiss Roll in an afternoon with a cup of tea, and most

likely watching Countdown. People often get frightened of attempting it, but i assure you it is easy to do and looks impressive, and it is a good recipe to add to your repertoire. I have added a twist to the basic recipe by adding fresh raspberries and double cream.

Rasberry Swiss Roll

INGREDIENTS For the cake mix • 3 free-range eggs • 75g golden caster sugar • 75g self-raising flour For the icing • 75g raspberry jam • 125ml whipped double cream • 100g raspberries For the icing • Icing sugar METHOD • Preheat the oven to 200°c • Grease and line a 23cm x 30cm Swiss roll tin • Whisk the eggs and sugar in a bowl until pale and fluffy • Fold in the flour and spoon the mixture into the tin • Bake in the oven for 7–10 R

Once you have finally decided that it is time to get into shape and improve your health, the next hurdle is to decide which exercise to pursue. The two most popular options are to either join a gym or buy some new trainers and go out running. But which one will get the best results!? Actually, the first decision you need to make is ‘what is my goal?’ Losing weight, getting fitter or looking better in your swimming costume, whatever it may be, once you have a clear understanding of your goal, choosing the path you take will be much easier. best option when it comes to weight loss. As with any steady-state cardio, results plateau after about 8 to 12 weeks, assuming you have not gained an injury before that. Do not forget, running is a skill. Many people do not have the correct biomechanics to simply go out and pound the pavement hence the number of cases of shin splints and knee injuries. If you run simply because you enjoy it, this is different, but you will still need to have a good range of movement to prevent injury. Signing up to a gym is a good option, but keep off the cardio equipment!

If you want to lose body fat, using free weights is your best option. Designing a programme which contains multi-joint movements such as deadlifts, squats and chin ups will ramp up your metabolism, meaning you will burn more calories even while resting. You will also improve your bone density, reducing the risk of osteoarthritis, as well as increasing your heart and lung strength. However, the lifting of free weights with proper technique is imperative, hence the importance of training with a well-qualiﬁed professional, as incorrect practice can lead to reduced range of movement and injury. If you really do not like the idea of lifting weights, then opt for a circuit class or a Bootcamp such as the one running at Satori Health. A well designed class should enable you to go at your own pace, but still get all the beneﬁts of mixing cardio and weight lifting. Ultimately, the best exercise programme is the one you can stick to. As soon as you start to realise that progress is slowing down, change the programme. It can be something as simple as doing the exercises in reverse order! Most people with a training age of less than two years will adapt to a programme in about four to six weeks. Over 100 men in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw have booked themselves in for the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening programme. The screening is available for the ultrasound scan that examines the aorta in the abdominal area, to check for a swollen artery. This is in addition to the almost 8,500 men who are 65 this year who have already received invitations for screening. Vascular surgeon Mr Ray Cuschieri, clinical lead for the NHS AAA Screening Programme in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and Deputy Medical Director of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals said, “It is fantastic to see that so many men have made contact with us since the AAA Screening Programme was announced last week. “The programme is extremely important as men who have an AAA do not generally know they have the condition until it is too late, which is why screening is so important. “The screening test is simple, painless, non-invasive and usually takes less than 10 minutes. Early detection

Over 100 take up AAA screening within days of AAAs through screening enables us to offer monitoring or treatment, helping to reduce the number of deaths caused by the condition. “While the number of men making appointments is very encouraging, I am asking every man who has received an invitation to consider attending for screening to benefit from the programme. I would also extend this invitation to any men aged over 65 who can also make an appointment.” In England and Wales, an estimated 80,000 men aged between 65 and 74 are affected by AAAs, which are caused when the main blood vessel in the abdomen — the aorta — weakens and starts to expand. If undetected, the aorta can rupture — a medical emergency that is usually fatal. Around 6,000 people die every year from ruptured AAAs.

Close encounters of a prickly kind… Gardening is full of cheap thrills,

whether it’s spotting the first snowdrop of spring, a seemingly dead plant suddenly finding a zest for life or growing an eight foot sunflower, but, for me, the pinnacle is realising that we are not alone out there in the borders. The scale and complexity of the garden ecosystem is immense, ranging from microscopic soil organisms to pterodactyl-sized herons, but traditionally gardeners have their ranks of “friendly forces” such as ladybirds and frogs, whilst moles, grey squirrels and aphids are generally considered to be on a par with the Taliban! Personally, I‘m a live and let live kind of chap and have never resorted to any kind of “final solution” when it comes to pesky varmints — even to the extent of once pardoning a fox for slaughtering my chickens and ducks. Yes, I was pretty miffed and very sad for my pets and egg layers, but the sight of a fox

