Northern Women Se o Porto fosse uma mulher seria senhora de muitos encantos.

Orgulhosa e genuína, sem medo de dizer o que pensa, caminharia sempre formosa e segura. E, ao mesmo tempo, seria acolhedora, de sorriso enigmático e gargalhada fresca, trazendo na doçura da voz a rebeldia da pronúncia do Norte.

Seria certamente uma pioneira como Maria Cândida Rocha e Silva: a primeira, e até agora única, banqueira portuguesa.

Ou como Beatriz Machado, a primeira diretora de vinhos de um hotel vínico, o The Yeatman Hotel. Teria o carisma de Mi Romano e o charme de Diana Pereira que, não sendo portuense, por amor se apaixonou pela cidade Invicta.

Distinguindo-se em diferentes áreas, estas são as protagonistas desta edição da Magnitude, que pretende homenagear as mulheres portuguesas e, em particular, as mulheres do Norte.

Mulheres que, com graça e garra muito próprias, atingem novos patamares, contribuindo para o crescimento de uma região em constante renovação.

E já que falamos de renovação, também a Marques Soares acompanha as cadências do tempo. O seu Espaço Jovem renasceu com um espírito mais trendy e urbano, abrindo-se para uma Baixa cada vez mais pulsante de vida. Venha conhecê-lo nas páginas desta revista e na rua das Carmelitas.

If Oporto were a woman, she would be a very charming one: proud and genuine; not afraid of saying what she thinks and she would always be beautiful and walk with pride. At the same time, she would be warm, with an enigmatic smile and a fresh laughter, showing in the sweetness of her voice the rebellion of the Northern accent.

She would certainly be a pioneer such as Cândida Maria Rocha e Silva, the first, and so far the only, Portuguese banker.

Or Beatriz Machado, the first wine director of a wine hotel, The Yeatman Hotel. She would have the charisma of Mi Romano and Diana Pereira’s charm, who not being a Portuense (from Oporto), for love fell in love with the Invicta city.

Distinguished in different areas, these are the protagonists of this Magnitude’s edition, which aims to pay tribute to Portuguese women and especially to the Northern women. Women that, with a very own elegance and great determination, reach new levels, contributing to the growth of a constantly renewing region.

Now that are talking about renewal, Marques Soares also follows the times. Its Youth Section reborn with a trendier and urban spirit, opening up to a Baixa (Downtown) with an increasingly effervescent life. Come get to know it in the pages of this magazine and at Rua das Carmelitas. As always, we will be happy to welcome you.

Começou por estudar Filologia Clássica. O que a levou a optar por esta área de estudos?

Gosto muito de Línguas, especialmente de Latim e Grego por serem o radical da nossa língua e pelas muitas influências que exercem no Português. Estudar estas culturas é compreender as raízes da nossa própria cultura.

You began your studies in Classic Philology. What led you to choose this field of studies?

I really enjoy languages, especially Latin and Greek as they are the structure of our language and influence on Portuguese. Studying these cultures is to understand the roots of our own culture.

Before finishing your course you went to work in Angola as a teacher

Antes de terminar o curso, foi trabalhar para Angola como professora e tradutora. Quais os melhores momentos que guarda da vida em Luanda?

Fui para Luanda em 1965, onde vivi durante três anos. As circunstâncias irrepetíveis em que esse período decorreu – éramos jovens desenraizados, de um modo geral ganhando bons ordenados e sem grandes preocupações de poupança já que pensávamos lá ficar toda a vida, a beleza da cidade ou mesmo a minha juventude –, fizeram daqueles anos uma época de ouro. Guardo na memória grandes momentos passados em Luanda, mas o melhor terá sido, seguramente, o nascimento da minha primeira filha que coincidiu com este período da minha vida em Luanda.

Sinceramente? Da frescura dos meus 20 anos.

A new chapter in your life begins when you return to Portugal. You go

your life in Luanda?

I went to Luanda in 1965, where I lived for three years. The unique circumstances of that period in time – we were uprooted youths, generally, earning very good wages and with no concern with saving money as we thought we would stay there for the rest of our lives; the beauty of the city or even my youth – have made a golden era out of those years. I hold great memories of moments spent in Luanda, but the best was definitely the birth of my first daughter, which coincided with this period of my life in Luanda.

What do you miss the most from your life in Angola?

Honestly? The youthfulness of my twenties.

When I returned to Portugal, I graduated in Romanic Philology. My admission to L. J. Carregosa followed a request made by my father, who was a managing partner of the company. In fact, I no longer remember exactly what happened on the first day at L. J. Carregosa, but I recall that, at the time, I went to replace someone who had resigned. Initially, my duties were to learn, study the company’s business and try to do what was expected.

me foi feito pelo meu pai, que era sócio gerente da empresa. Na realidade, já não me recordo exatamente do que aconteceu no primeiro dia na L. J. Carregosa, mas sei que, na altura, fui preencher o lugar de alguém que se tinha despedido. Inicialmente as minhas funções passavam por aprender, inteirar-me do negócio da casa e tentar corresponder ao que esperavam de mim.

Fez um percurso académico na área das Letras, mas o destino acabou por lhe trocar as voltas e a sua carreira profissional prosseguiu no sector bancário. Lamenta não ter seguido a área das Humanidades?

Só nos é dado assistir ao desenrolar de uma vida – a que escolhemos ou a que nos coube em sorte –, as outras vidas, as que sonhámos como nossas, não existiram. Não sabemos, sequer, em que esquina se terão desfeito. Poderiam, até, ter-se desmoronado frente ao primeiro obstáculo. Para mim, a vida – a que tenho realmente – tem sido de uma enorme generosidade e estou gratíssima a Deus por isso.

Your academic career was in the field of philology, but fate dictated a career in banking. Do you regret not having pursued a career in humanities?

We are only given one opportunity to watch our lives unravel – the life we chose or the one that happened to come about. The other lives, the ones we dreamt of, simply do not exist. We do not even know where and when they got lost. They could even have collapsed at the first hurdle. For me, life – the one that I have – has been extremely generous and I am very, very grateful to God for that.

Como é que foi a adaptação ao mundo da alta finança?

A adaptação deu-se de um modo perfeitamente natural, pela mão de meu pai que era reconhecido e respeitado no sector financeiro.

Tinha a segurança (e o aval) da Casa Carregosa, que estava totalmente credibilizada no mercado. Só me era pedido que não desbaratasse esse capital de confiança.

Tornou-se na primeira mulher portuguesa a exercer a profissão de corretora de bolsa e depois, na única mulher banqueira em Portugal. Alguma vez se sentiu limitada (ou privilegiada) por ser uma mulher num mundo dominado tradicionalmente pelo sexo masculino?

Nem limitada, nem privilegiada, penso que sempre fui lúcida e soube perceber qual era o meu lugar. Talvez por isso, os outros terão entendido e terão feito uso de igual bom senso.

How did you adapt to the world of high finance?

In a perfectly natural way, by my father’s hand who was recognized and respected in the financial sector. I had the trust and approval of the Carregosa house, which was completely credible in the market. All that was asked of me was to value this trust.

You became the first Portuguese woman stock broker and then, the only Portuguese woman banker. Did you ever feel restricted (or privileged) for being a woman in a world traditionally dominated by men?

I did not feel restricted, or privileged, I think I have always known my place. Perhaps that is why others have understood and used the same common sense.

Do you feel an added responsibility being the first woman to establish herself in a predominantly male environment?

Sente uma responsabilidade acrescida ao ser a primeira mulher a afirmar-se num meio predominantemente masculino?

De forma alguma. Talvez noutro meio profissional se colocasse essa questão...

Ao longo do seu percurso, já recebeu inúmeras distinções, tanto a nível nacional como internacional. A última vez foi em 2015, quando recebeu o prémio carreira “Lifetime Achievement” por parte da Deloitte. O que é que estas distinções representam na sua vida e, em particular, na sua carreira?

Encaro estes prémios e distinções como uma manifestação de generosidade da parte da vida, de quem me julga. Procuro não lhes dar uma importância exagerada, mas são, sem dúvida, um reconhecimento que nos encoraja e nos conforta.

I see these awards and distinctions as gift from those who judge my life. I try not to attribute too much importance to them, but they are certainly an important and encouraging recognition.

ENCONTRO MEETING A sua evolução profissional mistura-se com a evolução da L. J. Carregosa que mais tarde, havia de chegar a Banco pelas suas mãos. Quais foram, até agora, os momentos mais marcantes na sua carreira?

O sucesso e as transformações que o corpo L. J. Carregosa tem sofrido não podem ser obra minha mas sim de todos os que nela trabalham. Não seria possível de outro modo. Eu serei a face mais visível mas nós somos uma equipa onde, sobretudo os que vieram desde o princípio têm sabido manter uma grande coesão, uma amizade que permite ultrapassar e esquecer as inevitáveis más experiências.

Your personal professional development and that of L. J. Carregosa

Afirma estar em fim de carreira. Foi sucessora do seu pai na Casa Carregosa. Já encontrou um sucessor a quem possa entregar este legado?

Esta é uma pergunta que me fazem continuamente, mas para a qual confesso não ter resposta. Não sei o que o futuro nos reserva.

Sei sim que, dentre filhos e netos, existem pessoas muito preparadas, e outros em progresso, com futuros bastante promissores.

Mas só Deus saberá se terão disponibilidade (e vontade) para colocarem esse valor ao serviço do Banco Carregosa.

