SANITATION INITIATIVE IN THE RURAL AND URBAN PARTS OF INDIA
PINK TOILET Pauri, Nainital Designing and Execution of a Public toilet with an aim to signify the importance of toilet, hygiene and sanitation in the rural.
Pink Toilet
The Pink Toilet project is an undertaking to develop a prototype that pays special attention to women's needs. It is developed to incorporate a vending machine for sanitary napkins, an incinerator and feeding room. The design intervention makes use of locally available materials and manual labour such that it is cost effective and encourages community efforts. Through the design, goal was also to signify the importance of toilet, hygiene and sanitation in the rural.
Project Type: Sanitation. Location: Pauri, Uttarakhand. Stakeholders: •Pauri collectorate •Mr.Dhiraj singh Garbyal [District Magistrate, Pauri, Uttarakhand] •Mrs. Deepti Singh [CDO, Pauri, Uttarakhand] •SWAJAL, Pauri •Gram panchayats across Pauri district Role: Project strategizing and planning, program development, design and execution of building, optional layout design, skill development training, construction manual for further repetitions across other gram panchayats

The pink toilet designed and executed by Compartment S4 is not only just a simple toilet but an aesthetically and architecturally pleasing space. The appearance of the toilet has changed people’s perception of a toilet being an inferior space. It is well lit and naturally ventilated. This model will be replicated in multiple other villages across Pauri.
The first realisation of Pink Toilet in the Falswadi village of Uttarakhand. The site at Falswadi, is located in between two existing structures - anganwadi and panchayat ghar. The building walls are designed to be executed using the rat trap brick bond technique to provide thermal insulation and also save on the number of bricks and cement used. A band of wooden louvers, resting on the walls, goes around on all sides to allow continuous ventilation. A light, hipped sheet roof is supported on steel columns since its profile offers more resistance to strong winds in the region. The use of mud mixed with cement plaster is used for the outer walls, executed by women of the village. The design also imitates some details seen in Falswadi such as stone projections, niches and arched openings. The pink toilet construction manual is a compilation of executed toilet at Falswadi, Kot block, Pauri garhwal. The aim of the manual is to have a document which can be followed to make repetitions across villages in Pauri garhwal and Uttarakhand. The pink toilet construction manual is a compilation of executed toilet at Falswadi, Kot block, Pauri garhwal. The aim of the manual is to have a document which can be followed to make repititions across many villages in Pauri garhwal and Uttarakhand. This document is passed onto the Gram Panchayats where the funds for development of a toilet are sanctioned. The Gram Panchayats can thereafter, follow the manual to execute the design using local labour and materials. The manual consists of all the technical drawings with alternate plan layouts and the Gram panchayat can choose the layout depending on the feasibility. Detailed drawings to guide the masons with rat trap bond, twisted column, wooden louver windows and the roof are given in the manual. Also material alternatives are provided if they cannot avail wood easily. A detailed list of materials and BOQ has been given so that the gram panchayats can manage their funds accordingly. A sequence of construction has been given supported with a series of photographs to guide the masons in their construction process incase they are unable to read the drawings. COMMUNITY SANITARY COMPLEX Rural Villages of Gujarat Designing and Execution of a Public toilet with an aim to create a design manual which can be followed to make repetitions across the rural villages of Gujarat
Community Sanitary Complex Project Type: Sanitation. Location: Rural Gujarat Stakeholders: •WASH, Unicef •Commissionerate of Rural Development (CRD), Gujarat •Various Gram Panchayats across Gujarat Role: Design, Alternative layouts, Manual
The project was to prepare a prototype design and a manual for Community Sanitary Complexes(CSCs) to be built across Rural Gujarat. A public toilet need not be the dirty place that everyone imagines it to be, even a toilet can be attractive. Most importantly we believe that a clean and attractive space will change people’s perception towards toilets. Through the design, goal is to signify the importance of toilet, hygiene and sanitation in the rural. The design follows rat trap bond brick construction with a hip roof. Options for a flat roof and variable layouts as per the requirement and site area are also given. A hip roof is ideal in earthquake and high wind regions like Sabarkantha, Kutch etc. The design takes care of the privacy and security of women. Public toilets ought to be low maintenance for a prolonged use and our design details and simplicity ensure just that. The design incorporates various functional, cost-effective, aesthetic and disabled-friendly features. A few other sustainable features like rain water harvesting, solar panel roofs and reed bed filter system are also suggested in the manual.

