A day outdoors soaking up the sun’s rays is many people’s idea of the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon. On such days, a periodic retreat indoors into an air conditioned home can offer some much-needed relief from the heat. HVAC systems are worth their weight in gold during the dog days of summer. Of course, such systems must be replaced from time to time. Learning to recognize the signs of a fading HVAC system can help homeowners replace their units before they cease working, saving everyone the uncomfortable ordeal of being stuck at home without cool air on hot summer days. Weak air flow An HVAC unit operating at peak capacity produces a strong flow of air through the vents of a home. The experts at Select Home Warranty note that when the air flow from the vent is weak, this could be a warning sign of a damaged AC compressor or blocked or damaged vents. Damaged vents might be replaceable, but issues with the AC unit might require a replacement. That’s especially so if the unit is old. Repairs might be possible, but it might be more cost-effective to replace an aging unit rather than commit to costly repairs. Excessive moisture around the unit Excessive moisture around the unit may indicate that its refrigerant is leaking. In addition, Home Select Warranty notes that large pools of water around the unit could contribute to mold
Interior temperature If your home is not quite the respite from summer heat that it once was, despite the AC being on and running, then this could be indicative of a fading system that may need to be replaced. However, the home warranty firm American Home Shield® notes that hot interior temperatures also may be indicative of clogged ductwork. Qualified HVAC technicians may be able to fix clogged ductwork without replacing the AC unit. If the issue persists even after ducts have been cleaned and unclogged, then a new unit might be homeowners’ best bet. Foul odor Sometimes the nose knows best when an AC unit needs to be replaced. Unusual odors emanating from the vents when the AC is on suggest that the unit is distributing mold or mildew throughout the home. The Florida-based heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical experts at Cool Today note that a moldy or mildew-like smell coming from the vents could indicate a host of issues, including a dirty evaporator coil, a clogged drain line or leaky air ducts. Each of these issues can be fixed, but homeowners must weigh the cost of fixing them versus the cost of replacing an aging unit. Come the dog days of summer, homeowners want a reliable AC unit to cool their homes. Recognizing signs of a malfunctioning AC unit is a good first step toward ensuring homes remain cool, relaxing respites from the heat this summer.

The United States flag was first imagined after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Continental Congress authorized creation of the first national flag on June 14, 1777. It was decided that the flag should have 13 stripes, alternating red and white, to represent the original 13 colonies, and that the new union be represented by 13 white stars in a blue field to signify a “new constellation.” Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is most often credited with the original design. Today there are 50 stars on the flag to represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes still represent the 13 British colonies that became the first states. While this may be common knowledge, Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, may not be as widely known. The code dictates that the flag is to be treated with respect and proper etiquette. The code is extensive, but the following guidelines can help private individuals interested in displaying their flags do so in accordance with the law. • Flags should only be displayed in public from sunrise to sunset, unless the flag can be properly illuminated during darkness. In this instance, it may be displayed at all times. • When displayed with other flags, such as on a single staff or lanyard, the U.S. flag should be above all other flags. If flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left. • State and local flags are traditionally flown lower than the American flag. • During marching ceremonies or parades with other flags, the U.S.

flag should be to the observer’s left. • The flag should be displayed at every public institution and at schools during school days. • When displayed vertically and not on a staff, the union should be on the left when observed. It should be suspended so its folds fall freely as though the flag were staffed. • The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. • The flag is often displayed at half-staff on days of mourning, including Memorial Day. The flag should first be hoisted to the peak for an instant, then lowered to half-staff position, which is half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff. • On a vehicle, the U.S. flag should be displayed from a staff firmly fixed to the chassis. It should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle. • The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. It also should never have anything placed on it. • A flag in poor condition should be destroyed with dignity, preferably by burning. Most American Legion posts and local Boy Scouts troops will have the resources to retire flags accordingly. Many will host annual flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day.

Fleas
Fighting might mean you have to treat your home and yard
Dear Cathy, The flea problem in Florida is bad. I have tried external drops, flea collars and chewables, and they do not work. My dog has been miserable. Intuitively, to put something inside of an animal to repel or kill something on the outside of the animal does not seem right. Someone from the companies that produce these products need to come to the area and find out why the fleas have become immune to their products. — Dane, Fort Lauderdale, Florida Dear Dane, I am not sure why your dog seems immune to flea preventatives, except to say that you may need to treat your home and yard as well as your dog. You can buy diatomaceous earth and spread it on your yard. It’s safe for you and your dog, but it causes fleas to dehydrate and die. Next, I would use a fogger in the house to get rid of any fleas and flea eggs. And I would bathe your dog in a dip that kills fleas. After you do all this, use a spot-on topical (the drops) on your dog. I think when you hit your flea problem from all sides, you will begin to see an improvement. Flea-infested pets can develop anemia, so please keep trying to find a way to rid your dog of these pests.

Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful words in the human vocabulary Q: My friend tried to turn my friends away from me and I said some terrible things to her, but then forgave her. Now she won’t forgive me for what I said to her. Isn’t she wrong? — F.H. A: Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful words in the human vocabulary and is best illustrated by God’s forgiveness of sin. When someone sins against us, they bear a terrible guilt. Likewise, when we refuse to forgive a wrong, we become part of the problem. When God’s people practice forgiveness, sweetness replaces harshness. We cannot force another to have a spirit of forgiveness, but we can demonstrate it by how we react. It is not always possible to mend a broken relationship. Some people refuse to accept responsibility for what they have done, always blaming someone else for what happened. Be willing to go the extra mile in an effort to be reconciled with someone who has turned against you, and remember always to pray for them. Remember to treat others as you would like to be treated (see Luke 6:31). A marvelous example of this is revealed in the life of Joseph. His brothers were jealous of him and sold him into slavery. But as the Old Testament story unfolds in Genesis 50, we see that Joseph did not hold it against them. The Lord used Joseph to save his family, and even a whole nation. Because of Joseph’s demonstration of forgiveness, he was blessed of God. If we cannot find it in our hearts to forgive within our own family, we will never exhibit this attribute of Christ with others and know God’s blessings. “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14). (This column is based on the words and writings of the late Rev. Billy Graham.)