You say you are reaching the end of your career. You succeeded your

It would not have happened any other way. I am perhaps the most visible member of the team, but the team that has been with us from the start has been crucial in maintaining a cohesive friendship that has allowed us to overcome inevitable bad experiences.

This is a question that I am asked continuously, but to which I admit I do not have an answer. I do not know what the future holds for us. I know that, amongst children and grandchildren, there are very well prepared people, and others with very promising futures being reared. But only God knows if they are willing and able to serve Banco Carregosa.

And plans for the future…?

Poderia ter feito muitas outras coisas ou talvez fizesse exatamente as mesmas, mas seguramente tentaria fazê-las melhor.

Pensando bem… quantas vezes seria preciso voltarmos atrás para atingirmos a perfeição?

I could have done many things or maybe just those that I did, but those I would have surely tried to have done better. On second thought... how far would we have to go back in order to achieve perfection?

What book made the biggest impression on your life?

A book by Somerset Maugham. I read it many years ago and it marked

Fora do ambiente de trabalho, não prescinde dos seus momentos de leitura e é uma admiradora assumida dos livros de António Lobo Antunes. Revê-se na atitude irreverente do autor perante o mundo?

Aprecio os meus momentos de leitura e aprecio muito a escrita de António Lobo Antunes sobretudo porque veio mostrar que havia outra forma de escrever. Achei os seus primeiros livros absolutamente deslumbrantes. Mas não me revejo nada na atitude do escritor, se é que essa atitude pode ser considerada irreverente…

It is true that I consider alleviating the suffering of others to be “the greatest power”! I envy doctors enormously as they are capable of that every day. It must be extraordinary!

Licenciou-se em Filologia Românica, mas foi no sector financeiro, e em particular nas áreas do mercado de capitais e gestão de carteira, que trilhou toda a sua carreira. Foi Presidente da Corretora L. J. Carregosa e, mais tarde da L. J. Carregosa - Sociedade Financeira de Corretagem, que viria a transformar em banco, em 2008, a que preside desde então. Born in Vila do Conde, on the 9th of January, 1944, where she lived until she was 10 years old, when she moved to Oporto. With a degree in Romanic Philology, although it was in the financial sector, and particularly in the areas of capital markets and portfolio management, that she spent her entire career, she was President of L. J. Carregosa Brokerage and later of L. J. Carregosa – Finance Corporation Brokerage, which in 2008 became a bank, of which she is still president. In 2011, she was appointed Ambassador of the "European Network of Feminine Entrepreneurship" by the European Commission and by the Belgian Presidency, and the following year, "Businesswoman of the Year" by Máxima magazine. In 2015, she was awarded the "Lifetime Achievement", by Deloitte. She lives in Oporto, a city which has bestowed upon her the Medal of Merit – Gold Grade.

ENCONTRO MEETING

A passagem pela Oficina de S. José - IPSS foi uma experiência inigualável que tenho muita pena que tenha acabado. Mama Help é um dos projetos que faz parte da preocupação social do Banco Carregosa e, sobretudo, traduz a nossa admiração pela sua Presidente, a Senhora Professora Maria João Cardoso, que trata os seus doentes com um saber e um carinho inexcedíveis. É um projeto admirável, mas tenho colegas que talvez ajudem mais do eu.

Já viajou pelo mundo, mas confessa que, se pudesse perder-se numa cidade seria em Verona porque “é uma cidade pequena e um museu a céu aberto, onde a arte está por todo o lado”. Esta não poderia ser também uma bonita forma de descrever o Porto?

Verona é a cidade estrangeira que visitei mais vezes e realmente tem bocadinhos de arte em todas as esquinas. Além disso, o centro histórico é pequenino, sem arranha-céus, sem centros comerciais e com ruas pedonais por onde é bom passear. Mas não me lembra muito o Porto.

O Porto é a minha cidade, onde vivo há sessenta anos e onde gosto muito de viver. Tem um mar lindo! Viver perto do mar é bom para o corpo e para a alma.

when you were 10 years-old and the Oporto of today?

I especially remember talking about going downtown when people used to walk in the streets (unlike today, by car), when there were beautiful shop windows to look at and it was nice to walk on Rua Santa Catarina.

Quais as grandes diferenças entre o Porto que conheceu aos 10 anos de idade e o Porto dos dias de hoje?

Lembro-me sobretudo de falar em ir à baixa quando as pessoas andavam nas ruas (e não como hoje dentro dos carros), quando havia montras bonitas para ver e era bom passear na Rua Santa Catarina. Nos últimos anos, o Porto que se tinha deixado envelhecer, com casas degradadas que o tornavam feio, recuperou ânimo, abriu as portas e os turistas entraram.

Foram as low-cost, foram os cruzeiros, foi um pouco de tudo. O Porto é uma cidade muito monumental com imensos restaurantes onde se come bem (e para os estrangeiros muito barato), imensos hotéis, ruas relativamente tranquilas, os portuenses sabem receber, já temos teatro, espetáculos e somos muito visitados. Neste momento a cidade tem até imensos estrangeiros que para cá vieram viver. Isto antes não acontecia e é bom que aconteça!

Também temos um Presidente da Câmara (Rui Moreira) que se bate imenso pela cidade e sabe estar presente quando teimam em não reconhecer a nossa importância.

Situada em plena Rua das Flores – onde ainda se mantém o edifício – a então casa de câmbios transforma-se, em 1994, numa Sociedade Corretora. Foi o centro das atividades comerciais e marítimas de um Porto de outros tempos. Hoje mantém o seu encanto de antigo cais, mas ao ritmo de uma cidade moderna, com os seus hotéis de charme, restaurantes e esplanadas viradas para o Douro sereno, apenas rasgado pelo contínuo ir e vir dos barcos.

Parte integrante do Centro Histórico – classificado como Património Cultural da Humanidade pela UNESCO –, aqui se encontram alguns dos edifícios mais antigos da cidade, que formam o inconfundível e colorido casario, um dos postais ilustrados do Porto.

Com o rio sempre presente, há aqui muitos pontos de encontro e de história. Como o Muro dos Bacalhoeiros: uma continuação da antiga Muralha Fernandina e um dos melhores lugares para obter uma vista privilegiada do conjunto das duas margens do Douro. Ou a emblemática Praça da Ribeira, também conhecida como Praça do Cubo, devido ao seu cubo de bronze rodeado de esplanadas. E, mesmo ali ao lado, a Casa do Infante, onde o Infante D. Henrique nasceu em 1394.

Bela de dia, a Ribeira é ainda mais animada depois de o sol se pôr.

Quando anoitece e as luzes da cidade se refletem no rio, os seus restaurantes e bares enchem-se de portuenses e visitantes, ansiosos por desfrutar da noite nesta que é uma das zonas mais típicas e genuínas deste Porto tradicional.

Beside it, the Casa do Infante (Infant House), where Infant D. Henrique was born, in 1394.

Beautiful during the daytime, the Ribeira is even livelier after the sun sets. When the night falls and the city lights reflect on the river, its restaurants and pubs fill with Portuenses (Oporto’s people) and visitors, eager to enjoy the evening in what is one of the most typical and genuine

Viva o São João!

Viva São João!

Se a zona da ribeirinha já é animada, torna-se ainda mais naquela que é a noite mais aguardada do ano. Na noite de São João, de 23 para 24 de junho, a Ribeira veste-se a rigor para receber milhares de foliões que celebram de martelinhos e alhos-porros em punho. Virada para o rio, a zona das Fontainhas é de passagem obrigatória, graças à sua famosa cascata que representa cenas religiosas, lugares da cidade e costumes perdidos no tempo através de detalhadas miniaturas. À meia-noite, é sobre o rio, junto à ponte D. Luís I, que acontece um deslumbrante espetáculo de fogo-de-artifício, também conhecido como fogo de São João. O arraial prolonga-se e os mais resistentes percorrem a marginal, da Ribeira até à Foz, onde terminam a noite na praia, aguardando o nascer do sol.

Although the riverside area is already very vibrant, it becomes even more so on what is the most anticipated night of the year. Com projeto de Mário Oliveira, arquiteto que coordenou a maioria das obras Marques Soares, o Espaço Jovem ganhou uma nova dinâmica que está em perfeita sintonia com a sua envolvente.

Localizado em plena Baixa – mais precisamente entre a icónica Torre dos Clérigos e a belíssima livraria Lello e Irmão –, encontra-se num dos epicentros de compras e turismo do Porto. O público cada vez mais jovem e internacional, que todos os dias percorre a Baixa, motivou uma abordagem mais atual e trendy do Espaço, sem deixar de valorizar as caraterísticas muito próprias do edifício histórico onde se insere.

With a project by Mario Oliveira, the architect who coordinated most of Marques Soares works, the Youth Section gained a new dynamic, which is in perfect harmony with its surroundings. Located in Baixa (Downtown) – more precisely, between the iconic Clérigos Tower and the beautiful Lello e Irmão bookstore – is in one of the epicentres of Oporto’s shopping and tourism. The increasingly and more international customers, that every day run through the downtown area, motivated a more current and trendy approach of the space, while enhancing the very specific features of the historic building in which it operates.

Assim, quem entra, encontra de imediato um espaço dedicado ao calçado e moda urban. Um conceito que é reforçado pela utilização do microcimento, do ferro e do preto mate que contrastam com os painéis de madeiras claras. Esta decoração foi pensada para pôr cada peça em evidência, definindo os ambientes dos restantes pisos dedicados ao Desporto (piso -1), à Moda Jovem Feminina (1.º andar), Moda Jovem Masculina (2.º andar) e ainda a um espaço cultural e de lazer (3.º andar) que será revelado em breve.

