Yes we changed the name of the magazine! Bayfoot Bay Living is still part of the Community Values Magazine family, but we just love the direction the magazine is moving toward. Localized to Barefoot Bay residents and surround neighbors. The majority of the residents in the zip code 32976 is by and large from Barefoot Bay, and if you ask any one headed to this area, they say, the Barefoot Bay area, not Micco. Look forward to more localized news from this area as we grow in the direction you all have asked us to do. Thank you for all the input, and we hear you loud and clear.

Average
timelines for popular
renovations
Home renovation projects are significant undertakings. Working with skilled and experienced contractors can ensure projects go smoothly and are completed promptly. Timing is a big consideration for homeowners as they begin renovating their homes, and the home improvement experts at HomeAdvisor note that the following are some general timelines for popular renovation projects. • Home addition: Short of a full-scale demolition and rebuild, home additions are the most time-consuming projects homeowners can undertake. HomeAdvisor notes that its survey of customers who recently completed home addition projects reported that the average time from start to finish was between three and four months. Certain variables, including the scale of the project and the local permits process, can extend the time it takes to complete a home addition. • Kitchen remodel: Scale is a big factor to consider when estimating the time it takes to complete various home improvement projects, and kitchen remodels are no exception. Some HomeAdvisor users reported projects taking as long as four months, though the average time reported was roughly six weeks. Projects that require major overhauls like rearranging
the plumbing and moving walls will likely take longer than more cosmetic projects that are limited to replacing cabinets and countertops. • Bathroom remodel: More than 1,000 homeowners surveyed by HomeAdvisor reported that bathroom remodels took about 4.5 weeks from start to finish. Small-scale remodels that focus on painting the walls a fresh color and replacing existing tiles can be completed in less than two weeks. But like with kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels that involve replacing plumbing fixtures and removing walls figure to take much longer than that. • Siding installation: HomeAdvisor users report that new siding projects take roughly two weeks from start to finish. That estimate is the same regardless of which materials homeowners are replacing and installing. • Replacement windows: Homeowners who want to replace all the windows in their home can expect such a project to take roughly three weeks. HomeAdvisor notes that such a timeline need not concern homeowners worried that they will be forced to brave the elements during the length of the project. Much of a contractors’ time during a window replacement project will be spent on upfront measuring and then ensuring a tight fit once the windows have been installed.

Invisibility, leprechauns and national pride tied to wearing

Green

Part of what makes celebrating St. Patrick’s Day so enjoyable is the scores of traditions surrounding the holiday. The month of March ushers in parades, festive foods, lively music, and as much green attire as a person can handle. As ubiquitous as it is each March, green attire has not always been symbolic of St. Patrick’s Day or Ireland. In fact, earlier depictions of St. Patrick had him royally clothed in a rich shade of blue. Some ancient Irish flags even sported the color blue. According to National Geographic, the color green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day in the 18th century, when the shamrock became a national symbol of Ireland. The color of the shamrock and Ireland’s natural landscape forever linked green to St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and the Emerald Isle. There are reasons for donning green clothing on St. Patrick’s Day. If a person isn’t in green, he or she just may get pinched. According to Irish folklore, leprechauns wore green, and if anyone else wore the color that individual would be invisible to leprechauns. Leprechauns are ornery sorts who like to pinch anyone they can see. Therefore, by wearing green clothing, a person is sure to avoid a painful tweak. It’s not only the leprechauns who might do the pinching. Celebrants are inclined to pinch people who don’t wear green as a reminder that leprechauns might sneak up on them at any time. Beyond shamrocks and leprechauns, other people are inclined to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day as a symbol of good luck and to honor their Irish ancestry. According to Brian Witt, the cultural exhibits coordinator for Milwaukee Irish fest, Irish Americans would wear green as a reminder that they are nationalists first and foremost. The Irish flag colors are green, white and orange. The green symbolizes Irish nationalism, the orange represents the “Orangemen” of Northern Ireland, which is an Irish Protestant political society, and the white symbolizes peace. Green is an integral color during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and it is tied to many different traditions. www.CommunityValuesMagazines.com
Why do people
Kiss
International tourism is big business. While much of the world was forced to stay home during the global COVID-19 pandemic, prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus international tourism was thriving. A report from the World Tourism Organization in January 2020 found that 1.5 billion international tourist arrivals were recorded across the globe in 2019. That marked a 4 percent increase over the previous year. Ireland is a popular tourist destination for people across the globe. A country with a rich history that is steeped in tradition, Ireland annually welcomes people from all over the globe. Tourist attractions abound throughout the Emerald Isle, and few are as popular as the famed Blarney Stone. When visiting the Blarney Stone, which is located on the grounds of Blarney Castle, visitors are urged to kiss the stone. But why? The exact origins of the tradition of kissing the Blarney Stone are unknown, but History.com notes the practice dates back several centuries. Legend suggests kissing the stone helps people become more eloquent and persuasive, and indeed numerous accomplished orators, including former British prime minister Win-
The Blarney Stone is a block of Carboniferous limestone built into the battlements of Blarney Castle, Blarney, about 8 kilometres from Cork, Ireland. According to legend, kissing the stone endows the kisser with the gift of the gab. The stone was set into a tower of the castle in 1446.
ston Churchill, are among the millions of people who have kissed the stone over the centuries. Kissing the stone is no small feat, though it has become easier to do so in recent years. Prior to 2000, visitors to Blarney Castle who wanted to kiss the stone had to pull off an acrobatic feat without much support, leaning over backwards while lying down on their backs as the upper part of their bodies hung over the parapet’s edge. However, guardrails were installed in 2000 to give visitors something to grab onto as they lean over the edge and kiss the stone. Visitors to Ireland who want to kiss the Blarney Stone can expect to wait to do so. While the Blarney Castle gardens remained open to visitors during the pandemic, the tradition of kissing the stone was closed. And when that tradition is allowed once again, visitors should expect a line, as an estimated 400,000 people kiss the stone each year. C V M

