A Word From The Editor
I chose a rainbow for this month’s front cover, and I’m hoping that that as we start to head towards the summer you can start to see your “Rainbow” emerge. To you that may mean finally seeing some sunshine, or it could be that you finally get that breakthrough you’ve been waiting for. I’ve found over the course of my life that its important not give give up hope that things can change, because there is always something better around the corner. We have 2 great competitions this month that I want to encourage you to enter. The first is for 2 tickets to see the rock band Rush at the MotorPoint Arena. The second is for £30 High Street Vouchers and to qualify for entry to this competition you simply need to like and share our Facebook page before May 20th. More details on these competitions can be found on page 16. I want to remind our readers that Community Spotlight has always been for and about the communities of S66. We truly care about the communities we serve and I want to take this opportunity to remind community groups that they can send us any content they would like to see featured. Don’t forget to connect with us via Facebook to keep upto date with all of our latest news.

Maltby Colliery's Last Stand
For over a hundred years coal mining has been the mainstay of the economy in Maltby. Since the first coal production at the colliery back in 1910, the industry provided employment opportunities to people from all over the country for many years. The influx of mineworkers caused unprecedented growth in the population, creating a rich and diverse community which expanded even more with the establishment of new supporting trades and services. On Saturday 6th April 2013 a march, accompanied by the brass band, took place from the pit at 2pm. Going first to the cemetery, where a wreath was laid to show respect on the Unknown Miner's Grave. The march then went down the high street and finally ended back at the minors welfare, where people could reminisce and raise a glass to the end of an era. We can truly say that Maltby will never be the same, and we need to say our thanks to the workers of the colliery, past and present.
Treasure Island Indoor Play and Party Centre
Parents in S66 now have a brand new venue to help keep their children entertained. With the summer holidays fast approaching, that is good news indeed. Treasure Island Indoor Play and Party Centre, set in an 11,500 sq ft building on Hellaby Industrial Estate, is Rotherhams's largest indoor play and party centre. With ample car parking directly outside the building and seating capacity in excess of 200, the centre is the ideal venue both for a children's treat and for those party occasions. The clean and welcoming environment boasts a dedicated baby and toddler area away from the main soft play area which is suitable for children up to ten years of age. The facilities on offer are impressive with a 4-lane super fast astra slide, sports area for football and basketball, interactive games within the play equipment and three dedicated, themed party rooms to cater for even the largest of parties. Hot and cold food is served throughout the day and hot and cold drinks are also available, including fresh bean coffee. The centre also has ladies, gents and disabled toilets along with baby changing facilities. Excellent value is offered and annual memberships are available as well as off-peak pricing before 3:30pm on weekdays and child-minder discounts.

Maltby Town Council
The Rotherham Less Lonely Campaign Free Activities for Young People, Loneliness affects many older people and can have devastating Sport in the Community effects on their quality of life, their health and their ability to live independently. Around half of all people over 65 report feeling lonely at some time each week. And 10% will feel lonely all of the time. That means that over 4000 older people in Rotherham feel like this every single day of their lives. ‘I don’t get out much anymore and without my daily Linkline call from Age UK I wouldn’t speak to anyone all day most days’, Mary, aged 89 In April 2012 Age UK Rotherham in partnership with Rotherham Partnership and Rotherham Older People’s Forum launched the ‘Rotherham Less Lonely Campaign’ to look at ways we could all work together to improve this situation for older people across Rotherham Borough. The Campaign aims to raise awareness of how big a problem loneliness is for older people and how it can affect their lives. It also aims to encourage local people and community organisations to get involved in finding ways to help older people who are affected by loneliness in their own area. We are asking local people to think about how they can help by: • Giving time as a volunteer for services like Two’s Company at Age UK Rotherham or at groups helping older people in their own community • Giving money through donations and fundraising to support the Campaign to continue and to help Age UK Rotherham to keep providing services to help older people who are lonely;Taking action as an individual or a group in the community to address the issue in their own locality, for example, by setting up a social group or popping round to see an older person who lives nearby. ‘If I can make someone feel happier once a week, then it makes me feel happy and appreciated and shows it is all worthwhile’, Barbara, Volunteer for Two’s Company
Following the very successful holiday programme in April, Maltby Town Council are running another school holiday programme starting on 7th May from 10am to 3pm all week. These activities are free of charge. For further information or to book a place please call Active Regen on 01909 510 775. Places are limited and therefore you are advised to book in advance.
Free Benefit, Debt And General Advice At The Edward Dunn Memorial Hall