Upon entering, you find a space dedicated to urban footwear and fashion. A concept, which is reinforced by the use of micro cement, iron and matt black which contrasts with the light wood panels. This decoration was designed to bring out each piece, setting the environment of the remaining floors dedicated to Sport (level -1), Young Women’s Fashion (1st floor), Young Men’s Fashion (2nd floor) and also a cultural and leisure area (3rd floor), which will soon be revealed.

A sua forma curva e espiralada, que parece querer desenrolar-se ao longo do molhe, destaca-se na marginal de Matosinhos, sendo já um marco na paisagem da cidade. Inaugurado no verão de 2015, o novo Terminal de Cruzeiros é a face mais visível de um projeto que pretende abrir o Porto de Leixões à cidade e colocá-lo definitivamente no mapa dos maiores navios de cruzeiro do mundo.

Its arched and spiral shape, which seems to unfold along the jetty, stands out in the Matosinhos’ sea line, and it has already become a landmark in the city’s landscape. Inaugurated in the summer of 2015, the new Cruises Terminal is the most visible characteristic of a project that intends to open the Leixões Harbour to the city and put it on the map of the largest cruise ships in world.

Há quem diga que se parece com um caracol, com uma rosa ou que faz lembrar um transatlântico. Com a assinatura do arquiteto Luís Pedro Silva, esta é uma obra que salta à vista. Localizado entre o molhe sul e o cais de cruzeiros, a 800 metros da linha da costa, a sua estrutura de 18.500 metros cúbicos de betão e 40 metros de altura está assente em estacaria. Para além do betão branco, utiliza também o granito de São Gens – um material da região no qual foram construídos os molhes do porto – e o vidro. Mas o grande destaque, que também conspira para a sua graça e distinção, é o revestimento em mosaicos cerâmicos Vista Alegre, cujas formas hexagonais e disposição aleatória conferem uma textura que reflete inesperadamente a luz do sol nas suas superfícies curvas.

Marco arquitetónico já considerado incontornável, o Terminal de Cruzeiros de Leixões afirma-se, de forma simbólica e concreta, como uma das portas de entrada na região.

Some say it looks like a snail with a rose or that it resembles an ocean liner. With the signature of the architect Luis Pedro Silva, this is a work that stands out. Located between the south jetty and the cruise pier, about 800 meters from the coastline, its structure with 18,500 cubic meters of concrete and 40 meters high was built on piles. Besides the white concrete, the Oporto piers have also been built with granite from Gens (a local material) and glass. However, the main highlight, which also contributes to its refinement and distinction, is its coating with Vista Alegre ceramic tiles, whose hexagonal shapes and random arrangement confer a texture, which unexpectedly reflects the sunlight on its curved surfaces. Already considered as a mandatory architectural mark, the Leixões Cruise Terminal states itself, symbolically and materially, as one of the gateways for this region.

Mais do que um terminal

O novo Terminal de Cruzeiros é considerado o maior projeto de sempre de abertura do Porto de Leixões à cidade e sua envolvente. O icónico edifício é parte de uma estratégia que tem como objetivo não só potenciar a comunicação entre o porto e a cidade, mas também promovê-lo enquanto porto privilegiado para a escala de navios de cruzeiro.

O Porto de Leixões tem uma localização privilegiada numa zona de cruzamento das principais rotas entre os continentes americano e europeu. A apenas três quilómetros da cidade do Porto, também está próximo do Aeroporto Internacional Francisco Sá Carneiro e rodeado por uma riquíssima oferta hoteleira. No contexto de uma região que se torna, cada vez mais, uma referência para visitantes de diferentes partes do globo, a aposta no mercado de cruzeiros faz todo o sentido.

Assim, em 2004, a necessidade de adaptar o Porto de Leixões aos novos desafios motivou a elaboração de um plano estratégico que, entre outras ações, incluiu a criação de infraestruturas como o novo cais de acostagem para cruzeiros e um edifício para a estação de passageiros. Se o cais permite receber alguns dos maiores navios de cruzeiro da atual frota mundial – tem capacidade para embarcações até 320 metros de comprimento –, o novo Terminal amplia a capacidade de circulação passageiros em turnaround, ou seja, que efetuam embarque e desembarque. E, como resultado, em 2015 os 78.500 passageiros que passaram pelo porto corresponderam a um crescimento de 22%.

Mas o Terminal não é apenas um terminal. Em vez das habituais lojas e restaurantes, o edifício acolhe o Polo do Mar do Parque de Ciência e Tecnologia da Universidade do Porto, contando com a presença permanente de 250 investigadores distribuídos pelos seus vários gabinetes e laboratórios. Oferece também um espaço de exposições e um pequeno restaurante.

Marco arquitetónico, porta de entrada para a região e centro de investigação e desenvolvimento, o novo Terminal de Cruzeiro de Leixões marca encontro entre a cidade e o mundo para além do Atlântico.

More than a terminal The new Cruise Terminal is considered to be the largest project ever for the opening of the Leixões Harbour to the city and its surroundings. The iconic building is part of a strategy, which aims not only to enhance the communication between the harbour and the city, but also to promote it as a prime harbour for the stopover of cruise ships.

The Leixões Harbour has a privileged location, it is in an area where the main routes between American and European continents meet. Just three kilometres from the city of Oporto, it is also close to Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport and it is surrounded by a vast offer of hotels. In the context of a region that increasingly becomes a reference for visitors from different parts of the globe, betting on the cruise market makes sense. Therefore, in 2004, the need to adapt the Leixões Harbour to new challenges, led to the development of a strategic plan that, among other actions, included the construction of infrastructure, such as the new berths for cruise ships and a building for the passenger station. As the dock allows it to receive some of the current biggest world fleet cruise ships – having a capacity for ships up to 320 meters long – the new Terminal expands the passenger circulation capacity in turnaround, i.e. that go on board and that disembark. Thus, as a result, in 2015, 78,500 passengers have gone through the harbour, corresponding to an increase of 22%.

Nevertheless, this Terminal is not just a terminal. Instead of the usual shops and restaurants, the building houses the Polo do Mar do Parque de Ciência e Tecnologia (Sea Polo of the Science and Technology Park), of Universidade do Porto (Oporto’s University), with the permanent attendance of 250 researchers, spread across its various offices and laboratories. It also has an exhibition area and a small restaurant.

An architectural mark, gateway to the region and research and development centre, the new Leixões Cruises Terminal, brings together the city and the world beyond the Atlantic Ocean.

O AUTOR DO PROJETO DO TERMINAL DE CRUZEIROS DO PORTO DE LEIXÕES FALA-NOS SOBRE AS IDEIAS QUE ESTIVERAM NA BASE DA CONCEÇÃO DESTE EDIFÍCIO MARCANTE. THE AUTHOR OF THE LEIXÕES HARBOUR’S CRUISE TERMINAL PROJECT, TELLS US ABOUT THE IDEAS THAT FORMED THE BASIS OF THE DESIGN OF THIS REMARKABLE BUILDING.

O que representa para si a ligação à Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto?

A Faculdade de Arquitetura representa a maneira como aprendi, por um lado, a ver a arquitetura e, por outro, a ter um processo de projeto, desde a conceção, à obra e ao resultado dedicado ao usufruto das pessoas.

Para além de ter sido aluno na Faculdade de Arquitetura, fiz depois o mestrado em Planeamento e Projeto do Ambiente Urbano, e concorri para professor. Sou docente desde 2000, tendo lecionado Projeto I durante sete anos, assim como Projeto V ao longo dos últimos sete. Em março prestei as Provas Públicas de Doutoramento, o que vem fortalecer esta ligação.

Mantenho-me muito identificado com este estabelecimento de ensino, especialmente pelo modo como a Faculdade entende a arquitetura e como encara o processo de projeto.

Se pela pergunta se procura algum compromisso a uma certa linguagem arquitetónica, uma determinada formalização da arquitetura, eu entendo que, apesar de ser um estabelecimento de ensino de grandes convicções sobre a disciplina, isso não me constrangiu a um determinado resultado formal. Uma vez garantido o rigor e a obervação dessas convicções, sempre permitiu o redirecionamento para vários resultados possíveis.

What is for you the connection to the College of Architecture of the University of Oporto?

The College of Architecture represents the way that I have learned, on one hand, to see the architecture and, on the other, to have a design process, from its conception to the work and to the result dedicated to people’s usage.

In addition to being a student at the College of Architecture, I then did a Masters in Planeamento e Projeto do Ambiente Urbano (Planning and Urban Environment Project), and I applied to be a professor. I have been a professor since 2000, teaching Project 1, as well as Project 5, over the last seven years. Last March, I took my Public Doctoral Examinations, which strengthen this link.

I identify myself very much with this educational institution, especially with the way that this College understands architecture and how it faces the design process.

If by questioning, one looks for a commitment to a certain architectural language, a certain formalization of architecture, I understand that, despite being an institution of great educational convictions on this subject, which did not compel me to a certain formal result. Once the precision and observation of those convictions were secured, it has always allowed for a redirection to several possible outcomes.

Que arquitetos são para si uma referência? Porquê?

Por um lado, tendo que referir alguém em concreto, ocorre-me imediatamente o trabalho e a pessoa de Álvaro Siza Vieira, uma referência que não se desgasta para mim ao longo de 26 anos. Quando se habita um edifício da sua autoria, como é o caso da própria Faculdade de Arquitetura, estamos sempre a surpreender-nos. A qualidade e atenção que tem a tudo são aspetos que influenciam muito o que faço.