PUBLIC TOILET + COMMERCIAL OUTLET Mukteshwar, Nainital Creating a holistic public toilet module of Sanitation , maintenance and Revenue generation in the form of a codependent Public toilet and a cafe.
Mixed-use toilet
The site is located at the Bhateliya bend,Mukteshwar, which is an important transit spot on one of the most active tourist routes in Kumaon. An existing public toilet on site is in a very bad condition and is unhygienic.
Project Type: Sanitation / Commercial
Our proposed design elegantly sits on the site attracting the tourists and visitors passing by. It is a mix of traditional architecture and the elegance of the British colonial structures. One of it’s kind module which has an integrated function of a public toilet and a commercial space so that both work in co-existence. Commercial space will be incentivised to maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the public toilet. Women friendly features like feeding room, incinerator and vending machines are also provided. The building will have sufficient natural light and ventilation so that mechanical features like exhausts can be avoided.
Location: Mukteshwar, Nainital Stakeholders: •Mr.Dhiraj singh Garbyal [District Magistrate, Nainital, Uttarakhand] •Mr.Narendra Bhandari [CDO, Nainital, Uttarakhand] •Mr.Arvind Gaur [DTDO, Nainital, Uttarakhand] Role: Design, Alternative layouts, Manual, Site supervision
The structure is made of stone walls, wooden trusses, wooden floor boards and tin roof. The material palette in the design is flexible and can be replaced as per availability and budget. Stone walls can be replaced by brick, wooden trusses can be replaced by MS trusses, wooden floor boards can be replaced by Cement boards or Gypsum sheers; hence making it considerably economical. The design consists of very simple details so that it can be repeated across the district. The building won’t only be aesthetically appealing but an integrated module like this can solve the maintenance issues of public toilets across India permanently

KAALI PEELI TOILETS Public toilets of Bhiwandi Design solutions for retrofitting 6 public toilets scattered around the city of Bhiwandi.
Kaali Peeli toilets Project Type: Sanitation. Location: Bhiwandi, Mumbai Stakeholders: •Mr.Rais Shaikh, MLA, Maharastra •Slum dwellers Role: Scattered Design interventions (Proposal), Alternative layouts, Manual
The intent of the design is to make well ventilated toilets for the slum, so that they do not accumulate garbage and smell. Also use maintenance free and easy to clean materials like perforated sheets and tiles. At the same time, developing an identity and signage for these toilets so that they can be easily identified in a slum settlement. Some soft features have also been added like a seat in front of the door, making sure it is not very comfortable, to discourage sitting for long hours. A shaded alley for queues is also provided taking care of the need for a space to queue up in a slum toilet. Six sites for intervention are identified across Bhiwandi and proposals are being made as per the size of land parcel and requirement.

ORGANIC TOILET Public Park in Pune Designing of a public toilet module in a public park development project. Integrating the design language and materiality of the elements designed in the public park into the toilet design.
वक्र वन Project Type: Public park
The project title, 'वक्र वन', loosely translates to Circles in a Forest in English. Appropriately, the project is conceptualised with the intent of encircling different pockets of activities in an urban forest. All structures behave as sculptural forms, evoking an unforgettable experience for visitors, encouraging them to keep visiting the park as a ‘natural bamboo spectacle’.
Location: Pune Stakeholders: •Residents of Pune •MBDB, Maharashtra Role: Design,Program conceptualisation, Site supervision
The park which is in the heart of the urban fabric of Pune city, provides an essential open space in the city, a natural respite for the everyday gatherings as well as large celebrations. Consequently, key functions and flexible spaces have been proposed to respond to the diverse age groups and needs. The programme includes a toilet, pavilion, amphitheatre, children’s play area, elderly seating space at the entrance, a souvenir shop selling bamboo products, open gym and seating spaces. A winding path runs along the stream and crosses over to the other side providing serene views. It meanders and creates smaller pockets for seating in between the trees, creating visual connections to the more active spots like amphitheatre, play area and gym. Such kind of flexibility in movement also resonates with the way bamboo is used to juxtapose materiality with spatiality. Each structure explores different articulations and expressions of bamboo as a viable building material. One of the important buildings designed in the park was, Sculptural Toilet: Organic curved form with a butterfly like roof in contrast to conventional box type public toilets. Skylights are incorporated in the roof to ensure ample light
