Why do some cats bite and what to do about it? Dear Cathy,

How do I stop my eight-month-old cat from biting me? I think he wants attention but that’s a lousy way to get it. He doesn’t bite my partner, just me. Also, are there any ways to keep the same kitten from pulling all the toilet paper off the rolls?

Cathy M. Rosenthal Columnist • Pet World

Some cats though, take biting a step further. One minute, you’re petting your cat and having a happy moment, the next your cat nails you with their claws or mouth. This is always a scary moment for the pet parent who wonders what on earth they did to deserve a bite? Or they wonder what’s wrong with their cat?

–Judy, Tucson, Arizona Dear Judy,

8 CVM

An eight-month-old kitten is probably biting because he is teething, and his gums are sore. It’s likely just a phase, but phases need to be monitored and managed to ensure they don’t become habits. Cat play is nothing more than a display of a feline’s hunting behaviors, which means they stalk, pounce, and bite things when playing. To avoid getting bitten, never use your hands as playthings. Keep stuffed socks, feathered wands, and other cat toys handy to quickly distract and play with your cat instead. This will keep your hands free from bites and your cat happy and content. www.CommunityValuesMagazines.com

There is nothing wrong with your cat and cat is not misbehaving. But as a pet parent, you did do something wrong. You likely stroked your cat above his level of tolerance while your partner may stroke the cat below his level of tolerance. Cats are extremely sensitive to touch and other stimuli and when they are overstimulated, biting is often their go-to to tell you to stop petting them or remove the stimulus in the room. It’s called petting-induced or overstimulation aggression and is fairly common among cats. This behavior has nothing to do with how the cat feels about you, but with what is happening around them. Be respectful of your feline’s tolerance for touch. Some cats might tolerate five minutes of petting, another cat may only tolerate five strokes, before they turn and bite the hand that feeds them. There are warning signs, like ears that twitch back, dilated pupils, and a rigid, slow-moving tail. Learn your cat’s

Pent-up energy also can contribute to overstimulation aggression. Exercise helps. Make sure your feline has lots of toys, a cat tree, and at least 10 minutes of playtime/exercise, twice daily. If cats are tired from play, they are less likely to be aggressive and/or bite. To address your second question, there are covers you can mount on the wall to keep your cat from unrolling the toilet paper. You also can put the toilet paper on the roller, so the paper has to be pulled from the back of the roll, making it harder, but not impossible, to pull on. You also can place it out of your cat’s reach, like in a basket on the counter or on the tank of the commode.

Dear Cathy,

About two months ago, our five-year-old Golden Doodle refused to go out on walks. She is slightly timid but has been eager to go out most of her life. We’ve tried everything, anxiety pills, treats, etc., but nothing works. I have narrowed it down to cars and their sounds. I read your column about the dog afraid of household noises. I’m wondering about the noise machine. I’ve never seen one but I’m wondering if I should try one or is there some other approach you would try?

Steps for selecting the right pet food Newly minted pet parents must make many decisions as they welcome their pets into their homes. The food pet owners choose is one of the most important decisions pet owners must make. A highquality, well-balanced diet can strengthen the immune system, help pets maintain a healthy weight and keep fur shiny and sleek. It wasn’t too long ago that only a few different brands of pet food were available to consumers. The pet food industry continues to grow, and now there are scores of brands and formulations on the market. A report by Zion Market Research titled “Pet Food Market (Wet Food, Dry Food, Nutrition, Snacks and Others) for Cats, Dogs and Other Animals: U.S Industry Perspective, Comprehensive Analysis and Forecast, 2016-2022,” found that the U.S. pet food market is expected to have a value of more than $30 billion in 2022. There are almost 300 manufacturers operating in the pet food section in the United States, which produce nearly seven million tons of pet food annually. With so many options to choose from, pet owners may not know where to begin when looking for acceptable food for their companion animals. If you have doubts about what to feed your pet, consult with a veterinarian. Then do some research to narrow down the possibilities.