Swimming Pool Landscape Ideas! Backyard pools provide a way to cool off and enjoy a taste of luxury without having to travel. Backyard pools provided even more convenience and a welcome respite in 2020, as many public pools were closed in response to social distancing restrictions put in place during the pandemic. After installing pools, many homeowners realize that touching up the landscaping around the pool can provide the finishing touch to their backyard retreats. Not all landscaping is the same, and homeowners should choose plants that look beautiful, are tolerant to pool splash-out and won’t outgrow the area. The home and garden resource The Spruce notes that a plant that is attractive at two feet tall can grow rapidly and drop leaves or other debris into the pool. When selecting options for pool landscaping, there are some considerations to keep in mind: • Choose plants that will provide privacy. • Know which kind of climate a plant needs prior to purchasing it. Tropical plants may be fitting poolside, but will they endure when the season is over? • Design according to the theme of the home, as plants should
complement the existing style. Modern foliage may not blend well with a home styled after a traditional English cottage. • Decide whether you can accept spreading or trailing plants

that can cascade over retaining walls and other infrastructure. • Look at trees that won’t drop too many leaves, flowers or fruit into the water. • Think about having layers of plants to soften the landscape, which can make a small pool seem bigger and more luxurious, indicates the landscaping company Earth Development, Inc. • Don’t overlook the possibility of a lawn abutting pavers or concrete surrounding a pool, as it can soften the edges and keep spaces open and inviting. • Incorporate herbs or fragrant plants, which can transform a pool day into a spa experience. Consider lowmaintenance lavender as an option. Pool landscaping must marry a variety of different features and plant requirements. As a result, a professional consultation may be the route to take. Landscape architects will have the know-how to select plant varieties that will be tolerant, beautiful and fulfill homeowners’
wishes. Backyard pools can make a backyard retreat that much more enjoyable. Landscaping offers the softness and beauty that adds a finishing touch to poolside retreats.