Aprende-se muito com o seu processo e vivendo as obras que faz.

Num segundo nível, entendo que, como referência para a arquitetura, é tão importante a obra dos arquitetos como o mundo das formas e do espaço em geral. Fazer arquitetura só com obra dos arquitetos provavelmente constrange muito a nossa atividade, que consiste na organização do espaço.

Which Architects are for you a reference?

On one hand, having to refer to someone in particular, the work and the person of Álvaro Siza Vieira, a reference that has not worn out for me for over 26 years, immediately comes to mind. When one inhabits a building of his authorship, as is the case of the College of Architecture itself, we are always being surprised. The quality and attention that he gives to all details are aspects that greatly influence what I do. You learn a lot with his process and living the work he performs. On the other hand, I also understand that, as a reference to architecture, that the architects work is as important as the world of shapes and space in general. Building with only architects probably constrains our activity, which is the organization of space.

The Leixões Cruise Terminal is a project with unique characteristics and a very strong presence in Matosinhos landscape. What ideas were in its roots?

This work has an origin in territorial issues and after a resolution that extends to the most basic and elementary questions of the human body in space. It is, therefore, natural that the landscape and territorial dimension are present in the buildings perception – that is not only captured in the place it stands. Nevertheless, its functional base originates from the movements of harbour functions, leisure boating functions and in the relationship with the city and the university. The roots of its shape are closely linked to the arch designed by the South Jetty where it is implanted. The materials relate to the marine environment conditions, to the coating of the harbour and Matosinhos traditions and some contrast with the centuries-old granite construction of the south jetty, which originated in the nineteenth century.

O Terminal de Cruzeiros de Leixões é um projeto com características singulares e uma presença muito marcante na paisagem de Matosinhos. Que ideias estiveram na sua base?

Este trabalho tem uma origem nas questões territoriais e depois uma resolução que se prolonga até às questões mais básicas e elementares do corpo humano no espaço. É, portanto, natural que a dimensão paisagística e territorial esteja presente na perceção do edifício ‒ que não se apreende apenas no lugar próprio da sua implementação. Já a sua base funcional tem origem nos movimentos das funções portuárias, das funções de recreio náutico e ainda nos movimentos de relação com a cidade e com a universidade. As raízes da sua forma estão muito ligadas ao arco desenhado pelo molhe sul onde se implanta. Os materiais prendem-se às condições do ambiente marítimo, à tradição de revestimento do Porto e Matosinhos e a algum contraste com a construção granítica centenária do molhe sul, que teve origem no século XIX.

O que a levou a investir numa carreira como modelo?

A entrada no mundo da moda surgiu através de um convite para um desfile, que abriu as portas a outras oportunidades na área. O que começou por ser vivido como um hobby transformou-se numa carreira internacional que, mais tarde, acabou por me conduzir à Central Models.

What led you to invest in a career in modelling?

I entered the world of fashion when I was invited to a fashion show, which opened doors to other opportunities within the industry. What started out as a hobby turned into an international career, which endedup leading me to Central Models.

Which were the most important moments of your career as a model?

Quais os momentos mais marcantes da sua carreira enquanto manequim?

Os anos em que apostei na minha carreira internacional, em que vivi e trabalhei em países como Japão, Brasil, Espanha, Alemanha e Áustria, foram maravilhosos. Senti que estava a realizar o meu sonho de conhecer o mundo e ainda por cima, na companhia do Tó [Romano].

Guardo com carinho todas as sessões fotográficas em que participei e os ensinamentos que adquiri em termos de imagem.

The years I dedicated to an international career, during which I lived and worked in countries such as Japan, Brazil, Spain, Germany and Austria, they were wonderful. I felt that I was fulfilling my dream of seeing the world, and on top of that, in the company of Tó [Romano]. I cherish all the photo shoots in which I participated and the teachings acquired in terms of image.

Central Models, the agency you founded with your husband (Tó Romano), was one of the first in Portugal. How did this project get

A Central Models, agência que fundou com o seu marido (Tó Romano), foi uma das pioneiras em Portugal. Como nasceu este projeto?

O contacto com mercados internacionais deu-me a perceção que em Portugal ainda estava tudo por acontecer. A Central Models nasceu da vontade de organizar, estruturar, formar, desenvolver, profissionalizar e internacionalizar a atividade de modelo no nosso país. Olho para trás e sinto um imenso orgulho no trabalho desenvolvido pela Central Models e na sua influência na mudança de paradigma no mercado português.

started?

My exposure to international markets gave me the perception that in Portugal, everything was still to happen. Central Models was born out of the will to organise, structure, train, develop, professionalise and internationalise the work of models in our country. My work at Central Models is based on the mediation of human relations and the needs of customers and models. The recruitment, training and social development of the models is essential in preparing them for the challenges they will face throughout their careers and we therefore invest not only in the development of the technical component, but also the on the social element. The Master’s degree in Occupational Psychology, People and Organisations was vital in consolidating and substantiating my experience at the Agency for the past 26 years.

Que características considera fundamentais num modelo?

Todos os detalhes são importantes e somos extremamente criteriosos na seleção. Além de boas proporções (altura de perna, pescoço, tamanho da cabeça), temos em consideração características físicas como estrutura do rosto, cabelo, olhos, boca, pele e silhueta. É determinante um corpo bem trabalhado, cabelo cuidado, dentes saudáveis e uma pele bonita. Psicologicamente, valorizamos a autoconfiança, boa disposição, energia positiva e empatia.

What characteristics do you consider essential a model have?

Every detail is important and we are extremely judicious when selecting. In addition to the right proportions (height leg, neck, head size), we also consider physical characteristics such as face structure, hair, eyes, mouth, skin and silhouette. A toned body, well-kept hair, healthy teeth and skin are crucial. Psychologically, we value self-confidence, good humour, positive energy and empathy.

A Sara Sampaio tem tudo o que é preciso para alcançar o sucesso: vontade de vencer, autoconfiança, conhece-se como ninguém e sabe tirar partido do seu corpo. Nunca desistiu e aprendeu a ser resiliente, o que lhe deu muita força. Soube observar, ouvir e seguir todos os passos necessários para subir uma grande escalada e chegar ao topo. Only the special ones reach the top, those that make smart choices and have extraordinary charisma.

Above all, that they view fashion as an extracurricular activity, which allows them to develop skills that are valued in any line of work, including social skills, self-esteem and emotional intelligence. In addition, I also try to make them aware of how important it is that they conduct themselves well on a daily basis and encourage them to develop habits beneficial to their health, body and diet.

A Moda Portuguesa já é uma realidade e tem uma identidade própria. Apesar da dimensão do nosso país, temos uma tradição ligada à indústria da moda (especialmente na zona norte do país), e ligada ao design, pela mão de um leque brilhante de criadores de moda.

Nos últimos tempos, nota-se que as pessoas estão mais atentas à moda, mais desinibidas, criativas e bonitas.

What is your opinion of the world of fashion in Portugal?

Portuguese fashion is already a reality and has an identity of its own.

Despite the size of our country, we have tradition in the fashion industry (especially in the north of the country), and in design, thanks to a number of brilliant fashion designers. It is noticeable that people have, in recent times, become more attentive to fashion, less inhibited, creative and beautiful.

Marques Soares is a beautiful childhood memory, a symbol of good memories and their shop windows are still alive in my memory. I remember saying that they were the Portuguese Galeries Lafayette. I am very proud of having been a model for Marques Soares in the 80s!

Oporto was the city where you were born and raised. What are the most noticeable differences between the Oporto of your childhood

O Porto foi a cidade que a viu nascer e crescer. Quais as diferenças mais visíveis do Porto da sua infância e o de hoje?

A cidade do Porto é linda! No Porto vou sentir-me sempre em casa. Adorava as características ímpares dos seus bairros e gentes, que davam a sensação de estarmos em plena aldeia urbana, agora amo a dimensão cosmopolita que tem vindo a adquirir. Gosto muito de passar fins de semana no Porto, com o Tó [Romano] e os meus dois filhos!

The city of Oporto is beautiful! I will always feel at home in Oporto. Nos diferentes espaços – da sauna ao jacuzzi, do banho turco à sala de duche Vichy, passando pela piscina interior e pelas diferentes salas de tratamento – é possível experimentar tratamentos que equilibram corpo e mente. Como a massagem de erva-cidreira e o tratamento nobre, que inclui uma exfoliação, uma hidromassagem e uma massagem relaxante. Ou para quem gosta de sentir a água a percorrer pelo corpo, o hidratante e exfoliante duche Vichy. A hortelã e a erva-cidreira perfumam o ar, misturando-se com o aroma da lavanda cujas florzinhas roxas decoram o espaço.

Reopened in 2013 with a renewed concept of modern and intimate leisure, Hotel Minho offers the exclusive tranquillity and beauty of the northern region. An invitation that includes the spa – which resulted from this refurbishment – in which the soul of Minho is reflected with the presence of honey and Vinho Verde (wine). Typical products from this region, the moisturising power of honey and the antioxidant power of grapes, starring in unique treatments, such as: the honey signature massage, the barrel bath and the massage with warm grape bags.