Free professional advice is available on: • Welfare benefits advice, incorporating the latest benefit advice • Welfare benefits applications service • Disability advice • Housing advice • Debt, incorporating insolvency service • Tribunal service • Family Law Drop in – no appointments necessary. For more information call Maltby Town Council on 01709 814060
MTC Gala
Maltby Town Council will be holding a Gala on the Manor Field on Saturday August 3, 2013. If you would like to participate whether as an individual, a charity, a community association, a business – perhaps wanting to have a stall or would like to help with the organisation of the event then please contact the Town Clerk on 01709 814060.
The Campaign is going really well. However, there is still much more to be done and we are looking for more Rotherham people and community groups to get involved in the coming months.
Council Surgeries
Lesley Dabell, Chief Executive of Age UK Rotherham said: "It's hard to imagine a day when you don't see anyone - no phone call, no email, no text. For thousands of older people in Rotherham that is their reality, every single day of their lives. Words are one thing, actions are another. That's why we need everyone in Rotherham to come forward and give their time, their money or whatever they can to help end loneliness for older people in our Borough."
Rotherham Borough Councillors:
If you would like to know more about how you can get involved visit the Rotherham Less Lonely Campaign on www.rotherhamlesslonely.org or ring Age UK Rotherham on (01709) 835214. If you are an older person affected by loneliness and would like some help, please contact Age UK Rotherham on (01709) 835214.

Local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
For many years the Neighbourhood Watch scheme has been a successful crime prevention initiative, but it offers much more in building community spirit and a belief in the ability to tackle local problems. Based at Wickersley Community Centre on Bawtry Road, just such a group covers the Bramley, Wickersley, Flanderwell, Brecks and Stag areas. This very active group, which meets quarterly, currently consists of over 35 co-ordinators each covering between 6 and 60 households. New members are always welcome, because of course the greater the number of active members, the more successful the scheme. The group carry out various activities to reduce crime in the community including the sharing of local intelligence on criminal activity. They also produce two newsletters a year and invite talks by police officers and other local agencies. Interested members of the community are actively encouraged to get in touch by calling: 01709 545722
The Great Rush Around Rotherham
Two great Rotherham groups are joining forces to raise money for a number of charities. Rotherham Rotary Club and Rush to walk are planning the “Rush Around Rotherham”. The walks are for anyone who would like to do their bit, whether fit or not. The walk starts at just a 3 miles to a whopping 24 miles for the more adventurous. All this is to raise
money for local charities that have made the difference to a number of people and their families. The charities that will benefit from this fund raiser are Bluebell Wood, Rotherham Hospice, South Yorkshire Ambulance and many more. The walk will start in Rotherham Town centre on the 19th May, For more information or an entry form please visit www.rushtowalk.com
Bramley Parish Council Update.
The tree planting along Flash Lane and Sandy Lane has begun and has been a big success. The council are planning to start planting along Ranworth Road in May, and will then continue in the autumn. The New Austin Drive Allotment Association in Bramley are currently looking for funding to restore the wasteland back to its former glory. They are trying to spread the word about fundraising events they are having, and are currently contacting local companies for grants or assistance. They have plots available with no waiting list, and prices start from £20 per year. They are also planning a garden area in memory of all the people who have worked the land in times gone by. For More information connect with them on facebook. www.facebook.com/AustenDriveAllotmentAssociation
Hellaby Centenary Hall
On Saturday 18th May from 11-1pm a family summer fayre will be held. There will be a variety of stalls, games (weather permitting) and refreshments. Every-one welcome. The community Group will be holding their AGM on 14th May at 7.15pm in Centenary Hall.
Food Bank Opens in Maltby
It is perhaps a sad indictment of society in 2013 that Spotlight on S66 informs the community of the opening of a new food bank in Maltby. At a time when more and more families and individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to feed themselves properly, the UK food industry continues to produce and waste huge amounts of perfectly good food, much of which ends up in landfill. Thanks to organisations like Food Aware, an attempt to address this imbalance is being made. Food Aware is a not for profit social enterprise committed to redistribution of surplus food stocks to the most vulnerable people. The Maltby Food Bank, located on Addison Road, opens every Wednesday between 11am and 1pm. The objective is to supply eligible applicants with an eat well box containing a range of healthy surplus foods at a reduced price of just £2.50. Recipients will also be sign-posted towards other services that may be of help in improving their situation. Eligibility is based on need and aims to improve diet for the most disadvantaged people. Food Aware have launched similar operations in neighbouring communities which have rapidly gained popularity and community support. Anyone who is able to help in any way by donating surplus foods of their own are welcome to do so by calling at the Addison Road location or further information see the the Food Aware website at: http://www.foodawarecic.org.uk