—Dick, Tucson, Arizona Dear Dick, If there is no health problem, then something scared her during a past walk. Stick with the calming supplements and buy an Anxiety Wrap or Thundershirt for her to wear on the walks. The first time she wears it, take her outside, but not for a walk, to let her get used to it. She should begin to feel more confident outside again. When she does, try to take her for a walk. The noise machine works great in the house to block outside noises and could provide some calming energy for her prior to her walk.

tolerance for touch and don’t pet him one stroke more. It’s instinctive to want to pet your cat, but sometimes you have to override your instincts to abide by your feline’s wishes. Cats generally are content sleeping on your lap and maintaining contact with you in that way. Even if you are not petting your cat, you both will still benefit from the close contact.

slow computers

Few things can derail a productive workday more quickly than a slow computer. Many a professional has encountered the dreaded slowdown or spinning color wheel, only to sit in frustration as deadlines draw closer and tasks pile up. Computers can perform slowly due to a variety of factors, many of which can be addressed rather easily. • Too much multitasking: Successful professionals pride themselves on their ability to multitask, but computers can only handle so much. Running many programs simultaneously or having too many browser tabs open at one time is a recipe for a slow computer. Keeping various programs open at once slows down processing speed, leading to lags when switching from one program to another. This is easily overcome by closing programs at the end of each workday and opening them only when you need to. Leaving multiple browser windows open at one time also slows down a computer, especially if the windows are open to pages that auto-refresh. Close windows when you’re done reading an article or no longer need to access information on a particular website. • Software updates: Automatic software updates can be convenient, but they also take up space on computer hard drives. According to TechAdvisory.org, computers run smoothly when at least 15 percent of their total hard drive space is free. Turn off automatic updates and periodically check for updates on your own. If updates are available, install them during non-working hours so you don’t have to wait for the update to install during the workday. • Inadequate hard drive space: Though it’s best to keep at least 15 percent of your hard drive space free, TechAdvisory.org notes

that professionals who routinely work on multiple files at one time can very quickly use up more than 85 percent of their hard drive space, especially if they need to store those files on their computers. In such instances, purchasing additional hard drive space can improve performance. Adding more RAM, which temporarily stores data that is currently being worked on, also can help users overcome storage-related slowdowns. • Viruses: Computer viruses are most often linked to corrupted files and frozen screens, but they also can cause computers to

operate more slowly. Conduct a virus scan on the computer to see if that’s what’s behind the spinning color wheel or frozen screens. Many things can cause a computer to slow down. Thankfully, there are just as many solutions to fix slow computers as there are problems that can adversely affect their performance.

Explaing Wills & Trusts It’s never too early for adults to think about estate planning. Estate planning is an important part of money management. While it’s easy to think of estate planning as just a way to dictate how your assets are allocated after your death, estate planning also can protect people and their money should accidents or injury make them incapable of managing their finances on their own. Some familiar terms may come up when people begin planning how they hope to transfer their assets. Two more common terms are wills and trusts. Understanding the distinctions between the two can help people as they begin estate planning.

What is a trust? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them. Is it better to have a will or a trust? Both wills and trusts can be useful when estate planning. In fact, wills are often used to establish trusts, and many people have both a will and a trust. Estate planning is an important part of managing one’s finances. A qualified attorney who specializes in estate planning can help people write their wills and, if necessary, establish trusts that can help surviving loved ones in the wake of their death.

C V M

What is a will? The online financial resource Investopedia notes that wills are legally enforceable documents that dictate how people want their affairs handled and assets allocated in the wake of their deaths. Wills should include a host of information, including who a person wants to assume guardianship of their minor-aged children should they pass away. This is especially important information to include in a will, as surviving relatives may have to go to

court to contest guardianship if parents do not dictate who they want to serve as guardians in their wills.