However, the suggestion of moments of pure well-being does not end here. In the different rooms – from the sauna to the jacuzzi, from the Turkish bath to the Vichy shower room, from the indoor pool to the different treatment rooms – one can experience treatments that balance body and mind. Just like the lemongrass massage or the noble treatment, which includes an exfoliation, a hydro-massage and a relaxing massage. For those who enjoy feeling the water running throughout the body, the moisturising and exfoliating Vichy shower. Scents of mint and lemongrass perfume the air, mingling with the scent of lavender from purple florets, which decorate the space.

After the treatment, the therapy continues in one of the relaxation rooms. In the tea room there is a fireplace, which in the winter ensures a cosy atmosphere, while drinking a delicious tea made with herbs harvested from the small herbs garden of the hotel. In the summer, the sun invites you to stay lounging around, in the surrounding courtyards. This harmony is also granted by the minimalist lines of architecture, which refer to an elegant simplicity. The wooden walls coexist with the marble.

From Oporto to Peso da Régua, we follow the route of the ex-libris of the Douro region: wine. We followed trails which escape the fleetingness of time in order to emerge in its history, through the museums that pay it homage. To go along with geography, we inverted the timeline and tell a story from back to front, one that you can feel in the aftertaste of the much-admired nectar of Douro.

Começamos na zona ribeirinha do Porto, a cidade que deu nome ao vinho embaixador de Portugal. Do Museu do Vinho do Porto esperava-se, quiçá, um relato completo desde a apanha da primeira uva à experiência sensorial com que se presenteia o palato num primeiro gole. Mas não é isso que encontra quem chega disposto a conhecer os cantos ao Museu do Vinho do Porto. Aqui, a história começa pelo fim para se falar do Vinho do Porto enquanto atividade comercial, evocando a memória das transformações levadas a cabo pela história de três Portos que ali se unem: o Porto cidade, o Porto do vinho e o porto do rio Douro.

Plantado à beira do rio que levou a fama do néctar do Douro além-fronteiras, o Museu encontra lugar no piso térreo do armazém do Cais Novo, um edifício que faz jus à arquitetura setecentista, mandado construir junto à casa com o mesmo nome por iniciativa da família duriense Pinto da Cunha Saavedra. Erguido inicialmente para depósito dos vinhos pertencentes à Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, o espaço foi depois depósito da alfândega do Porto e só mais tarde, em 2004, a riqueza do seu passado acabaria por dar lugar a um museu.

Assim que passamos a porta, o teto convexo, em tudo semelhante ao das caves que dão fama à outra margem do Douro, denunciam o protagonismo que o Vinho do Porto assume entre aquelas paredes, provado pelas barricas de carvalho que encontramos pelo caminho. De um lado, há painéis que nos fazem viajar pela história que nasceu nas rugosas vinhas que crescem nas escarpas do Douro, de outro, vestígios arqueológicos de um Porto que já foi porto comercial e que fez do Vinho do Porto, um vinho do mundo. Mais à frente, faz-se referência à barra do Douro, a tormenta do Norte que levou ao naufrágio de centenas de rabelos que transportavam o vinho.

E porque é de comercialização que fala este museu, potenciada em grande parte pela burguesia portuense, está também patente a reconstituição de ambiente de comerciante da alta burguesia, onde não faltam miniaturas de mobiliário português que ilustram a

We begin with the riverside area of Oporto, the city that named Portugal’s ambassador wine. One would expect that the Port Wine Museum, would offer an experience ranging from the harvesting of the first grape to the sensorial experience of the first sip of wine. However, that is not what is experienced by those who visit the Port Wine Museum. The story of Port wine as a business begins at the end and brings to mind memories of the transformation brought about by the three local ports, the city of Oporto, Port wine and the Douro river port.

On the bank of the river that worldwide fame to the local Douro nectar, the Museum is located on the ground floor of the Cais Novo (New Pier) warehouse, a building that lives up to architecture of the eighteenth century, built nearby the house after which the museum was named, by order of the Pinto da Cunha Saavedra family. Initially built for the deposit of wines belonging to the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro (General Company of Agriculture of the Upper Douro Vineyards), this space later became an Oporto customs deposit and only later, in 2004, did the wealth of its past eventually give way to a museum.

Upon entering, we see the convex ceiling similar to those that can be found in the cellars that line the opposite river bank showing the importance that Port Wine has among those walls, aged by the oak barrels that one can find along the way.

On one hand, there are panels that make us travel throughout the history that was born in the rough vines growing in the Douro River banks.

On the other hand, archaeological remains of an Oporto that has already been a trading port and that made of Port Wine, a wine of the world. Further ahead, there is a reference to the Douro bank, the North torment that caused the wreck of hundreds of Rabelo boats, which were transporting the wine. This museum is all about the commercialisation of port wine, helped along mostly by Oporto’s middle-class, where there are also miniatures of Portuguese furniture illustrating the decor that filled the stately manors at that time.The opening of the Douro line and the emergence of banking, essential for the city’s commercial development

A ligação entre o passado e o presente faz-se através de postos multimédia que disponibilizam informações de caráter regional de todos os municípios ribeirinhos da Região Demarcada do Douro e nos aguçam a curiosidade sobre a mais antiga região demarcada do mundo. É para lá que seguimos, dispostos a conhecer as origens.

also found a place here, immediately attracting curious glances: an exhibition dedicated to the evolution of bottles and also various objects related to the famous syrup, where two bottles of the oldest vintage on record deserve special highlights: the “Vintage Waterloo” in 1815. The connection between past and present is made via multimedia stations, which provide regional information about all the councils along the river bank on the Douro Wine Demarcated Region and whets our curiosity about the oldest demarcated region in the world. That is where we go next, wanting to know its roots.

Por entre os socalcos íngremes que bordeiam o rio Douro chegamos ao berço do vinho do Porto, o mais famoso da região consagrada Património Mundial pela UNESCO. É aqui, com vista privilegiada para as vinhas que ladeiam Peso da Régua, que encontramos o Museu do Douro, vencedor do prémio internacional Global Best of Wine Tourism 2015 – Great Wine Capitals na categoria de “Melhor Experiência em Arte e Cultura”.

A Casa da Companhia, que dá morada ao museu, é um dos mais emblemáticos edifícios da região e foi sede da Companhia Geral da Agricultura e das Vinhas do Alto Douro que, em 1756 fundou a primeira zona vinícola regulada do mundo. Numa simbiose entre a tradição e a modernidade, este é um lugar que se assume como um espaço coletivo de memória e identidade da região vinhateira e, simultaneamente, como instrumento de valorização das atividades associadas à vitivinicultura, ao turismo cultural e ao Enoturismo. A fachada principal do edifício, que conserva a sobriedade e funcionalidade típicas da arquitetura pombalina, é naturalmente voltada para o rio, a grande via do comércio do vinho. Return to origins Among the steep terraces surrounding the Douro River we arrive at the birthplace of the Port Wine, the most famous part of the regions consecrated World Heritage by UNESCO. It is here, with a privileged view over the vineyards that surround Peso da Régua, that one can find the Museu do Douro (Douro Museum), award winner of the international Global Best of Wine Tourism 2015 – Great Wine Capitals, in the category of “Best Experience in Art and Culture”.

The Company’s House, which hosts the museum, is one of the most emblematic buildings in the region and was the Companhia Geral da Agricultura e das Vinhas do Alto Douro (General Company of Agriculture and Vineyards of Alto Douro) headquarters, which in 1756 founded the first regulated wine region in the world. In a symbiosis between tradition and modernity, this is a place that is assumed as a collective space of memory and identity of the wine region, and simultaneously as a recovery tool of the activities associated with the wine industry, cultural tourism and wine tourism. The main fascia of the building, which retains the simplicity and functionality typical of Pombaline architecture is naturally directed towards the river, the great highway of the

A cerca de 30 quilómetros do Museu do Douro, a meio caminho entre Peso da Régua e Pinhão, há um segredo que merece ser desvendado e apreciado: o Miradouro de São Leonardo da Galafura. Do alto dos seus 640 metros, a paisagem do Douro deslumbra a vista, onde a natureza desperta os odores que se completam com um trago do melhor vinho do Porto, nascido e criado nestes socalcos.

Era aqui que Miguel Torga mergulhava o pensamento e se embrenhava na paisagem magnânima deste “Doiro sublimado”, a quem num dos seus “Diários” chamou de “excesso de natureza”. Inscrito num painel de azulejos, junto à singela capela ali erguida, o elogio do poeta serve de legenda a um deslumbrante quadro que é ponto de paragem obrigatória para quem visita o Douro.

About 30 kilometres from the Douro Museum, halfway between Peso da Régua and Pinhão, there is a secret that deserves to be unravelled and appreciated: The São Leonardo da Galafura viewpoint. From the top of its 640 meters, the Douro landscape dazzles the eye, where nature awakens the odours that are completed with a sip of the best Port Wine, grown on these terraces. It was here that Miguel Torga plunged his thoughts and embroiled in the magnanimous landscape of this “Doiro sublimado” (Sublimated Gold), which in one of his “Diaries” he called “a nature overload”. Inscribed on a tile panel, by the modest chapel built there, the poet’s praise is a subtitle to a stunning picture, which is a mandatory stop for those visiting the Douro.

In the heart of Lamego, The Wine House Hotel – Quinta da Pacheca enchants with its stately refinement, in perfect harmony with a very contemporary charm. Surrounded by vineyards spreading verdant down to the river, it promises moments of discovery and comfort, accompanied by noble Douro syrups.