Vitamin D supplements may reduce Risk of invasive cancer Nutrition is a popular topic of conversation, particularly among those embarking on a weight loss or maintenance plan. Individuals carefully study food macros and pore over various diets to get the most out of the foods they eat. When the end goal is simply looking good, it may be easy to forget about the other benefits of nutritious diets, including their link to overall health. Experts at Tufts Health Plan recognize that good nutrition can
reduce the risk of developing many diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers. help
The notion of “you are what you eat” still rings true. The World Health Organization indicates better nutrition means stronger immune systems, fewer illnesses and better overall health. However, according to the National Resource Center on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Aging, one in four older Americans suffers from poor nutrition. And this situation is not exclusive to the elderly. A report examining the global burden of chronic disease published in The Lancet found poor diet contributed to 11 million deaths worldwide — roughly 22 percent of deaths among adults — and poor quality of life. Low intake of fruits and whole grains and high intake of sodium are the leading risk factors for illness in many countries. Common nutrition problems can arise when one favors convenience and routine over balanced meals that truly fuel the body

Doesn’t Smell Like a Hospital
The pleasant scents and other ambience are part of an overall design to create a patient experience that is second to none for residents of the Treasure Coast and beyond. “Clinical care is of the utmost importance, but patients and families need a place where they feel supported and cared for,” said Martin Shimko, RN, patient experience coordinator for the 174-bed community hospital in Sebastian, Florida. Shimko should know. As a registered nurse, he has tended to patients at their bedsides and reassured their loved ones during his 29-year career in health care. Much of Sebastian River Medical Center’s success in patient experience is employee ownership. Shimko precedes his references to specific departments with the word, “my” as in “my emergency department,” “my lobby,” or “my diagnostic department.” Shimko’s reference not only reflect his sense of ownership, but also the sense of pride and teamwork felt by the entire staff at Sebastian River Medical Center. Since he arrived last year, Shimko has maintained a laser-like focus on what those in the health care industry refer to as “the patient experience.” The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality defines patient experience as “encompassing the range of interactions that patients have with the health care system, including their care from health plans, and from doctors, nurses, and staff in hospitals, physician practices, and other health care facilities.” The goal is patient-centered care. Studies have shown that positive patient experiences ultimately lead to improved
healing, more favorable outcomes for patients, and increased efficiency across the health care system. The range of interactions during the patient experience can include those things we can’t physically see. Smell is a powerful sense and can create a range of emotions in people, including having a calming effect. “Being in the emergency department can be stressful, and we wanted to reduce the stress level,” s a i d Shimko. “We purchased a system, very similar to those you experience in theme parks, that pumps the smell of lavender throughout the emergency department to have a calming effect during what can be a stressful situation.” Shimko adds, “Vanilla has also been shown to reduce anxiety in MRI facilities, decreasing feelings of claustrophobia and tension. One hospital saw a significant decrease in the number of MRI patients requiring sedation and a 50% decrease in cancellations.” Landscaping also has a substantial effect on healing. A study suggests that visiting and viewing landscaping at hospitals accelerates patient’s recovery from surgery. Sebastian River Medical Center gave attention to detail when it came to the outside landscaping of the new addition, as well as the enclosed courtyard located beyond the lobby. Not only do these improvements help patients andfamilies at Sebastian River Medical Center, but the staff benefits, too. The same study on landscaping showed that it also
decreased the staff’s mental fatigue and lifted their spirits. Shimko also knows, without doubt, that taste drives satisfaction. He regularly samples the food cooked up by hospital chefs, who, in addition to preparing food sent to patient rooms, also cater special events at the hospital. “We do everything we can to make sure the food is the perfect temperature when arrives in the patient’s room,’ he said. “No one enjoys a cold meal.” However, dietary restrictions may mean that a patient with cardiac issues won’t be getting salty food. “We always follow doctor’s orders,” he explained. Shimko’s work, and all the efforts of the employees at Sebastian River Medical Center, is reflected in Google patient reviews. The hospital has been seeing many positive and uplifting reviews on a regular basis. The staff is happy to not only have their efforts recognized but to know they are leaving a positive imprint on the lives of their patients. “Everyone I came in contact with was friendly and caring. I wouldn't go anywhere else to get care when I' m sick! I even had other leaders in the hospital visit me to make sure my experience was what I expected! Thank you for the caring behavior exhibited by all your staff!!” – Feedback received from a member of the Sebastian River Medical Center Community Shimko isn’t done yet. Next time you visit Sebastian River Medical Center, listen. You might soon hear some light jazz playing softly in the background. “I promise, it will not sound like elevator music,” affirms Shimko.

he scent of lavender greets patients and as soon as they pass through the doors of the emergency department. In other areas, warm, inviting whiffs of vanilla waft through the air. In the main lobby, part of the hospital’s recent 90,000 square-foot expansion, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee beckons visitors to grab a cup of joe to enjoy indoors or head out to the lushly landscaped courtyard to sip in the sunshine.