Outdoor improvements that boost home value

W

hether home improvement projects are design to improve the interior or exterior of a house, focusing on renovations that make the most financial sense can benefit homeowners in the long run. The right renovations can be assets if and when homeowners decide to sell their homes. So how does one get started? First and foremost, speak to a local real estate agent who is knowledgeable about trends in the community. While a swimming pool may be something coveted in one area, it may impede sales in another. It also helps to study generalized trends and data from various home improvement industry analysts to guide upcoming projects. The following outdoor projects are just a few renovations that tend to add value. Fire pit: A fire pit is a great place to gather most months of the year. Bob Vila and CBS news report that a fire pit realizes a 78 percent return on investment, or ROI.

Outdoor kitchen: Many buyers are looking to utilize their yards as an extension of interior living areas. Cooking, dining and even watching TV outdoors is increasingly popular. Outdoor living areas can be custom designed and built. In addition, prefabricated modular units that require a much smaller commitment of time and money are available. Patio: Homeowners who do not already have a patio will find that adding one can increase a home’s value. Patios help a home look neat, add useable space and may help a home to sell quickly.

16

The experts at Space Wise, a division of Extra Space Storage, say that refinishing, repairing and building a new patio offers strong ROI. Deck: Deck can be as valuable as patios. A deck is another outdoor space that can be used for entertaining, dining and more. Remodeling magazine’s 2018 “Cost vs. Value” report indicates that an $11,000 deck can add about $9,000 in resale value to the home, recouping around 82 percent of the project’s costs. Door update: Improve curb appeal with

Emerging deck trends

• Wooden walkways: Decking can be the more traditional design people envision with a patio table or outdoor furniture. But it also can consist of wooden walkways or a low-laying patio to accentuate the yard.

• Mixed materials: Homeowners may be inspired by commercial eateries, breweries and urban markets in their exterior design choices. Decks featuring composite materials and aluminum railings blend sophistication, urban appeal and comfort.

• Fire pit conversation area: Many decks can incorporate water or fire elements for visual appeal. Gas-fueled fire elements can expand the functionality of decks beyond the warm seasons, or make enjoying them practical on nights when the temperature plummets.

What to know before installing built-ins When deciding how to renovate interior spaces, homeowners will make some relatively temporary changes, but they also may consider some permanent adjustments. Built-ins fall into the category of permanent adjustments, and while realty professionals note that built-ins tend to provide a good return on investment, homeowners can learn more about built-ins before deciding if they want to install them in their homes. What are built-ins? Realtor.com defines built-ins as any feature that is built into the interior of a home. The term “built-ins” may immediately conjure up images of bookshelves, but built-ins also include benches and entertainment centers. Why install builtins? Built-ins can be both utilitarian and aesthetically appealing. Built-ins are functional because they provide storage space that homeowners may otherwise find hard to create. Built-ins are embedded in walls that may otherwise be useful only to hang artwork. This can provide much-needed storage space in homes with limited square footage. Professionally installed built-ins also can transform rooms, making them appear more organized. Customized built-ins also can give homes their own unique character, though it’s important to note that prospective buyers may or may not appreciate that uniqueness. Are there disadvantages to built-ins? The permanence of built-ins may not appeal to some buyers. If buyers don’t like built-ins at all or are not fond of the look of customized built-ins, that may be enough to convince them to walk away from a property. However, Realtor.com notes that functional built-ins, like built-in bench seats with storage capacity, appeal to modern buyers and their preference for as much storage space as possible. Permanent built-ins also can be costly. The home remodeling resource Fixr.com notes that built-in entertainment center installations can cost between $8,000 and $9,500. Built-in seating and bookshelves are not as costly, but such projects still cost more than simply buying premade furniture.Get a qualified handyman services company to do the intallation for you.