shaped pancake on the road near my house the next day appeared to have been some sort of divine pay-back. Likewise, every time a sparrow hawk vectors in on a friendly robin, or the baby frogs are hoovered up by just about anything big enough to snaffle them, I don’t fret unduly. I’m certainly not sentimental about these natural events and try not to intervene in the cycle of life out in the jungle (not that my garden could in any way be described as a jungle, of course). I’ve long since given up trying to hand-rear fledglings after too many failures and I only ever resort to the likes of slug pellets when absolutely necessary. Even then, I will purge my soul and conscience with a hefty dose of sack cloth and birch twigs. I was listening to an interesting (if somewhat sobering) debate recently about the ethics of conservation and why we should probably just let some species die out naturally. Clearly the panda is worth spending squillions on because it’s a big cuddly teddy of a creature, but what about all the birds, bees, bats and other critters that we used to think of as part of the garden furniture not so long ago? Butterflies are a rare and beautiful sight these days, but they are as much a feature of the garden scene as any delphinium or coiffured rose

I remember years ago the annual ritual of house martins attempting to build their mud nests under the eaves of our house — much to the annoyance of my house proud parents! Sadly, they’ve not returned in years and must have fallen into the black hole that has also swallowed up what is probably the number one gardener’s friend, the hedgehog. Its disappearance is as mysterious as that of the once omnipresent sparrow and cannot be explained by any obvious factors such as a new generation of hogs that don’t share their elders’ knowledge of the highway code! Thankfully, they’ve not all been run over, because I had the good fortune to bump into one in the vegetable plot the other day. I was leaning on my spade, having a quiet moment recovering from yet more digging, and was not sure if the hog, me or my little dog Woody was the most surprised. Suffice to say I was suitably (and cheaply) thrilled and Woody the dog was very comically prickled!

Join the club Let a holiday club help with your child care this summer Alex Brown on how to keep the kids entertained in the summer holidays

The six-week school

holiday looms. Up and down the country you can hear collective groans from working parents beginning to stress about securing holiday care for their children. Whether you need childcare while you’re at work, or a way to keep your energetic offspring entertained, holiday clubs can be a lifesaver. There is such a wide variety available that you are sure to be able to ﬁnd something that suits both you and your child. Some clubs are run by local authorities and are based at schools, nurseries or community centres. You’ll ﬁnd that places offering ‘before and after school’ clubs often have holiday clubs too. to clubs offering specific activities, such as a sport or performance art. There are also some big companies offering schemes throughout the UK, such as Kings Camps (www. kingscamps.org) and Super Camps (www.supercamps.co.uk). Visit www.daycaretrust.org.uk/ nafis to find details of your local Family Information Service. They will have details of childcare in your area, including holiday clubs. Most clubs will be registered with Ofsted and you can find details of their latest inspection at www.ofsted.gov.uk. It’s a good idea to visit the venue and speak to the manager. Make sure you are happy with the child to adult ratios and the qualifications of the staff — they should all have been CRB checked. If you don’t know anyone else who has used the

club, ask the manager to provide you with some recent testimonials. Try to see a timetable and photos of a typical day at the club. Activities can range from sports, crafts and cooking to quad biking, archery or trampolining. Many clubs will plan a theme for the day or week, and some may let the children choose what to do. Find out what children need to bring with them — aprons, trainers or drinks, for example. They probably won’t need any money unless they are going out for a day trip. Make sure you know the arrangements for dropping off and collecting children, and what happens in an emergency. You will need to book your child’s place in advance. Check the session times carefully — some clubs may be half days, some will run within school hours, while others may be open from 8.00am until 5.00pm or 6.00pm. Ask what is included in the price. Is lunch provided, or will children need to bring their own? Paying for a week is usually cheaper than paying per day. You may also get a discount for more than one child. Some clubs will accept childcare vouchers, and you can claim back some of the cost of Ofsted-registered clubs if you qualify for Family Tax Credits. Happy holidays!

Take with you supplies of oil, water, antifreeze and screen wash, and a spare tyre. If you are travelling in Europe, you will also need headlamp beam adapters, an alcohol breathalyser, GB plate, spare bulbs, a warning triangle and reﬂective vests.

Measure your tyre pressures to ensure a smooth and fuelefﬁcient ride. If you are carrying a heavy load, the tyres may need to be at a higher pressure.