The dog will certainly need to go to the vet to check out for possible hidden illness. Maybe something simple like matted fur that is pulling his skin and causing stress. Maybe a wound that is laying unseen under the fur, this could be painful for the dog and could be abscessing, so when he brushes against almost anything it hurts him. Problems with a dogs tooth can also cause a change in a dog’s mood, sometimes very quickly and often badly, so get to see a vet with the dog concerned, as there may be many factors to consider, and best rectified quickly.

May Day PRQWKO\ IRFXV
PRQWKO\
)2&86 0D\ 'D\
The first day of the month of May is historically known as May Day. Celebrations have been carried out in England for over 2000 years, being a traditional day of festivities associated with the beginning of springtime. It probably originated as a roman festival to enjoy the coming of summer after a long winter season. Popular activities include dancing around a Maypole which has coloured ribbons hanging from the top and dancers (often young children) form patterns down the pole with a complex sequence of movements around it. Crowning a May Queen is also a fun activity and she will often sit at the front of a parade wearing a white gown to symbolise purity and of course a lovely crown or tiara. It is her job to start the May Day celebrations. Indeed it was convenient in days past to give farm labourers a day off, as seeding would have been completed by this date and now we have a special bank holiday in May where we can all enjoy these springtime treats.

Spotlight readers now have the chance to learn more about strokes and make a difference during May which is Action on Stroke Month. I have been pleased to speak to the Stroke Association to see how the land lies. I was told that a stroke is a ‘brain attack’ which occurs because of a clot or a bleed in the brain, causing brain cells to die. Although it’s one of the UK’s biggest killers and leading causes of disability, many people don’t understand it. We never think it could happen to us but it can happen to anyone. The lean looking Andrew Marr of the BBC, who is only 53, had a major stroke on 8th January although he is now out of hospital. He is someone we would not normally think of as ‘someone likely to have a stroke’. 28
Here in Rotherham, there are nearly 5,000 people living with the effects of stroke. High blood pressure is the biggest cause, and it affects almost a quarter (24%) of the local population. There are many reasons for this, some genetic and some due to diet and otherwise but the risks can be reduced and we can all help people who have had strokes. Julia MacLeod, Head of Operations for Stroke Association Yorkshire, told me that: “Through Action on Stroke Month, we’re building the awareness of stroke and the impact it has, reaching out to stroke survivors to show we’re here for them, and celebrating the achievements of stroke survivors on their road to recovery. We’re inviting people in Rotherham and district to join us by volunteering, fundraising, taking part or running events, and joining our campaigning network.”