‘would jump at the chance’ to make The Queen’s Gambit season two Culture Bang Showbiz Anya Taylor-Joy ‘would jump at the chance’ to make The Queen’s Gambit season two Anya Taylor-Joy ‘would jump at the chance’ to make The Queen’s Gambit season two Bang Showbiz March 1, 2021Anya Taylor-Joy (Bang Showbiz) Anya Taylor-Joy “would jump at the chance” to make a second series of ‘The Queen’s Gambit’. The 24-year-old actress starred as Beth Harmon in season one of the hit Netflix series and speaking after the show’s success at the Golden Globes on Sunday (02.28.21), Anya confirmed she’d relish the chance to reprise the role. She said: “Not to disappoint anybody, but we just never thought about it. It was always a sapling to tree transition. You see her grow, you leave her in a good place. So we were genuinely surprised when people were like, ‘Where’s season two?’”
Anya admitted she’d like to make another series of the show after loving her time on set. The actress – who plays the role of a chess prodigy in the series – told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “I adore the entire team that made it and I would jump at the chance to work with them again.” Anya won the Best Performance by an Actress, Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television accolade at the Golden Globes, and she admitted to loving the complexities of her onscreen character. She explained: “One of my favourite things about her was because she was raised in this interesting way, she never really saw her gender as something that told her what she could or couldn’t want. And I really enjoyed playing that, especially in the context of the ’60s. “So I think more than playing a strong woman, I feel very honoured to have played such an interesting, complex person. And I’m very proud of that.” The actress also appreciates the feedback she’s received from fans about the show. She said: “I’m just so grateful that people connected to this story and connected with that as much as they did because she means so much to me. “Whenever you do a project, it kind of feels like you’re throwing your baby out of a window and when people catch it, that’s just the best feeling in the world.”

A simple, crispy-topped strawberry-rhubarb crisp that you can make any time of year For the filling: • 1 pound fresh rhubarb, trimmed and cut into ½-inch pieces, or frozen rhubarb, thawed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (3 1/2 cups) • 12 ounces fresh strawberries, hulled and chopped coarse, or frozen strawberries, thawed and chopped coarse (2 cups) • 1 1/4 cups packed (8 3/4 ounces) light brown sugar • 2 tablespoons cornstarch • 1/8 teaspoon table salt 1. For the topping: Whisk flour, panko, sugar, salt and cinnamon together in bowl. Add melted butter and stir until no dry spots of flour remain and mixture forms clumps. Refrigerate until ready to use. 2. For the filling: Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 375 F. Toss all ingredients in large bowl until thoroughly combined. Transfer to a 10-inch oven-safe skillet. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until the fruit has released enough liquid to be mostly submerged, the rhubarb is just beginning to break down and the juices have thickened, about 8 minutes. Remove skillet from heat. 3. Squeeze the topping into large clumps with your hands. Crumble the topping into pea-size pieces and sprinkle evenly over the filling. Bake until the topping is browned and the filling is bubbling around the sides of the skillet, about 20 minutes. Let cool for 15 minutes. Serve. Recipe notes: If using frozen strawberries, there’s no need to thaw them completely; you can chop them as soon as they’re soft enough. If using frozen strawberries and frozen rhubarb, you may need to increase the stovetop cooking time by up to 4 minutes. Depending on the amount of trimming required, you may need to buy more than 1 pound of rhubarb to ensure that you end up with 3 1/2 cups. Serve with vanilla ice cream. www.facebook.com/CommunityValuesMagazines

Around this time every year, when fresh rhubarb’s season is coming to an end, we start to anticipate going months without one half of our favorite fruit-dessert filling. But with this crisp, which works with both fresh and frozen rhubarb, we can get that bright, tart, floral combination any time of the year. Even better, the recipe is literally easier than pie. Making a crisp takes little more than stirring together a topping in a bowl, tossing cut-up fruit with some sugar, and throwing it all in the oven. But baker beware! Follow the wrong recipe (or worse, no recipe at all) and you might end up with a strawberryrhubarb soup and a soggy topping — decidedly not crisp. That’s the real lesson of this carefully tested recipe: Different batches of strawberries and rhubarb will exude varying amounts of moisture when combined with sugar and baked. So how do you create a recipe that will result in the perfect (slightly jammy but never stodgy) texture every time? The simplest answer is to cook the filling briefly on the stovetop, over moderately high heat, to coax out the excess liquid, reduce it, and thicken it to the consistency you’re after. Then you can top the fruit and quickly brown the crisp in the oven. Applying this simple technique also ensures that your topping remains crisp. And we found that the crispiest topping came from the inclusion of an unexpected ingredient: panko breadcrumbs. There was a fair amount of debate on whether we were developing a recipe for a crisp or a crumble (and debate on the difference between the two). This topping ended all confusion on the matter. A crisp topping should be crispy, and panko is an excellent way to give the topping a lasting, light, airy crispness. Try it and see. Strawberry-Rhubarb Crisp ~ Serves 6 For the topping: •3/4 cup (3 3/4 ounces) all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs • 1/4 cup packed (1 3/4 ounces) light brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon table salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