People with Dementia (who still

live in the community) and their carers in our area beneﬁt from ‘Memory Cafés’ run by the local Alzheimer’s Disease Society. They are held at four venues across the town and there are also two regular related ‘Singing for the Brain’ events. The nearest Memory Café is at the Wesley Centre, Maltby. The rooms where the various cafes are held are chosen for being light, airy, accessible and friendly. The ones at the Wesley Centre are extremely well appointed and have variously catered for everything from musical events to ﬁlm-shows and church services. So when Alzheimer’s Society staff and volunteers set the hall out like a café with tables and chairs, coffee, tea and biscuits it really looks the part. There is good conversation from the carers, professionals, volunteers and those who have Dementia. I have found myself chatting to people who have had interesting jobs all around the world, and many people who have touching stories of love and care. This is where the sharp end of

Alzheimer’s Society Memory Cafés down your way Dementia, which affects perhaps 800,000 people in the country and around 3,000 in Rotherham, can be blunted in a warm, friendly and uplifting environment. It is something everyone involved looks forward to. It helps stimulate, encourage, support and amuse. The games which are sometimes played make everyone into an active competitor, and as to the music and singing – it is up to you whether or not to join in but most people do – it really can bring back that spark in people’s eyes. I have seen people light up due to the additional company, sing-alongs and the structured,

enjoyable musical stimulation. The music is often provided by the now famous Lost Chord group, also based in the ofﬁces at the Wesley Centre. People leave renewed and that it is surely for the good. Even if you do not normally like ‘groups’, if you are affected then do please give the Alzheimer’s Society a ring on 01709 580543 about going.

Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre David Coldrick Managing Director Home Instead Senior Care

The South Yorkshire Multiple

Sclerosis Therapy Centre is a bit of a local gem in terms of the unique support it provides. It is a self-funding, self help, therapy centre based at St Mary’s Drive in Catcliffe. It focuses on offering people a chance to benefit from non-intrusive, holistic, complementary therapies and practical mutual support. It is mainly used by people with MS but is also used by people with other neurological conditions ranging from those caused by injury to such as fibromyalgia. Established in 1985, the new centre was opened in 2001. The aim of the centre is to help people to help themselves, especially in keeping as safe and mobile. It offers members various therapies such as; oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, osteopathy, foot health, counselling, massage, aromatherapy, Reiki and reflexology. Some therapies may be considered more holistic than others, yet the centre’s experience suggests different people benefit from different things. The proof of the centre’s importance is demonstrated by having over 200 members. The centre is run by a friendly team, Lynne Foster, the Manager, Julia Conlan-Greaves and Judy Jones who always give a warm welcome as do

the volunteers and members who are there at any given time. The fact is that a chat with laughter can also be a great thing to help revive the spirits, encourage and stimulate. I have visited a number of times and the MS Therapy Centre is not a sombre place for sure. The centre costs around £116,000 a year to run and receives no government funding. Monies are raised through donations, grants and fundraising. Having just one full time and two part time members of staff, the members, volunteers and friends of the centre are the key to its survival Part of the centre’s message is to explain what Multiple Sclerosis is. Multiple Sclerosis was described to me as; non-discriminative and noncontagious, it affects no two people the same way. It is the most common neurological disorder among young adults (which came as a surprise) and it affects around 100,000 people in the UK, whilst more common in women than men, by a 3:2 ratio. Apart from the physical effects MS can cause, it can also make people feel isolated. At the centre people can

meet friends, have a gossip, a laugh or even try their hand at various activities. Companionship is always vital. I asked about the oxygen therapy in particular, which is a key reason for the existence of the centre. Manager Lynne Foster says, “Oxygen Therapy consists of breathing medical oxygen through a mask in a specially constructed, pressure controlled chamber, and is often reported, by people with MS, to help improve symptoms such as fatigue, bladder function, balance and co-ordination. “The main objective of any useful therapy in the established disease is to limit further damage rather than expect to cure existing scars. Prevention is more realistic than a cure as such.” Linda, a volunteer, at the centre who says, “The MS Therapy Centre is a wonderful place to find support and friendship. I’ve learned a lot coming here; people listen and have time for you. There is always a lot of laughter too. We always need volunteers who might want to help us raise funds, do some admin or even train as a chamber operator. So I would urge you to contact us.”

Eyes down for the reading challenge! This summer there’s another

Maltby Library even has a full schedule of Creepy House Activities for your child to take part in. Children can now sign up at their local library and receive a free poster to start them off. Then each time they read two books, they get a set of stickers (some of which are scratch and sniff too!) to encourage them to stick with their challenge. When they have read all six books to complete their challenge, there’s a big party to celebrate!