Orgulhosamente localizada na mais antiga região demarcada do mundo, a Quinta da Pacheca é um dos mais afamados produtores de vinhos do Douro, tendo sido um dos primeiros a engarrafar com a sua própria marca. A casa típica do século XVIII pertenceu, no longínquo ano de 1738, a D. Mariana Pacheco Pereira – o que explica o nome “Pacheca” –, mas foi só em 1903 que D. José Freira de Serpa Pimentel a consagrou à vinicultura.

A partir daqui, a história desta quinta secular fez-se de preciosos néctares que levaram os mistérios do Douro a vários pontos do mundo: de França à China, do Reino Unido ao Brasil.

Proudly located in the oldest demarcated region in the world, Quinta da Pacheca is one of the most famous Douro wine producers and was one of the first to bottle with its own brand. The typical eighteenth century house belonged to, in the distant year of 1738, D. Mariana Pacheco Pereira – which explains the name “Pacheca” – but it was only in 1903 that D. José Serpa Pimentel dedicated it to winegrowing.

From here, the history of this centuries farm was made out of precious syrups, which took the mysteries of the Douro to various parts of the world, from France to China, from the UK to Brazil.

Em 2009 a Quinta da Pacheca começou a escrever mais uma página da sua história quando decidiu enveredar pelo enoturismo – nascia assim o The Wine House Hotel.

A antiga casa da propriedade foi restaurada, conservando-se a traça original com as suas características senhoriais, onde foram acrescentados rasgos de contemporaneidade. A decoração, simultaneamente rústica e moderna, ajuda a manter vivo o espírito de conforto familiar que faz o visitante sentir-se em casa. Um exemplo são os 15 aconchegantes quartos, todos decorados individualmente e alguns com varandas de onde se pode desfrutar da paisagem de vinhedos verdejantes.

Vocacionado para o turismo gastronómico e enológico, no seu restaurante podem ser degustados os pratos típicos durienses com o toque requintado e criativo do chef Carlos Pires. Já na wine shop é possível descobrir todo o portfólio de vinhos da Quinta, assim como outras iguarias aqui produzidas, nomeadamente o azeite e os doces.

Os apaixonados pelos vinhos e sabores do Douro podem ainda participar em provas explicadas, cursos de vinhos e workshops de cozinha. Podem também descobrir a região através de passeios pedestres, de barco, de comboio ou de helicóptero. Tudo para proporcionar uma experiência inesquecível, que merece ser saboreada.

Experiences to enjoy In 2009 Quinta da Pacheca began to write another page in its history, when they decided to plunge into the wine tourism – The Wine House Hotel was born.

The old house of the property was restored, maintaining its original design with its stately features, and to which were added contemporary details. The decor, both rustic and modern, helps keep alive the spirit of family comfort that makes the visitor feel at home. An example of that are the 15 cosy rooms, all individually decorated, some with balconies, from where you can enjoy the scenery of verdant vineyards.

Dedicated to the gastronomic and wine tourism, one can sample the typical Douro dishes in its restaurant, with Chef Carlos Pires’ refined and creative touch. In the wine shop you can find the entire portfolio of wines from the Quinta as well as other delicacies produced here, including olive oil and sweets.

The Douro wine and flavour lovers can also participate in tastings, wine courses and cooking workshops. One can also explore the region hiking, by boat, by train or by helicopter. All to provide an unforgettable experience, which deserves to be enjoyed.

At the wine shop one can find the entire wine portfolio from the Farm, as well as other delicacies produced here, including olive oil and jams.

RECONHECIMENTO INTERNACIONAL

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION The Wine House Hotel, at Quinta da Pacheca, has been recognised again by the prestigious Best of Wine Tourism. This international competition, held annually by the Network of Great Wine Capitals – has awarded it the prize in the category “Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences”, after winning last year in the category “Accommodation”.

A poucos quilómetros de Lamego vai encontrar a imponente Torre de Ucanha, construída no século XII, e a sua ponte romana sobre o rio Varosa. Sobranceiro a este rio, na encosta da Serra de Leomil, está o convento de São João da Tarouca: o primeiro mosteiro masculino cisterciense português, intimamente ligado à fundação da nacionalidade e à figura de D. Afonso Henriques. Não muito longe, o Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Salzedas – com o bairro medieval mesmo ao lado – tem no seu espólio trabalhos de alguns dos maiores nomes da pintura em Portugal, como Vasco Fernandes (Grão Vasco), Bento Coelho da Silveira ou Pascoal Parente.

In the city of Lamego make sure you visit the imposing castle from where you can overlook the rivers Coura, Balsemão and Varosa. Also, explore its beautiful churches, such as the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, with its scenic stairway. A few kilometres from Lamego you will find the great Ucanha Tower, built in the twelfth century, and its Roman Bridge over the river Varosa. Overlooking this river, on the slopes of Leomil Mountain, is the Convent of São João da Tarouca: the first Portuguese Cistercian male monastery, closely linked to the establishment of the nation and D. Afonso Henriques. Not far away, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas – with the medieval neighbourhood right next to it – it has in its collection works of some of the great Portuguese artists, such as Vasco Fernandes (Grão Vasco), Bento Coelho da Silveira or Pascoal Parente.

Firstly, he convinced his mother, a great cook, that his love for cooking reflected a real talent. Having overcome this challenge, he took on others, down a brilliant path where there with many experiences and lots of inspiration. Today, head Chef of the kitchen of the The Wine House Hotel restaurant, he conquers the most demanding palates harmonising the genuineness of the Douro and Trás-os-Montes flavours with Quinta da Pacheca wines.

Como percebeu que o seu caminho profissional passava pela cozinha?

O meu gosto pela cozinha manifestou-se cedo. Os meus pais tinham culturas agrícolas, criavam animais e a minha mãe sempre foi uma ‘cozinheira de mão cheia’. Quando chegavam com os produtos frescos ficava muito curioso sobre o que a minha mãe iria confecionar com aquelas matérias-primas. Isso foi-me aguçando o interesse.

How did you realise that your career was in cooking?

My love for cooking was revealed very early. My parents grew crops, raised livestock and my mother has always been a great cook. When they arrived with these fresh products I was always very curious about what my mother would cook. This sharpened my interest.

Was there a defining moment where this pleasure became more evident?

Houve algum momento marcante que tenha tornado esse gosto ainda mais evidente?

Quando tinha os meus 15 anos convenci a minha mãe a deixar-me cozinhar um jantar para uns familiares que estavam de visita. Ainda que um pouco reticente, ela aceitou – pois estávamos em família e se corresse menos bem havia sempre forma de dar a volta à situação. A verdade é que me saí muito bem, tanto na confeção como nos temperos, e toda a gente gostou. Foi um momento que me deu motivação e que, de alguma forma, ajudou a direcionar-me profissionalmente.

When I was 15, I convinced my mother to let me cook dinner for some family members, who were visiting us. Although a bit reluctant, she accepted it – because it was family and if it turned out badly, there was always a way to get around the situation. The truth is that it turned out really well, both the cooking and the seasoning, and everybody enjoyed it. It was a moment that motivated me and that, somehow, helped direct me professionally.

From the moment you realized what you wanted to do, how was your journey?

A partir do momento em que percebeu o que queria fazer, como foi o seu percurso?

Estudei em Bragança, onde frequentei primeiro um curso profissional e depois um curso específico. Após terminar a formação, aos 18 anos, tratei logo de encontrar trabalho. Fui chamado para a Casa da Calçada, em Amarante, onde encontrei o meu mentor profissional, o chef José Cordeiro. Seguiu-se o Restaurante Praia do Coral, no Minho, onde fui chef de cozinha. Mais tarde, fui chefe de partida de carnes no Hotel Aquapura Douro. Também passei pelo Restaurante Douro In, na Régua, e pelo Hotel Lamego. Estive um ano e meio na Suíça. Quando regressei ainda passei pelo Restaurante Castas & Pratos, na Régua, antes de surgir a oportunidade no The Wine House Hotel – Quinta da Pacheca, onde estou há dois anos como chef de cozinha.

I studied in Bragança, where I first attended a professional course and then a specific course. After finishing training, at the age of 18, I immediately tried to find work. I was called to the Casa da Calçada (Calçada House) in Amarante, where I met my professional mentor, Chef José Cordeiro. This was followed by the Restaurante Praia do Coral (Coral Beach Restaurant), in Minho, where I was a Chef. Later, I was a cutting meat Chef in Hotel Aquapura Douro. I have also been at the Douro In Restaurant, in Régua, and the Lamego Hotel. I was in Switzerland for a year and half. When I returned, I was in the Castas & Pratos Restaurant, in Régua, before the opportunity at The Wine House Hotel – Quinta da Pacheca arose, where I have been a Chef for two years.

How did the opportunity to head this project arise?

One usually says that “in life, personal and professional, stopping is dying”. When I heard that Quinta da Pacheca was looking for a Chef, I

Costuma-se dizer que na vida, pessoal e profissional, parar é morrer. Quando soube que a Quinta da Pacheca andava à procura de um chef de cozinha, candidatei-me. Acima de tudo, propus-me ao desafio, pois ser chef num restaurante ou num restaurante de hotel é completamente diferente de ter estas vertentes associadas ao enoturismo, ao ambiente da quinta. E o grande desafio foi, de facto, deparar-me com uma realidade nova. Passei a ter sob a minha alçada “o meu cantinho à la carte”, como apelido o nosso restaurante, e eventos de grande responsabilidade. Para além dos casamentos, recebemos grupos que vêm não só para visitar o espaço e desfrutar dos nossos néctares, mas também para conhecer a nossa gastronomia. Nem sempre é fácil gerir tudo isto, mas com gosto, dedicação, esforço e a ajuda da grande equipa que lidero torna-se mais fácil.