Care and Companionship in Rotherham
This year, the charity is highlighting the emotional impact of stroke, with the launch of its report, Feeling Overwhelmed. This survey of over 2,700 stroke survivors and carers across the UK found that the emotional effects of stroke can be just as devastating as the physical ones, and yet are often underestimated and overlooked. Most stroke survivors and carers are affected emotionally by their stroke as it is a major trauma, but for some, it becomes a problem and leads to stress, anxiety, depression or affects their personal relationships. This is consistent with research in other health fields which suggest that, for example, loneliness also has an important impact on physical health. The Stroke Association survey found that 55% of stroke survivors fear another stroke
and this robs them of their confidence. It found that stroke affects families; two thirds of carers said they had experienced difficulties in their relationships as a result of stroke, and that caring for someone who has had a stroke gets harder as time goes by. I was pleased to learn that, fortunately for people in Rotherham, there are services available to help stroke survivors adjust to life after stroke, and these care services are designed to work well together, providing a smooth journey for local people after their stroke. The Stroke Association’s Stroke Support Service, funded by Rotherham Clinical Commissioning Group (the new NHS/hospital structure), provides information and support to help stroke survivors CONTINUED ON PAGE 30>>>

and their families cope with any practical and emotional difficulties. The service works with hospital stroke teams and other health professionals to support people in their transition from hospital to home and onwards. Staff give advice on how to prevent another stroke, provide information on relevant local organisations, and work closely with local stroke and carers groups. The Stroke Support Service also helps stroke survivors enjoy various social and work-related opportunities and to set personal goals, whether that is returning to work, catching a bus unaided, volunteering, or learning a new hobby. I can personally vouch for the hard work they carry out locally and of course there are never enough resources to meet all the potential demand. Stroke survivors are supported as they are

helped to regain confidence, skills and independence. So this is invaluable work. Julia added that: “The Stroke Association wants to change the world for people affected by stroke. It supports stroke survivors to make the best possible recovery; campaigns to improve stroke care and get stroke the attention it deserves; and funds research to develop new treatments and ways of preventing stroke.” I was pleased to hear that so far over 600 organisations, hospitals, companies, stroke clubs and individuals have signed up to Action on Stroke Month. The charity has produced a booklet You’re not alone, for people affected by stroke who want information on where they can find help. To download it, and see what’s happening in the area, you can join the campaigner’s network, or receive a free Action Pack. It is full of ideas and how to order free materials like posters and bunting but above all it helps get people talking about the subject. Care and Companionship in Rotherham preparation time and the training. The 1 year process flew by How To Become A Foster Carer and almost seems like a dream now.
SPOT LIGHT
By An Anonymous Foster Carer
Myself and my wife were passed as foster carers at the end of last year and now that we are a few months into our fostering career I felt that it would be a good time to reflect on our journey. Last month I shared my thoughts on our motivation to foster. This month I want to briefly look at the application and assesment process, and how to become a foster carer. Once we’d made the decision to apply we made a phone call around Christmas 2011 and our first placement arrived almost 1 year later. After the holiday period was over we received a phone call from the RMBC fostering recruitment team. We were immediately put at ease and were asked a number of questions about ourselves and our motivation to foster, and soon our first home visit was organised. After a few visits and calls we found ourselves on a 2 day training event on saturdays. We had a great chance to meet other foster carers and learn more about the process. We were accepted past the training and then our assessment period began. We were given a time scale of around 6 months and we then booked weekly visits from our social worker. The whole process was very rewarding but also quite challenging at times. The aim was two fold. We were finding out more about ourselves and if fostering was right for us, and our social worker was able to build up through the visits, references and interviews a very clear and concise picture of who we are and how we would cope as carers. This all provided the basis for a report that was presented to the fostering panel, where we were ultimately interviewed and approved as foster carers. It sounds a difficult process, however with hindsight I can see that we needed the
I want to encourage you to give some thought to if you could be the difference in a child's life. If you are interested in fostering in rotherham contact the RMBC fostering team on 01709 823976 or see www.rotherham.gov.uk/fostering for more information.