Tips for Buying a Home in a Seller’s Market The real estate market can be difficult to navigate for both buyers and sellers. First-time buyers can easily become overwhelmed as they search for homes, while sellers hoping to get the best price for their homes might be frustrated if offers are slow to come in or fall short of their asking prices. If met with an underwhelming market, many sellers can pull their homes off the market and wait until it becomes more advantageous to sell. But buyers, particularly those shopping in a seller’s market, may not have that flexibility. Buying in a seller’s market can be competitive and frustrating, but buyers can employ various strategies to survive such markets and land the homes of their dreams. • Get mortgage preapproval. Sellers’ markets typically feature low inventory, which can make the buying process very competitive. Prospective buyers who do not have a mortgage preapproval

letter in hand when making offers may find themselves losing out on their dream homes to fellow buyers who have gotten preapproval from a lending institution. Sellers may be impatient with buyers who have not yet been preapproved for a mortgage, even accepting a lesser offer from buyers who are ready to begin transactions immediately. The preapproval process is relatively quick and simple, so buyers should not hesitate to apply. • Stick to your budget. Lenders will indicate to prospective buyers how much they’re willing to lend them, and that figure is typically considerably more than buyers are willing to borrow. In a seller’s market, bidding wars can quickly drive up prices, but buyers should stick to their budgets so they are not house poor after buying. Sticking to a budget can be difficult in a seller’s market, but such patience will likely pay off in the long run.

3 tips to prepare to sell your home Because spring is such a popular time to sell a home, homeowners who want to put their homes on the market should use winter as an opportunity to prepare their homes for the prying eyes of prospective buyers. The following tips can help homeowners during the pre-selling preparation process. SH172757 According to Realtor.com, spring is the busiest and best season to sell a home. While a good home can find a buyer any time of year, homeowners might find the buyers’ pool is strongest in spring and into summer. The reasons for that are many, ranging from parents wanting to move when their children are not in school to buyers wanting to move when the weather is most accommodating. Because spring is such a popular time to sell a home, homeowners who want to put their homes on the market should use winter as an opportunity to prepare their homes for the prying eyes of prospective buyers. The following tips can help homeowners during the pre-selling preparation process. 1. Address the exterior of the home. 2. Conquer interior clutter. 3. Eliminate odors.

C V M

• Be ready to compromise. Unless they have unlimited budgets, buyers often must compromise when purchasing a home. That’s especially true in a seller’s market with limited inventory. Buyers who need to buy a home must identify their needs versus their wants and recognize the likelihood that they will have to compromise. • Work with real estate agents. Some buyers may be tempted to go it alone, searching for and ultimately buying homes without the help of real estate agents. That can be a foolish move in a seller’s market where competition is high and inventory quickly disappears from the market. Veteran real estate agents have worked in buyers’ and sellers’ markets, and buyers can use that experience to their advantage. In addition, real estate agents likely have access to inventory before homes appear on popular real estate websites, giving buyers working with them a leg up in competitive markets. Buying a home in a seller’s market can be fast-moving and very competitive. But various strategies can ensure buyers still find great homes at great prices in such markets.

How agents and sellers can work together Selling a home can be stressful. Despite this, 5.51 million existing U.S. homes were sold in 2017, according to data from the National Association of REALTORS®. In many cases, homeowners choose to work with real estate agents to facilitate the process of listing, showing and selling their homes. Real estate agents are valuable assets. Agents have neighborhood knowledge, are educated in pricing trends, can filter phone calls or emails from buyers who aren’t serious, and can organize all of the people necessary for a closing. Real estate agents provide many services that the average person may not have the time nor the experience to handle. When selecting an agent to sell a home, homeowners may not understand that the terms real estate agent and REALTOR® are not interchangeable. Although both must be licensed to sell real estate, the main difference between a real estate agent and a REALTOR® is the latter is a member of the National Association of REAL-