If you’ve experienced COVID and have cause
to believe that you have some
immunity, if the opportunity arises to get the vaccine,
don’t waste it. Here’s why.
COVID-19 infections produce immunity against the disease for at least three months. When it comes to the vaccine, health experts still don’t know how long immunity lasts. So, what’s the difference between people who’ve been infected with COVID-19, people who’ve been inoculated, and people who got their shot after infection? A recent study shows that a large
percentage of people who suffered from COVID-19 developed antibodies for the disease, with 88% of respondents having antibodies for at least six months. There’s also been some cases of people who’ve suffered from COVID-19 who have gotten their shots and have experienced strong side effects as a result, reminiscent of the symptoms they had when they were first exposed to the disease. “The way my head hurt and the way my body ached was the same headache and body ache I had when I had Covid,” Shannon Romano, a molecular biologist who was infected in March and recently had her first shot, told the New York Times. “I think one vaccination should be sufficient,” said virologist Florian Kramer. “This would also spare individuals from unnecessary pain when getting the second dose and it would free up additional vaccine doses.” Not everyone shares this opinion, even if they recognize the existence of natural immunity. Data shows that COVID-19 survivors who get their vaccine have more antibodies than people who’ve only been inoculated, which has then made people wonder what provides more protection. Naomi Allen, chief scientist of UK Biobank, explained to the Huffington Post that the science community isn’t sure about how immunity relates to antibodies, explaining that there are some pitfalls with natural immunity. There have been plenty of cases of reinfection, particularly when accounting for new strains of the virus. RELATED: US COVID-19 Cases Are Dropping — Here’s Why Per the HuffPo: “Vaccines, on the other hand, are believed to induce stronger and longer lasting immunity. They’re also a lot safer than waiting to catch the virus for the first time – or waiting to catch it again, as we don’t know how common reinfections are.”
18 CVM
Vaccines are different than a regular COVID-19 infection, which in turn, vary a lot in intensity depending on the patient. While both the disease and the vaccine provide immunity (and when paired together result in a mix of two different reactions that may result in strong side effects), the protection that the vaccine provides is undeniable and scientifically accurate. Even if you’ve experienced COVID and have cause to believe that you have some immunity, if the opportunity arises to get the vaccine, don’t waste it.

Experiment with growing Foodies find it hard to beat vine-ripened tomatoes plucked right out of a garden. Other edibles, such as fresh lettuce for a small luncheon salad or a handful of fresh parsley right out of a pot to add to a marinade, also add a lot to meals. The convenience and flavor of freshly grown edibles propels many home gardeners to grow produce and herb gardens in their yards. But those short on outdoor space may be happy to learn that many edibles grow equally as well indoors as outdoors. Many people maintain comfortable temperatures between 70 and 75 F in their homes all year long, which can be the ideal condition for growing an array of edibles no matter the season. For those with homes that receive ample sunlight (or if homeowners are willing to supplement with artifical light), growing conditions can be even stronger. An indoor garden can comprise as much space as a homeowner is willing to devote. Shelving can maximize vertical areas and enable gardeners to include even more planting room.

Keep these tips in mind when cultivating indoor edible gardens. • Tomatoes: Tomatoes should be reserved for the sunniest spot in a home or one where additional UV light can be used. Tomatoes will need pots or containers that are roughly six inches deep with ample drainage. Keep in mind that tomatoes grown indoors will be smaller than outside fruits, and you may want to consider plum or cherry tomato varieties. • Cucumbers: For those fresh salad mixes, cucumbers can be grown indoors in large pots so they can have space to develop. Be sure to put a climbing structure in the pot so that vines can grow vertically, and place cucumbers in a sunny, warm location. • Carrots: Natural Living Ideas says that if you have between four and five hours of bright sunlight per day and deep pots with loose, well-draining soil, you can cultivate carrots indoors. Carrots prefer cooler spots for sweet yields. Plus, carrot greens can make for attractive indoor decorations. • Microgreens: Swiss chard, basil, dill, kale, and other greens can provide nutrient-dense additions to any meals. These plants do not require a lot of depth to a container and can thrive on a sunny windowsill in a room that’s between 60 and 70 F. • Scallions: These plants of the onion family add flavor to many recipes. When scallions are grown at home, gardeners can snip off the greens as needed. Choose deep pots so the scallions can establish strong root systems. • Turnips: Large, deep pots are needed to grow turnips, says Loyal Gardener. You can grow them from seeds and be harvesting turnips in about two months. Homeowners or apartment dwellers can experiment with different types of edibles indoors. The result can be fresh foods no matter the season.

