Compartment S4 has shown why our country needs to encourage the younger generations. Right from idea level to execution, they have done a wonderful job. The conceptual idea of BASA as well as the name was suggested by them. The beautifully crafted building was well planned and innovative along with the interactive installations which are very eye catching. Being a native of this place, I’m very proud to see such an initiative come up which has made Khirsu so famous. It not only shows the culture of the place but also uses the local materials and expressions in its construction. Compartment S4 has done a terrific job in documenting the village, knowing the people and coming up with an idea suited best to the growth of the village.

TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE OF MUKTESHWAR

PROJECT BRIEF Bhateliya, marks the entry to Mukteshwar. Hence making it an important junction and signifying the start of the beautiful place that Mukteshwar is. With this context the current market junction, Bhateliya bend becomes a very critical spot for tourists. Hundreds of tourists passby the market. But the built form of the market is in bad condition. There is no homogeneity, proper directions, places to pause, or walking path, it is untidy and haphazard. The project tries to restore and upgrade the built architecture of the market with traditional building elements. It will try to homogenize the design across the street stretch. It also looks at providing a vishramgriha and signages to direct people.

Purpose of Intervention

Revive the Dying handicrafts

The art and craft of Uttarakhand, have a definitive connection to the divine either directly in the form of images or words or indirectly in the form of sacred geometry. Traditional Handicraft or Handloom can become one of the biggest sources of income for the villages of Uttarakhand. The skills are passed on from one generation to another in families or communities of artisans. That makes it imperative to ensure that these skills sustain and thrive in the future too. This can not only generate local economy but also motivate the youth to take up these crafts as mainstream profession and hence stop migration to the cities for jobs. Local people. Local skills. Locally sourced materials
