Yelfris is a leading player in London’s multifaceted, multi-rooted music scene. Support is French-Spanish duo Sofree - Yasmeen Quintana and Freemachinist. João Bosco + Gui Tavares Sunday 28 April Doors 7pm The Jazz Cafe 5 Parkway NW1 7PG £25 in advance (£28 on the door) The music of virtuoso João Bosco, one of Brazil’s most fabled guitarists, singers and composers is rooted in Brazil’s classic samba and bossa nova traditions, but he combines them with rock and jazz in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is. Part of the vanguard of young, socially committed musicians and songwriters who emerged under the dictatorship

in the 1970s – including Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Chico Buarque – he empowered Brazilians with songs that conveyed intense pride and fighting spirit. Support Gui Tavares is a Brazilian jazz songwriter and musical arranger who trained as a classical guitarist. Presented with The Jazz Cafe

Celso Piña y Su Ronda Bogotá + Arriba la Cumbia! DJs Sunday 28 April Doors 7pm EartH 11-17 Stoke Newington Road N16 8BH £20 in advance (£23 on the door) Accordionist-singer and composer extraordinaire Celso Piña is the King of Cumbia, the loping four/ four rhythm that soundtracks Latin America from Mexico to Argentina. His flavours are a blend of ska, Norteño, reggae, sonidero and cumbia (of course). His huge hit Cumbia Sobre el Rio (originally recorded with Control Machete) introduced a generation raised on urban music to the rolling delight of the cumbia sound. DJs Russ Jones & Carlitos Niño from London’s longest running cumbia club night Arriba La Cumbia! play an opening set of classics. After party follows in EartH Kitchen until late. Maravillas de Mali Thursday 2 May 7.30pm Barbican Hall, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DS £20 - £30 Boncana Maïga leads the historic rebirth of Malian-Cuban band Las Maravillas de Mali, 50 years after their formation in 1960s Cuba. Combining Cuban charanga with traditional Malian sounds, their best-known song Rendez-Vous Chez Fatimata brought all of Africa dancing to its feet and also deeply marked the history of both African and Latin music. They will be performing tracks from their new record Africa Mia, with guest vocals from the glorious Guinean singer Mory Kanté. Los Auténticos Decadentes + The Otherness + Choriparty + Brixton Cumbia Association + Silvio DJ Friday 3 May Doors 9pm – 3am Electric Brixton, Town Hall Parade, SW2 1RJ £27 in advance (£32 on the door) Los Auténticos Decadentes, one of the most loved and respected bands in Latin America, make their long awaited UK debut in an epic Noche de Carnaval in Brixton to start the long La Linea bank holiday weekend. Their first hit Veni Raquel set the tone with its irreverence and ironic humour. From Argentina, the group mixes ska with regional traditions like canzonetta, and their songs are classic anthems of the Argentine night. Opening the night is The Otherness from Patagonia. After Los Auténticos, the notorious Choriparty, the hugely successful long-running Argentinian club night, maintains the late night party vibe with Silvio DJ, and Brixton Cumbia Association. Antonio Sánchez – Birdman Live

Saturday 4 May 8pm Barbican Hall, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DS £20 - £30 UK premiere of Antonio Sánchez’ live scoring of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Oscar winning film Birdman. Following the worldwide A four-time Grammy Award success of Birdman, which winner, Antonio Sánchez is won four Academy Awards considered by many critics and (including Best Picture and musicians to be one of the finest Best Director), Antonio drummers, bandleaders and Sánchez performs his Golden composers of his generation. Globe and BAFTA nominated He has performed with Chick original score live with the Corea, Pat Metheny, Herbie film. His original soundtrack Hancock, Gary Burton and was improvised almost in Charlie Haden. He comes its entirety, and, throughout from a cinematic family — his this performance, Sánchez grandfather is the veteran extemporises with the Mexican actor Ignacio López projection. Dino D’Santiago Saturday 4 May Doors 8pm Rich Mix 35-47 Bethnal Green Rd E1 6LA £12 in advance (£15 on the door) Dino d’Santiago is the name to drop in the new Portuguese music scene where his track Nova Lisboa has become that city’s anthem. A Portuguese singer of Cape Verdean descent, Dino picks up where groups like Buraka Som Sistema left off, using rhythms mixed for modern dancefloors alongside handplayed instruments and electronics with lyrics in both Creole and Portuguese, creating a warm but incisive new Portuguese urban sound. Afro Cuban Music Room Sunday 5 May Doors 2pm - 8pm EartH Concert Hall 11-17 Stoke Newington Road N16 8BH Free admission The Afro Cuban Music Room is a musical-filmic experience with a difference. An immersive event, it transports you to the city of Matanzas to experience rumba played by members of the leading group Muñequitos de Matanzas in the space where it was born, the solares (tenement yards). Walk into the space and musicians are playing all around you – if you get close to one you can pick out the sound of their instrument as if you were there. Everyday life goes on around the musicians with family and friends wandering in to watch, dance and sing. Created by Sara McGuinness, Simon Zagorski-Thomas and El Almacén collective from Matanzas. A native of the Baja California region of Mexico, Morrison has been a central figure in the independent Mexican music community for a decade, releasing a steady stream of EPs and LPs and recording with a range of Mexican artists—including the singer-songwriter Natalia LaFourcade, Kinky, and producer Alejandro Jiménez, better known as Jandro.