Exterior lighting can abiance to a property
CVM
The value of the right lighting in a home is undeniable. Lighting can instantly transform a room and create the ambiance homeowners are looking to establish. Though it might be mostly seen as a way to create mood inside a home, lighting also can do much for lawns and gardens. Backyards have come a long way over the last several decades. Once reserved as play areas for children and stomping grounds for the family dog, backyards have become oases for homeowners and their families. Outdoor living areas are wildly popular, and no such area is complete without exterior lighting. In fact, a recent report from the National Association of Home Builders found that 85 percent of home buyers want exterior lighting, making it the second most desired outdoor feature (patios topped that list). Exterior lighting can have a dramatic effect on landscaping, and estimates from the online financial resource Kiplinger.com suggest such lighting is inexpensive, with installation averaging roughly $67 per fixture. When installing exterior lighting around their landscapes, homeowners can keep various tips in mind to create a relaxing, awe-inspiring mood on their properties at night. • Consider uplights. Uplights are installed in the ground and direct light up at a tree, focusing on its trunk or canopy. This creates a dramatic effect that makes it possible to enjoy majestic trees at night just like you might when spending time in the yard during the day. • Focus on trees. Many homeowners already have exterior lighting lining their walkways and patios, but focusing on trees can create an entirely different look. Though it’s possible to install exterior tree lighting on your own, landscaping professionals with lighting experience know which fixtures will pair most effectively with the trees around your property and how to arrange them for maximum effect. • Opt for warm light. Warm white light creates an inviting feel around the property. The exterior lighting experts at Utah Lights acknowledge that choice of lighting is up to homeowners but also note that, in situations with lower levels of ambient light, such as in exterior lights around a property, people typically prefer warmer light. That’s because warm light tends to be easier on the eyes and directs attention to the features of the landscape, which is many homeowners’ goal when installing exterior lighting in their yards. • Utilize a timer. Modern exterior lighting timers make it easier than ever to control the lights outside a home. Many such timers even adjust for the changing seasons and the shifting hours of www.CommunityValuesMagazines.com
daylight. That means homeowners shouldn’t have to tinker with the timer once it’s set. Exterior lighting can add significant appeal to a property without breaking the bank.

Did you know? Telemonitoring tied to fewer heart attacks, lower medical costs! If your doctor or pharmacist offers a service to monitor blood pressure measurements you send from home (called telemonitoring), consider taking advantage of it. Past research has shown that telemonitoring -- often paid for by Medicare -- may help you reduce your blood pressure. And a study published online Aug. 31, 2020, by Hypertension suggests telemonitoring is also associated with a long-term reduction in heart attacks, strokes, and medical costs. The recent study is a follow-up to a randomized controlled trial from 2013 that divided 450 people into two groups: those who received routine primary care, and those who received a year of telemonitoring services with a pharmacist who helped manage their treatment. People in the telemonitoring group had lower blood pressure for up to two years afterward, compared with people who received routine care. In the recently published follow-up, which followed the same participants for five years, researchers found there were about half as many heart attacks, strokes, and hospitalizations in the telemonitoring group as there were in the group that received routine care. Because there were fewer cardiovascular problems, people in the telemonitoring group also saved an estimated $1,900 each in medical costs.
Did you know? BPA now linked to premature death
22
BPA now linked to premature death Bisphenol A (BPA), used to make some plastics and epoxy resins, has made headlines for years because of its association with an increased risk for obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease in humans. Now high levels of BPA exposure have been linked to an increased risk for premature death from any cause, according to a study published online Aug. 17, 2020, by JAMA Network Open. Scientists analyzed the survival rates of about 3,900 people who provided health information and urine samples and were then followed for 10 years. People