Com boas matérias-primas, muito frescas, cheias de sabor, puxando o mais possível pelo que é tradicional. As gastronomias duriense e transmontana são tão ricas e vastas que se torna menos difícil mostrar o que temos de melhor. Incorporo também influências da minha infância, da minha mãe e de todo o conhecimento que fui adquirindo ao longo do meu percurso.

The kitchen of The Wine House Hotel restaurant is traditional Portuguese with a contemporary approach. How do you make this bridge, maintaining the identity?

With good resources, very fresh, full of flavour, grasping the traditional elements as much as possible. The Douro and Trás-os-Montes cuisine are so rich and vast that it becomes less difficult to show the best we have. I also incorporate influences of my childhood, my mother and all the knowledge that I acquired during my course.

So would you say that your Trás-os-Montes roots influence your cooking...

É na Garrafeira do The Yeatman, perante o testemunho de 1.300 garrafas de vinho, que Beatriz Machado nos recebe, de sorriso no rosto. Conta que, quando foi convidada para integrar a equipa do the Yeatman, o CEO lhe perguntou se conhecia todos os vinhos portugueses. A questão não a atrapalhou e a resposta não se fez esperar: «para os conhecer, terei de os provar a todos». E assim fez. Provou-os e, não só se tornou na Diretora de Vinhos do the YeatmaN como na “Embaixadora dos Vinhos Portugueses”.

It is in the Wine Cellar at The Yeatman, with 1,300 bottles of wine bearing witness, that we are welcomed by Beatriz Machado and the smile on her face. She tells us that when she was invited to join the Yeatman team, the CEO asked her if she knew all the Portuguese wines. She did not allow herself to become unnerved by the question, and promptly answered: “to know them all, I shall have to try them all”. And so she did. She tried them all and not only did she become the Yeatman’s Wine Director, as she also became the “Ambassador of Portuguese wines”.

A sensibilidade para aromas e sabores esteve presente desde muito cedo na sua vida. Foi essa sensibilidade que acabou por conduzi-la ao curso de Engenharia Alimentar?

Optei pela Engenharia Alimentar porque sempre lhe atribuí um sentido muito prático: sabia que para o resto da eternidade o ser humano teria de se alimentar, recorrendo a métodos mais ou menos sofisticados, pelo que esta seria sempre uma área com uma grande viabilidade e espectro de oportunidades.

Your sensitivity to aromas and flavours was present since very early on in your life. Was it that sensitivity that led you to take a course in Food Engineering?

I chose the course because I have always thought it to be a very practical option: I knew that human beings would always have to eat, using more or less sophisticated methods, so this would always be a very viable sector, with a wide spectrum of opportunities.

At which point did you discover that your future would be within the

Na altura em tive que tomar uma decisão sobre o caminho de especialização a seguir pensei: “Eu sou portuguesa e Portugal é conhecido pelos vinhos ou pelo futebol”. Visto por esse prisma, a decisão acabou por ser facilitada. Sempre gostei muito de vinhos, acho que esta paixão está no ADN de cada um dos portugueses. Por isso, no último ano do curso candidatei-me a um estágio na Califórnia relacionado com o Vinho da Madeira, na Universidade de Davis, e a partir daí nunca mais me desliguei da área.

world of oenology?

When the time came to decide what to specialise in, I thought: “I am Portuguese and Portugal is famous for either wines or football”. Seen from that perspective, the decision was made easier. I have always loved wine and I think passion for wine is in the DNA of every Portuguese. Therefore, in my final year of the course I applied for an internship in California, which had to do with Madeira Wine, at the University of Davis, and from thereon I have always stayed within this industry.

What memories do you keep from the time you studied at the University of Davis, one of the most prestigious in California?

Que recordações guarda da época em que estudou na Universidade de Davis, uma das mais prestigiadas da Califórnia?

O processo de seleção é muito rígido e o acesso é limitado a um grupo bastante restrito o que torna o meio hipercompetitivo. Eu tinha a noção de que, se não desse o meu melhor, não conseguiria ganhar as bolsas que me financiavam as propinas, que eram elevadíssimas. Mas só tenho boas recordações dos três anos que passei na Califórnia! Ainda por cima, o ano em que entrei na Universidade de Davis coincidiu com o último ano de carreira da Professora Ann Noble, um dos nomes mais emblemáticos no que respeita a Análise Sensorial. Senti que era uma oportunidade única na minha vida. Também fui exposta a uma mentalidade diferente, na qual eu me revejo plenamente, que veicula a ideia que tudo é possível, o sucesso depende apenas de nós e que se, nos esforçarmos 120% é 120% que recebemos porque não existem limites.

The selection process is very stringent and admissions are very limited in numbers, which creates a hypercompetitive environment. I knew that if I did not give my best I would not get the grants to fund my tuition fees, which were very expensive. But I have only good memories of the three years I spent in California! And on top of that, my first year at the University of Davis coincided with the last year of Professor Ann Noble’s career, one of the most iconic names in Sensory Analysis. I felt it was a unique opportunity in my life. I was also exposed to a different mentality, with which I fully identify, which conveys the idea that anything is possible, success depends only on us and that if we give 120% it is 120% that we will receive in return, because there are no limits.

Antes de regressar a Portugal, foi professora assistente na Universidade de Davis e consultora de mercados. Como surgiu a oportunidade de ser a primeira Diretora de Vinhos de um Hotel Vínico (de 5 estrelas) em Portugal?

O convite partiu do CEO do grupo, o Sr. Adrian Bridge. É curioso porque nessa fase da minha vida estava a enveredar pela carreira científica e os meus planos profissionais não passavam por Portugal. Não dominava o serviço de vinhos da hotelaria, mas achei, desde logo, que esta seria a parte mais fácil de aprender porque toda a base teórica eu já a tinha.

Before returning to Portugal, you were an assistant professor at the University of Davis and a market consultant. How did the opportunity to become the first Wine Director at a (5-star) Wine Spa Hotel in Portugal come about?

I was invited by the group’s CEO, Mr. Adrian Bridge. It is strange because at that point in my life I was leaning more towards a scientific career and my professional plans did not include Portugal. I was not familiar with the hotel wine service, but I immediately thought that this would be the easiest part to learn, because I already had the academic background.

Do you feel that your international experience is an advantage in the

The advantage is not that I have international experience. It is that I have international experience at that university in particular, which is renowned around the world and a place where major industry experts gather. It is this experience, combined with a disruptive mentality, which makes us grow almost exponentially. I know that my image is not that of the traditional image associated with the wine industry, but my knowledge base is solid and I am always, always learning.

How do you feel when you are referred to as the Ambassador of Portuguese Wines?

Como se sente quando lhe atribuem o papel de Embaixadora de Vinhos em Portugal? É um papel que me traz uma responsabilidade acrescida, e em relação ao qual tento estar à altura, fazendo a ponte entre o vinho e o consumidor de uma forma descomplicada e acessível. Evito fazer avaliações emocionais e tento elevar o ponto forte dos vinhos portugueses (que é a sua história e tradição), posicioná-los (mostrar por que é que aquele vinho é especial) e, numa primeira abordagem, descrever as características sensoriais de cada vinho ao invés de referir as castas ou regiões. Mas a realidade, é que ser “Embaixadora de Vinhos em Portugal” é um papel quase consequente na medida que sou o rosto visível do sector de vinhos do The Yeatman, que é a verdadeira Embaixada dos Vinhos Portugueses.

It is a role that adds to my level of responsibility, and one to which I try to live up to, acting as a bridge between the wine and the consumer, in a simple and accessible manner. I avoid making emotional assessments and I try to bring the strength of Portuguese wines to the forefront (which is in their history and tradition), position them (show why a certain wine is special) and to begin with, describe the sensory characteristics of each wine, as opposed to referring to grape varieties or regions. But in reality, as the public-facing member of the Yeatman wine unit the role of “Ambassador of Portuguese Wines” is an almost consequential one, as Yeatman is really the Embassy of Portuguese Wines.

Para começar, o vinho tem de pertencer a um Wine Partner, o que significa que esse produtor terá de ter um quarto no The Yeatman associado à sua marca. Depois, o produtor envia-nos algumas referências que serão avaliadas em provas cegas, onde identificamos o perfil sensorial de cada vinho. Por fim, dentro do portefólio de cada produtor, selecionamos um vinho que consigamos associar facilmente à marca e que acrescente algo novo à nossa carta. Se estes parâmetros não forem cumpridos, o vinho não entra no Wine Book do The Yeatman porque não conseguimos justificar a sua presença perante o cliente.

You are responsible for a cellar with 1,300 wines, all tasted and selected by you. What is the selection process a wine is put through before reaching The Yeatman cellar?

To begin with, the wine must be from a Wine Partner, which means that the producer must have a room at The Yeatman, associated with his brand. The producer then selects and sends us the wines, which will be assessed in blind tastings, where we identify the sensory profile of each of them. Finally, within the portfolio of each producer, we select a wine that we can easily associate with the brand and it is added to our wine book. If these criteria are not met, the wine is not listed in The Yeatman Wine Book, as its inclusion cannot be justified to the customer.