TORS®. NAR ensures that members subscribe to a certain code of ethics. There are many qualified agents, but an agent cannot do his or her job well without some help on the part of the homeowner. These tips can make the process of selling a home go smoothly. • Price the home correctly. Homeowners should trust the agent’s ability to price a home for the market. Everyone wants to get the most money possible, but listing the home for more than it’s worth may cause it to sit unnecessarily for several weeks or months, which could raise red flags among potential buyers. • Market the home. A real estate agent will list the home via a multiple listing service (MLS) on a private website, in newspapers, and wherever else he or she feels is pertinent. Homeowners can share the listing via social media and word of mouth to help increase the chances of selling the home. • Be available. Limiting the time an agent can show the house to potential buyers is in no one’s best interest. Sellers should be ready and willing to open their homes, which is the best way to make a sale. An agent may suggest a lock box so the home can be shown when homeowners are not on the property. • Make suggested renovations. Agents know which features can make or break a sale. Homeowners should be amenable to certain suggestions, such as neutral paint colors, removing personal effects and clearing clutter. • Give recommendations. Real estate is a commission-based industry. Agents often tirelessly put in hours and only reap rewards if the house is sold. A homeowner who was satisfied with an agent can then recommend that person to friends or family. By working with real estate professionals, homeowners can sell their homes quickly.

Blood shortage due to lack of blood donors during such as fever, cough, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. COVID-19 pandemic Symptoms can range widely, from mild to severe. Due to the naJustin Kreuter, M.D., Transfusion Medicine, Mayo Clinic DEAR MAYO CLINIC: Why do blood banks need more donors at this time? How will that help care providers take care of people with COVID-19? ANSWER: At this time, the blood shortage is not due to an unusually high demand for blood products. The problem is a lack of supply. Most people who have COVID-19 don’t require blood transfusions. But the COVID-19 pandemic is triggering critical blood shortages across the country and creating challenges for health care institutions. That’s because blood collections have plummeted due to concerns about the virus. If you are a healthy adult who is not quarantined, you can help by making an appointment with your local blood collector to donate. If you cannot donate, you can help by sharing messages from your local blood bank. COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that leads to symptoms

ture of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing - putting space between yourself and others to reduce the spread of illness - has become common. For many people, that includes avoiding public spaces. It also has led to cancellation of community blood drives that many blood banks rely on. Under normal circumstances, health care organizations typically keep a one- to two-week supply of blood and other blood products. Due to the disruption caused by COVID-19, the blood inventory will continue to be fragile throughout this pandemic. That’s a big problem because the need for blood continues on as usual in many other patient populations. Emergency openheart surgery requires blood. Trauma care frequently requires multiple units of blood. Cancer patients often depend on donated blood to make it through their chemotherapy treatments. Receiving donated blood may be the difference between life and death for some of these people. All healthy adults who are not quarantined are strongly encouraged to make an appointment to donate blood. Giving blood by appointment, rather than as a walk-in, enables donor centers to follow social distancing best practices. A new sterile collection set, including the needle, is used for each donor. That means there is no risk of getting a disease by donating blood. And only healthy people should be at the blood donor center. Be assured that blood collection centers always are extremely clean. They have to be to ensure the quality of the blood that’s collected for patient care. A recent study found that fewer than 5% of Americans who are eligible to donate blood actually are donors. That low number has always been a concern. But it’s even more worrisome now because some long-term blood donors fall into high-risk categories for COVID-19 due to their age or underlying health concerns, and that will make it difficult for them to continue donating. Other people will have to step up. To meet the need, it likely will require a massive turnout from people who have not donated before or those who have not donated for a long time.

24 CVM

To successfully get past this shortage and through the summer months ahead, when the blood supply is historically low, it’s crucial that healthy, eligible donors consider donating blood and make it a habit. Please consider contacting your local blood donation center today to make an appointment to give blood. By doing so, you could save a life. www.CommunityValuesMagazines.com

life gameWhat you pick and how you choose Determines whether you win or lose

Believers in Christ have the strongest resource for strong marriage

It all depends upon how you play If you survive to see another day

Q: How does a couple build a strong marriage? With an attack on God’s design it almost seems impossible. - S.M.