with the highest levels of BPA in their urine had a 51% higher risk of dying during that period, primarily from heart disease, compared with people who had the lowest levels of BPA. The findings don’t prove that BPA caused premature death, but they add to concerns about BPA’s potential toxicity. BPA and related chemicals are found in many products, such as water bottles, cups, dental sealants, paper receipts, and the linings of food and beverage cans and pipes, so it’s hard to avoid them. Simple precautions include relying less on canned foods and more on fresh foods; avoiding plastics with a 3 or 7 recycling label; microwaving food in glass or ceramic containers, not plastic; and looking for BPA-free products.
Did you know? Probiotics help relieve depression? Probiotic supplements containing helpful bacteria and yeast are marketed as a way to maintain a diverse mix of healthy gut microbes. Now, a review published online July 6, 2020, by BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health suggests that probiotic supplements may help relieve depression symptoms. Scientists evaluated seven clinical trials from the past 15 years, which tested a total of 12 different strains of helpful bacteria. One trial in the review tested a “prebiotic,” a type of plant fiber that provides food for gut bacteria. Scientists concluded that 11 of these probiotics, either alone or combined with prebiotics, were potentially useful for relieving symptoms of depression, perhaps by reducing inflammation that could affect brain function. The studies were small and short-term, but taken together, they suggest a gut-based approach to maintaining emotional well-being is worth pursuing. In the meantime, talk therapy, exercise, and medications remain the most effective approaches to treat depression. To support your gut health without expensive probiotic supplements, enjoy foods that naturally contain probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut. The prebiotic powers of whole grains also may support a healthy gut.

Tai chi or yoga?
4important differences
to determine which is best for your needs. Tai chi and yoga have many similarities. Both are gentle, lowintensity exercises that have been practiced for hundreds of years. Both are good for your mind and body (see “Tai chi and yoga benefits”). And both have been shown to be beneficial for older adults in particular. How do you choose one over the other? Several differences can influence your choice.
Tai chi and yoga benefits: Tai chi and yoga share a long list of health and wellness benefits. Both can improve your balance, flexibility, strength, mobility, mood, quality of life, range of motion, reflexes, and thinking skills. They also reduce pain and your risk of falls. How do two exercises accomplish all that? “Rather than targeting just one aspect of health -- like an aspirin for a headache -- yoga and tai chi movements address many health systems and work synergistically,” says Peter Wayne, faculty editor of the Harvard Special Health Report An Introduction to Tai Chi. 1. Flowing vs. static movements Tai chi and yoga use different types of movements to challenge your muscles and balance. Tai chi is like a graceful dance of flowing motions. As you perform a series of slow, choreographed movements, you breathe deeply, focus on body sensations, and gradually shift your weight from one pose to another. Yoga is a series of focused, mostly static (still) strengthening and stretching postures combined with breathing techniques.
2. Standing vs. sitting
24 CVM
Both tai chi and yoga can be adapted for people who want or need to sit in a chair while exercising. But generally speaking, tai chi is performed while standing. Yoga can involve standing, lying down, sitting on the floor, and kneeling on all fours. Some positions require you to bend, reach backward, or even turn upside down. These are important considerations if you don’t have access to a chair-based program and you either can’t stand for long periods or have difficulty getting up and down off the floor.
3. A lot to remember Tai chi and yoga both have an instructor who leads you through the exercises. Still, some people have trouble following or memorizing tai chi choreography. The good news: “Many modern tai chi programs have been simplified to include only a small number of movements that can be done in an easy-to-learn, repetitive manner,” explains Peter Wayne, faculty editor of the Harvard Special Health Report An www.CommunityValuesMagazines.com
Introduction to Tai Chi and director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
4. Stand-out benefits While tai chi and yoga have similar benefits, each has a particular effect that stands out in scientific studies. “Tai chi improves your balance, and that leads to a 20% to 60% reduction in falls. The exercise sharpens all of the skills you need to stay upright -leg strength, flexibility, range of motion, reflexes, and awareness of bodily sensations and mental focus,” Wayne says. Yoga appears to reduce pain -- especially back, neck, and other musculoskeletal pain. This could be from the gradual stretching and strengthening of muscles that support the back (such as the paraspinal muscles that help you bend your spine and the multifidus muscles that stabilize your vertebrae). Yoga also may reduce pain by reducing mental stress: stress tends to increase the perception of pain.
Other considerations: Choosing between yoga and tai chi often comes down to personal preference and practical considerations. “Try them and see what you like,” Wayne suggests. “You might enjoy flowing movement more than being still.” You can always let your abilities guide you. If you have memory challenges, you might want to try yoga first; if you have severe arthritis, tai chi might be an easier option than yoga. But both types of exercises can be adapted for your ability, even if you have Parkinson’s disease or other physically limiting conditions. And that makes the instructor an important consideration. “You want a teacher who will adapt protocols to ensure that they’re safe and the appropriate level of challenge for you,” Wayne says. “If you have a health condition, it can help to have an instructor who also has medical training, such as a nurse or physical therapist.” To find those experts, turn to sources you can trust, such as hospitals or academic centers. Check out exercise videos, outdoor exercise classes (stand at least six feet apart from others), or an online exercise class -on your breathing for a few minutes. Slowly begin to widen your focus. Become aware of sounds, sensations, and ideas. Allow each thought or sensation to pass without judging it as good or bad. If your mind starts to race, return your focus to your breathing. Then expand your awareness again. Try to sustain this awareness for longer periods each time you try this exercise.
The Takeaway It takes time to break old habits, and it’s okay if it’s hard to make a change and give up optimistic or pessimistic thinking. But even a little shift in your approach will improve your well-being. “We’ll all do better,” Siegel says, “if we live as though reality were real instead of being shocked by it.”