Estas distinções não valorizam somente o Wine Book mas sim, todo o conceito de vinhos desenvolvido pelo The Yeatman. Trata-se de uma carta muito extensa, onde estão representadas as 1.300 referências que integram a nossa garrafeira. Para facilitar a escolha por parte do cliente criámos, a partir do Wine Book, o Wine Journal – uma versão mais resumida, onde os vinhos são criteriosamente selecionados de acordo com a estação do ano e estão organizados por preço e personalidade (frutado, famoso, edição limitada, etc.). Funciona como um concierge de vinhos em formato jornal. Há aqui, tal como em todo o conceito do hotel, uma grande vontade de descomplicar. E sentimos que essa abordagem é bem-recebida e fideliza o cliente.

Wine Spectator. Which aspects do you believe have contributed to these awards?

In addition to the recognition these awards bring to our Wine Book, they also acknowledge the entire concept of wines developed by The Yeatman. It is an extensive list, which reference the 1,300 wines in our cellar.

To assist the customer in selecting a wine, we have created, from the Wine Book, the Wine Journal – a shorter version, in which the wines are carefully selected according to the season and are organized by price and personality (fruity, famous, limited edition, etc.). It serves as a wine concierge in newspaper format. Here, as throughout the whole hotel concept, there is a great desire to be uncomplicated. We feel that this approach is welcomed and promotes customer loyalty.

Quisemos fazer do The Yeatman a Embaixada dos Vinhos Portugueses, onde estão representados os maiores produtores nacionais. E faz todo o sentido que assim seja porque, se estamos em Portugal, devemos divulgar e valorizar o que é nosso. Temos produtos de excelente qualidade, mas, às vezes, falta-nos esse sentimento “bairrista”…

In the genesis of The Yeatman Hotel is the Fladgate Partnership, with its age old tradition in the Port Wine industry. Interestingly, 97% of the wines that make up the Wine Book are Portuguese. What is strategy is behind this focus on Portuguese wines?

We wanted The Yeatman to become the Embassy of Portuguese Wines, where the biggest domestic producers would be represented. It makes sense that it be so, as we are in Portugal and should promote and value what is ours. We have excellent quality products, but we sometimes lack that feeling of “local pride”...

How do the awards The Yeatman has received add value to Portuguese wines in international markets?

De que forma as distinções que o The Yeatman tem recebido valorizam o vinho português nos mercados internacionais?

Há, de facto, uma valorização dos vinhos portugueses no mercado, especialmente com a presença de vinhos portugueses em revistas prestigiadas como a Wine Spectactor, como tem acontecido nos últimos tempos. Dá a sensação que os vinhos portugueses, tal como o Porto estão agora a ser descobertos. Os prémios incentivam os clientes a visitar-nos, a conhecer-nos e consequentemente, a falar sobre nós e sobre os nossos vinhos lá fora.

Portuguese wines have in fact gained in terms of international recognition, especially being presence in prestigious magazines such as Wine Spectator, as has been happening in recent times. One gets the feeling that Portuguese wines, as well as Oporto, are beginning to be discovered. The awards encourage customers to visit us, to get to know us and as a result, to talk about us and about our wines abroad.

You lived abroad for several years. When you returned, which were the most noticeable differences that you saw in the city of Oporto?

The downtown of Oporto underwent an amazing transformation. There

De repente, o Porto está menos provinciano e mais cosmopolita. Os hábitos e os interesses das pessoas também estão diferentes: hoje vêem-se mais pessoas a fazer desporto ou a beber um copo de vinho no fim da tarde. Lembro-me, que uma vez, depois de regressar dos EUA, fui correr com o meu cão, o Tinto-Cão [nome de uma casta do Douro],

are new bars, new cafes, new spaces, new concepts, new developments that seem to mushroom every day. Suddenly, Oporto is less local and more cosmopolitan. People’s habits and interests are also different: nowadays one sees more people doing sport or sipping a glass of wine in the late afternoon. I remember that once, having returned from the US, I was running with my dog, called Tinto-Cão (Red-Dog) [name of a Douro grape variety], and everyone stopped to look at us as if we were strange. Today it is very common, which means that the mentality itself is also changing.

The downtown area of the city, where the Marques Soares department store is located, was one of the areas that have developed the most in recent years. What memories do you have of this city?

A baixa da cidade, onde se localizam os Armazéns Marques Soares, foi uma das zonas que ganhou mais fôlego nos últimos anos. Que memórias reserva desta zona da cidade?

Tenho muito boas memórias desta zona da cidade, especialmente da minha infância. Na altura, a referência em termos de armazém pronto-a-vestir era a Marques Soares e o melhor sitio para comer era o Casão Militar, onde me lembro de comprar bolachas aos quadradinhos. Quando assistimos ao boom dos shoppings e a todo o decair do setor têxtil no Norte, a baixa do Porto foi deixada ao abandono, mas a Marques Soares teve a capacidade de resistir, reinventar-se e adaptar-se aos novos tempos. São a nossa versão portuguesa dos Armazéns Harrods onde há uma grande diversidade de marcas. A secção de Perfumaria é espetacular tal como as secções MaxMara, Sportmax Code e Marella.

I have very fond memories of this area of the city, especially from my childhood. At the time, the main reference in terms of ready-to-wear stores was Marques Soares, and the best place to eat was Casão Militar, where I remember buying chess-shaped biscuits.

When we see the boom in Shopping Centres and the decline of the textile industry in the North of the country, Oporto’s downtown was left abandoned, but Marques Soares had the ability to resist, reinventing and adapting itself to modern times. It is the Portuguese version of Harrods, where there is a wide range of brands. The Perfume department is remarkable, as are the MaxMara, Sportmax Code and Marella departments.

Há uma certa genuinidade que ainda não se perdeu. Para mim, conhecer o Porto na sua essência é andar pelas ruas e prestar atenção a todos os detalhes. Por isso, quando vêm amigos de fora, levo-os a passear pelas ruas, mostro-lhe aquelas lojas típicas onde se misturam aromas e sabores (que já só há no Porto) e deixo-os de “boca aberta” perante os azulejos das nossas casas, únicos no mundo.

Aqui os saberes tradicionais unem-se às novas tecnologias, num processo que aproveita a gravidade natural e dispensa o uso de bombas para assim preservar as propriedades dos preciosos néctares.

Para além da sua oferta de vinhos, quem vem à descoberta da Quinta encontra diversas atividades e experiências, desde visitas guiadas a provas de vinhos acompanhadas de deliciosos produtos regionais, podendo também participar na tradicional pisa da uva em lagares de granito. E se o Douro convidar a ficar mais um pouco, a Quinta conta com uma unidade de alojamento de charme, envolvida por uma paisagem apaixonante, onde é possível continuar a viagem pelos sabores e vinhos durienses.

This story began when a Frenchman, Roger Zannier, fell in love with the unique character of the Alto Douro Wine Region. From this passion, Quinta do Pessegueiro, situated in Ervedosa do Douro, São João da Pesqueira, was born.

Alchemy happens in the Cellar, a five level building whose architecture impresses with its fusion of concrete and glass. Here, traditional knowledge come together with new technologies, in a procedure that takes advantage of natural gravity and eliminates the need for pumps to preserve the properties of the precious syrups.

Apart from its wine offer, those who come to explore the Farm discover various activities and experiences, from guided tours to wine tasting accompanied by delicious regional products, one can also participate in the traditional treading of the grapes in granite vat – Lagar. If Douro invites you to stay a little longer, the Farm has a boutique accommodation unit, surrounded by a fascinating landscape, where you can continue the journey through the Douro flavours and wines.

An art deeply rooted in the Lusitanian soul, filigree came to us by the hands of pre-Roman people – with the oldest pieces dating back to 2,500 AC. Vivi em Coimbra até aos 14 anos mas a vitória no concurso internacional “Supermodel of The World” acabou por me abrir as portas para o mundo.

Durante oito anos fui cidadã do mundo e saltei de país em país até ao dia em que, por “culpa” do amor, o Porto entrou na minha vida. Caseime com um portuense [o piloto de automóveis Tiago Monteiro] mas, quando anos depois decidimos ir viver para o Porto, senti que não foi uma mudança fácil. Para trás deixava grandes cidades em troca de uma que me parecia tão pequena. Mas com o tempo, aprendi a gostar do Porto.

Deixei-me encantar pelas suas características ímpares, pela sua história e gastronomia e comecei a sentir-me em casa. Aqui, a vida é mais calma, há ótimas escolas, as pessoas são encantadoras e estou perto da Botton e Eugénio Campos, marcas com quem trabalho atualmente. Depois, há a arquitetura secular e a beleza das pontes que fazem do Porto um fantástico postal. Sinto-me cada vez mais identificada com a cidade e a verdade é que, quem vem uma vez ao Porto, jamais esquece.

I lived in Coimbra until I was 14, but winning the international “Supermodel of the World” competition opened the doors of the world to me. For eight years I was a citizen of the world, jumping from one country to another, until the day when, love was to “blame” for having brought Oporto into my life. I married a Portuense (native of Oporto) [the racing driver Tiago Monteiro], but years later, when we decided to move to Oporto, I felt it wasn’t an easy change. Behind, I left bigger cities for one that seemed so small to me. But with time, I learnt to love Oporto. I allowed myself to become enchanted by its unique characteristics, by its history and its gastronomy, and I began to feel at home. Here, life is calmer, there are great schools, people are charming and I am close to Botton and Eugénio Campos, brands I currently work with. Then there is the secular architecture and the beauty of the bridges that make Oporto a fantastic postcard. I feel increasingly identified with the city, and the truth is that those who visit Oporto never forget it.