You can soar or you can fall But you never know until you risk it all

A: The home is the foundation of any society, but it most certainly has been attacked for a long time. There have never been more books available advising how to solve our family and marital problems than now. Yet somehow more people are miserable, broken and hurt.

Grow in love or burn in hate Only you can decide your fate When it’s all over and the race has been run Can you look back and say you’ve won? What prize do you get when you win at life? Money? Family? Husband? Wife? We all just pray to do it right As we lay down to sleep each night. Keep up the good fight.

We don’t have to search for the answer to why this is. The Word of God has not been taken into account. Couples have not sought the Lord’s help; His counsel and wisdom. Society has disregarded His regulations and it has brought marriages and homes to disaster. The husband-wife relationship under the guidance of the Holy Spirit is key to family success. God intends that couples are held together through Christ. Marriage was never designed to be short-term; it is a contract for life ordered by God Himself.

Leslie Bertrand, ©Paradoxical Phoenix, 5 November 2020

Throughout Scripture God’s call to mankind is to return to His Word and build our homes on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ the Lord. “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.... Teach them diligently to your children” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). The cornerstone in the foundation of a happy home is the spiritual exercise of prayer, Bible reading, obeying God’s commands, and fellowship with others who have made Christ predominant in life. This column is based on the words and writings of the late Rev. Billy Graham.

Believers in Christ have the strongest resource for strong marriages because God is at the helm. If He is not, it is reason to examine why. “And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand” (Mark 3:25). If a couple is unequally yoked, or if a husband and wife have never given their lives to Christ, they should submit themselves to Him, repent of sin, and faithfully follow His Word (the Bible).

News Years Eve Muffaletta Bites

Serves 6 to 8, three or four tartlets each New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations stand to look a little different this year. Even though guest lists may be smaller and parties much more intimate, hosts can increase the “wow factor” in other ways — namely with the food. Though New Orleans is well known for its French and Creole heritage, Sicilian immigrants who settled in the region in the early 20th century brought with them their cuisine as well. Muffaletto bread is a doughy sesame seed bread that residents ended up pairing with various meats and cheeses. Central Grocery Co. owner Salvatore Lupo decided to turn the bread and food combination into a sandwich and dubbed it the Muffaletta Sandwich. Made on rounds of soft, fluffy sesame bread, and covered with salami, ham, mortadella, provolone, and olive salad. Every bite was full of flavor — and has become a New Orleans specialty. This recipe for “Muffaletta Bites” from “Southern Appetizers” (Chronicle Books) by Denise Gee emulates the flavors in bite-sized morsels and can enhance New Year’s Eve festivities. Muffaletta Bites Serves 6 to 8, three or four tartlets each

1 1⁄2 1⁄4 1⁄4 2

16-ounce jar Italian olive salad, drained cup shredded smoked provolone cheese cup finely chopped salami cup finely chopped ham 12-ounce cans refrigerated flaky biscuit dough Fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley for garnish

In a medium bowl, stir together the olive salad with the cheese, salami and ham. Cover and refrigerate for about 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Lightly coat two 12-well miniature muffin pans with cooking spray, if necessary.

www.CommunityValuesMagazines.com

On a lightly floured surface, place the biscuit dough in two even rows and, using a rolling pin or clean finger, gently flatten/pat into a 1⁄2-inch-thick rectangle. Firmly press the perforation to seal. Cut each rectangle into 24 squares (each about 2 inches wide). Place one square of dough in each of the prepared muffin wells. Firmly press the dough extended over the edges of each well; shape the edges with your fingers or use a fork to crimp it as desired. (The dough will rise at times; just press it back down until you can add filling). At this point, you can cover the muffin pan and refrigerate up to 1 hour. Spoon a heaping 1 tablespoon of the filling into each well. Bake until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes. Remove the tartlets from the pan and garnish each with a parsley leaf. Serve warm or at room temperature.