Mediterranean diet??
A Mediterraneanstyle diet is rich in vegetables, legumes, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, poultry, fish, and olive oil, and it’s associated with lower risks for heart disease and diabetes. And a “greener” version of the eating style might be even more effective, according to a small, randomized study published online Nov. 23, 2020, by the journal Heart. Researchers -some from Harvard -- recruited about 300 sedentary, middle-aged
people (mostly men) with high cholesterol or abdominal obesity and divided them into three groups. One received guidance for exercise and a healthy diet; another received exercise guidance and was assigned to eat a calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet; and one group received exercise guidance and was assigned to eat a “greener” calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet with less animalbased and more plant-based proteins (including walnuts and a type of duckweed -- an aquatic plant), plus lots of green tea. After six months, people on the “green” diet had lost more weight and inches around their middles, and had bigger drops in cholesterol, than people in the other two groups. “Green” dieters also had steeper declines in insulin resistance, inflammation markers, and diastolic blood pressure (the lower number in the measurement), compared with the other two groups.

Tasty tips If you can find toasted pistachios, skip the first step. To make this a vegetarian main course add sauteed tofu pieces and use vegetable stock. This may be prepared up to 2 hours ahead and kept at room temperature. Reheat carefully in top part of double boiler above hot water over medium heat for 10 minutes. Make this into a cold salad the next day by adding some vinaigrette to the leftover portion. Cold shrimp or chicken pieces would be a nice addition. Lemon zest adds an extra flavor component. Pistachio and Vegetable Herbed Rice and Noodles
Seriously Simple: Anyone lucky enough to taste this
St. Patrick’s Day side dish will simply love it!
I often find myself looking for side dishes that can accompany main courses without overpowering them. This is a recipe that does just that. Rice and noodles combined with toasted pistachios, leeks and zucchini is one of my favorite year-round side dishes. It also is a two-in-one dish since the vegies are already in the rice. And it is perfect for St Patrick’s Day, with lots of green peeking through the rice and noodles.

Look for long-grain rice for this recipe. It has slender grains that stay separate and fluffy after cooking, which works well for side dishes or as a bed for sauces. Long-grain rice is fairly bland, so any flavorings added to it mingle nicely. There are other exotic long-grain rice varieties like basmati or jasmine rice, but they are more aromatic and have a nutty flavor. I prefer plain old American long-grain rice for this recipe.

Simple egg noodles work best for this recipe because they cook up in the same amount of time as the rice, arriving at a point where they’re soft but not mushy while maintaining their distinctive flavors. Look for fine egg noodles for this recipe. Through years of rice-making I have found that sauteing the rice in oil for a few minutes until the kernels just become light brown adds additional richness. In this recipe we also saute the noodles to add extra texture and flavor. Sauteed leeks and zucchini along with toasted pistachios add a delightful crunch.

Serves 6 1/4 cup pistachios 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 1/4 cups long-grain white rice 1 1/4 cups fine egg noodles 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth Salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 medium leek, finely chopped 1 medium zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch dice 1/2 cup petit pois, defrosted 3 tablespoons finely chopped parsley, divided 1 tablespoon finely chopped mint 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Toast pistachios in oven for 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Reserve. 2. In a medium saucepan heat 2 tablespoons of the oil on medium heat. Saute the rice and egg noodles for about 3 minutes or until evenly coated and very lightly browned. Add the broth, salt and pepper and increase heat to medium-high heat. Stir with a fork. Lower the heat, cover and simmer 15 to 18 minutes, or until cooked through and the liquid has evaporated. 3. Meanwhile, in a medium skillet heat the butter and remaining oil over medium heat. Add the leeks and saute, stirring occasionally, about 3 minutes or until soft. Add zucchini and continue sauteing for about 3 to 4 minutes or until cooked but slightly crisp. Season with salt and pepper. 4. When rice and noodles are cooked, add all vegetables, pistachios, 2 tablespoons parsley and the mint. Toss with a fork, taste for seasoning, and garnish with remaining tablespoon of parsley. Serve immediately.

My Answer:
Need a Rev. Billy Graham
Life is a journey, although sometimes we forget it
A: Some see their own life’s journey as a series of unrelated events — some good, some bad — strung together like beads on a string. Others feel trapped like a leaf in a rushing stream, tossed about by circumstances beyond control. Many people may never have stopped to think about the road they are traveling. Life is a journey, although sometimes we forget it. Life becomes so hectic, and we become so preoccupied with our immediate concerns that we don’t step back and see the whole picture. For many people life is a constant struggle just to survive. Others have everything they could ever want yet remain unsatisfied and unfulfilled. But God didn’t intend for our journey through life to be this way. Instead, He meant for it to be filled with joy and purpose, with even the most ordinary events being part of His plan. He also wants to guide us as we make decisions and to give us hope for the future. Most of all, He wants to make this journey with us. Sometimes we get tired of the burdens of life. Sometimes life touches one person with a bouquet and another with a thorn bush. But the first may find a wasp in the flowers and the second may discover roses among the thorns. When we believe in the Lord Jesus and follow Him, we learn that He goes before us every step of the way. “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). (This column is based on the words and writings of the late Rev. Billy Graham.)

Picky pooches
Solutions for finicky
dogs
The image of a dog devouring a bowl of food is a familiar one for dog owners. It’s easy to see dogs as indiscriminate eaters, and many breeds will happily inhale any and as much food as their owners set before them. However, many picky pooches will turn up their noses at even the most savory selections. According to “The Old Farmer’s Almanac,” roughly 40 percent of American households have at least one dog. A survey by Kynetec of more than 3,000 petowning households in Canada found that 41 percent of Canadian households have at least one dog, and those numbers have increased by 7.6 million households since 2016. One component of pet ownership is providing quality sustenance But what to do when your dog goes on a hunger strike? Why dogs refuse to eat Owners of dogs that consistently refuse to eat may wonder just what is going on in that canine brain. The American Kennel Club says various factors may be at play. • Illness: Dogs may refuse to eat if they have a virus or do not feel well. A trip to the vet may be necessary. Similarly, medications can adversely affect appetite. • Emotional changes: Refusal to eat may be a symptom of a major life change, such as a move, home renovation or the arrival of a baby. • Food changes: Dogs like routine, and when their food formula changes they may not eat. This can occur if a vet or a health professional suggests changing a dog’s diet due to a health issue. Patience is necessary in such instances, as dogs may need some time before they acclimate to a new diet.

Handling picky eaters Experts cannot agree on a single strategy to treat pups who are picky eaters. Pet parents can ask their vets and experiment. Here are some suggestions to try, courtesy of the pet food company Dawgie Bowl. • Dogs do not crave variety; they live for consistency. Do not change the dog’s food frequently or because you feel they need a buffet. • Exercise your dog more, as this can stimulate metabolism and appetite. • Pick up food after a certain period of time, such as 20 minutes. The dog will learn to eat during that period or face waiting until the next feeding. • Reward eating after the meal has been consumed so the dog associates eating with good attention. Do not provide any attention to sad, puppy dog eyes and never yell at the dog for not eating. • Dogs can go a few days without eating, particularly if the pooch is drinking water and showing no signs of illness. So don’t fret. A hungry, stubborn dog will eventually eat. A picky nature is something pet owners must contend with at times. Patience can help get dogs back on a solid eating schedule.
